For over one hundred and fifty years,Americans of all social classes have worn blue jeans.  Whether they are worn for work or for fashion today.Strauss’ invention continues to be popular not only among Americans but also among people around the world.
Levi Strauss was born in Germany in 1829. He grew up in Kentucky before moving to New York in 1847.Before becoming an American citizen and moving to the West in 1853,Strauss worked in his brother’s dry goods business. This gave him a chance to produce his famous invention. In 1873,Strauss received a letter from a Jewish tailor named Jacob Davis who had invented a process of connecting pockets with copper rivets(铆钉).This made the pants last a long time.Because Davis did not have the money to patent his idea,he offered to share it with Strauss if Strauss would agree to pay for the patent.      .
By the time Strauss died in 1902,he had made a great contribution to American fashion.

Tom, Eric, Tess and Ann are talking about in what way they would like their schools improved. Read the following descriptions (A, B, C and D) and match them with the four opinions.
Tom: I’d like somewhere to sit and read and enjoy myself.
Eric: I hope our school can be more comfortable and convenient.
Tess: I really prefer to have a place to do some exercise after class.
Ann: I think our school should buy more equipment like computers.

               A
What I’d most like to have is a little café, where we students can rest and do some reading. At the moment people have to stand in the passage, or even outside and there’s nowhere to buy a drink or something, or read the paper, so people don’t stay in school for long after the lessons finish. I think it would be completely different if they had somewhere to enjoy themselves.
                B
Our school is big with nice modern buildings and everything, but there is one thing I would really love ---- a gym. We’re right in the middle of a big city and the traffic is very busy, so I find it very difficult to get out to the gym at lunchtime. A gym would be good for the school. If more people went to the gym and did some exercise, they’d probably work better.
              C
Our school is just uncomfortable in every way. For example, the chairs are really uncomfortable, so the next thing I’d like to do is get some comfortable chairs of good quality. Oh, and the worst thing is that we’re on the fifth and sixth floors of our building, so I’d love to have some lifts put in. Just one little lift would make our lives so much easier.
                 D
Our school has a nice building, and is in a nice part of the city. Unfortunately we haven’t got much equipment, so I’d really like to have a computer room with the Internet available. I think students can learn a lot this way. And I’d like to have VCD sub every classroom instead of tapes. VCDs are so much more interesting for learning a language, I think.

A.Take actions                             B.Accept Yourself

E.Focus on Yourself                        F.Give Yourself a break
How to Find Yourself
Do you often feel lost?Do you think you are living somebody else’s life? If yes, discover ways to find yourself by going through the following article.
. __________ If you are thinking, “how to find yourself when you are lost?”, then the first thing to do is to have a rest from everything—work, personal life and all worldly things. Give time to yourself to think why you seem lost. Is it because of over work? Is it because you are not leading a life that you want to? Or is it because you are not satisfied with the people or things around you? Try to find answers to these questions to determine the cause behind your restlessness.
. __________ For once, instead of being the way others want you to be, be yourself. Look within and find yourself in you. Think about the things that you would want to do if you didn’t have any family obligations or any money issues. Think about the kind of relationship you would want to be in, the place that you would like to stay in, the kind of lifestyle you would like to lead, if you didn’t have the society or people around you, judging all the time. If you really want to know how to find inner peace, then think, what you would want others to describe you as—an honest person? Or adventurous? Or loving, or realistic? Once you look within, you will know the answer and then try to be exactly that.
. __________  Thinking deeply about the past, the time or situations when you were the happiest, is another way to find yourself .Think what you were doing or with whom you were, when you were the happiest. This will help you to identify things that you want to do in life that make you happy and also certain people whose company you enjoy.
. __________   Knowing yourself and determining what you to do with your life will not come to you in a day or two. Discovering oneself is an ongoing process and it can take months or sometimes even years to truly find yourself. So, it’s important that you maintain a written record of all your feelings and thoughts, which you can go through at a later stage. Pour all your emotions and feelings about life in it and who knows may be one day going through it, you will find yourself.
. __________  Once you have discovered what you want to do with your life, make a move for change and self improvement. Even if it means taking up small things such as dancing or painting, go ahead and do it. If you want a career change, plan and take steps so that it can take place smoothly. If you are stuck in a bad relationship and find yourself unable to mend it, break away. At the beginning, you may find yourself slightly unbalanced, but with time everything will be fine.
It is very important for you to truly find yourself, before it is too late. If you do not find yourself now, you will spend your life with somebody you do not even know, i.e. yourself.

Watching a sporting event with family and friends under the sun is a great experience in summer.     In the United States, heat exposure led to 8,000 deaths between 1979 and 2003. Luckily, a little prevention can go a long way towards making sure of an enjoyable day.
Know the danger
Heat-related illnesses do not require record-breaking temperatures to occur.    The body’s temperature can reach 106 or 107 degrees Fahrenheit on a 90-degree day, creating a potentially deadly situation. Factors such as age, weight or a medical condition can influence people.
Drink plenty of water
Sweating is your body’s key way to keep cool, so drink water to stay well hydrated(含水的) before you feel thirsty. A cool beer may sound perfect on a hot day, but drink responsibly. Alcohol stops the body’s cooling system and causes you to go to the bathroom frequently.

Wear light-colored and loosely fitting clothing, so air can go around your body and help keep you cool. A hat is a must to help you keep cool, since your head contains many blood vessels(血管), and sun block(防晒乳) is always a good idea.
Take action
What should you do if you are suffering from the heat while watching your favorite event?
Get up and go. It is a simple piece of advice, but could make the difference between a quick recovery and something more severe that requires medical attention. The ideal thing is to move yourself from the position you’re in to an area that is a little cooler.

A.Weather-related causes
B.Dress for the occasion
C.In hot weather, it is essential to stay hydrated.
D.You may miss a little of the action, but it beats missing a lot.

E. It is also important to take advantage of services the equipment provides.
F. But when you add sun exposure to the crowds, the results can be deadly.
G. Temperatures between 80 and 90 degrees Fahrenheit can be dangerous.

根据短文内容,从下面的A-F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项。
A. Review(复习)regularly
B. Make good use of class time
C. Find a good place to study
D. Plan your time carefully
E. Scan浏览) before you read
F. Take notes in class
Maybe you are an average student with an average intelligent. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so. Anyone can become a better scholar if he or she wants to be.  The following suggestions may be helpful to you:

When you plan your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. Be sure to set aside(抽出) enough time to complete the work that you are normally assigned each week. Of course, studying shouldn't occupy all of your free time. Don't  forget  to  set  aside  enough  time for entertainment, hobbies and relaxation.

Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything, but study materials. No radio or television! When you sit to work, concentrate on the subject!

This means  looking  a  passage  over  quickly but thoroughly before you begin to read it more carefully. Scanning a passage lets you preview the material and get a general idea of the content. Scanning will help you double your reading speed and improve your comprehension.

Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Really listening in class means less work later.  Taking notes will help you remember what the teacher says.

When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher mentioned in class. If you do it regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about tests. The purpose of test is to show what you have learned about a subject. Tests do more than just provide grades; they let you know what you need to study more, and they help to make your new knowledge permanent.

Aerobic exercise gets out heart rate going faster and increases our breathing. Activities like walking at an increased speed, dancing, swimming or riding a bicycle are good examples. Muscle-strengthening activities help build and strengthen muscle groups in the body.
Experts sat adults should get at least two and a half hours of aerobic exercise each week. Mote intense activities reduce the suggested amount of time to one hour and fifteen minutes.
Earlier advice from the Centers for Disease Control said people need to exercise thirty minutes each day for at least five days to get the health benefits of exercise. More recent research suggested that those gains are the same whether you exercise for short periods over five days or longer sessions over two or three days.   They help people guarantee that they stay with the program.

A.There are two separate , but equally important kinds of physical activity.
B.This kind of exercise includes lifting weights, or doing sit-ups and push-ups.

阅读下面的短文并从方框中的 A-F 中为每段文字选出最佳标题。其中有一项选择是多余的。(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
A. Take some time to speak English
B. Join an English club
C. Have a mirror on the wall
D. Keep it short and simple
E. Listen to good English speakers
F. Practice with peers or family
Here are some tips to improve your spoken English.

Whatever you have learnt or read in a day, practice in front of the mirror. For a start, you can read something from newspapers, English magazines, and books. Take a passage and read it aloud. After you think your accent has improved, try reciting a poem in front of the mirror. This will increase your confidence as well.

Talk to your family members and friends in English. You can also organize debates and  speeches on a low level, where everyone in your family or friend circle speaks on one topic for a few minutes. It will help you get over the fear of making mistakes, as you will be with your friends and family—your comfort zone.

Listen to people who you think are good English speakers. It will help you catch the skill better. You can also watch their videos, listen to them online, or even in person. It can be anyone from Barack Obama to your teacher in school. Find every opportunity to speak English.

You will meet people like you there and it will help you realize that you are not the only person who isn’t good at this subject. Also meeting different people will help you overcome your complex. You can also join coaching classes, which will provide you professional help in learning spoken English.

Nothing is more beautiful than simplicity. So, instead of using an ambiguous(含糊不清的) language with tough words, go for simple words. Learning any new language is difficult and English is no exception. Start simple and go with the flow. With time, you would learn bigger words too.

How to Teach a Child Respect
As a child grows out of being an infant(婴儿)and begins to notice and react to the world around them, you may find yourself wondering how you possibly pass all of the things that they need to become a responsible, respectful adult.     A child who learns to respect all he meets not only receives respect from others in kind, but learns to respect himself as well.
Instructions
★1 Show your child respect. This is perhaps the best way to teach your child how to respect others. Listen to your child by giving her your full attention and she will learn to listen to you, understanding how important this is in relationships.
★2    The more you say "please" and "thank you" to your child, the more likely he will learn to use them with you and others. Politeness then becomes a normal part of any conversation.
★3 Agree to disagree. Explain your decision so that she will understand your reasoning and expect respectful responses. Disagreeing with you aren’t equal to disobedience.
★4 Control your impulse to overreact. When a situation arises between you and your child that requires calmness, keep in mind that you are supposed to be modeling correct behavior.
★5 Praise, praise, praise! So much is focused on what a child does wrong and how to correct it that the accomplishments are not celebrated enough.

A.Teach manners by using polite requests and responses.
B.Try to remember that a child won’t always agree with you.
C.Respect is necessary for a meaningful and successful life.
D.If he sees you lose your temper, he is more likely to respond that way in future.

E.A child may act like he pleases, but will respect being given limits.
F.When you see you child exhibit respectful behavior, make sure he knows just how proud you are of him.
G.Signs such as sudden poor performance in school, behaviors like fears and threats accompany behavior problems in children.

Learning disabilities are problems that affect the brain’s ability to receive, process, analyze, or store information. The most common and best-known verbal learning disability is dyslexia(诵读困难), which causes people to have trouble recognizing or processing letters and the sounds associated with them. Learning disabilities make up at least 10 percent of the population at present.

People with learning disabilities have average or above-average intelligence, but their difficulties in managing the information their brains receive hold them back in school and at work, causing problems with self-esteem(自尊). One of the most painful aspects of having a learning disability is to have your brain’s inability to process information in certain ways mistaken for low intelligence. The disability usually only affects certain limited areas of a child’s development. In fact, rarely are learning disabilities severe enough to influence a person’s potential to live a happy, normal life.

Causes of learning disabilities are various. Environmental factors, complications during pregnancy, genetic influences, CNS(Central Nervous System) infections are all possible factors. Signs of learning disabilities may vary from person to person. Some have difficulty in speaking, spelling, listening or understanding; some can’t recognize words previously learned and others may have problems with math, direct attention or physical coordination(协调).

Diagnosis(诊断)includes intellectual, educational, speech and language, medical, and psychological evaluations. The important thing is to follow up on any concerns, whether you notice something wrong at home or a teacher raises a red flag. A specialist in learning disabilities may not be as knowledgeable about other conditions that may contribute to learning difficulties. For the diagnosis of learning difficulties, IQ test can be taken which will give the results of learning disabilities. The specialist will test sensory disorders that can lead to learning problems.

The good news about learning disabilities is that while they’re permanent, they’re also treatable. Learning disabilities fall within the class of Neurological(神经学的)issues called developmental disabilities, in which they limit success in one or more major life areas, and they can’t be reversed(彻底转变)by meditation. Among these sources are doctors, special education, teachers and mental health professionals who can help identify learning disabilities and recommend the right combination of medical, psychological, and educational treatment.

A 7.0 magnitude(级)earthquake killed more than 230,000 people in Haiti. Then an 8.8 magnitude quake killed more than 900 people in Chile. And few weeks later, a 6.0 magnitude quake struck rural eastern Turkey, killing at least 57 people.
The earthquakes kept coming hard and fast.   It’s not.The problem is what’s happening above ground, not underground, experts say.
They’re rapidly putting up buildings that can’t stand up to earth quakes, scientists believe.
And news reports and better earthquake monitoring make it seem as if earth quakes are increasing all the time.
On average, there are 134 earthquakes a year that have a magnitude between 6.0 and 6.9.So far this year there have been 40 earthquakes—more than in most years for that time period. But that’s because the 8.8 quake in Chile caused a large number of strong aftershocks.
Also, it’s not the number of quakes, but their destructive effects that gain attention. The death is largely due to building standards,     Paul Earle, a US seismologist, called for better building standards in the world’s big cities.
Of the 130 cities worldwide with populations of more than I million, more than half are likely to be hit by earthquakes.  “If you have a problem feeding yourself, you’re not really going to worry about earthquakes,” said Paul.
The earthquakes made everyone start to think   “People are paying attention to the violent planet we’re always living on.Come back an another six months if there has been no earthquakes, most people will have forgotten it again,” said US disaster researcher Dennis Mileti.

A.But it won’t last.
B.More people are moving into big cities.
C.Earthquakes don’t kill people, buildings do.
D.There have been more deaths overt the past decade from earthquakes.

E.Many people began to wonder if something terrible is happening underground.
F.While it seems as if the are more earthquakes occurring, there really aren’t.
G.But developing nations with growing populations don’t pay attention to earthquake preparedness.
