暖春三月,贴心开学测 高三英语第八套

A
In the mid-1950s, I was a somewhat bored early-adolescent male student who believed that doing any more than necessary was wasted effort. One day, this approach threw me into embarrassment
In Mrs. Totten’s eighth-grade math class at Central Avenue School in Anderson, Indiana, we were learning to add and subtract decimals (小数).
Our teacher typically assigned daily homework, which would be recited in class the following day. On most days, our grades were based on our oral answer to homework questions.
Mrs. Totten usually walked up and down the rows of desks requesting answers from student after student in the order the questions had appeared on our homework sheets. She would start either at the front or the back of the classroom and work toward the other end.
Since I was seated near the middle of about 35 students, it was easy to figure out which questions I might have to answer. This particular time, I had completed my usual two or three problems according to my calculations.
What I failed to expect was that several students were absent, which threw off my estimate. As Mrs. Totten made her way from the beginning of the class,I desperately tried to determine which math problem I would get. I tried to work it out before she got to me, but I had brain freeze and couldn’t function.
When Mrs. Totten reached my desk, she asked what answer I’d got for problem No. 14. “I…I didn’t get anything,”  I answered, and my face felt warm.
“Correct,” she said.
It turned out that the correct answer was zero.
What did I learn that day? First, always do all your homework. Second, in real life it isn’t always what you say but how you say it that matters. Third,I would never make it as a mathematician.
If I could choose one school day that taught me the most, it would be that one.

London’s newest skyscraper (摩天大楼)is called the Shard and it cost about 430 million pounds to build. At a height of almost 310 metres, it is the tallest building in Europe. The Shard has completely changed the appearance of London. However, not everyone thinks that it is a change for the better.
The Shard was designed by the famous Italian architect Renzo Piano. When he began designing the Shard for London, Piano wanted a very tall building that looked like a spire (尖顶)• He wanted the glass surfaces to reflect the sky and the city. The sides of the building aren’t regular. So the building has an unusual shape. It looks like a very thin, sharp piece of broken glass. And that is how the building got the name: the Shard. Piano says that the spire shape of the Shard is part of a great London tradition. The shape reminds him of the spires of the churches of London or the tall masts (桅杆)of the ships that were once on the river Thames.
The Shard has 87 floors. At the top, there is an observatory. At the moment the building is empty, but eventually there will be a five-star hotel. There will also be top quality restaurants, apartments and offices.
Before building work began, a lot of people didn’t want the Shard though the plans were approved. Now they are still unhappy about the Shard. Some critics say that such a tall skyscraper might be good in a city like New York, but not in London. They say that the best thing about the Shard is its spire shape. But that is the only thing. There is no decoration, only flat surfaces. The Egyptians did that 4,500 years ago. They also think the Shard is too big for London. It destroys the beauty of the city.
Other critics don’t like what the Shard seems to represent. They say that the Shard shows how London is becoming more unequal. Only very rich people can afford to buy the expensive private apartments and stay in the hotel. But the people who live near the Shard are among the poorest in London. So the Shard seems a symbol of the division in society between the very rich and the poor.
The Shard now dominates the London skyline. It is not certain, however, that ordinary London citizens will ever accept it as a valuable addition to the city.
London’s newest skyscraper is called the Shard because of ._____

A.its cost
B.its size
C.its shape
D.its height

When he designed the Shard, Piano wanted it to ._____

A.change London’s skyline
B.inherit London’s tradition
C.imitate the Egyptian style
D.attract potential visitors

The critics who refer to social division think the Shard_______ .

A.is only preferred by the rich
B.is intended for wealthy people
C.is far away from the poor area
D.is popular only with Londoners

Which would be the best title for the passage?

A.The Shard: Cheers and Claps
B.The Shard: Work of a Great Architect
C.The Shard: New Symbol of London?
D.The Shard: A Change for the Better?

Pilling a cat can be a 'terrible” experience. Cats don’t want something pushed down their throats, and they’ll fight with all their strength to prevent it. In fact, it’s amazing how powerful their small bodies can be.
The easiest way of pilling a cat is to press the pill into powder. Then mix the powder with a small amount of wet food. If your cat usually eats dry food, she will probably view the wet food as a treat and eat it up.
If your cat won’t eat the wet food that contains the pill or if she is too ill to eat, you can get a “pill gun”. There are some basic instructions. Getting your cat’s mouth to open is going to be the most difficult part. First, be sure the pill is in a handy place. Then you can put your cat on a bookshelf with her bottom in a corner or you can put her on your lap firmly tied. Have your cat facing to the right if you’re right-handed. With your left hand, hold your cat at the cheekbones, putting your palm (手掌) at the top of her head. Keeping your finger off the trigger (扳机), with your right hand, insert the pill gun until the pill is positioned over the tongue and open throat. Be sure to give your cat a treat directly after giving the pill.
If you don’t feel comfortable using a pill gun, you can try giving the pill by hand. Push your cat’s head backwards just far enough so that her nose is pointing towards the ceiling. At this point, most cats will slightly open their mouths. With the little finger or ring finger of the hand holding the pill, open the bottom jaw a little more. You may need to hold her top jaw with your other hand while doing this. Aim straight and lightly throw the pill or drop it. Most cats will then swallow the pill.
Pilling a cat can be a terrible experience because cats ______.

A.are amazingly powerful and dangerous
B.may fight with all their strength against pills
C.refuse something pressed down their throats
D.are difficult to treat once they’ve got ill

Which of the following statements is true according to the second paragraph?

A.Wet food with medicine is usually a treat to cats.
B.Cats used to dry food must reject wet food.
C.The easiest pilling is to press the pill into powder.
D.Cats are most likely interested in something new.

Using a “pill gun”, you had better hold your cat ______ if you’re left-handed.

A.facing to the right
B.with your right hand
C.at the head
D.on your lap firmly

A cat probably opens its mouth naturally when ______.

A.its nose is straight upwards
B.it is touched by fingers
C.its head is turning around
D.it is served with its favorite pills

Legends about the development of coffee are varied and interesting, involving chance occurrences, political tricks, and the pursuit of wealth and power.
According to one story, a sheepherder named Kaldi, as he tended his sheep, noticed the effect of coffee beans. He noticed that the sheep became excited after eating the red “cherries" from a certain plant when they changed pastures (牧场). He tried it himself, and was soon as overactive as his sheep. Another story relates that a monk happened to discover that this fruit from the shiny green plant could help him stay awake.
Another legend gives us the name for coffee, “mocha”. Omar, an Arabian was thrown to the desert with his followers to die of starvation. In desperation, Omar had his friends boil and eat the fruit from an unknown plant. Not only did the soup save the group, but the residents of the nearest town, Mocha, took their survival as a religious sign. The plant and its beverage (饮料) were named Mocha to honor this event.
Coffee was introduced much later to countries beyond Arabia, whose inhabitants believed it to be a tasty thing and guarded its secret as if they were top secret military plans. The government forbade transportation of the plant out of the Moslem nations. The actual spread of coffee was started illegally. One Arab named Baba Budan smuggled (走私) beans to some mountains near Mysore, India, and started a farm there. Early in this century, some of those original plants were found still growing fruitfully in the region.
Coffee today is grown and enjoyed worldwide, and is one of the few crops that small farmers in third-world countries can profitably export.
What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?

A.A sheepherder used coffee beans to keep sheep excited.
B.Coffee was a special kind of red cherry from a certain plant.
C.A sheepherder and a monk accidently discovered coffee’s effect.
D.Sheep ate a lot of coffee beans while they changed pastures.

I always reflect on what happened in my life. I think this is important—to appreciate our wins, losses, new passions, insights, etc.             Here are some tips for you on reflection.
1. Focus on the process and not the outcome.
This thought was beautifully summed up by Srikumar Rao. He explains how we fail because we focus our energies on the outcome rather than the- process itself. When a child learns to walk, she never focuses on the outcome but on the process.
2. Failure is a lead not a stop sign.
When you hit a wall and things don’t turn up the way they are intended, no one is saying to you, “This is where you stop because you failed”. If you do, you are reading the wrong information. Failure tells us, “             Try another method.”
3. Happiness is not the destination but the journey.
We think that happiness is a result that comes after having acquired or achieved something we don’t have. This is not quite right.            It’s about stepping back and enjoying the ride rather than expecting it at your destination point.
4. Wisdom comes from the balance between your knowledge and your heart.
Let your heart talk more; it’s wiser than you think. You can be as knowledgeable and clever as one can be.           Wisdom is really having reached a stage where you balance all your knowledge with your heart.
5. Gratitude is the energy-drink of the soul.
Say thank you to the universe every morning. Appreciation can lift your soul from anxiety which weighs you down. Try it out.             It will help you appreciate life with more depth and perspective.

A.Failure is the mother of success.
B.Happiness is when we accept and enjoy everything as it is.
C.This method and the intended result do not match.
D.Be thankful to at least one thing in your day.

E. Not reflecting on our lives and experiences is a wasted chance for growth.
F. Happiness means achieving your goals and getting what you want.
G. But if your mind doesn’t go with your heart, you are losing energy in internal conflicts.
