Paul Nicklen waited patiently on a sheet of ice in the Arctic. He was there to take pictures for National Geographic. Finally, he saw something big and white. It was a polar bear, swimming towards him in the icy water.
Paul lay down-on the ice to get a better photo, but the polar bear jumped out of the water and tried to attack him! Luckily for Paul, the ice cracked or broke and the bear fell back into the water The polar bear wasn’t so lucky. It couldn’t get a meal and had to swim farther away to find food.
To understand the polar bear’s problem, you need to know two things about the Arctic. First, the Arctic is mostly ocean. Second , ice cover a lot of the Arctic Ocean. In winter, the ice form a thick, white sheet, but in summer, the ice becomes thinner and break into pieces. Sea ice is the key to survival for Arctic animals. However, because of global warming, Arctic temperatures are rising and polar ice is melting.
Polar bears need ice to hunt seals, their favourite meal. They stand on the ice wait for the seal to come up for air. As Arctic ice melts, polar bears have to swim farther to find ice floes, or large pieces of floating ice. Sometimes, bears have to swim more than 200 km to find an ice floe. Some bears cannot swim that far and sadly they drown.
On his last trip, Paul Nicklen saw three dead bodies of polar bears. Before global warming threatened Arctic ice, a dead bear was a rare sight, Paul is sad to see the dead bodies, wildlife experts thinks global warming will have a terrible effect on polar bears. In the future, polar ice will continue to shrink and endanger the bear. Some scientists believe 65 percent of the world’s polar bears will disappear by 2050. in other word, polar bears are in great danger.

Hi, Jake,
How's it going? Sorry I haven't been in touch for a while, but I couldn't use my computer for a few days. You'll never guess what happened to me!
A couple of weeks ago, I decided to take up yoga. Yoga is combination of physical and breathing exercises. _ I've been feeling a bit stressed about my school work recently and I thought yoga might help.
My dad couldn't give me a lift to the first lesson, so I decided to go to the gym by bike. The lesson was great and I felt really relaxed afterwards. The next day , I woke up with a bad cold. I couldn't stop coughing and sneezing. I couldn't go to school because I also had a high temperature. We were having a maths test that day so it was great that I could stay at home. I didn't really enjoy my day off though. I felt awful and stayed in bed. Mum brought me cups of hot tea for my sore throat(and you know how much I hate tea I have to keep taking these for a while so I can get stronger.
That afternoon Robbie came to visit me .He said he’d got something to cheer me up and pretended it was the math test that I missed."Mr Banks says do it at home instead ,”he said , but I knew he was joking. The next day, I was a bit pale and didn't have much energy, but I was feeling better. The day after that, I was able to go back to school.
Can you believe my luck?
Anyway, you're OK. Write and let me know what you've been up to ! Bye for now !
Kate

Rapping, which speaking to the rhythm of the music,is an important part of this music. Young people rap to express how they feel about their lives and problems.
Would you like to rap in class? Well actually, hip hop music is being played in more than 10,000 schools in the USA. Why? There is a new school programme called "Flocabulary" where teachers use text books and hip hop CDs to help teach a variety of school subjects. The lyrics of the songs include information on a subject students are studying, which makes learning easy and fun Students and teachers are amazed at the positive effects it has had on exam marks. This is one teacher said: "I've used hip hop songs in class, and I've never seen students have such interests in history! It's unbelievable how students remember what I teach it even encourages us towrite our own songs.
Blake Harrison, a high school student, first thought of the idea of Flocabulary. The word "Flocabulary" comes from the words "flow" and "vocabulary". "Flow" is a rap word for "style" or the way a rapper says the words of a song. How did he get the idea'? Well he realized he could remember the lyrics of a hip hop song very easily. So, why not make lessons into songs'? Today together with Alex Rappaport, a composer, Blake produces hip hop songs for maths .science and literature, which are now being used in schools with great success.

Charles Darwin was a scientist who changed our understanding of the natural world. He is known as the Father of Modern Biology. Darwin spent all his life studying nature and making notes about all the species(物种)he found.
Darwin was born in 1809 in England. Like many geniuses he didn't do well at school and got poor marks. He was a good athlete though and loved exploring nature and collecting sea shells. He also kept doing chemistry experiments and so his classmates gave him the nickname "Gas"
His father was a doctor and expected Charles to become one too. Charles started studying medicine at Edinburgh University, but soon gave up his studies there. He went on to study religion at Cambridge University instead. There he started collecting insects like beetles and paid too little attention to his studies.
In 1831,at the age of 22 , Darwin went on a five-year expedition to South America , Australia and South Africa by ship. He was often seasick, but the things he saw on this long journey changed his life. He collected many fossils as well as animal and plant specimens. He spent the rest of his life studying what he had seen and he wrote many books.
In 1839, Darwin married his cousin, Emma Wedgwood, with whom he had ten children! He was a loving father and enjoyed family life, which was always more important to him than his research. In spite of having many health problems throughout his life, Darwin lived until he his 73.
Darwin's most famous book On the Origin of Species came out in 1859 and sold out in a day.It said that all living things were related, which meant that human beings were just another kind of animal. These ideas were not popular at first, but now most people agree with them and admire Darwin as a brilliant scientist.
