My father was a foreman of a sugar-cane plantation in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. My first job was to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields. I would walk behind an ox, guiding him with a broomstick. For $1 a day, I worked eight hours straight, with no food breaks.
It was very tedious work, but it prepared me for life and taught me many lasting lessons. Because the plantation owners were always watching us, I had to be on time every day and work as hard as I could. I’ve never been late for any job since. I also learned about being respectful and faithful to the people you work for. More importantly, I earned my pay, it never entered my mind to say I was sick just because I didn’t want to work.
I was only six years old, but I was doing a man’s job. Our family needed every dollar we could make because my father never earned more than $18 a week. Our home was a three-room wood shack with a dirty floor and no toilet. Nothing made me prouder than bringing home money to help my mother, father, two brothers and three sisters. This gave me self-esteem(自尊心), one of the most important things a person could have.
When I was seven, I got work at a golf course near our house. My job was to stand down the fairway and spot the balls as they landed, so the golfers could find them. Losing a ball meant you were fired, so I never missed one. Some nights I would lie in bed and dream of making thousands of dollars by playing golf and being able to buy a bicycle.
The more I dreamed, the more I thought. Why not? I made my first golf club out of guava limb (番石榴树枝) and a piece of pipe. Then I hammered an empty tin can into the shape of a ball. And finally I dug two small holes in the ground and hit the ball back and forth. I practiced with the same devotion and intensity. I learned working in the field--- except now I was driving golf balls with club, not oxen with a broomstick.
The writer’s first job was ___________.
A.to stand down the fairway at the golf course |
B.to watch over the sugar-cane plantation |
C.to drive the oxen that ploughed the cane fields |
D.to spot the balls as they landed so the golfers could find them |

Dear Ralf,
I have received your letter from school and am glad to know that you are becoming responsible enough to decide on your career.
You are now in the final year of college and are about to start more independent life in society. You know that a generation divides us, and the conditions of social life were different in my days. However, all I can say as advice is that you must select a career wisely. The first consideration is your interest. You can only succeed and feel happy when you do something you enjoy. Your job must be both gainful and satisfying. Then, you must read up on the latest books on the field you are aiming at. Also, you should get familiar with the men and women in the profession of that field. When mind and heart function together, success is inevitable(必然的).
No career is more or less important than any other career. It takes different people to operate the machine of life. I think your interest may lie in the field of making TV programs. Your great communication skills, your active participation in school plays and the prizes you have won in speech competitions all point in that direction. So a career in Mass Communication and TV film production proves suitable for you. If you succeed and make it in that field, fame and treasure will both follow.
Think a thousand times before making any final decision regarding your career. Anyhow, I want you to be a man of success.
I know that you are mature enough to think for yourself.
With all the best wishes!
Your loving father

Choosing to Study Overseas
Every year, thousands of students choose to study in another country for a semester, the summer, or a year. Studying overseas can be an exciting experience for many people.
Living in another country can help you to learn a language, and about another culture. Overseas study may also look good on your future resume. Many companies today want employees who speak a second language, or have experienced living or working in another country.
Making the right choice
Once you decide to study overseas, you have to make some choices. To choose the right country or school, ask yourself: Where do I want to go and why? How much do I want to pay? Do I want to live with a host family, with roommates, or alone?
Getting ready to go
Get your passport and visa early! Learn about the money. Bring some of it, and a credit card, with you.
Once you are there
After the first few weeks overseas, many students will feel a little homesick. They may miss their family, friends, and familiar ways of doing things. When you feel sad or homesick, try to talk to others, or write about your feelings in a notebook.

It is said that there are about 40,000 different kinds of jobs in the world. “Finding a job ”is not the same as “choosing a job”. Many young people end up in a job which they are not suitable for. Here are a few steps to help you think about jobs which you might enjoy doing after school or university.
First, it is important to realize what kind of person you are, which special qualities make you different from everyone else and what you are interested in .If you like art and enjoy looking at pictures, this is an interest. But if you can draw a horse that looks like a horse instead of a big dog, that is a skill.
Then ask yourself this question: in the following three areas----skills with people, skills with information and skills with things-----which are your best skills?
After examining your skills, the next step is research. To find out as many different kinds of jobs as possible, go to the library and read books, magazines and newspapers.
Finally, trust your own ideas and your own thinking!
A.It is your own life, so find something that you enjoy doing. |
B.Choosing the right one itself is a difficult job. |
C.We must know what our ideal jobs are. |
D.There is a difference between an interest and a skill |
E. Ask your friends about the work they do.
F. “Chance” may play a more important part than “decision”.
G. Your parents may also give you some useful advice.
根据短文内容,从下框的A—F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。选项中有一项为多余选项。
A. Be ready for the questions to be asked.
B. Take copies of your resume to the interview.
C. Think about your education and the skills you have learned.
D. Good preparation before the interview.
E. Come to the interview with personal information.
F. Try to get to know more about the company.
Preparation is a big part of the interview process. You will, or you should, spend more time getting ready for the interview than you will at the interview itself. This preparation includes getting to know more about the company and the position you are applying for, and preparing yourself to explain how your valuable qualities make you the best person for the position. And of course, there is the time it takes to make yourself presentable. Job interview can be a stressful situation for many people. The best way to help relieve this stress is to hold a positive attitude and be well prepared. Consider the following tips as you prepare for your interview.
Think of the answers you want to give. Although you will never completely know in advance every question they will ask you, there are questions that get asked in almost every interview. Learn what they are and try to predict what the others might be. Interview questions are usually sourced from the job posting. If they are looking for a particular skill set, make sure you can explain how you will meet that expectation.
Do your best to get information about the company before the interview. Do some research, such as using their website, scanning through annual reports if they publish one, being familiar with the project they are now working on. This will help you to present your answers in the context of what their core business is about.
Most job postings have a list of core duties or responsibilities as well as what qualifications are required. Study these well and prepare your answers accordingly. Think about what education and training you have had and what work experiences you have done that makes you the ideal person for the position. Be thorough in your self-assessment, think broadly about all you have learned and experienced. You may surprise yourself with what skills you have acquired previously.
In most cases, the interviewer will have your resume already, but it never hurts to have some back-up copies just in case. And be sure they are the most current and relevant resume for the position.

Mr. Johnson is a hardworking teacher. Every day, he spends too much time with his work. With little sleep and hardly any break, so he works from morning till night. Hard work have made him very ill. “He has ruined his healthy. We are worried about him. ”That is which other teachers say. Yesterday afternoon, I paid visit to Mr. Johnson. I was eager to see him, but outside her room I stopped. I had to calm myself down. Quietly I step into the room. I saw him lying in bed, looking at some of the picture we had taken together. I understood that he missed us just as many as we missed him.
