I saved the grain carefully and finally had enough to plant. I built a wall around my garden to keep the wild goats away.

Then when my crop bore its fruit, the birds discovered it. The birds were not afraid of my dog at all. I shot them but as soon as I walked away, they returned. At last, I killed some birds and hung them among the crop, hoping they would serve as the scarecrows, which turned out to be successful. By harvest time, I had nearly two bushels of rice and two and a half bushels of wheat.

With my new grain to store, I found a new problem. The fine grain ran through my baskets. It took me nearly two months to form and dry two ugly pots﹣ one for rice and one for wheat.

Next I formed a clay oven and made some other tools from hard wood and cloth to bake bread. I made and baked bread in my oven. I spent the third year on the island in farming and baking.

Soon after that,I began to think of my days sailing in a tidy boat with Xury. I wished to have a boat and explore the island by sea.

I tried to turn over the ship's boat that I had seen washed up, but failed. I was still determined to have a boat. So I chose a strong tree and spent weeks cutting it down. Then it took me months to turn it from tree to boat.

When it was time to launch, I realized I had made my boat too far from the nearest stream. The boat was far too heavy for me to move. I tried bringing the water to the boat instead of the boat to the water. I soon saw it would take me twenty years of constant labor.

I celebrated my fourth year on the island with two boats, but I was no closer to a sea journey

Traditional Chinese culture is catching the world's eyes. The good traditional Chinese culture is our great treasure. President Xi Jinping says we should have a high of culture confidence. He gave advice to the people who have strong feelings to control the world. He said they should give up the desires (欲望).

Non﹣action (无为) does not mean that one should do nothing but passively wait for something to be achieved. What he meant is that human should follow the way of nature and try not to break the rule of nature.

De means"Virtue(德行)". Lao zi thought the great virtue is like water. And he thinks nothing in the world is weaker than water, yet nothing is stronger than water when it comes. It can nearly destroy everything strong. In ancient China, there is also a saying, water can hold the boat, it can also make the boat tum upside down. Water is a typical (典型的) example of the weak beating the strong.

Never stop for crying;

All that' s great and good is done

Just by patient trying.

Though young birds,in flying,fall,

Still their wings grow stronger;

And the next time they can keep

The Last Leaf is a short story written by US author O. Henry. One of the most famous short story writers in history. His stories are known for their surprising endings, now called "O. Henry endings".

In the story of The Last Leaf, Sue and Joanna are two artists living in New York City. Unfortunately, Joanna is ill and will probably die. In the hospital, something touching and unexpected happens. Let's find out more in the following excerpt(节选).

Sue looked out of the window. All she saw was an old yellow and green ivy(常青藤) plant. The half﹣dead plant had few leaves on it because of the autumn winds.

"There are only five, now," said Joanna.

"Five what, dear? What are you counting?"

"The ivy leaves," replied Joanna. "When the last one goes, I'll die. I've known that for two days. Didn't the doctor tell you about it?"

"Joanna, don't say that. Now, eat some soup and I'll finish my picture."

"I don't want any soup," said Joanna, looking out of the window. "Now there are only four."

"Joanna dear, try to sleep. I must ask Mr. Berman to come up. I want to draw a picture of him as a poor old farmer."

Mr. Berman, who was over 60years old, lived downstairs. He was a painter, too, but he never sold anything, and he drank a lot. Sue told him all about what Joanna was saying.

"She can't really think that this will happen! The poor woman!" he said.

Finally there was only one last leaf on the ivy plant. After a few windy days, the leaf was still there.

"Susie," said Joanna, "I've been a bad girl. That last leaf is telling me that it was very wrong of me to want to die. Bring me some soup, dear."

The next day, the doctor said: "She's out of danger. But poor Mr. Berman downstairs is dying. There's no hope for him, I'm afraid."

That afternoon Sue went into Joanna's bedroom.

"Joanna dear, Mr. Berman died today. And do you know why? One terrible, cold wet night he took a ladder and some green and yellow paint and he climbed up, and ﹣ oh, look at the last ivy leaf on the wall! Why didn't it ever move in the wind? Can't you see? It was Mr. Berman's last great picture. He painted it there the night that the last leaf fell."

48. In this sentence "She can't really think that this will happen!", "this" refers to

A: Joanna didn't eat any soup

B: The doctor said she would die

C: Joanna counted the leaves of the ivy plant

D: Joanna thought when the last ivy leaf went, she would die

49. Why didn't the last ivy leaf fall after a few windy days?

A: Because it was painted on the wall.

B: Because the leaf was green.

C: Because the wind wasn't strong.

D: Because it was tied to the tree.

50. Why did Mr. Berman paint an ivy leaf on that wall on a terrible, cold wet night? __

A: Because Susie asked him to do so.

B: Because he drank a lot and nobody could stop him.

C: Because he liked the ivy plant and wanted to paint it before he died.

D: Because that night the last ivy leaf fell, he didn't want Joanna to lose hope.

51. From the passage we know that

A: Joanna was a bad girl without hope in her life

B: Mr. Berman was a very kind, great artist

C: Susie never let Mr. Berman know what Joanna said.

D: Mr. Berman's pictures were so terrible that he couldn't sell them out.

Natural scenes often become the themes of poetry. Poets watch nature closely and present(呈现) its beauty in their poems. For example, poets may describe natural scenes such as a spring day or a snowy day. Besides, poets often express their feelings about nature by creating lively images(形象) in poems.

With images, poets can describe the details (细节) of something colorfully and clearly. Readers, on the other hand, can connect their own experiences with the images in the poems so that they can share the poets' ideas. Now let's read the poem "Who Has Seen the Wind?"

When we read the lines "When the leaves hang trembling" and "When the trees bow down their heads," they remind us of a windy day. The poet successfully creates an image of the wind by describing details of the scene. These help readers think of the moment when the wind passes by. We might even bow our own heads, imagining that we are the trees.

In the poem "Night," Blake describes many details of a night scene. People know very well what they can see at night, like stars or the moon. However, Blake sees more than just the moon itself; he sees the moon as a flower, smiling at us from up in the sky. So the moon is really compared to a flower and personified(拟人化) as a smiling person.

She opened the door and looked through it.At the end of a low passage she saw a beautiful garden. It was full of brightly coloured flowers and fountains.

"Oh,how beautiful!" she said."I'd love to go there but I'm too big to get through the door."

She walked back to the table. There was a bottle on it now.

"I'm sure that bottle wasn't there before,"she said ,a little confused.

She put down the key and picked up the bottle. She read the words "DRINK ME"on it.Alice wasn't a stupid girl. She didn't drink it immediately.First she looked at the bottle carefully. There wasn' t a label on it that said" POISON".

So she put the bottle to her lips and drank.

"Mmm, it's nice,"she said.It tasted like cherry tart, pineapple, roast turkey and toast﹣all the things that she liked to eat﹣so she drank some more. And some more.Soon the bottle was empty.

"What a curious feeling,"she said."I'm getting smaller and smaller."It was true! She was now as small as her cat Dinah.

"Good! I can go through the door into the garden,"she said. But,poor Alice! When she got to the door, she didn't have the key! It was on the table. She couldn' t reach it because she was too small now. She sat down and cried.

After a while she said, "Alice!Stop crying. Crying doesn't help. Dry your tears immediately! "

When she looked at the table again, she saw a small glass box under it.She picked it up and opened it.There was a small cake inside. It had the words"EAT ME"on it.She put a small piece of it in her mouth.

"If I grow bigger I can reach the key,"she thought. "And if I grow smaller I can go under the door."

But nothing happened so she finished it
