If you are having trouble falling asleep, you are in good company. About 65% of Americans said they have sleeping problems a few nights each week, according to a recent study by the National Sleep Foundation. Sleeping too little can lead to a higher risk of becoming fat and getting depressed(沮丧的). But before you go to a doctor for advice, it is worth examining your sleeping habits one more time. Some of your favorite evening habits may have something to do with the sleeping problems.
1. Setting a Bright Alarm Clock.
The light of your bright alarm clock can prevent you from falling asleep. You can make your room as dark as possible. Cover the bright numbers with a book or consider buying a small travel clock. Your cellphone alarm may also do the trick.
2. Counting Sheep
When you just can't fall asleep, it's useless to stay in bed to count sheep. If you've been trying to fall asleep for more than 30 minutes, the National Sleep Foundation suggests you get up to do some reading or watch TV for a while. Such activities will make you sleepy. Before you know it, you'll be going back to bed really tired.
3. Exercising Late at Night
Daytime workouts(锻炼) will keep you full of energy for hours. That's why you don't want to exercise within three hours of hitting the sack. Fierce(剧烈的)physical activity raise your body temperature and pumps your energy level-both are bad for a good night's sleep.

Stamp collecting is easy when you do it as a hobby. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on it. Sometimes stamps can be got from many sources(来源) for free.
Getting Started
If you have no stamps at all, you might want to buy a packet of 500 or 1,000 different worldwide stamps from a hobby shop or stamp dealer to get stared. One good choice is eBay. Try entering phrases like “worldwide stamps” in the searching box. However, even if you want to specialize in collecting stamps, my advice is not to spend much money on stamps in the beginning. Start off collecting stamps from many source for free until you have collected enough stamps and had enough experience.
Sorting Stamps
Assume (假设) you have some stamps and they are in paper. Before you take them from the paper, you should sort the stamps for example, by country. This is because dealing with stamps is much easier when they are on paper. When you take them off the paper, they become easy to bend, crease and tear easily.
Trimming (修剪) Stamps
Never try to take a stamp off its paper backing by pulling at it, even if it appears to be loose enough to do so. First, trim the paper around the stamp with a pair of sharp scissors making sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps. I suggest that you’d better leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp when you trim the paper before you are good at doing it.
This passage is written for people who .
A.have no money to collect stamps |
B.want to sell their stamps |
C.want to collect stamps |
D.don’t know how to sort stamps |
The writer didn’t mention collecting stamps from a .
A.hobby shop | B.shopping website | C.post office | D.stamp dealer |
According to the writer, at the very beginning, stamp-collecting beginners shouldn’t .
A.collect common stamps |
B.borrow some stamps from their friends |
C.act as an inexperienced collector |
D.spend a lot of money in buying stamps |
What does the writer suggest not do when trimming stamps?
A.Pulling at them to take them off the paper backing when they look loose. |
B.Trim the paper around the stamps with a pair of sharp scissors. |
C.Leave a quarter inch safety area from the edge of the stamp. |
D.Make sure not to cut off the edge of the stamps. |

Mr. Templat was a teacher that I will never forget. I truly believe the teen years were the hardest time of my life. At that time, as a girl, I hated it when my parents asked me directly about my problems, making me more comfortable. I also remember many times when Mr. Templat would take me aside and talk to me. He had a special way of drawing out what the problem was. Every time he talked with me, I felt better.
He had a way of making his classes enjoyable. We always got the highest marks in math in our grade with his teaching. If there was a big world ball game on the radio, we would drop everything and he would put the name on so we could all enjoy it. That’s just the way he is.
Teens often hear things on TV or from adults about world problems that can frighten them. Now it is terrorism(恐怖主义). Back in my teen years, it was the cold war. It worried me so much that I thought each day would be my last. Mr. Templat knew how much it troubled his students. He opened the subject up to discussion. He gave us a way to express our greatest fears and helped us understand war and politics. “One can feel afraid however brave he is.” We were told.
When I think back to those special days, I appreciate that he helped me through such a difficult time in my life.

Last year,I lived in Chile(智利) for half a year last year. I lived with a Chilean family and had to do the same things as any Chilean teenager. I had good days and bad days I didn't understand.
Chuquicamata, my host community, is a mining camp. When I arrived there,I was scared. It was so different from what I was used to. There were lots of dogs on the streets, and there was no downtown(商业区),few good streets, and little to do for fun. Rain was not seen very often, earthquakes and windstorms happened quite often.
I had studied Spanish for two and a half years and was always one of the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile,I was not able to communicate and I needed a person to whom I could explain my shock. But I couldn't speak the thoughts in my head and there were so many. Most exchange students experience this like me.And I had to deal with all the difficulties on my own.
However, as time passé, everything changed. I began to forget words in English and started to dream in Spanish and love Chilean food. I got used to not buying expensive things for fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with people. I took math, physics, chemistry, biology, Spanish, art, and philosophy in school.
What I lost was nothing compared to what I acquired. I learned how to accept and to succeed in another culture. I now have a deeper understanding of both myself and others.

How to say hello in Japanese depends on when you say it. This is very much like different greetings used in English at different times of the day or night. In Japanese culture, it also depends on whether you are on the phone or meeting somebody or whether you are close to the person you are greeting. We don’t get formal with our close friends. We seldom greet them with “Good morning” or “Good evening”. A “Hi” is enough.
Although the most popular and most well-known translation for “Hello” is still “Konniqiwa”, it is not exactly how to say hello in Japanese. Perhaps it is not the most suitable word for it. Actually, the correct greeting in English for “Konniqiwa” is “Good day” or “Good noon”, and I am sure you wouldn’t like to greet people with a “Good day” at any time, and neither do Japanese like saying “Konniqiwa” when they want to say “Hello”.
So what to do? Let’s do it in the way the Japanese do. Use “Ohaiyo Gozaimasu” for “Good morning”, “Konniqiwa” when it’s noon and “Konbanwa”to greet somebody in the afternoon. Things differ when you are on the phone. Just say “Moshi, Moshi”, which is actually similar to saying “Hello” over the phone, because one hardly ever uses “Good morning” or “Good afternoon” or “Good evening” right after picking up the phone. It is invariably the sweet old “Hello”.
Next time, I’ll tell something about my life in Japan.

“Emily was so excited about helping out with the festival tree last year that I decided to surprise her by giving away a tree of my own,”she says.
Because of being in hospital, Emily won’t be able to see the tree.”But I’m taking pictures to surprise her,”says Suzy.”I want her to know that she’ll always be an angel to me.”
Suzy’s tree has given Emily’s family hope for a miracle(奇迹).”It has given Emily hope that she has a chance to be a normal girl and do all the things other girls do,”says Laurie Austin.

On a cold evening of April our ship was sailing for Ireland. Suddenly a violent storm rose and overturned our ship. Fortunately I held a board and was washed up on an island.
It was completely dark. On reaching the island,I found a smooth place to lie down. Quite tired I slept for a long time. I woke up with a start when I was dazzled (使目眩) by glaring sunlight. How I felt hungry and thirsty! The island with its beautiful landscape at dawn appeared before my eyes.
I began to explore the island. It was an uninhabited island surrounded by trees. Yellow fruits on the trees made me feel hungry. I tasted one. How sweet and delicious it was!I ate greedily a lot then I lay down comfortably on the soft grass. Around me were fragrance (芳香) and singing of birds. There, far away, on the right, a waterfall was falling down the mountainside. I rushed toward it. In the afternoon when I was wandering around the island, I happened to find out a cave hidden behind the thick forest. It was convenient for me to turn it into a place for sleeping for the night.
Day in day out, nearly two weeks passed by. My food was mere fruit and some fish caught from the stream. Sometimes I tried to hunt some wild animals but in vain. Had I been equipped with necessary things,I would have enjoyed remaining here for food.

Many English students did not realize that phrases such as “get off of” and “she was stood” were grammatically incorrect. It’s feared that the use of social networking websites and mobile phone text messaging is damaging children’s literacy(读写) skills.
Ministers have also complained that many young people spend too much time playing video games and watching TV instead of reading books. In the lastest study,Cambridge Assessment, one of the country’s biggest examination organizations, surveyed more than 2,000teenagers in 26 English secondary schools.
They were presented with various phrases and asked to mark out those with non-standard English. Only 41 percent realized that an adjective had been used in place of an adverb in the phrase “come quick”.
Fewer than six-in-ten pupils correctly identified “get off of” and “she was stood” as ungrammatical. Around a quarter of students failed to spot errors in the phrases “ it wasn’t me who done it” , “ couldn’t hardly move”, “Tom had gotten cold” and “three mile”. At least a fifth failed to recognize that “more easier” was incorrect. And most one-in-ten students failed to spot the use of a double negative in the phrase “I didn’t break no vase”
Ian McNeilly, from the National Association for the Teaching of English, told the Times Educational Supplement, “For a lot of people—not just young people—their daily use of English is in new media, where non-standerd grammatical constuctions are more acceptable. That’s unavoidably going to lead to an increased lack of awareness of more standard constructions.”
Dr Beth Black, author of the latest report, said,”It is possible that these less well-recognized nonstandard English forms will find their way into standard English, especially given the view that teenagers are linguistic innovators(语言创新者) who bring about change in standard dialect”.

B.know the proper place of an adjective |
C.know the use of the adverb |

According to Ian McNeilly, which of the following caused the spread of non-standard grammer?
A.Poeple use English in new media |
B.People spend little time reading books |
C.People didn’t learning grammar well at school |
D.Poeple are too careless in their writing |
From the last paragraph, we can infer that___.
A.standard English will probably be destroyed by teenagers |
B.teenagers are likely to become experts in English language |
C.non-standard English forms will probably be widely accepted |
D.people will probably not use the standard English grammar |
Among growing concerns about rising food prices and global warming, many Americans are taking a closer look at what they do and don’t eat.
Research in the US estimates that at least 14 percent of purchased food ends up in the garbage. Some way view this as a call to return to the”clean your plate” atiitude, which was popularized in the mid-twentieth century, but this would be unwise. With a rising overweight population and a growing national health crisis, it’s time for a new approach.Instead,we should view these figures as motivation to reduce waste, cut grocery costs and maintain our health by shopping and eating smarter.
Food waste reportedly makes up about 12 percent of waste material.Aside from the costly operation budgets of the equipment, the environment is paying the real price. As organic material(like vegetables, fruits and grains)decompose in the garbage, they release the greenhouse gas methane(甲烷)into the environment.
In fact, garbage is the largest source of methane emissions(散发)in the US.While composting plant food, which does not produce methane,is one solution, strategies for wasting less food shoule also be explored.
According to a survey in the UK,one major source of food waste is “over shopping”.Buying more food than we need is easy to do when we shop without a list or when “buy one,get one free”offers tempt us to put food that will often go to waste into our shopping baskets.
The solution: shop smarter.Check your refrigerator to see what needs to be used or frozen before it becomes bad.Check your calendar to see if there are meals that you know you will be eating away from home.
Before you go to the store, decide how many days worth of food you need. Then ,take a few minutes to prepare a shopping list.Don’t make things different—no need to decide what will be served each day—just plan enough breakfast, lunch and dinner meals to last until your next grocery run.

Babies as young as 5months can distinguish a happy tune, such as Ode to Joy, from Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, from sad tunes.
Researchers showed an emotionally-neutral(中立的)face to the babies while sad music played. When the babies looked away from the face, the music stopped Ode to Joy played, the babies stared at the face three to four seconds longer, suggesting they were interested in the change.
By nine months old, babies can do the opposite.
The finding is another example of how babies make sense of the world long before they can talk, said Brigham Young University psychology professor Ross Flom.
“One of the first things babies understand communicatively is emotion,so for them the melody(旋律)is the message,”Flom said. “Our study showed that by nine months, babies are classifying songs as happy or sad the same way that adults do”
So what makes a happy song?
BYU music professor Susan Kenney, who was not involved in the study, noted some of the technical difference between the happy and sad songs the babies heard.
“The happy songs were all in major keys with fairly short phrases or motives that repeated,”Kenney said, “The tempo(节拍)and melodic rhythms were faster than any of the sad ones, and the molodies had a general upward direction. The sad songs were in minor keys and all had a slower beat and long melodic rhythms. For a baby to notice those differences is interesting and attractive.”
The phrase “the opposite”in Paragraph 3 refers to “___”.

B.picking out a sad tune from happy ones |
C.looking away from the face three to four sections longer |
D.showing they’re not interested in the change of tunes |

Poor parenting is to blame for a major deterioration(变坏) in the behavior of primary school pupils over the past five years,a study suggests.
Classroom disorder is a big problem for teachers, according to researchers ar Cambridge University. In interview with teachers, Professors Maurice Galton and John Macbeath found that many blamed their pupils’ bad behavior on the inability of parents to control children at home.
Many pupils lacked the social skills required to get on in class, said the researchers. “The teachers describe ‘highly permissive’ parents who admitted to indulging(纵容) their children, often for the sake of peace,” the author added.
Examples included a mother who, after great effort, succeeded in getting her five-year-old son to bed at 1 am instead of 3 am,and a boy of seven who broke his Sony PlayStation in a tantrum(发脾气),and then would not behave for a week until his mother bought him a new one.
Professors Galton and Macbeath were also told of parents who would do anything to shut their children up”just to get some peace”.
The researchers, who visited schools they studied five years ago, added,”There appeared to have been a bad influence on school life from a rapidly changing social scene”
“Motivating certain children, it was claimed, had become more difficult because by the time they came to school many of these children had become expert in dealing with adults.”
According to Galton and Macbeath, the top five difficulties to teaching are poor pupil behavior, lack of time for reflection, large class sizes, too many initatives and an overloaded curriculum. “Children arrive at school knowing too much and not enough.”They said.

Candy corn is one of the simple pleasures of Halloween. Around since the 1880s, these white, yellow and orange striped candies are made with sugar, corn syrup(糖浆)and other ingredients.
Of course, you can enjoy candy corn by the handful. But we came up with 5 fun ways to celebrate and enjoy this seasonal treat.
Fill your sugar bowl with candy corn. Use spoonfuls of the colorful candies to sweeten your coffee, tea or other hot drinks. The sugary candies will dissolve(溶解)in the hot liquid.
Make ice cream sandwiches perfect for Halloween by decorating the creamy edges with candy corn. Purchase ready-made ice cream sandwiches and roll the edges in a plateful of the corn. Or make your own by first spooning your favorite flavor of softened ice cream between two sugar cookies or chocolate cookies. Roll the ice cream side in candy corn. Wrap in plastic wrap or foil and freeze at least 6 hours until firm. Let stand about 10 minutes before eating.
Use them as decoration on the chocolate icing atop a cake, cupcakes or brownies (the colors look great against brown).
Make a seasonal party mix by combining 4 cups cereal(麦片)and 1/3 cup melted butter. Toss(拌)to coat. Add 1 cup raisins, 1 cup candy corn and 1 (12-ounce) jar dry-roasted peanuts. Toss to mix. Store in an airtight(密封的)container.
Make attractive candy corn cookies. Make your favorite sugar cookie recipe, roll it out, cut the dough with about a 1 1/2-inch triangular cookie cutter and bake then cool. Then using a fondant(软糖)rolling pin, roll out yellow fondant on paper until it is 1/8-inch thick. Cut the fondant into 1/2-inch-thick strips and set aside. Repeat with white and orange fondants. Place the strips side by side on the paper and roll until the strips become one piece. Cut out a candy corn shape from the fondant sheet with your triangular cutter. Press light corn syrup on the top of your cookies and place fondant sheets on the cookies. Let dry at least 1 hour.
For how long have people enjoyed the pleasures from candy corn?

Gregory Anderson, a specialist on endangered languages, once said, "Language is in many ways a window to the mind. What these languages contain are all kinds of ways that we organize the world. Languages reflect a different historical contact with other groups. And, for people who have no written history, language can be one of the ways to get the history just by looking carefully at the different parts in the language."
However, over half of the world's seven thousand languages are in danger of disappearing, and every two weeks one language disappears. One of the most endangered languages is called Siletz Dee-ni, a language from the northwestern part of the United States.
It was spoken on the Siletz reservation (居留地), where the tribe lives on a protected area within the state of Oregon. The reservation was created in the 19th century to hold people from 27 different native groups. The groups spoke different languages, so they developed Chinook Jargon. With its increased use as well as the use of English, the number of people speaking their native languages became smaller. Today, only one person on the reservation speaks Siletz Dee-ni.
Bringing back endangered languages is not easy, but it is very important. One example of this is taking place in the American state of Hawaii. Hawaii became a part of the United States in 1898. English became the official language of Hawaii. Slowly, fewer and fewer young natives learned to speak Hawaiian fluently. The language began to disappear.
In 1986, fewer than fifty children in Hawaii could speak their native language. That same year, the language ban (禁令) was removed because of strong disagreements from native groups. The Hawaiian language began to be taught again in schools. Today, about 2,000 children speak Hawaiian. Also, families now speak Hawaiian with their children at home. Anyway, it is up to the children to keep the language alive.
The author wrote the first paragraph to ________.
A.tell us that many languages are disappearing |
B.tell us the importance of language |
C.encourage us to be interested in studying language |
D.tell us the characteristics of language |
The underlined part "Chinook Jargon" in the third paragraph must be ________.
A.a hand sign | B.a language |
C.a language school | D.a language textbook |

A.its culture was completely mixed with the American culture |
B.all Hawaiian people got interested in learning English |
C.Hawaiian was forbidden to be taught in the local schools |
D.Hawaiian people created another language of their own |
From the last paragraph we can infer that _________.
A.Hawaiian will become the official language in Hawaii soon |
B.protecting the Hawaiian language is the biggest concern of the local people |
C.parents play the most important role in protecting the Hawaiian language |
D.more Hawaiian people have realized the value of their own language |
Homework can put you in a bad mood, but that might actually be a good thing.New research suggests that, in some cases, being too happy can hurt your performance on certain kinds of tasks. To test whether it is true, researchers performed two learning experiments with children.
The first experiment included 30 children, aged 10 and 11.Each child was given 20 problems in which a houselike shape was hidden inside a different, larger image. The children had to find the small shape while sitting in a room.Either positive or sad classical music was played in the background.
As a measure of mood, the scientists asked the children to point to ont of five faces, ranging from happy to sad.Children listening to the positive music tended to point to the smiling faces.Children surrounded by sad music pointed instead to the frowns(皱眉).The researchers found that sad children took at least to find the small shapes and also correctly found on average three or four more shapes.
In the second experiment,61 children, aged 6 and 7,faced the same type of problems. They watched one of three scenes. One scene was happy. One was neutral(中立的).One was sad.And just like in the first experiment; kids who felt sad or neutral performed better on the tests. They solved on average two or three more problems.
The researchers think that feeling down causes people more likely to fix their attention on a problem or difficult situation. However, other studies suggest that people who feel happy are better able to fix their attention on details. Some researchers insist that the new studies have flaws. It’s possible that the lively music in the first experiment took children’s attention away from their task of finding shapes.
While scientists continue to work on finding the answers,it will might be worth adapting your tasks for your mood.
What did the researchers want to find out the experiments?
A.What determines success in children’s study |
B.How to train children to keep a happy mood |
C.Whether and how children’s moods affect their performance |
D.Whether too much homework affects children’s moods |
What did the two experiments have in common?
A.Children were divided into happy and sad groups |
B.Children were asked to find hidden shapes |
C.Children in a sad moon were considered much cleverer |
D.Researchers used music to measure children’s moods |
Through the two experiments, researchers think that sadness cause people to___.
A.perform better in some cases |
B.become cleverer than before |
C.pay more attention to details |
D.be more likely to be influenced by music |

For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans. __________ They are always a symbol whether they are worn for work or for fashion today. Strauss' invention continues to be popular not only among Americans but also among people around the world.
Levi Strauss was born in Germany in 1829. __________ He grew up in Kentucky before moving to New York in 1847. Before becoming an American citizen and moving to the West in 1853, Strauss worked in hisbrother's dry goods business. This gave him a chance to produce his famous invention. These pants proved so popular that he quickly ran out of materials to make more.
In 1873, Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets (铆钉). This made the pants last a long time.
