We lived in a quiet neighborhood. One evening I heard a loudcrash. Earlier my wife had asked me to the store for soft drinks. Myteenage daughter Holly practiced her driving, so I sent her to thestore in my truck.
At dinner my son talked about how much he liked my truck. Ienjoyed having it, but I said : “My heart is not set on that truck. Ilike it but it is just metal and won't last forever. Never set your hearton anything that won't last. "
After hearing the loud noise, the whole family ran outside. Myson shouted, ‘ Holly crashed your truck. ’
The accident had occurred in my own driveway. Holly hadcrashed my truck into our other vehicle, the family van. In her inexperience, she had confused the brake and the gas pedal. More than three billion people are at risk from indoor air pollution because of the heating or cooking fuels they use. Most live inAfrica, India and China. They use wood, crop waste, animal waste orcoal. These solid fuels may be the least costly fuels available. Butthey are also a major cause of health problems and death.
The Aprovecho Research Center has been designing cookingstoves for the developing world. People having less money use woodor biomass for cooking; the richer people use oil and gas. It's estimated that wood is running out more quickly than oil and gas.
The group has made stoves using mud, bricks, sheet metal, clay, ceramics and old oil drums. Most of the stoves look like large, deep cooking pots. They have an opening at the bottom for the fireand a place on top to put a pot.
In the late 1970s, Aprovecho produced a popular stove calledthe Lorena. The Lorena was good at reducing smoke and warminghomes. But new tests years later found that it was not efficient. Theused twice as much wood as an open fire, and took muchlonger to heat food. Since then, they have experimented with count-less other designs.
Their goal is to make an inexpensive stove—let's say fivedollars— that makes little smoke, and it's safe for health and reducesglobal warming and deforestation(采伐森林).
Aprovecho has now partnered with a stove manufacturer inChina. The company is making Aprovecho's first mass producedstoves. They are said to use 40% - 50% less wood than an openfire, and produce 50% -70% less smoke. A company called Stove-Tec is selling them through its Web site for less than ten dollars. 阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。
My daughter did an experiment for me two summers ago. Sheapplied to job openings she'd found on a couple of big online jobboards. She mailed the applications and waited. And waited. Aftersending out 100 resumes (履历表),specially addressed to eachorganization's human resources ( HR ) manager, fewer than five HRdepartments took the time to reply, or acknowledged receipt.
What happened?
Maybe in the thirty seconds or so of attention that her resumereceived, each HR person made a snap decision. It seemed that 95of them were unimpressed.
Or, maybe, out of the 300 other resumes HR had received thatmorning, they had already scheduled a requisite (必要的)numberof interviews. Or, maybe HR simply forwarded her resume to thehiring manager who was supposed to call her for an interview.
Or, maybe they thought her resume was fairly generic (—般的)and they didn't have time to figure out if she might be a goodfit, with the necessary skills, the attitude, and the desire to dothe job.
Most likely, the real reason why she didn't get an interview wasthe last one. HR didn't have time to figure out how she would workin their company.
This happens all the time. I think most job seekers make theserious mistake of thinking that all they need to do is tell the HRdepartment what they did in the past.
That might be OK for some hiring managers, but most want toknow the answer to one question : How can this applicant help usright now? If your resume does not answer that question, or sufficiently tell a story about how you may be able to help, you won'thave a shot at the job in this market.
Before you can answer that question, however, you need to dosome research on the company. Find out everything you can aboutthe company, including the departments, the people, the products, markets, and the plans for the future.
Information is power, and it is available quite easily. Don't expect HR to figure out how you might fit into their organization. You __________ instead. This is the surest way to get the interview.
What's the main idea of this passage? (within 20 words)
