Although one might not agree because of some of the criticism of it, advertising is essential to the kind of society in which people in the United Kingdom, and a very     proportion of the world live. Advertising is necessary as a      of communicating with others, of telling them about the goods and services that are offered, and of which most of them would never      to hear at all if it were not for advertising. And advertising helps a great deal to promote a      standard of living.
In talking about advertising, one should not think only      a commercial on television, or an advertisement in the newspapers or periodicals. In its widest      , advertising includes a host of other     such as packaging, shop displays and--in the sense of communication--even the spoken word of the salesman.        , the roots of advertising are to be found in the market place.
For many years it was thought that it was enough to     goods and supply services, it is only more      that it has become increasingly understood that the production of goods is a waste of resources      those goods can be sold at a fair price within a     time span. In the competitive society in which we live, it is essential that we go out and sell what we have to offer, and advertising plays an important role in this respect, whether selling at home or in       markets.
Approximately 2 percent of the UK gross national product (GDP) is spent on advertising. But it must not be thought that this advertising tries to sell goods to consumers who do not want them. Of course, advertising does try to attract the interest of the      consumer, but if the articles when         does not match up to the standards that the advertising suggests that it will, it is obviously exceedingly unlikely that the article will sell well.

In 1971, readers around the world were astonished by some photographs which appeared in newspapers. Hidden deep in the rainforests of an island in the Philippines, was an ethnic (种族的)  36  called the Tasaday. Not until that moment did anyone have any   37    of these people. They didn’t have an agricultural economy; they hunted animals and   38   fruit from the plants in the rainforest. They carried tools made of stone, lived in   39   and wore clothes made of leaves. Unknown until 1971, they   40   became world famous. After that, there were TV   41  and books about them; people said their simple lives showed that human beings could be good and kind if they were not  42  by modern life. Then after 1974 the region was closed by the government and the world   43   about them.
In 1986, a Swiss journalist, Oswald Iten, decided to visit the Tasaday. The journey   44  thick rainforests and across rivers was hard and dangerous. Mr. Iten was   45   killed by the soldiers, villagers and businessmen who wanted to take the wood from the rainforest. Finally, Mr. Iten   46   and found the caves of the Tasaday   47  . The people were living in nearby huts and they were all   48   jeans and T-shirts, not leaves. He thought that perhaps they were not an ethnic minority   49   .
When he   50   to Switzerland, Mr. Iten wrote about the Tasaday people in the newspapers. He said he thought that they were just ordinary farmers, poor, but not   51   from anyone else. He believed that in 1971, the government told “the Tasaday” to   52   they were native people from thousands of years ago, so that tourists---and money---would start   53  into the region.
One group of experts said that they really were people who had no   54   with modern life before 1971; another group said they were just   55   the part. So who are these people, really? Perhaps we’ll never really be sure.

There is one word that is on the lips of Americans , day and night -"Sorry."
Once as I was walling on the street, a young man ran by       ,brushing against my handbag. Even as he continued on his .way, he        back and said "sorry" to me. Even in a rush, he didn't forget to apologize.

After someone occupies (占据)  a position in the lift, making it          for someone else to find a place to stand in ,isn't it necessary to      an apologize?

I arrived in the classroom, ready to share my knowledge and experience with 75 students who would be my English Literature class. Having taught in           for 17 years, I had no       about my ability to hold their attention and to           on them my admiration for the literature of my mother tongue.
I was shocked when the monitor shouted, “         !” and the entire class rose as I entered the room, and I was somewhat           about how to get them to sit down again, but once that awkwardness (尴尬) was over, I quickly          my calmness and began what I thought was a fact-packed lecture, sure to gain their respect --- perhaps          their admiration. I went back to my office with the rosy glow which comes from a sense of achievements.
My students           diaries. However, as I read them, the rosy glow was gradually           by a strong sense of sadness. The first diary said, “Our literature teacher didn’t teach us anything today.         her next lecture will be better.” Greatly surprised , I read diary after diary , each expressing a           theme (主题). “Didn’t I teach them anything? I described the entire philosophical (哲学的) framework of Western thought and laid the historical       for all the works we’ll study in class,” I complained. “How           they say I didn’t teach them anything?”
It was a long term, and it           became clear that my ideas about education were not the same as           of my students. I thought a teacher’s job was to raise          questions and provide enough background so that students could           their own conclusions. My students thought a teacher’s job was to provide           information as directly and clearly as possible. What a difference!
, I also learned a lot, and my experience with my Chinese students has made me a           American teacher, knowing how to teach in a different culture.
