You may know the English letters A, B and C. But do you know there are people called ABCs? Do you know there is such a thing as “a banana person”? How strange! An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside and white inside. So, when a person is a banana, he or she is white inside-thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside-looking like a Chinese.
Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas(海外的)Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民)of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chinese blood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.
But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.
“ABCs” in this passage means .
A.three English letters |
B.a kind of banana |
C.Chinese born in America |
D.Americans born in China |
The underlined word “blood” may probably mean .
This passage mainly talks about ________.
A. different kind of bananas
B. the life story of C.N.Yang
C. the Noble Prize
D. overseas Chinese

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. There was no rain for almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows stopped giving milk. On this day, I witnessed (目睹) a wonder.
I was making lunch when I saw my 6-year-old son, Billy, walking very slowly towards the woods. Minutes later he came running out again, towards the house. Soon after, I saw him walking towards the woods again. This went on for an hour. Finally I walked out of the house quietly and followed him.
Billy cupped (笼成杯形) both hands in front of him as he walked, careful not to drop the water he carried. Then I saw an amazing sight. Several large deer stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them. I saw a baby deer lying on the ground. It was dying of thirst, and it tried to lift its head to drink the water in my boy’s hands.
When the water was gone, Billy ran back to the house. I followed him to the kitchen. Billy opened the tap and a small trickle (涓涓细流) came out. He let the drips (水滴) slowly fill up his “cup”.
Now I understood what was going on. The week before, he tried giving water to our horses but I told him not to waste water. Now when he stood up and turned, I was there in front of him. His eyes filled with tears (眼泪). “I’m not wasting,” he said. I joined him with a small cup of water from the kitchen. I let him walk to the baby deer alone while I stood by the woods. Tears rolled down my face. Suddenly there were some drops falling, as if the sky itself was crying.
The boy carried the water to the baby deer ________ .
A.with a small pot |
B.by cupping his both hands |
C.with the help of the large deer |
D.by using an empty bottle |
Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Cows stopped giving milk because they were old. |
B.The family was short of water at that time. |
C.The baby deer was dying because of not having enough water. |
D.The writer and the son gave water to the baby deer together. |
The last sentence in the last paragraph means ______.
A.the writer was sorry for her son and began to cry |
B.the son cried because his mother told him not to waste water |
C.the son felt sad and tired |
D.the dry season ended and it started to rain |
What’s the best title for the passage?
A.The wonder of water |
B.The wasted water |
C.The crying mother and son |
D.The dying deer |

When we talk about how teenagers are getting worse and worse now, most young people don’t agree. Teenagers always say they are growing up. They can have part-time jobs. They can drive cars. And they can even get married when they’re a little bit older.
Their parents say, “Our children are very good. They like pop music, but they play it in their own rooms. They help with the housework at home. You know they feel bored sometimes because there’s nothing interesting in the neighborhood, no clubs and no sports. They have nothing to do.
A teacher says that he believes most young people are very kind. He thinks that it’s not bad for young people to like loud music because it can give them lots of energy and make them feel excited .Also, a lot of young people work very hard at school, and they can get good jobs later.
Lewis, a sixteen-year-old boy said, “I have passed all my examinations, but I can’t get a part-time job because older people always think I’m lazy.”
In my opinion(观点), a lot of teenagers are very kind. They belong to community work groups. They help old people, and they also volunteer in local hospitals or primary schools to help look after the sick people and younger students.
