When I was sixteen years old,I made my first visit to the United States. It wasn’t the first time I had been abroad.Like most English children I learned French at school. And I had often been to France,so I was used to speaking a foreign language to people who didn’t understand French. But when I went to America I was really looking forward to having a nice easy holiday without any language problems.

“Yes,”I said,“I want to give my friend a ring.”
“Well,that’s nice,”he said.“Are you getting married?But aren’t you a bit young?”
“Who’s talking about marriage?”I replied.“I only want to give my friend a ring to tell her I’ve arrived. Can you tell me where there’s a phone box?”
“Oh!”he said.“There’s a phone downstairs.”
When at last we met,Danny explained the misunderstandings to me.

Language experts say that spoken English was almost the same in the American colonies and Britain two hundred years ago.Americans began to change the sound of their speech after the Revolutionary War in seventeenseventysix. They wanted to make it different to separate themselves from the British in language,in the same way they separated themselves from the British government.
Some American leaders proposed major changes in the language.Benjamin Franklin wanted a whole new system of spelling. His reforms were not accepted. But his ideas did influence others. One was Noah Webster.
Webster wrote language books for schools. He believed the United States should have a system of its own language as well as government.Webster published a dictionary of the American language in eighteentwentyeight.  It established rules for speaking and spelling the words used in American English.
Webster wrote that all words should be said in the order of the letters that spell  them. This is why Americans use the letters“e-r”to end many words instead of the  British“r-e.”He spelled the word“center,”for example,“c-e-n-t-e-r,”instead of  the British“c-e-n-t-r-e.”
Webster’s rule for saying every part of a word made American English easier for foreign settlers to learn. They learned to say“waistcoat,”for example, the way it is spelled instead of the British“weskit.”
The different languages of many people who came to the United States also helped make American and British English different. Many of their foreign words and expressions became part of English as Americans speak them.
Sometimes Americans and British people do not understand each other because of different word meanings.  For example, the word“jumper”in Britain means a sweater. In the United States,it is a dress. The British word“brolly” is an“umbrella”in America. And the British call potato chips“crisps”.All of these differences led British writer George Bernard Shaw to joke that Britain and America are two countries separated by the same language!
What does the underlined word“it”in the first paragraph refer to?

A.Separating themselves from the British in language.
B.Written English in America.
C.Spoken English in America.
D.Spoken English in Britain.

Why did American want their language to differ from British English?

A.Because they found British English hard to speak.
B.Because they found British English hard to spell.
C.Because they wanted to have their own language and government.
D.Because foreign settlers wanted them to change their language.

Why do Americans use the word“meter”instead of the word“metre”?

A.Because Benjamin Franklin didn’t like the word“metre”.
B.Because the word“meter”was absorbed from other languages.
C.Because Webster thought the word should be said in order of the letters that are spelt.
D.Because Webster thought American English should be made easier for foreign settlers to learn.

Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons why English began to change in  America?

A.The government leaders.
B.Noah Webster.
C.Immigration to America.
D.The difficulty Americans had in understanding the British.

What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.Noah Webster’s simplifying the spelling of English words.
B.Differences and similarities between British and American English.

I suppose that having been brought up in the countryside and close  to animals,it wasn’t remarkable(不平常的)when I decided  to become a vet(兽医).Luckily I was also good at all the necessary science subjects. So after the college entrance examination I found myself at a veterinary college, training to look after animals in all kinds of situations.I hoped that I would be able to work in the research field so that I could find cures for animal diseases.
Much to my surprise,I found public health care was a very important aspect of my course. This is an area of animal medicine where a vet’s work has many things in common with the work of a doctor of human diseases.I particularly liked it because I recognized that the study of animal diseases can help human medicine. As we know, many infectious diseases come from animals—including SARS and bird flu.
Some of the infections have only been understood after  carefully analytical  work  in labs  by  animal doctors.  They  helped identify the animal source for diseases such as SARS.  They were also the first to identify various kinds of viruses.  Sometimes vets are also able to suggest a cure for human  illnesses. When I found this out I was determined to make  public health medicine my chosen career.
After graduation,I applied for a job in public health.Soon  I found myself concerned with the problem of bird flu. This is  an illness that attacks birds, but humans can catch the disease  if they are in close contact with infected birds.Though the job  is dangerous,it makes me proud that vets and other animal  disease researchers are in the front line helping to fight these  unknown human diseases.
The writer wanted to become a vet mainly because
______.

A.he did well in all necessary subjects
B.he wanted to help animals
C.he was close to animals in his early life
D.he wanted to find cures for human diseases

What made the writer particularly like the course of public health care was that________.

A.it was both important and interesting
B.it could help him connect many human diseases with animals
C.it made a vet’s work very much like a doctor’s
D.it could help human medicine by studying animal diseases

What can be followed if this passage continues?

A.The writer’s happy family life.
B.How the writer did research work in studying bird flu.
C.How the writer dealt with the relationship with other workmates.
D.What difficulty the writer met in the research work.

Which of the following is implied in the passage?

A.Animals with infectious diseases should be killed.
B.Keeping animals is dangerous to humans.
C.Dangerous as a vet’s job is,it is significant to the human race.
D.Animal researchers work in the same way as human doctors.

Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.Being a vet is helpful to both animals and humans.
B.Vets can cure both animals and humans.
C.Vets helped identify animal resources for SARS.
D.Both SARS and bird flu are infectious diseases coming from animals.

I have a new hero.It is G.M. Hennen.I found him in the old newspapers as I was doing my research for the column A Look Back in History.
In 1958,he retired as a newspaper carrier from the Sherman Herald Democrat. He was 77 years old and had delivered four million copies of the Democrat. He had gone through 17 automobiles and had thrown on average 400 newspapers a day,six days a week.He drove 100 miles a day, including the day he collected.
Before he was a newspaper carrier,he was also a teacher and a construction worker.

Mr.Hennen had only one wreck in 30 years. The car spun (疾驶) out of control and flipped on its top. That didn’t stop him.A man with a truck used a tow rope to flip the car back over and tied the doors shut, leaving Mr.Hennen to continue on his way.Now_that_was_determination!
Mr.Hennen told of the time his headlights went out as he was delivering newspapers. He borrowed a kerosene lantern (煤油灯) from a farmer to light the way and continued his route.

If you look for a book as a present for a child, you will be spoiled for choice even in a year where there is no new Harry Potter J.K Rowling’s wizard is not alone:the past decade has been a harvest for good children’s books, which has set off a large quantity of films and in turn led to increased sales of classics such as The Lord of the Rings.
Yet despite that, reading is increasingly unpopular among children.According to statistics,in 1997,23%  said they didn’t like reading at all.In 2003,35% did.And around 6% of children leave primary school each year unable to read properly.
Maybe the decline is caused by the increasing availability of computer games.Maybe the books boom has affected only the top of the educational pile.Either way,Chancellor Gordon Brown plans to change things for the bottom of the class. In his prebudget report,he announced the national project of Reading Recovery to help the children struggling most.
Reading Recovery is aimed at six year olds, who receive four months of individual daily halfhour classes with a specially trained teacher. An evaluation earlier this year reported that children on the scheme made 20 months’ progress in just one year, whereas similarly weak readers without special help made just five months’ progress, and so ended the year even  further below the level expected for their age.
International research tends to find that when British children leave primary school they read well, but read less often for fun than those elsewhere.Reading for fun matters because children who are  keen on reading can expect lifelong pleasure and loving books is an excellent  indicator  of  future  educational success.According to the OECD,being a regular and enthusiastic reader is of great advantage.
Which of the following is TRUE of Paragraph 1?

A.Many children’s books have been adapted from films.

C.The sales of classics have led to the popularity of films.
D.The sales of presents for children have increased.

A.the number of top students increased with the use of computers
B.a decreasing number of children showed interest in reading
C.a minority of primary school children read properly
D.a large percentage of children read regularly

What do we know about Reading Recovery?

A.An evaluation of it will be made sometime this year.
B.Weak readers on the project were the most hardworking.
C.It aims to train special teachers to help children with reading.
D.Children on the project showed noticeable progress in reading.

There are a number of special days of the year that are celebrated in different countries. The origins of most of the days are unknown. They were certainly not created by individual people.Other days, however, especially those celebrated in western countries often owe their origins to a particular person. One of the most popular of these, even though it is fairly recent,is Mother’s Day.Mothers have always been highly regarded in all cultures. The ancient Romans had a festival known as Hilaria, during which children took presents to the temple of the “Mother of the Gods”.The Christian Church adopted this idea and called it Mothering Sunday. However, over the years this custom was gradually forgotten, and almost disappeared by the end of the 19th century.
Born in 1864 in Virginia,USA,Anna Jarvis was a school teacher and believed children should show gratitude to their mothers for all their love and care.Encouraged by a friend, she wrote to thousands of important people—politicians, churchmen, doctors, city officials and asked them to support her idea:a special day of the year for thanking mothers.
In 1910 the Governor of West Virginia introduced Mother’s Day into the state. The date chosen was May 10—the second Sunday in May,which is still observed in America today. This date was chosen because May 10 was the date on which in 1908 Anna Jarvis’s mother died.In 1914 President Woodrow Wilson made May 10 the official date for Mother’s Day throughout the United States.
Soon there was a Mother’s Day International Association and the custom began to be adopted in many countries of the world.
Anna Jarvis,a sad and disillusioned woman died in 1948.The custom she had worked hard to establish and which had become almost universal had lost its original purpose. It had been taken over by business. As with Christmas, the giving of presents and the sending of cards had become a multimillion dollar industry.
The story is about ________.

A.Mothering Sunday for Christmas
B.the origin of a special day for mothers
C.President Wilson and Anna Jarvis
D.how people celebrate Mother’s Day

Hilaria was a festival in ________.

A.ancient Rome
B.America
C.China
D.the Christian Church

Anna Jarvis wanted to ________.

A.thank her mother for her care
B.introduce a celebration for mothers
C.meet thousands of important people
D.make her pupils celebrate her on Mother’s Day

May 10 became the date for Mother’s Day because ________.

A.May is in the American spring
B.it was the second Sunday in May in 1910
C.President Wilson liked the date
D.this was the date on which Anna Jarvis’s mother died

Unfortunately,Anna Jarvis was not happy with Mother’s Day when she died because ________.

A.her mother was not there to see it
B.she had never been a mother herself
C.people were too interested in making it a business
D.no one gave any presents or cards to their mothers

The Pow Wow(印第安人的帕瓦仪式)is held annually at the Trail of Tears Commemorative Park in Hopkinsville,Kentucky. The Pow Wow provides an opportunity for participants to celebrate the great heritage of the American Indian through dance, drumming and singing, traditional foods, crafts and storytelling. For the visitors,it provides an exceptional educational experience.
The idea for hosting a Pow Wow in Hopkinsville was developed by the Trail of Tears Commission in 1988 as a way to commemorate(纪念)the 150th anniversary of the cruel Cherokee removal from their ancestral homelands in the southeast, across the Mississippi to Indian Territory, which is now Oklahoma.Known as the“trail of tears”,this forced removal affected Hopkinsville, which was along the trail, and served as a major stopping point for the Cherokees during the freezing winter of 1838 and 1839.
The president and founder of the Trail of Tears Commission,Beverly Baker, began work in late 1985 to gain support for his idea for a commemorative park, and to encourage interest in acknowledging this event in local history.Volunteers joined Baker in pursuing support of the park and designation(指定)of the Trail of Tears as a National Historic Trail.City and county governments, and a church offered$1,000 in seed money to the group. And then other help came.
A proclamation(宣言)by the governor set 1988 as the Year of the Trail of Tears. In 1992,the Pow Wow celebrated the Year of the American Indian. The state provided money to help develop the Pow Wow grounds as the Trail of Tears Commemorative Park, which opened in 1993.In 1996,the National Park Service designated the park as a site on the National Historic Trail of Tears—the first nonfederal property to receive this designation.Since 1989,Pow Wow’s own income has supported development, operation, and maintenance of the park and its heritage center.School and scout groups, local clubs, and tourists regularly visit the park and center.
The Pow Wow is held each year to________.

When an NBA player is young he thinks he can win the championship by himself. It is only later when he has aged and been through many battles that he learns an important lesson:there_is_no_“I”_in_“team”
There is no better example of the value of teamwork than the Boston Celtics.Paul Pierce,Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett were all superstars on three different teams.Yet,none of them had any titles to show for it.Then, last season, they decided to sacrifice money and individual statistics to play together.Garnett and Allen joined Pierce on the Celtics and changed the NBA in the process.
It started in simple ways.Garnett and Allen are two of the most intense athletes in the world. They treat every second of every practice like it is the NBA championship. If you want to play alongside them then you will have to do the same. So,the young guys on the Celtics started giving their full effort too.
Pierce had been the star of the Celtics for many years. He used to shoot the ball many times in a game. But with the addition of Allen and Garnett he shot less and focused on defense.
His selflessness showed the young players that doing what made the team better was the only thing that mattered.
When the Celtics were winning and the game was almost over,Garnett,Pierce and Allen would come out of the game. But they wouldn’t just sit on the bench.Instead, they stood and cheered and screamed for their teammates. They wanted to support their friends and teammates.
Now,the guys who don’t play know they can still affect the game by cheering so they scream and cheer when Garnett,Allen and Pierce are playing. The Celtics have developed a strong relationship. They are more than just teammates. They are brothers.
The result: the Boston Celtics won the 2008 NBA championship and are considered the favorites to win the Eastern Conference championship again this year.
There is a saying that goes,“A successful team beats with one heart.”If that is the case, the Celtics may have the biggest heart in the NBA.
What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.The stories of three famous basketball superstars.
B.The importance of teamwork among teammates.
C.A famous basketball team named the Boston Celtics.
D.Matches between the Boston Celtics and other teams.

From the passage,we can see that________.

A.most mature NBA players believe they can win the championship by themselves
B.Pierce,Garnett and Allen had to give up personal glory for team success
C.Allen,Pierce, together with Garnett had been the stars of the Celtics for many years
D.Paul Pierce,Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett had won NBA championships before they joined hands

What does the underlined sentence “there is no ‘I’ in ‘team’” mean in Paragraph 1?

A.“I” will be missing once “I” am on the court.
B.“I” work so hard in a team that “I” will forget who “I” am.
C.The members of the team are more important than the individual.
D.Surrounded by other players,“I” don’t seem to exist.

Which of the following is NOT true about Pierce’s recent performance?

A.He became an even better shooter with others’ help.
B.He focused much more attention on defense.
C.He created more chances for teammates.
D.He stood and cheered for his teammates.

Which of the following didn’t contribute to the success of the Boston Celtics?

A.The whole team has become devoted to each and every stage of the game.
B.The cooperation and teamwork among the teammates in the match.
C.The influence of Garnett,Allen,Pierce and other teammates’ cheering.
D.The increasing frequency of team players on the bench.

Lack of water creates a survival problem for all desert animals. And animals can live only within a relatively narrow temperature range. For four or five months of the year, the daily temperatures in the desert may actually go beyond this range. So survival for desert animals is very difficult.
Fortunately, most desert animals have evolved (进化) to solve the heat and water problems the desert environment creates.
Take Phainopepla, a slim black bird for example. It breeds during the relatively cool spring, then leave the desert for cooler areas. Many birds are active only at dawn and within a few hours of sunset. Some birds, such as the kingbird, continue activity throughout the day,but always fly or sit in the shade.
A few desert animals, such as the Roundtailed Ground Squirrel, sleep away the hottest part of the summer. They also hibernate (冬眠) in winter to avoid the cold season. Some desert animals such as Desert Toads, stay deep under the ground until the summer rains fill ponds. They then come out from under the ground, breed, lay eggs and supply themselves with food and water for another long period. Some smaller desert animals make a hole below the surface of the soil or sand to escape the high temperatures at the desert surface.
Certain desert lizards (蜥蝎) are active during the hottest seasons, and move extremely rapidly over hot surfaces, stopping in cooler “islands” of shade.Even their legs may be longer so they absorb less surface heat while running.
How many survival problems are mentioned for desert animals in Paragraph 1 ?

B.Two.
C.Three.

When can we have the highest chance to see many birds in a desert?

Learning to save money when you’re young is an important lesson. All good lessons and habits begin early, and saving is a skill that everyone needs. Many people—adults included—do not have a good sense of saving for the long run.I have been lucky to learn this lesson early because I have had a grasscutting business since I was 10 years old.Of the money I make I spend about 10 percent and save the other 90.
Making_sure_you_save_and_don’t_spend_too_much_is_a_good_way_to_build_up_wealth.I have put my earnings in a bank. Many teens I know spend all the money they earn so it never has a chance to grow.Young people should realize that their teenage years are a great time to begin saving.
At high school many parents pay for almost everything,so your expenses can be small. If you have a job,you should have fun with some of the money. But you should also save some so that it will grow. Then you can begin planning for your future. When you spend money, you not only lose that money, but also lose the interest you could have earned by saving it.
After high school, college is expensive and then“real” life begins, with expenses such as food and rent.If you can hold onto a good percentage of the money you earn as a teen, going to college and buying a house will be much easier.________ ,the more time the money has to grow.If you are in your thirties without any savings, you will always have to struggle. The earlier you begin saving, the easier it is to create a nest egg.
Later in life it can be hard to start saving because general costs of living are more expensive and you may only have enough to pay your bills. If you want to buy a house and have a family, you need money to start with, which comes from saving.
Many say money cannot make you happy, and this is true. But money can help you to lead a secure life.
Saving early will mean you will have to work for fewer years when you are older. It will also allow you to spend time doing the things that you want to do.
In addition to this,it will mean you can live the way you want to without worrying.
What’s the best title of the passage? (no more than 5 words)

Migrations are one of the animal kingdom’s most widespread phenomena. They are seasonal tests of endurance, collective journeys often taken at great costs by birds, whales, land mammals, insects, and other creatures that are wired to travel.Scientists estimate that onethird to half of all animals—and even some microorganisms—migrate during part of their lives.
According to scientists, human actions are threatening many migrations.Habitat destruction, the creation of obstacles such as dams and fences, overexploitation of natural resources, and climate change are combining to make migrations increasingly difficult for many species.
Global warming, for example,is changing flowering times and other natural cycles, driving many birds and insects to move their ranges or arrive before or after their food sources have appeared. Many of the planet’s great migrations have already disappeared.
By increasing public awareness of the troubles of migratory animals and committing to the preservation not only of individual species but also their way of life, many migrations can still be saved.Migrations should be saved,if not for the absolute fear that seeing millions of animals moving with one purpose elicits, then for their ecological importance.
“What we really want to protect is the natural phenomenon of abundance,”Wilcove said.“If we wait until migrating animals are endangered, then we lose both the ecosystem benefits associated with their abundance and also the wonder and majesty(壮丽)of migrations.”
“It’s like global warming” he said.“You have to alert people, and after a while, the public knows about it and they do something about it.That’s when the big changes will come about.I think there’s absolute hope.”
When animals begin to migrate, they will________.

A.achieve it whatever is needed
B.spend half of their lives in migrating
C.make the journey in an individual way
D.adapt to the season at a fixed place

Which of the following affects flowering times?

C.Global warming.
D.The use of natural resources.

Migrations should be saved because________.

A.it is a pleasure to see millions of animals moving with one purpose
B.the way of individual species’ life should be protected
C.it is environmentally critical mass movement
D.the benefits of the ecosystem are connected with it

The attitude of Wilcove towards saving migrations is ________.

A.sympathetic
B.negative
C.suspicious
D.optimistic

What’s the passage mainly about?

B.Global warming makes animals migrate more frequently.
C.Animals’ migrations are affected by their environment.
D.Migrating animals are reducing in numbers rapidly.
