The e-book is a downloadable book that can be put right onto your e-reader, certain cell-phones and computers. There are websites that sell e-books where you can buy them and load them right onto whatever device you choose. The e-book makes it possible to take reading with you, without the mess of carrying dozens of books around with you.
However, not all book authors are okay with having their books in digital format(格式). The writer of Harry Potter says that her books will never be an e-book, and many just like her feel the same way. However, there are lots of authors who absolutely love the idea and feel it’s the next step to keep books alive.
The e-book can be loaded onto an e-reader which is a mini-device that is slim and compact just like a cell phone. It usually has a touch pad screen and can hold a few hundred books. That ’s perfect news for people who travel on planes or go on holidays and would love to take a collection with them but wouldn’t carry fifty hard covers.
The other great thing about e-readers is that you can read e-books on them quickly and there’s no need for two hands to hold the book and turn the page; it is more convenient for people to read it. Most of them also have a nightlight, so if you want to read at night but don’t want a big light on to wake your partner, the e-reader is ideal. You can also use it on a plane, train or bus when it’s dark.
Websites that sell e-books have their sites looking just like ordinary bookstore websites. There is a list for best sellers and a new release section. There are also e-books on sale and gift certificates available to give to someone who also downloads e-books. They seem to cost the same amount of money as buying a paperback book.

“Happy New Year!” Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet each other on New Year’s Day. But it wasn’t always January 1 that marked the New Year.
At least 4,000 years ago, the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching farmers’ fields. This happened at the end of September.
The Babylonians held a festival in the spring, on March 23, to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.
The date January 1 was picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC. The month of January originates from the Roman god, Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. The new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.
In Vietnam, the New Year holiday happens in February. They buy fresh flowers and a peach blossom to put in their house, following the Vietnamese custom.
Thailand has its specific New Year’s date; it’s different from the normal calendar. The Thai New Year is celebrated on April 13. On this day, Thai people play with water, throwing it on each other. It is intended to bring good luck during the New Year ahead.
In China, the more favorable New Year is usually celebrated in February according to lunar calendar (阴历). On New Year’s Eve, all family members sit together at table, enjoying lots of auspicious foods such as dumplings, chicken to bring good luck.

The Auto Show, which is being held right now in Beijing, has risen to the top ranks of global auto industry events, as China has become the world's biggest auto market. For many Chinese youngsters, having a car has become a new lifestyle reflecting freedom and success
First, there is the thrill of individual mobility and freedom, going from one place to another in their own time, and on their own terms.
"I like the speed; I like the freedom; I can't imagine not having a car," Hou Mingxin, 39, owner of two cars, told the Financial Times.
And these youngsters don't just want freedom through car ownership, but also a larger social circle. Thanks to the Internet, car owners can band together for leisure activities, such as going strawberry picking in the countryside. It is an activity that many car lovers would never have attempted without the benefits of a car.
In China, the car is also a status symbol."It's an opportunity to declare personal success," said Michael Dunne, a Shanghai-based managing director of J.D.Power and Associates, an auto industry group."The small, environmentally-friendly models are not best sellers in China. The Chinese are crazy about big cars, a symbol of achievement," said Dunne.
Thanks to a growing middle-class, and an increasingly developed network of roads, the number of car owners in China is rapidly increasing. China last year replaced the US and became the world's largest car market with 13.6 million vehicles sold.
But the car craze(狂热) has raised environmental and traffic concerns. Many worry that car emissions could take pollution to a new level. Heavy traffic also troubles many Chinese cities.
China is discovering the romance of the road just as developed countries seem to have lost it. “The younger generation in mature markets is unwilling to buy cars, especially in Europe and Japan," says Klaus Paur, of TNS Auto in Shanghai.
In developed countries, owning a car can be expensive, with the parking fees car insurance and various taxes, said a 2008 article in US magazine Newsweek.
"Having a car is so 20th century," Kimiyuki Suda, a young white collar worker from Tokyo told Newsweek. He mostly uses subways and trains."It's not inconvenient at all."

You may admire both the romantic love story and the mysterious city of Rome in the movie Roman Holiday. If you are planning to visit Rome, here are some cultural dos and don’ts you should know.
Coffee Etiquette: Italian breakfast consists of pastry and a cup of Cappuccino or shot of espresso. Cappuccino is generally a morning drink and is not drunk after noon by real Italians. A post-dinner espresso, however, is a common practice.
Dinner Rules: Guests are expected to arrive for dinner reservations at least fifteen minutes late. In many restaurants, printed menus are for tourists. Regular patrons know to ask for the daily specials, which typically feature the freshest ingredients. Bread, is rarely together with butter or olive oil.
Drink the Water: Rome has plenty of public water fountains, and real Romans and their dogs always drink directly from them. Many people also refill their water bottle from these fountains.
Mind the Traffic: Unless there's a traffic light, or you are in a crosswalk, don't expect cars to stop for you. Though crosswalks go first, in a car – crazy city, still you’d better keep cautious and walk cautiously.
Money: Always have some euros with you. Most major hotels, restaurants, and shops take credit cards, but many smaller operations either will either be unwilling to accept them for smaller purchases or do not accept credit cards at all. ATMs are available around the city and at the airports.
About Soccer: Most Italian men are passionate about their soccer. Arm yourself with some knowledge of Italy's soccer scene, and you will find ready conversation partners almost everywhere.
The Romans: The people here love to share their thoughts, opinions and emotions. They are creative, passionate, playful, occasionally rude or vain but always entertaining, and almost always good – humored.

London - Police are monitoring social networking sites popular with teenagers such as Bebo, Facebook and MySpace after claims that they are being used to organize mass brawls (对骂).
Kent Police believe that teenagers have been using the Internet to arrange “fight club” contests watched by up to 100 spectators in a public park.
At least six organized fights have taken place in Brenchley Gardens in Maidstone, Kent, according to one teenage blogger. (59) During one of the fights a 14-year-old boy was arrested for carrying a hunting knife. Kent Police have now ordered specialist officers to monitor sites such as Bebo.
Chief Inspector Ian Hall said: “(60) We are aware of attempts to organize fights using technology such as websites and mobile phones. Pupils from some schools in the area may be involved in this type of anti-social behavior and we are working with schools to eradicate (根除) the problem.”
According to one blogger the fights usually take place on Saturday nights. The contests are named after the Hollywood film Fight Club starring Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. The central characters fight for the adrenaline rush but the film has an ironic twist (歪曲) apparently lost on some of its audience.
This week police in Macclesfield, Cheshire, arrested six teenagers on suspicion of public order offences after an investigation into a series of assaults (袭击). The youths, aged 16 and 17, were released on police bail (保释). The officers discovered that attacks had been discussed and possibly even prearranged using the Bebo websites.
In Collumpton, Devon, last weekend police intercepted (阻止) 30 pupils going to a mass brawl carrying metal bars, pieces of wood and chain.

Rest is critical to life and work and a positive attitude towards rest needs to be maintained, for enough rest is significant to our body and mind while a lack of adequate rest, as well as misleading attitudes to rest, will do great harm to our health.
Rest is vital to our ability to function at our best. Recent news stories report that scientists are learning surprising things about the importance of sleep. There is enough evidence suggesting that rest will refresh us, enabling our body and mind to work efficiently. Besides, rest is important for more than that; it is helpful in setting appropriate goals and deciding what goals to attain first. Those who are caught up in extremely busy lives lack the time to think about what they are doing and to make objective decisions, which blocks the maximization of their potential.
On the contrary, lack of adequate rest damages brain function, so much so that sleep experts have been able to measure drops in IQ in patients who are short of sleep. Other studies have presented a negative effect on body movements in sleep-wanting subjects. It should not, therefore, be a surprise that the California Highway Patrol has stated that sleep-wanting drivers are as great a threat to road safety as are drunk drivers.
However, rest is widely misunderstood by some people. Instead of sleep, they go to pubs and clubs and claim that this kind of entertaining is rest. For example, what they call social drinking or having a smoke with friends. Nowadays, the economy forces people to drink and gamble for the sake of the circles one moves in. This is what fools claim thoughtlessly that it’s restful. The truth is that rest means not using our labor both physically and mentally, even spiritually.
We need to rest correctly and sufficiently; otherwise, tiredness and illness will occur. Without sufficient rest, good work is impossible.Rest is critical; it is not an end in itself.
When you take a walk in any of the cities in the West, you often see a lot of people walking dogs. 48 is still true that a dog is the 49 useful and faithful animal in the world, 50 the reason why people keep a dog has changed. In the old days people used to train dogs to protect themselves against animal attacks. And later they came to realize that a dog was not 51 useful for protection but willing to obey his master. But now people in the city need not protect themselves against attacks of animals. 52
do they keep dogs, then? Some people keep dogs to protect themselves from robbery. But the most important reason is 53 companionship. A dog is his best friend for
54 child when he has no friends to play with. For young couples, a dog is their child when they have 55 children. For old couples, a dog is also their child when their real children have grown up.
