More and more students want to study in “hot” majors. As a result, many students give up their interests and study in those areas such as foreign languages, international business and law, etc. Fewer and fewer students choose scientific majors, such as math, physics and biology, and art majors, like history, Chinese and philosophy. Only a few students can study in these “hot” majors, because the number of these “hot” majors is limited(有限的).
If one has no interest in his work or study, how can he do well? I learned this from one of my classmates. He is from the countryside. His parents are farmers. Though he likes biology, he chose international business. He wants to live a life which is different from that of his parents.
In the end, he found he was not interested in doing business. He found all the subjects tiresome. Maybe this wouldn’t have happened if he had chosen his major according to his own interest. Choosing a major in university does not decide one’s whole life. Majors which are not “hot” today may become the “hot” majors of tomorrow. Choosing your major according to your own interest is the best way to succeed.
根据短文内容,按要求完成各题
According to the text, what are the “hot” majors today?

Why can’t many students study in the “hot” majors?

How can people do their work and study well?

According to the writer, if you want to succeed what should you do?

Does the writer think that people should give up their own interest in order to choose the “hot” majors?

My friend Jenny always takes a walkman with her and listen to loud music. I think it may hurt her ears. But she doesn’t seem to care.

Jack let me play with his favorite toy car. I make it go too fast and it crashed.
All my friends have many new clothes. They wear clothes in different style every day. But my parents can’t afford it. I think it’s a shame.
My close friend always wants me to give him the answers in exams. I do that. But I’m afraid I might be caught. If I don’t do that, he might not be my friend any more.

If you think you are too shy and want to be a little bit braver, just try the following things.
Be open to others. Tell people you are shy. There is no need to hide it. When they get to know you are a shy kid, they will understand you better. This also helps you feel more comfortable in talks.
Try to smile more. When you smile , people think you are friendly and easy to talk with. Remember that other people have feelings, too; and most people will stay away from an angry-looking face.
Learn to be a good talker. If you find it hard to start a conversation, say something nice about people around you. Think about how great you feel when someone says something nice to you. Doesn’t it make you want to keep talking to that person?
Get your attention elsewhere. Think more about ways to enjoy parties or games. Don’t waste time worrying about your look or whether people like you or not. You will become relaxed and find it’s not so hard to talk with others.
Take one small step at a time. Each time when you say “Hi!” or smile at someone, say to yourself “You can make it.” Keep trying and one day you’ll never feel shy when you talk to others.

We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waster every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you to live a green life.
Remember these three words; reduce, reuse and recycle(减量、再使用和再循环).
Reduce means “use less”. Don't waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think if it is really necessary or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local products if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad.
Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should take care of them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don't use a paper cup or a paper bag. It's better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.
Recycle means “change things into something else”. Although it takes energy to change something into something else, it's better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighbourhood and take part in recycling programmes. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.

Then one day I watched an English movie—Toy Story. I fell in love with this exciting and funny movie. So I began to watch other English movies, too. Although(尽管) I could not understand everything the characters(角色) said, their body language and the expressions(表情) on their faces help me get the meaning(意思). I understood I could get the meaning by listening for just the key words. I found out that listening to something interesting is the secret to the language learning. As a young man, Al was a skilled artist, with a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a serious stomachache. Neither Al nor his wife took it very seriously. But the boy died suddenly that night.
The death could have been avoided if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, so Al always felt he was guilty(内疚). To make matters worse, his wife left him a short time later, leaving him alone with his six-year-old younger son. The hurt and pain were more than Al could stand, and he turned to alcohol(酒精) for help.
Al began to lose everything he had—his land, house, etc. Finally Al died alone in a small bar. Hearing of Al’s death, I thought, “What a complete failure(失败)!”
I knew Al’s now adult son, Ernie. He is one of the kindest, most caring, most loving men I have ever known. I saw the love between Ernie and his children, thinking that kindness and caring had to come from somewhere.
I hadn’t heard Ernie talked much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what on earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, “As a child until I left home at 18, Al came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, ‘Love you, son.’”
Tears came to my eyes as I realized that I had been a fool to tell Al as a failure. He had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.
根据短文内容判断正(T)误(F)。
At first there were four people in Al’s family.
Al always felt he was guilty because his wife left him.
Al sold everything he had—his land, house to drink alcohol.
Ernie was a complete failure just like his father.
At the end of the story, the writer thought Al was a loving father.
