I’ve spent most of my career as a traveling salesman, and so I know that 1 is an occupational disease. But one year, my 2 gave me the cure for my homesickness.
It had black bright eyes, a red bow tie and orange feet--- a stuffed penguin (企鹅) that 3 about five inches tall. Attached to its left wing 4 a little sign with the hand-painted declaration “ I Love My Dad!”. I immediately 5 the penguin on my table.
On my next trip, I put the 6 in my suitcase. That night when I called home, my daughter Jeanine was 7 because the penguin had disappeared. “Honey, he’s here with me,” I explained, “ I brought him 8 ”.
9 , the penguin came with me --- as necessary as my briefcase. And we 10 along the way. In Albuquerque, I checked into a 11 , dropped my bag and ran to a meeting. When I returned, the maid had 12 the bed and stood the penguin on the pillow.
One night, I discovered the penguin 13 , and after a mad phone call, I learned I’d 14 it in my previous hotel room, 15 it had been rescued by a maid. I 16 a hundred miles to get it, and when I arrived at midnight, the penguin was waiting at the front desk. In the hotel lobby (大厅), other tired business travelers were 17 at the reunion of my penguin and me --- I think with a touch of 18 .
Jeanine is in college now, and I don’t travel 19 . The penguin sits on my table, a reminder that love is a wonderful traveling companion. All those years on 20 , it was the one thing I never left home without.

My chance came at last. Our school was going to hold a sports meet. I knew what it 21 to me so I got up very early to prepare for it. I 22 running and jumping. When I was 23 , I reminded myself of my promise and went on.
24 the time came nearer, I felt quite 25 . On the first day I came fourth in the 1500m 26 but I was far from 27 because what I wanted most was the highlight of the sports meeting—250x8 relay race. I would run the last leg for my team.
With a shot, the race began. All the students were 28 for their team. The competition was so 29 that I began to feel nervous. Before my turn came, my team was 30 the others. Even worse, I almost dropped the stick when I was trying to 31 it.

36 , I had proved to myself and those who had often laughed at me that I am not 37 at all! My classmates greeted me warmly and I hugged them tightly. I had won the prize as well as their 38 .
From the sports meeting, I learnt that sometimes things are not so difficult as they 39 to be. Just try your best without fear and you might be surprised at the 40 .

James shook his money box again. Nothing! He carefully 36 the coins that lay on the bed. $24.52 was all that he had. The bicycle he wanted was $90! 37 on earth was he going to get the 38 of the money? He knew that his friends all had bicycles. It was 39 to hang around with people when you were the only one without wheels. He thought about what he could do. There was no 40 to ask his parents, for he knew they had no money to 41 . There was only one way to get money, and that was to 42 it. He would have to find a job. 43 who would hire him and what could he do? He decided to ask Mr Clay for advice, who usually had _44 in most things. "Well, you can start right here," said Mr Clay. "My windows need cleaning and my car needs washing." That was the 45 of James’s odd-job (零工) business. For three months he worked every day after finishing his homework. He was surprised by the 46 jobs that people found for him to do. He took dogs and babies for walks, cleared out cupboards, and mended books. He lost count of the 47 of cars he washed and windows he cleaned, but the 48 increased and he knew that he would soon have 49 for the bicycle he was dying for. The day 50 came when James counted his money and found $94.32. He 51 no time and went down to the shop to pick up the bicycle he wanted. He rode 52 home, looking forward to showing his new bicycle to his friends. It had been hard 53 for the money, but James knew that he valued his bicycle far more 54 he had bought it with his own money. He had 55 what he thought was impossible, and that was worth even more than the bicycle.

It was a cold winter. The day my husband fell to his death, it started to snow, just 31 any November day. His 32 , when I found it, was lightly covered with snow. It snowed almost every day for the next four months, while I sat on the couch and watched it 33 . One morning, I walked slowly 34 and was surprised to see a snow remover clearing my driveway and the bent back of a woman clearing my walk. I dropped to my knees and crawled back upstairs, 35 those good people would not see me. I was 36 . My first thought was, how would I ever 37 them? I didn’t have the 38 to brush my hair, 39 clear someone’s walk.
Before Jon’s death, I felt proud that I 40 asked for favors. I identified myself by my competence and 41 . So who was I if I was no longer capable? How could I 42 myself if I just sat on the couch every day and watched the snow fall?
Learning to receive the love and 43 from others wasn’t easy. Friends cooked for me and I cried. Finally, my friend Kathy said, “Mary, cooking for you isn’t a 44 for me; it makes me feel good to be able to do something for you.”
Over and over, I heard 45 words from the people who supported me during those 46 days. One wise man told me, “You aren’t doing nothing because being fully open to your 47 may be the hardest work you will ever do.”
I am not the person I 48 was, but in many ways I have changed for the 49 . I’ve been surprised to learn that there is incredible freedom coming form 50 one’s worst fear and walking away whole. I believe there is strength, for sure, in accepting a dark period of our life.

A man found a cocoon of a moth. He took it home so that he could 31 the moth come out of the cocoon. On that day a small 32 appeared, he sat and watched the moth for several hours as the moth struggled to 33 the body through that little hole.
Soon it seemed to stop making any progress. It appeared as if it had 34 as far as it could and it could go no farther. It just seemed to be stuck. So the man, out of his kindness, decided to help the moth. He took a pair of scissors and cut off the 35 bit of the cocoon. The 36 then came out easily. But it had a swollen body and small, shriven(无用的) wings. The man continued to watch the moth because he expected that, at any moment, the wings would enlarge and 37 to be able to support the 38 , which would get smaller in time. Neither happened! In fact, the little moth spent the rest of its life 39 around with a small, swollen body and shriveled wings. It was 40 able to fly.
What the man in his kindness 41 was that the small cocoon and the 42 of the moth to get through the 43 opening was a way to push fluid(液体) 44 the body of moth 45 its wings so that it would be ready to fly 46 it got out of the cocoon. Freedom and 47 would come only after the struggle. By taking the moth of a struggle away, he also took away the moth’s health.
Sometimes struggles are exactly what we need in our life. If we were to 48 our lives without any difficulties, we would be disabled. We would not be as 49 as what we could have been. Give every opportunity a chance, leave no room for 50 .

Growing up, I always dreamed of being a professional figure skater. After years of hard work, I am living proof that dreams can come true.
When I was born, my parents immediately noticed something 36 and the doctor said I couldn't skate. I, however, 37 trying skating in an ice rink (溜冰场), where local skaters 38 perform ice shows. When I was nine years old I began training 46 . I would wake up at four o'clock in the morning six days a week and skate for five hours. Then I'd go to school. Since 47 has always been important in my family, I had no 48 but to find creative ways to fit in school studies throughout my 49 career.
After graduating from high school, I moved to Canada and set out to train full-time to give my dreams a chance at reality. In 1992 I went to compete in the Olympic Games. 50 , not my coach or even my family, ever talked to me about winning a gold medal. In fact, I wouldn't even 51 myself to think about it. I thought that would disturb me. 52 , I went with the attitude that I wanted to enjoy the Olympic spirit. 53 the expectation of all the people, I won the gold medal and words couldn't describe the overwhelming mixture of emotions I felt. Then I truly understood what 54 most in achieving a dream is nor to 55 it when you 1ace difficulties, but strive to make it come true.

A boy was walking home from school when he saw a large, tempting (诱人的)apple on one of the branches of an apple tree hanging out over a tall fence. The boy wasn’t much of a fruit-eater, 1 a bar of chocolate if given the choice, but, as they say, the forbidden fruit can be tempting. Seeing the apple, the boy wanted it. The more he looked at it, the 2 he felt and the more he wanted that apple.
3 as high as he could, but even at his tallest 4 , he was unable to touch it. He began to 5 up and down , as high as he could, at the 6 of each jump stretching his arms to get the apple . Still it remained out of 7 . Not giving up , he thought , if only he had something to 8 on . His school bag wouldn’t give enough height and he didn’t want to 9 the things inside , like his lunch box , pencil case , and Game boy. Looking around, he hoped he might find an old box , a rock , or , with luck , even a ladder , but it was a tidy neighborhood and there was nothing he could use. At first he felt angry and disappointed thinking about how hungry he had become from his 11 , and how he really wanted that apple .The more he 12 like this , the more unhappy he became.
However ,the boy of our story was a pretty smart guy, even if he couldn’t always get what he wanted .He started to say to himself . Several days ago, I met a stranger in the street who stopped and asked me directions. I 36 to show him the way to the destination(目的地),but to my 37 he coldly refused my offer. I asked him why. Finally he told me that he was 38 I would ask him for money if I 39 him in this way.
Money! I 40 deep into thought. Is it money that comes between us? Money itself has no 41 ; yet it cannot simply be 42 to be good or bad. The problem 43 what attitude we have towards it.
At present, we have a more 44 material life than before, but we’re becoming more and more 45 . Why? In my opinion, the 46 is the change in people’s personal 47 . They wrongly believe that 48 money should be their only aim in life, so they 49 all sorts of ways they can to 50 this aim.
They are afraid of being 51 and fooled. If everyone acts like this, what will our 52 be like?
Needless to say, money is becoming more and more important in our society, 53 it shouldn’t be the “be-all and end-all” of life. If a person only concentrates on 54 , he will be lonely and void(空虚).
It is up to us to make our lives happy, not money. We should try our best to help others 55 and freely. If everyone does so, our society will be better and better.
