A good dictionary is an important tool. It will tell you not only what a word means but also how it is used. A dictionary needs to be printed again about every ten years. Languages develop and a good dictionary must show these new changes.
A new English dictionary will only tell you most people use the language today. It will not tell you what is right wrong. It may tell you the right time to use a word. If only________ people use a word, a dictionary will tell you this or not list it.
Every dictionary will tell you many interesting facts. If you type a word and the word is too long, look it up in your dictionary. All dictionaries show you to break a word. And they also show you how a word .
Every dictionary, of course, tells you what a word means. But some words, like “get” or “take”, may have lots of meanings. In some dictionaries, the main meanings are often listed first. In ________ , the newest meanings are listed last. So before you use your dictionary, you should always ________ the front part. This part explains how to use it.
Some dictionaries also show you where a word comes from. Do you know that the word “brand” (标记) comes from an old word? This old word means “to burn”. This is because hundreds of years ago people burned their names on tables or boats to show who ________ them. They also burned their own names on their farm animals ________ they would not be stolen.
Your dictionary also has a lot of other interesting facts in it. After you have learned to use a dictionary, it can become your best useful book.

Life is like four seasons. Now I am very old, but when I was young, it was the spring of my life. I was born, I played a lot, and then I started school. I learnt many new things. Like a flower, I grew bigger every day. There were happy days and sorrowful days: some days the sun shone, and some days it didn’t.
In my twenties, I had a good job. I was strong and happy. Then I married and had a child. In those days, I didn’t have much time to think. Every day I was busy and worked very hard. And so, I started to get some white hair. The summer of my life passed quickly.
Then the days got shorter. Leaves fell from the trees. My child was a university student, and then an engineer. My home was much quieter. I started walking more slowly. One day I stopped walking. I had more time. I understood this was my autumn, a beautiful time when the trees change color and give us delicious fruits.
But the days kept getting shorter and colder. Winter has come. I am getting older and older. I know I do not have many days left, but I will enjoy them to the end and try to make my winter a warm one.

This is a young girl’s homework for the evening. English: Read three chapters and write a report. Math: Complete 30 problems. Science: Do a worksheet, front and back. French: Study new words for tomorrow’s test. It’s going to be a long night.
This happens to students in America. Do students in the United States receive too much homework? According to the National Education Association, a student should be assigned (布置) no more than 10 minutes per grade level per night. For example, a first grader should only have 10 minutes of homework, a second grader, 20 minutes, and so on.
It’s no good giving students too much homework. According to research, kids are developing more illness at school, such as stomachaches, headaches and sleep problems than before.
Everybody knows that teachers are the ones who assign homework, but they are not the only ones to blame (受责备). “Many teachers are under greater pressure (压力) than ever before,” says Kylene Beers, President of the National Council for teachers of English, “Some of it comes from parents, some from the wish for high scores on tests.” Teachers who are under pressure feel the need to assign more homework.
Some people have different ideas, saying that homework prepares kids for doing better in high school, better in college, and getting better job in the future. But too much homework is sapping students’ strength, curiosity(削弱学生的个性和好奇心), and most importantly, their love of learning, is that really what teachers and parents want?
