There are some rules for the students at boarding schools to obey. Students study and live together. They can’t go outside if they are not allowed to. Most boarding schools have a “light out” time. So when it’s time to go to bed, all the lights in the bedrooms are turned off.
Nearly all students at boarding schools wear a school uniform. Boys usually wear a shirt and a tie, and girls wear a white blouse, sometimes also a tie and a skirt. As students get older, the rules become less strict.
In the UK, boarding schools provide students with delicious food. They can choose to have a full English breakfast or simply bread. They can also choose between a meal with no meat and another meal at lunch and dinner. Students can also make themselves something to eat at any time in a kitchen.

Frank and Mary Smith wake up in their comfortable house in the morning and switch on the bedroom computer to get the latest news. They used to read the Times, but changed to electronic newspapers many years ago.
There is the usual news about space: another space flight has returned from Mars and scientists have discovered a new planet. Then they turn to business news: the US dollar has risen greatly in Shanghai, one of the world's leading business centres. Mary tells the computer to buy 5,000 dollars, and there is a quick response that it has been done.
As they watch the screen, Mary orders one of the household robots to make coffee for them.
Frank disappears into the study to join a video conference with his partners around the world. He is a computer engineer, working for several companies. This is his third job: he used to be in marketing and then television.
Mary has a quick look at the shopping channels - the usual selection of electric cars, household robots and cheap travel offers - before picking up the video phone to talk to her assistant. She also has a job and she is doing medical research. Both she and Frank used to have an office desk in London, but in 2014 they decided to move to the seaside and work from home.
Frank and Mary have one daughter, Louise, who also has her own workstation at home. She goes to school only one day a week, mainly to play with other students. Classrooms disappeared in 2030 because there was no longer any need for them: communications systems have made it much easier to learn at home.
Louise, now thirteen, is studying Chinese at present, which has become a world language as important as English. Louise has many Chinese friends. They communicate by computer.
According to the family doctor, Louise will live to at least 130. Her wish is to work for a few decades (十年) and then spend her time on music and painting.

Paying for bus rides with plastic usually makes people think of plastic bus cards. But one Indonesian city has decided to accept plastic recyclable waste in place of money for city buses.
Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city, located on the eastern end of the country′s main island Java, made this decision in April 2018.Now,locals can pay for their bus rides by putting plastic cups or bottles directly on the bus.A two﹣hour bus ride costs 10 plastic cups or 5 bottles.
Indonesia is the second largest ocean plastic polluter, producing up to 2.4 million tons of plastic waste into the oceans every year according to a report.Only in Surabaya nearly 400 tons of plastic waste is produced every day.The head of Surabaya's transportation department(交通部门) said,"With this decision, we hope to raise public awareness about environment, especially people's awareness about plastic waste."
Each city bus can collect up to 550 pounds of plastic bottles and cups every day.The collected bottles are sold to recycling companies and the money earned from it goes toward running the bus companies and providing money for green spaces in the city. This is certainly turning rubbish into a national treasure.
The decision is part of the city's purpose to become plastic waste﹣free by 2020.In order to encourage local people to take buses, the city also added the new Suroboyo buses. The new buses are air﹣conditioned, comfortable and easy for elderly and disabled passengers to get on and off.
The program is well received.People in Surabaya said,"We can reduce waste so it doesn't pile up at home because we can just bring it in and make good use of it. It is a win﹣win situation."

When Dr. Karen McComb came to Amboseli Park, her first task was to learn the names of the one hundred or so elephants most often seen.
Scientists working in the park have learned to study elephants by watching them up close. They have a list of almost one thousand elephants. There are records for all of the elephants born since 1972. Amboseli was a good place for Dr. McComb to study animal communications. Elephants were a great subject because their lifestyle depends on communication.
Dr. McComb and her team had learned a lot about elephant communication, but they kept on thinking about one puzzling (困惑的) watch. Some families were better at distinguishing (区别) calls of friends from those of strangers.
What made some families smarter than others? The scientists searched their records for an explanation. To their surprise, there was only one factor (因素) of importance: The "smartest" families always had the oldest grandmothers. A family, as it did in all other activities, waited for some signal (信号) from the grandmother when they heard a strange contact call. And older, more experienced grandmothers were better at telling whether other elephants were strangers or friends just by their calls.
That was an important discovery. It showed how an elephant family depends on the experience of the grandmother.

After months of study, you have some time to relax. So,why not read a book?Well, some people will say,"Why trouble with books? We have the Internet and other media(媒体)that offer a lot more colorful programs.Books are history!"But don't be fooled. There's still a lot to be said for reading.①One clear reason is that a well﹣chosen is a wonderful collection of and expressions,as long as you have a good dictionary,of course.Believe me,it's far easier to get standard English than from the TV or the Internet.② But an even more important point is that books give you something that modern media cannot. The webpage is always full of pictures and the text is often designed to make it as easy to read as possible.Though"easy"may be welcome, unluckily it's of little use for any long﹣time development of reading skills and the general language level. For that, there's still no substitute(替代品) for a book. But perhaps the best reason is that simply choosing what you read and doing it by yourself means that it's something you do by and for yourself. You can choose what you want to read. It's hard work, but while you are reading, you'll find that what once seemed like a duty is now a pleasure.Reading can bring us pleasure.
78.请在①句空白处各填入一个适当的词.
