David believes people shouldn't smoke in public places as it harms others.
Joe insists that smokers should put the cigarette ends where they should go.
Sophie holds that this question should call for a further argument.
Michael thinks cigarette taxes should be raised for free healthcare for nonsmokers.
Bauer thinks that victims of second - hand smoking should leave smoking areas to avoid harm.
A
The stupid thing is, I often see people smoking and then they throw the cigarette ends away from them when they have finished, not even stopping them but it just seems like once they have finished, they don't want it near them, perhaps they ought to have to carry their own ash trays in their pockets.
B
In many places, there are no non - smoking bars or restaurants.Unless people refuse to go out with friends who smoke, they cannot avoid passive smoking.Society accepts that adults can decide to harm themselves.so long as they do not harm others. This is why the suggestion is not arguing that people should be banned from smoking in private.Passive smokers do choose to breathe in other people's smoke. If they do not want to smoke passively, they do not need to go to places where smoking is allowed. There is therefore no reason to prevent smoking in public.
C
I'm only for smoking because not only do nice people and many friends and family of mine smoke, but this debate needs someone to take the side of the smoker.Otherwise we're just picking on a set of people. The only comment so far for smoking has been that clever one about how they pay for it.Smoking has its good points, whether it is giving job opportunities to millions of people, or getting extra breaks at work.Anyway, I do have a lot to say against smoking too, but again, debate.
D
What I care about is whether people can get free healthcare. Some people deliberately take dangerous toxins into their bodies because they're "addicted" while there are other people like my uncle who died of lung cancer and he never smoked in his life.It makes you wonder why cigarettes are so cheap.Surely all the taxes from cigarettes ought to go to help people who don't smoke.Perhaps we ought to sort things out.
E
Completely against it.I work in a bar and 1 get so sick of coming home smelling like a bonfire. And if that isn't enough, I'm probably going to get lung cancer from those idiots that decide to excite themselves. However,! do understand that for some older smokers it is a habit because they may have been smoking long before they knew it was bad for them.I do think there's no excuse for my generation to do it though and if they want to die, then go to do it in your own home.
F
Phil and I had a good argument today in the pub.He made the comment, "If he wants to smoke and kill himself, he can!", about which I said "You want to get on your motorbike and risk death, fine", which are basically the same thing. He made the point that he's a good driver and it's not his fault if he gets hurt, but at the end of the day, his fault or not, he knows he could get killed, and he's still taking the risk of being on a bike.I think it's a sick thing to say, being honest! If people want to put something in their mouth and blow on it, they should be allowed without having things like that being said ! It's a free country!

Sociologists have long recognised that organisations of less than 200 individuals can operate through the free flow of information among the members. Once their size goes beyond this figure, the organizations are getting less flexible. So it seems necessary to prevent total disorder resulting from failures of communication.
One solution to this problem would, of course, be to structure large organisations into smaller units of a size that can act as a group. By allowing these groups to build reliance on each other, larger organizations can be built up. However, merely having groups of, say, 150 will never of itself be a complete solution to the problems of the organization. Something else is needed: the people involved must be able to build direct personal relationships. To allow free flow of information, they have to be able to communicate with each other in a casual way. Maintaining too formal a structure of relationships inevitably prevents the way a system works.
The importance of this was drawn to my attention two years ago by the case of a TV station. Whether by chance or by design, it so happened that there were almost exactly 150 people in the station. The whole process worked very smoothly as an organization for many years until they were moved into purpose-built accommodation. Then, for no apparent reason, the work seemed to be more difficult to do, not to say less satisfying.
It was some time before they work out what the problem was. It turn out that, when the architects were designing the new building, they decided that the coffee room where everyone ate their sandwiches at lunch times was an unnecessary luxury and so did away with it. And with that, they accidentally destroyed the close social networks that strengthened the whole organization. What had apparently been happening was that, as people gathered informally over their sandwiches in the coffee room, useful information was casually being exchanged.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN EIGHT WORDS.)
What size of an organization may lead to communication failures?
What are the two solutions to the communication problem within a large organization?
After the TV station moved into new accommodation, its operation ___________________________.
From the case of the TV station, we can conclude it is ____________________________________ that make(s) an organization more successful.
How would you like to wear the same underwear (内衣裤) for weeks? Owing to the work that has gone into developing intelligent materials, this may not be as1as it sounds. Self-cleaning clothes have now been created, and these new materials provide2resistance to dirt as well as water. As a result, they require much less cleaning than traditional materials.
The creation of self-cleaning clothes provides an example of how nature helps scientists develop better products. This self-cleaning nature is known as the "lotus effect". The name comes, of course, from the lotus leaves, which are famous for growing in muddy lakes and rivers while remaining almost3clean. By observing nature, scientists are4the qualities of the lotus leaves to the materials they have engineered. Because of this, some remarkable new products have been5. Among them are special windows that are resistant to dirt and water. A special6on these windows not only prevents dirt from sticking to their surfaces, but also allows dust to be easily washed off by the rain. In fact, these new windows have already been7to some cars. Even when traveling at high speed through rain, these cars never have to use their windshield wipers (雨刮器).
Although we have already seen some practical applications, even more dramatic8will be made in the future, and they will, perhaps, change our world completely. Undoubtedly, technology is an important development, and it will have an even bigger9on our lives.

Third, there may occur the danger of a leak or an explosion at the power station. As with the other two dangers, this is not very likely to take place. 4 However, it can happen.

Laughter and tears are part of living. But do you find enough time for laughter? I am not
asking if you experience lots of good times. Of course we should laugh during the happy times.
1
Erma Bombeck is known for her humorous books, but she wrote one that covered a more
serious topic: cancer in children. Erma talks with lots of children with cancer and learns an important life lesson from them. 2
She tells the experience of 15-year-old Jessica from Burlington, VT. Jessica’s leg was amputated (锯掉) at the knee because of cancer. Jessica tells about playing soccer. She kicked the ball hard and it flew off in one direction while her artificial leg flew another way. Then “the tall, pretty person that I am,” she said, “sat on the floor in laughter.”
Jessica may not have laughed about her cancer, but she laughed about dealing with its results. 3
Then there is the story of 17-year-old Betsy. She made her way to the radiation room(放射室) for
her regular radiation therapy. As usual, she dropped her hospital coat and, wearing only her birthday suit, climbed onto the table and waited. After a couple of moments she began to realize something disturbing: the extra people in the room were not the medical students she had thought, but rather painters giving an estimate on painting! 4 And like Jessica, her ability to laugh helped her to deal with one of the most difficult things a young person can endure(忍受) — cancer.
There is a time to weep and a time to laugh. 5 And you’ll smile at the end.
A.She was learning to wear an artificial leg. |
B.And her laughter helped her cope. |
C.You would be happy if you find reasons to laugh. |
D.Betsy laughed heartily about the incident. |
E. But do you also laugh during the difficult times?
