In a classroom in any country, the teacher teaches more than art or history or language.
65
In a society such as the United States, people with different history, culture and language join together and they highly value individualism. 66 Teachers try to make each student special. Students do not have to memorize a lot of information; instead, they work individually and find answers by themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age students learn to form their own ideas and opinions. Their education encourages personal thought. The importance is placed on how to arrive at an answer rather than simply to get the correct answer.
In most Asian countries, people have the same language, history, and culture. 67
Children in China and Japan often work together and help each other with homework. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very traditional. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students repeat rules of information that they have been taught in order to keep them in mind.
68 In western countries teachers are taught to educate students. They make it easier for the students to learn for themselves. In eastern countries, however, teachers often feel that their task is to pass knowledge to students, or the students can’t learn anything.

第二节:以下是五位专家的建议。请匹配这些建议及对应的生活感想或经验介绍(A、B、C、D、E和F)。选项中有一项是多余选项。请将答案代号(A、B、C、D、E、F)写在答题卷61~65的相应位置上。
61. You should watch where your weight accumulates. You can use the waist. to. hip ratio to find if there is too much fat around the middle. Belly fat is especially dangerous because it release free fatty acids directly to the liver, virtually flooding it with fat.
62. If a particular food is important to you, eat it, but work it off. You should try to learn the art of compromise.
63. At the same time. the three-for-one is relatively simple to use. Fat grams and calories are listed on almost all boxed, canned or packaged foods—you have only to read the label and follow the rule. A five-year-old patient of mine can do this.
64. Drinking water is basic, and drinking enough of it is necessary. Patients are sometimes surprised that basic things work when they do them consistently.
65. Consume antioxidant foods. They protect the cholesterol C胆固醇), from oxidative damage, which helps prevent damage to blood…vessel walls.
A. More than nine years ago I was 70 pounds overweight and wore a very big dress. I had tried different diets and lost weight only to gain it back. Finally a simple “three. for. one’’ fat rule worked for me:consuming no more than three grams 0f fat for every 100 calories per serving. Following the rule and eating only foods that contain less than 30 percent fat, I spent eight months getting down to a size seven, and I’ve kept the weight off for nine years.
B. And for foods that aren’t packaged, you rely on what we already know about them. Red meat, as well as dishes made or served with butter, gravy, cream sauce or cheese, are almost never less than 30 percent fat—so you just don’t eat them. On the other hand, some non-packed foods—all fruits and vegetables。except avocadoes and olives—always pass the test. So do most fish。but not when fried.
C. I like vegetables, which are rich in vitamins. Most foods containing vitamins C and E(such as sweet potatoes, tomatoes, spinach and broccoli)are low in calories and are known as antioxidants(抗氧化物质). They can help reduce the possibility to develop hardening the arteries(动脉).
D. I gain weight around the belly—what we call abdominal obesity, the worst kind. The tendency seems to be hereditary(遗传的), and it’s common among men. This problem increases the risk of a stroke or heart attack. A guide I use in estimating belly fat is the waist-to—hip ratio, or WHR. To find yours. divide the circumference(周围)of your waist by the circumference of your hips. Women with ratios above 0. 8 and men with ratios above 1.0 are at increased health risk.
E. My ways of keeping healthy are very simple, and they are among our everyday activities:eating healthy food and doing exercise. In addition. I manage to do those basic things, such as drinking water, sleeping well and eating less fat. Sometimes I do some of the other things I used to do in my life like walking for half an hour a day.
F. Although I've put on ten pounds. I'm healthy and in good shape. I eat food that’s good for me…but 1 work off Susan’s homemade brownies(巧克力蛋糕), for example. To offset these extra calories, 1 walk for an hour or more, three times a week…often with Susan. We’re both busy and this is one way we have some quiet time together. Equally important, it permits me to practice dieting’s fine art of compromise.

The Monster of Lake Tianchi
The "Monster of Lake Tianchi" in the Changbai Mountains in Jilin province, northeast China, is back in the news after several recent sightings. The director of a local tourist office, Meng Fanying, said the monster, which seemed to be black in colour, was ten metres from the edge of the lake during the most recent sighting. "It jumped out of the water like a seal—about 200 people on Changbai's western peak saw it," he said. Although no one really got a clear look at the mysterious creature, Xue Junlin, a local photographer, claimed that its head looked like a horse.
In another recent sighting, a group of soldiers claim they saw an animal moving on the surface of the water. The soldiers, who were walking along the side of the lake, watched the creature swimming for about two minutes. "It was greenish-black and had a round head with 10-centimetre horns", one of the soldiers said.
A third report came from Li Xiaohe, who was visiting the lake with his family. He claims to have seen a round black creature moving quickly through the water. After three or four hundred metres it dived into the water. Ten minutes later the monster appeared again and repeated the action. Mr Li Xiaohe said that he and his family were able to see the monster clearly because the weather was fine and the lake was calm.
There have been reports of monsters in Lake Tianchi since the beginning of the last century, although no one has seen one close up. Some photos have been taken but they are not clear because it was too far away. Many people think the monster may be a distant cousin of the Loch Ness monster in Scotland. They also think that there might be similar creatures in other lakes around the world. Scientists, however, are sceptical. They say that the low-temperature lake is unlikely to be able to support such large living creatures.
Lake Tianchi is the highest volcanic lake in the world. It is 2,189 metres high and covers an area of about ten square kilometres. In places it is more than 370 metres deep.

In today’s society, everyone is busy and running at a fast pace each day. It does not matter what the reason is; your time is precious and needs to be managed effectively. You need cheap meal ideas that help you save your time and money and still provide a healthy and nutritious (有营养的) dinner for you and your family.
The fast food makers know we have little time and use this very thing to make themselves successful. The idea of coming home after a long day at work and cooking for four or five people is not something we look forward to. This is why they offer you cheap food that requires no cooking, no cleaning, and only 25 minutes to pick up.
But eating so much fast food will cause body fatness and fast food is not nutritious, so it’s not the healthiest choice to consider. There are some very cheap meal ideas that take almost no time to prepare and will make coming home for a good meal more enjoyable.
The first cheap meal idea includes meat, vegetables and rice all in one dish. Not only is this a cheap meal idea, but it is fast since it can be made in only 20 minutes.
You can quickly make some pancakes and scrambled eggs (摊鸡蛋) for the family in about 30 minutes. If you think it is strange to eat breakfast food for dinner, consider how the same foods give you what you need to go through an entire day.
Another cheap meal idea to try is a “macaroni (通心粉) and cheese with meat” dish, which only takes around 20 minutes to cook.
If you are interested in these cheap meal ideas, you’re welcome to visit our website for details. When you fix one of these or other cheap meal ideas at home, you are taking time out of your busy day to treat yourself and your family in a special way.

Experts debunk Maya doomsday(末日) predictions -- But that hasn't stopped books, movies from cashing in.
If the ancient Maya and filmmaker Roland Emmerich are correct, the apocalypse(大灾变) will happen very fast, maybe quicker than his new 2½-hour movie.
Predictions of global ruination are rippling around the globe with seismic(地震的) force, all loosely based on a 5,000-year Maya calendar that ends Dec. 21, 2012. Countless Web sites and blogs anticipate(预料) the end of days, as do various New Age groups and would-be prophets(预言者) offering guidance and how-to tips. On Amazon.com , you can read hundreds of book titles combining the year 2012 with terms such as “apocalypse,” “catastrophe” and “end of the world.”
As always, doomsday sells — and a lot of people are buying it.
“There's the psychobabble(心理呓语) aspect,” said Robert Epstein, former editor of Psychology Today magazine and a lecturer at the University of California San Diego. “It's the Sigmund Freud/death wish idea: People glom onto(对…感兴趣) doomsday predictions because there's some small part of them that wants to die, and die spectacularly(壮观的). I don't believe it, but it's one way to look at this.”
It's Emmerich's way. The German director specializes in wreaking havoc on an epic scale, from climatic cataclysm in 2004's “The Day After Tomorrow” to angry aliens and reptiles in “Independence Day” and “Godzilla.” In “2012,” he finishes the job.
The digitized disasters of “2012” are oversized, overwrought and sometimes literally over the top, as when a humongous tsunami washes over the Himalayan mountains, whose average height exceeds 20,000 feet. Meanwhile in Los Angeles, a 10.5-magnitude earthquake — a temblor at least 30 times more powerful than any real quake ever recorded — yanks the city apart like a giant zipper, sending chunks sliding into the Pacific Ocean.
That's not physically possible, of course. Nor is a 10.5-magnitude quake, said Thomas Rockwell, a geologist at San Diego State University. To generate that much energy, “you'd need a rupture that extends all around the planet.”
All of that other stuff “is pure Hollywood bunk,” said Bernard Jackson at the UCSD Center for Astrophysics and Space Sciences.
Entertaining, though, unless you happen to believe the Maya really predicted the end of the world. They didn't, said Geoff Braswell, a UCSD anthropologist. The long-count calendar doesn't signal the end of anything except the end of that particular calendar. “It's just like a car odometer. Unfortunately, hardly anybody reads ancient Mayan. Modern media hype(骗局), on the other hand, is almost inescapable.
Nicholas Christenfeld, a professor of psychology at UCSD, suggests a more elemental human need. Being swallowed by the Earth or incinerated in a giant fireball “fits neatly with the idea that people want to believe there's a plan, that existence isn't random and pointless,” Christenfeld said.
“We all missed creation, but if we can bear witness at the other end, be part of some grand cosmic destruction, that gives life meaning,” he said.
It helps, too, not to think very hard about the facts, said Lou Manza, a professor of psychology at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa. “These claims have been around forever, and they have all been false, 100 percent wrong,” Manza said.
Of course, prognosticators(预言者, 占卜者) usually have an explanation for that, Christenfeld said.
“They might say it was a misinterpretation,” he said. “They got the date wrong. They might claim humanity acted in time to prevent the destruction. Or faith came to the rescue because people believed something bad was going to happen, it didn't have to happen.”

New research says 35 percent of child deaths worldwide are caused by hunger. The research comes from poor to middle-income countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Robert Black from the Bloomberg School of Public Health at Johns Hopkins University in Maryland is the lead writer of the research. He says more than 3.5 million mothers and children under five die in poor countries each year because of hunger.
He says about two million children die from underdevelopment, either before or after birth. Millions of others who survive face a lifetime of disabilities or early death and the effects are not just physical. Poor mental development also results from hunger as children grow. Then the
cycle of poverty and hunger often continues for their children.
Doctor Black says hungry children can have conditions like high blood pressure and heart disease as a result of hunger. He says the studies show that food programs need to place the greatest importance on the first two years of life. Hungry children can suffer their whole life damage from age two.
It is high time their diets were improved. Diets should include foods rich in vitamin A and other vitamins and minerals. The researchers say early help such as this could reduce child deaths by 25%.
This research has also faced some criticism. A medical aid group says the researchers underestimate(低估) the number of child deaths due to hunger. The researchers say there are findings that support this treatment but more studies are needed to compare it to hospital care.

In a memory – based competition between you and a chimp (猩猩); who do you think would win? If you put yourself on top, you might want to guess again.
In a test that challenged participants to remember numbers, a young chimp performed better than Japanese college students.
Here's how the test worked. At Kyoto University in Japan, human students and chimpanzee participants sat in front of a computer. Five numbers, ranging from 1 to 9, were combined with one another and then, they appeared at random places on the screen.
The numbers stayed on the screen for less than a second. In the first test, for example, participants saw the numbers for 650 milliseconds (about two- thirds of a second).
Then, each number disappeared and they saw a white square instead. Participants had to touch the squares in numerical order, based on the numbers that had been there a moment before.
In this test, the students touched the boxes in the correct order about 80 percent of the time. A young chimp named Ayumu performed equally well.
During a harder test, participants were only able to see the numbers for 210 milliseconds.
This time, students only succeeded in putting the boxes in the correct order about 40 percent of the time. But Ayumu still could select the boxes in the right order nearly 80 percent of the time.
Some people have what's called a "photographic memory", which allows them to remember a surprising number of details after just a quick look at something. Ayumu's memory might work in a similar way, says lead researcher Tetsuro Matsuzawa.
The chimp's young age might have something to do with his impressive performance, too. In previous tests, the Japanese researchers found that young chimps performed better than their mothers.
The scientists are interested to see whether Ayumu loses his strong memory as he arrows older. They already know that young children sometimes have sharp memories when offered something photographical, but they lose this ability over time.

A long story about people is usually called a novel. It can be about any kind of man, woman, or child. It can be about kings, or Chicago newsboys, or housewives. The French writer, Victor Hugo, wrote his novel Les Miserables about a poor man who stole a loaf of bread. The American writer, Ernest Hemingway, wrote A Farewell to Arms about a young American with the Italian Army in World War One.
A novel can tell the story of any kind of action, over any period of time. The modern Irish writer, James, Joyce, covers less than twenty- four hours in Ulysses. Yet, Joyce takes a thousand pages to tell all that happens from the time one man gets up in the morning until he goes to bed early the next morning. A German writer, Herman Hesse, uses only one hundred and fifty pages in his novel Demian to cover a boy’s life from the age of ten until he becomes a young man.
A novel does not just tell the things that people do. It also tells why they do them. The Badge of Courage, by the American novelist, Stephen Crane, tells about a young soldier in the War between the states who runs away the first time he is in battle. The book shows why he acted as he did. It describes his mental suffering until he overcomes his fears.
People buy novels because they enjoy reading about other people. The novel satisfies the human desire to know and understand our fellow creatures.

Making a public speech is most people’s least favorite thing. The reason is that we are all afraid of making fools of ourselves. The more important the speech is, the more frightened we become .But stop biting your finger-nails. Public speaking is easy. It’s just a simple talking, and you talk all the time. Although I’m basically shy (honest!), I’ve been making speeches and talking on radio and television for more than 30 years. Anybody who can talk can speak in public. Here are some of the lessons I have learned:
1. Keep your speech simple. Your audience will leave with one or two of your main ideas, that is to say, most people can remember one or two of your ideas well, one or two, not ten or twenty. So you should prepare one or two of your main ideas well. But if you can’t express what you want to get across, then your speech is not focused well enough. And if you don’t have a clear idea of what you want to say, there’s no way your audience will.
2. Organize your speech well. No matter how long or short your speech is, you have to organize your speech—how you are going to open or begin, what major points you want to make and how you’re going to close or end. Because a strong close is very important and critical(关键的): the last thing you say is what your audience will most likely remember. If not, they will be confused.
3. Keep your speech not long. The standard length of a speech is usually 12 minutes. Most people can’t focus their attention on one thing for too long time, which will make them tired and lose their interest. If you pay no attention to your audience’s reaction(反应),the audience will get bored. Of course, your speech proves a failure.
Following these suggestions above, you can make a good speech in public, and you will be an excellent speaker, I think.

Healthy Diets
Instead of buying only fresh foods,Americans nowdays buy many more convenience foods. There are foods which are already partly or completely prepared .Many of them are frozen, such as frozen dinner,heat-and-serve French fries ,and frozen pizzas. There are also many canned (put in a can) convenience foods. such as ready-made spaghetti (意大利细条实心面),soups, stews (炖熟菜肴),and vegetables.
Convenience foods save time and trouble. They are popular with people who are busy or who don’t like to cook or wash dishes. But they ofen cost more than fresh ,unprepared foods and may contain artificial additives (a chemical added to the food). Also, many people feel they don’t taste as good as home cooked foods.
Health food and Co-ops
In the 1960s,a“back-to-the-earth”movement was started by young people in the United States. The movement was a reaction against the harmful effects of technology. From the movement came a new understanding of food and health. Many people now prefer natural and organic(chemical-free)foods to the prepared foods sold in health food stores and in food co-ops,which are small stores and where customers help manage the store .In co-ops,food is usually not packaged.Customers bring their own bags and jars and scoop(汲取) their food out of boxes or baskets.
