As the sun rose, a dewdrop (露珠) woke up. There it sat on a leaf, catching the sunlight. Proud of its simple beauty, it was very happy. Around it were other dewdrops, some on the same leaf and some on other leaves. The dewdrop was sure that it was the best, the most special dewdrop of them all.
Ah, it was good to be a dewdrop.
The wind blew and the plant began to shake, tipping (使倾斜) the leaf. The dewdrop became frightened as it started to move towards the edge of the leaf. Why was this happening? Things were comfortable. Things were safe. Why did they have to change? Why? Why?
The dewdrop reached the edge of the leaf. It was sure that this was the end. The day had only just begun and the end had come so quickly. It seemed so unfair. It seemed so meaningless. It tried hard to do whatever it could to stay on the leaf, but it was no use.
Finally, it fell. Below there was a mirror. A reflection(反射)of the dewdrop seemed to be coming up to meet it. Closer and closer they came together until finally... the little dewdrop became a part of the great pond (池塘). Now the dewdrop was no more, but it was not destroyed.
It had become one with the whole.
According to Paragraph 1, we know that the dewdrop _____.

A.didn’t get on well with other dewdrops B.thought its beauty was too simple
C.regarded itself as the best dewdrop D.couldn’t get any sunlight

The dewdrop became _____ as it started to move towards the edge of the leaf.

A.afraid B.happy C.proud D.comfortable

Which of the following is TRUE according to the story?

A.There was only one dewdrop on the leaf.
B.The dewdrop did nothing before falling.
C.The mirror in the story refers to(指) the pond.
D.The dewdrop was actually destroyed.

The story mainly tells us that _____.

A.we should work together against difficulties
B.people should not be too proud of themselves
C.one should work hard for his/her goals
D.it’s good to become one with the whole

When I was ten, my mother worked all day so I had to take care of my younger brother. At that time my little brother was about four years old and he missed mum all the time.
One day, after I had given him his dinner, he started crying for mum. He was so young and really needed mum. So I dressed him, put on his shoes, carried him on my back and walked out. Soon he fell asleep. About half an hour later, I found that he had lost a shoe while sleeping. I took him off my back and put him down. I knew we needed to find that shoe, for our mother couldn’t afford new shoes. We had to go back to find it, so I told my brother to wait right there. A man heard it and stopped me just before I walked off. He asked me, “You are leaving your brother here to find the shoe? What would you do if he is not here when you return?” I did not know how to answer that question. He continued, “It’s OK if you can’t find the shoe, but it is not OK to lose your brother.” Then he sent us to mum’s workplace by taxi.
My whole life I have depended on (依靠) the kindness of many strangers, I feel regretful that I cannot find them and say thank you. I do not even remember what the man’s face looked like, but he taught me a lesson—people are more important than things.
Why did the younger brother cry for his mother?

A.Because he was hungry. B.Because he missed his mother.
C.Because he wanted to sleep. D.Because he wanted to play outside.

What does the underlined word “regretful” in the last paragraph mean?

A.Sorry B.Happy C.Excited D.Angry

What did the man mean by saying “It’s OK if you can’t find the shoe, but it is not OK to lose your brother.”?

A.People are more important than things.
B.Things are more important than people.
C.Both the shoe and your brother are important.
D.The shoe is more important than your brother.

According to the passage, which word can best describe the man?

A.Rude. B.Funny. C.Silly. D.Kind.

What makes a successful speech? First, you should have a good speech script (稿子) so that your ideas and language can attract people's attention. And some skills are necessary, too.
Here are some suggestions on giving great speeches:
◆Beat nerves
Try to get relaxed when making a speech. Practice your opening sentence three or more times. This will help make a sure start and a successful speech. When you stand on the stage, think of the audience as your family members and friends.
◆Keep it natural
Natural body languages will help your speech: smile, stand straight and look at the audience. Do not drop your head or play with a pen. Also, dressing yourself nicely will help the audience feel respected.
◆Pace and pause (节奏和停顿)
Pace and pause add color to your speech. Speak fast enough to keep people excited and slowly enough for people to fully understand you. After an important point, pause for a moment. It'll change the atmosphere (气氛)in the audience.
