College visits are important. Before you commit years of your life and money to a school, be sure you're choosing a place that goes with your personality and interests. You can’t get the "feel' of a school from any guidebook, so be sure to visit the campus.Below are a few tips for getting the most out of your college visit.
1. Explore on Your own
Of course you should take the official campus tour, but be sure to allow time to hang around on your own. The trained tour guides will show you a school's selling points. But the o1dest and prettiest buildings don't give you the entire picture of a college.Try to walk the extra mile and get to know the campus completely.
2. Read the Bulletin Boards
When you visit the student center, academic buildings and residence halls, take a few minutes to read the bulletin boards. They provide an easy way to see what's happening on campus. The ads for lectures, clubs and plays can tell you what's going on outside the classrooms.
3. Eat in the Dining Hall
You can get a good feel for student life by eating in the dining hall.Try to sit with students if you can.Do the students seem happy or stressed? Also, is the food good? Are there adequate healthy options? Many admission offices will give prospective students coupons(优惠券)for free meals in the dining halls.
4. Visit a Class in Your Major
If you know what you want to study, a class visit makes a lot of sense. You'll get to observe other students in your field and see how involved they are in classroom discussion.Try to stay after class for a few minutes and chat with the students to get their impressions of their professors and major.Be sure to call in advance to schedule a classroom visit—most colleges don't allow visitors to drop in on class unannounced.
5. Talk to Lots of Students
Your campus tour guide has been trained to market the school. Try to talk to students who aren't getting paid to impress you. These important conversations can often provide you with information about co1lege life that isn't part of the admission script.Few university officials will tell you if their students spend all weekend drinking of studying, but a group of random students might.

Disability aids are vital to those who suffer problems with executing work with two hands. These are people who have been disabled due to some major sickness or some other problems. In order to help them carry on their work in the normal way, disability aids are manufactured. This helps them make their life a lot easier than what it would have been without these aids. The kind of disability aids that an individual might require depends on the person only. It is the problem that a person faces that decides the aids that he/she will use for carrying out their respective jobs. The following is the list of a few disability aids that come of significant use.
The first and foremost aid is the stocking aid, aiding the individuals suffering from the problem of bending down to reach the foot and wear their own socks. These stocking aids have a gutter(槽) that is made up of plastic material. These gutters are shaped in a certain way along with the attachment of cotton tapes in it. The sock is then put over the gutter. The foot is placed inside the gutter. The cotton tapes help in pulling the socks up the leg and subsequently the sock. In this manner, the sock is worn by a person who has problems wearing it by bending one’s back and reaching the foot.
There are openers that help the people who have problems with their hands or wrists to open bottles of ketchup, jam and other such bottles and jars that necessitates the use of hands and fingers.
The third type of disability aids that comes to our minds are lifts. Now what are lifts? Lifts are certain machines that help in lifting people from specific areas, such as a bathtub or a set of stairs. These lifts are of varied types and come for numerous applications. It is for the individual to decide the type that he/she requires to use.
For people, who have problems in balancing their upper bodies in a stable manner, there is something known as grab rails. These grab rails are installed for those who have mobility problems in their upper bodies. These rails come in varieties of shapes, sizes and angles. These grab rails are available to home users as well, in their different variations. One can purchase and fix one to their homes according to one’s specificities. These grab rails require the act of screwing and drilling in order to fix them to their appropriate place. The prices of these rails also vary according to the variation of their shapes and sizes.
A portable book holder is a much sought-after disability aid. It can be used by anybody for that matter, not just the disabled. These portable book holders are light-weight and can be easily moved about. These holders relieve the strains on one’s hands, necks and shoulders that might occur due to the handling of a book. The holders are provided with extended legs that help in placing the reading material at suitable distance.
Thus with the help of these disability aids, the old and disabled people can make their lives much more convenient and comfortable that would otherwise have been a cumbersome and complex one.

I used to be the messiest person alive. Over the years, through watching others and by trial and error, I have finally found ways to come up with plans, organize them and follow through with them.
Make an outline of everything you need to have and do to make your plan happen. Make a list of all of the steps that need to be accomplished and think about what needs to be done.
Detail everything thoroughly and read over it so you can start coming up with some mental solutions of how to carry out your plans.
You should ensure that if for some reason way one doesn’t work, you have way two and way three to lean back on. Therefore, different ways are needed at hand. It’s just a matter of being organized. Chances are that there is always more than one way of doing things, and chances are that if one of those ways doesn’t work, one of the other ones will.
Committing yourself to finishing at least part if not all of your plan at once is also necessary. It will show that you not only have initiative to get things rolling, but that you are interested in the results obtained with making the move to get everything done.
If you make a commitment to finish before a specific time, make sure that you carry that out, and be sure to do everything in the way you said you would, within the time-frame you set for yourself.
Don’t try to tackle more things all at a time. All that does is delay your progress, distract you and make you lose your interest, motivation and energy.
Carrying out an effective plan requires being as organized as possible. You will only achieve this by sticking to the order of the plan and not deviating or trying to do more at a time.
Last but not the least, you should never abandon things mid-project. It will only annoy everyone around you including yourself. Unfinished plans are a waste of time, energy and, in some cases, even money.
So, don’t be afraid of organization. The older we get, the more necessary it becomes to have the skills to follow through with confidence and to be able to carry through plans in an organized and manageable way. It pays to be organized, after all.

How to Prevent from Altitude Sickness
Being a paradise to many tourists, Tibet has been the dreaming wonderland and attracted tourists all over the world. And now as tourism in Tibet enters the peak season, more and more visitors are longing to travel to the mysterious highland. Meanwhile, they are worried about the altitude sickness (高原反应) which is most likely to experience in Tibet. Experts advised that tourists to Tibet should have a scientific and better understanding of the disease.
Altitude sickness, also known as acute high altitude disease (AHAD), is a common physiological reaction caused by acute exposure to low oxygen content and air pressure and dry weather when people getting up to a place with a certain altitude.
Acute altitude reaction usually occurs within hours or days after a person goes up to a highland above 2, 700 meters above sea level from a region with a lower altitude. It is believed that most visitors to Tibet will be certain to suffer from at least some symptoms which will generally disappear through acclimatization in several hours to several days. It presents as a collection of nonspecific symptoms including headache, shortness of breath, oppressed feeling in the chest, lack of appetite, fever, dizziness, fatigue or weakness, etc. Some will even take the chance to come down with drowsiness, insomnia, adrenaline surge, nosebleed and so on.
However, experts point out that human bodies can adapt to the surroundings (适应环境) in a gradual way. Therefore, altitude sickness is not that scary.
To prevent the occurrence of altitude sickness, visitors should have a proper preparation in advance and avoid heavy physical activities before they go to Tibet. After getting off the plane, they should try not to carry heavy things, run or avoid outdoor activities as much as possible.
Nifedipinum, Nuodikang Capsule and Suoluomabao Capsule (胶囊), which is also known as Hongjingtian Capsule, may help some people prevent the occurrence of altitude sickness when they are taken three days before people arrive in a highland.
Visitors with a severe cold, a high fever, acute or chronic pulmonary diseases, severe cardiovascular diseases, women in late pregnant and kids under three years old should avoid traveling to regions with a high altitude.
Proper rest, considerate preparation, and enough oxygen uptake can all help to relieve altitude sickness. If a patient does not show any sign of improvements after three to four hours, he/ she should go to a hospital for medical treatment.

I’m Evan Ducker. I’m just like every other 15-year-old teenager, except that I was born with a red birthmark .Doctors don’t know the exact cause of birthmarks like mine---but they do know it occurs in about 3 of every 1,000 children all over the world.
Some birthmarks are marks of serious medical conditions. I’m very fortune--mine isn’t. I pretty much live a regular life, except for people asking me about it all the time, which can get me annoyed sometimes. But, overall, my birthmark is just a spot on my skin. It’s not harmful to other people.
When I was about 4 years old, I asked my mom why there weren’t any characters with birthmarks in the books she would read for me. When we went to the library, we realized there weren’t any for little kids. My mom knew I was disappointed. There weren’t any books with cool characters who had birthmarks.
So she said we could write our own. She took all my ideas and we created the first book of its kind to educate kids about birthmarks and also offer a more realistic, positive character with a birthmark. I based the story on all real things that happened in my life. But instead of people, the characters in the book are real animals from the Galapagos Islands, including a red-footed bird. When people ask why I picked a red-footed bird as the main character, I tell them that the bird has red feet, similar to a human birthmark! He is pretty cool.
It was really tough to get my book published. It took a long time because a lot of publishers refused it. They would tell my family there wasn’t a market big enough for a book about birthmarks. But we knew the book wasn’t about birthmarks. It was about tolerance for people’s differences in general. We just picked a character with a birthmark because that was what I knew.

Leadership Training on the Importance of Cooperation
As we all know in order for a team to be successful they need to be able to effectively work together. Without cooperation within the team all of us members won’t be able to function at their fullest potential. And as a leader it would be your job to achieve cooperation within the whole team for only through this will you be able to achieve your goal with your team. This article will be helping you discover ways to bring out cooperation from the whole team. This would be teaching you on how to work with people through partnership which is based on mutual trust and respect. These are the vital things needed for the development of cooperation and teamwork which you need to focus in your leadership training.
Be loyal to your team
An organization is divided into two groups, the employees and the management. Most of the times the interests of the two groups don't go together and as a leader you would commonly be caught in between. You are a member of the management but you are working hand in hand with the employees. You also need to show concern for your team. Be on their side yet not compromising the management’s side. Let them understand that you know where they’re coming from. Through this you will gain their loyalty which is the basic component of cooperation.
Gain their trust
Gaining the trust of your members doesn't only give the chance to develop cooperation within the team. It also gives you the chance to gain loyalty from them. By gaining their loyalty they will be able to follow you without hesitation and doubt. However, gaining a person’s trust is more easily said than done but the most important thing required to gain a person’s trust is being genuine and consistent. Be always fair on all your members at all times.
Don't make them feel you’re just after your gains
In building a connection with your team, you should always make them feel that you’re not just using them for your own gains. You should learn that people don't like the feeling of being used by others. They would be discouraged and would tend not to do their best if they feel that way. You should make them feel that you’re pushing them not only for your own gains but also for their benefits. Avoid making them feel that you are just using them for your own reasons.
A team won’t ever be successful without teamwork and cooperation. Therefore as a leader try your very best to inspire teamwork on your team. Be a role model to your team and always show them that you are a team player. This would greatly encourage your team to follow your example.
Public speaking is a common cause of stress for everyone. The idea of standing in front of a large group with all eyes on you can make you feel fearful in almost all kinds of situation, for example giving a presentation in class, proposing a toast at dinner or making a work-related presentation. It seems to be a fear that’s impossible to overcome. If you have ever experienced this, you know while the anxiety may develop at the actual event, it is a feeling that begins much earlier than the actual day. There are many ways you can work on your confidence and prepare yourself for a public speaking event.
A consultant specializing (专门研究) in presentation skills can help you to overcome your sense of panic. Working with a consultant does not indicate that you have a major problem; it is only an approach to receiving guidance on relaxation strategies, such as deep breathing, which can help you deal with public speaking problems with ease.
Consultants can also help you work on your confidence. Confidence is extremely important in public speaking as it lets a speaker sound more convincing. Even well-established public speakers practice techniques such as meditation (沉思冥想) to calm themselves before a public appearance.
It’s well worth the time and effort to overcome the fear of public speaking, particularly if talks and presentations are part of your work description. Keep in mind that many of those around you are also struggling with this fear of public speaking. It will help you to become an able speaker if you can prepare beforehand. For example, you can put in time on planning your presentation in detail and practicing it many times in secret. As you get more and more familiar with your material, you’ll be able to fine-tune (微调) the details of your presentation and this will make you a confident speaker. Your speech will become excellent in terms of style and content.
Remember that the more you get into this pattern of feeling good about yourself, the stronger you will feel about approaching events when you have to make a speech. You can also work on physical details such as adjusting your tone (音调) before the presentation by doing some warm-up exercises.
In a word, believing in yourself and presenting yourself well can help you deeply impress your audience. And after a few speeches you’ll notice yourself overcoming the sense of panic that you now feel in public speaking situations.

Nowadays, science is developing at a high speed. With the development of science, many countries have improved their economy and raised their people’s living standards. Therefore, science is of great benefit to our daily life.
If we look at the things around us, we’ll find how closely our everyday life is related to science. In one case, at home we can turn on the central heating or air conditioner when we feel cold or hot, and we can watch TV or listen to the tape recorder for entertainment, and we can use a gas stove to cook our meals, and we have computers to help us with our work when we are working in the office, and we also have cars, buses, even planes as traffic tools when we go out. All these things are the results of the scientific development. It goes
without saying that without science our society cannot make rapid progress and our life cannot be comfortable and convenient.
Now that science is so significant in our daily life, we should try to make as many contributions as possible to the development of science. As college students, we must first of all study hard to gain useful scientific knowledge, and then put what we have learnt into practice. We should make the most of science to serve our society.
The Chinese are very generous when it comes to educating their children. Some parents send their children to the best schools or even abroad to England, the US or Australia, regardless of how much this costs. Many also want their children to take extra-curriculum (课外的) activities where they either learn a musical instrument or ballet, or other classes that will give them a head start in life. The Chinese believe that the more expensive an education is, the better it is, so parents often spend unreasonable amount of money on education. Even poor couples buy a computer for their son or daughter.
However, what most parents fail to see is that the best education they can give their children is usually very cheap. Parents can see that their children's skills vary; they will usually be skilled in some areas while poor in others. What most parents fail to realize though, is that today's children lack self-respect and self-confidence.
The problem is that parents are only educating their children on how to take multiple-choice tests and how to study effectively. They are not teaching them the most important skills they need to be confident, happy and clever.
Parents can help achieve this by teaching their children practical skills like cooking, sewing and other housework.
Teaching a child to cook will improve many of the skills that he will need later in life. Cooking demands patience and time. It is an enjoyable but difficult experience. A good cook always tries to improve his cooking, so he will learn to work hard and gradually finish his job successfully. The result, a well-cooked dinner, will give a child a lot of satisfaction and confidence.
An old machine such as a broken radio or TV set that you give your child as a toy may make him curious and arouse his interest. If he will spend hours looking at it, and try to mend it, your child might become an engineer when he grows up. Such activities do more than teach a child to read a book; but rather they teach them to think, and to use their minds. This is much more important than learning by reading a book.

Manners nowadays in metropolitan cities like London are practically non-existent. It is nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside to take the last remaining seat on the underway or bus.
This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued about by young men, who say that since women have claimed equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with politeness and that those who go out to work should take their turns in the rat race like anyone else. But women have never claimed to be physically strong as men. Even if it is not agreed, however, the fact remains that courtesy(礼节) should be shown to the old and the sick. Are we really so lost to all ideals of unselfishness that we can sit there indifferently(冷漠地) reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves, “First come, first served” while a grey-haired woman, a mother with a young child or a cripple(残障者) stands? Yet this is all too often seen.
Older people, tired and impatient from a day’s work, are not always considerate either — far from it. Many arguments break out as the older people push and squeeze(挤)each other to get on buses. One cannot approve this, of course, but one does feel there is just a little more excuse.
It seems urgent, not only that communications in transport should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and polite. All over cities, it seems that people are too tired and too rushed to be polite. Shop assistants won’t bother to assist; taxi drivers shout at each other as they dash dangerously around corners; bus conductors pull the bell before their desperate passengers have time to get on or off the bus, and so on. It seems to us that it is up to the young to do their small part to stop such lowering of moral standards.

Coffee has become a popular drink in our culture. Most people have a coffee maker at home for guests who come to visit. It naturally contains caffeine (咖啡因), which people in today’s society have somewhat come to rely on (依靠) to provide them with energy.
In the workplace many people start their day with a cup of coffee, and then continue to drink it until it’s time to go home. Many meetings also begin with a cup of coffee --- which is why so many workplaces now have a steady flow of office coffee.
Coffee is unsurprisingly one of the most traded agricultural products in the world, supporting the economy in many countries. Coffee is made from the roasted(烤,烘,焙) seeds of coffee cherries, which grow on trees in over 70 countries. The seeds are roasted to different degrees depending on the flavors wanted, and then are brewed (泡,煮) to create the coffee drink. Coffee usually sold is already roasted, so that all you have to do is add hot water.
Coffee is classified according to its appearance--light, medium light, medium, medium dark, dark, or very dark.
People argue a lot about whether the effect of drinking coffee is positive or negative. Some people think that drinking too much coffee is bad for our health. But you can buy decaffeinated (脱去咖啡因的) coffee, which has a lot less caffeine. Most people, however, would not care about the negative effects of drinking coffee.

If we agree that the function of education is to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we ought to concentrate on teaching children something really useful. Here is what our schools should teach.
Politeness is a mark of civilization. The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be accomplished by a smile and good manners.
Like it or not, our adult lives will be consumed by the struggle for money, but we don’t make an effort to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the beginning.
We’re likely not to accept something we are told, but that’s not what educated people do. Educated people are reasonable and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach critical(批判性的)thinking.
Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food(垃圾食品), they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.
All of us are part of society. We have rights and responsibilities. We ought to understand what they are. We have to know a little bit of history and geography, because we need to have an environment in which to relate to the people around us.
How will we test students on these? We can’t. But that’s not a reason to avoid teaching what is important. Our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children: “This is life, this is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it.”

Until just a few years ago,we doctors believed that the brain stopped making new neural(神经系统的)connections (meaning that your memory began to get worse)when the body stopped developing, usually in your early 20s. And we knew that, like any other body part, neurons weaken as we age. Loss of brain function due to neural breakdown was assumed to be a normal, unavoidable part of aging.
It turns out that we were wrong. In the past few years,it has been discovered that you can,in fact, make new neurons starting in your 20s and continuing well into old age. You can literally rewire the brain with new parts as the older parts wear out. How?Simple:Keep learning. Just as your body can pack on and condition new muscle, your brain can rebuild used-up neurons.
How strong is the evidence for this?Strong enough that a $200 million industry devoted to brain boosting software (products like Brain Age,MindFit,and Lumosity that supposedly improve your memory function)has sprung up out of nowhere. All“mental fitness”means are keeping your memory intact(everything from phone numbers to how to throw a football). So what can you do to stay smart?
Keep blood pressure down. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop cognitive impairment later in life.
Eat more vitamins. Like E(in nuts and sunflower seeds),B6 and B12(beef,tuna),and folic acid(leafy greens, citrus, berries),which help keep your brain’s chemistry in balance.
Exercise your brain. This is the best way to rebuild and strengthen those precious neurons. Learn to play chess or the guitar. When you’re at a stoplight, try to recall the starting lineup of the 1983 Celtics. See a movie that doesn’t feature Ben Stiller. Or read, like,a book.

Happiness is short, determined by every-thing from the weather to the size of your bank account. We’re not suggesting that you can reach a lasting state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to be far away from the paths of anxiety, anger frustration, and sadness once or even several times throughout the day.
1. Go to sleep. We have become a nation of sleep-deprived citizens. Taking a daily nap or getting into bed at 8 p.m. one night with a good book and turning the light out an hour later can have a better effect on your mood than any number of bubble baths or massages.
2. Hum along. Studies find that music makes parts of the brain active that produce happiness. It’s also relaxing. In one study, older adults who listened to their choice of music during the eye surgery had significantly lower heart rates, blood pressure, etc.
3. Volunteer. Helping others provides social interaction. While happy people are more likely to help others, helping others increases your happiness. One study found that volunteer work improved the aspects of well-being: happiness, life satisfaction, self-esteem(自尊), sense of control over life, and physical health.
4. Develop close relationships. People who have a lot of supportive friends are much more likely to have healthier blood pressure and stress hormone levels than those with two or fewer close friends. Women and a few men also seem to benefit from good relationships with their parents and spouses(配偶). People who feel lonely and depressed are three to five times more likely to get sick and die too early than those who have feelings of love, connection, and community.
5. Take care of the soul. Studies find that actively religious people are happier and cope better with crises, according to David Myers, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Hope College in Holland, Michigan. For many people, faith provides a sense of life’s meaning, feelings of acceptance, a reason to focus beyond yourself, and a new view on life’s sadness. Even if you’re not religious, strong faith may offer similar benefits.
