The Golden Gate Bridge, the first sight for many people arriving in the United States by ship, is a well-recognized landmark, which spans(横跨) the Golden Gate Strait.
The idea for a bridge across the strait had been around for many years, but it was not easy to get the project started. The construction of the bridge finally began in 1933. The construction work set new standards for safety----workers were among the first required to wear hard hats, and an innovative(革新的) safety net saved the lives of nineteen men while the bridge was built. The Golden Gate Bridge was completed in 1937, which was finished ahead of schedule.
Joseph Strauss was the chief engineer in charge of the bridge project. However, he had little experience with the construction of suspension(悬浮)bridges. For this reason, other engineers, architects, and designers made great contributions to the design and construction of the bridge. For example, the bridge owes its art style and unique orange color to the architects Irving and Gertrude Morrow. Charles Alton Ellis was the main engineer on the project and did much of the technical work necessary to build the bridge.
Today, the Golden Gate Bridge has a main span of 4,200 feet and a total length of 8,981 feet, making it one of the longest bridges in the world. The bridge is 90 feet wide, and its span is 220 feet above the water. The towers supporting the huge cables (巨缆) rise 746 feet above the waters of the Golden Gate Strait, making them 191 feet taller than the Washington Monument. About 40 million cars cross the bridge every year. There are foghorns(雾角)to let passing ships know where the bridge is, and aircraft beacons(信号灯)on the tops of the towers to stop planes from crashing into them.
The purpose of the passage is to _______.

A.describe the construction work of the Golden Gate Bridge
B.introduce the Golden Gate Bridge
C.tell us the history of the Golden Gate Bridge
D.introduce the engineers in charge of the Golden Gate Bridge

Safety innovations during the construction of the bridge included ________.

A.hardhats and a safety net B.aircraft beacons
C.foghorns D.all of the above

It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

A.Joseph Strauss was skilled in the construction of suspension bridges
B.it took the construction workers three years to build the Golden Gate Bridge
C.about 100 thousand cars cross the Golden Gate Bridge every day
D.the Golden Gate Bridge is the longest bridge in the world

Another food which is closely associated with Americans is apple pie.Apple pie is often served hot with a spoon of ice cream or a slice of cheese at the end of the biggest meal of the day—dinner, and it is a favorite dessert throughout the nation, if a person is typical of Americans, we can say, "He is as American as apple pie."
It is true that the apple and apple pie do not originate in America, but the expression "as American as apple pie" is not the product of a pure imagination. As early as 1625, the English colonists, having brought orchards (果园) on this new land and in most of the colonial times, the apple was a main material of both plain and fancy cooking. The first Massachusetts governor, William Endicott, was one of many keen apple planters who helped to lay the foundations for today' s apple-growing industry in America.
A major attraction of the apple for the colonists was that it could be made into cider (苹果酒). Like most Europeans, English colonists held a strong suspicion (怀疑) of drinking water, and since grapegrowing was hindered by plant peats, cider became an alternative to wine.Cheap and easy to produce, it was the American drink of first choice well into the nineteenth century. Whether it was dried, raw or cooked, the apple also found its way into numerous colonial dishes, including apple sauces, pudding, stuffings and many desserts. Therefore, the conclusion to be drawn here is obvious. The apple pie became known as American, not because it was invented on this land (since it was proved that Europeans had been eating apple pies for centuries), but because, thanks to the huge orchards in the states of Washington and New York, America became the world's largest apple-producing nation.
If a person is said to be as American as apple pie, it means that _______.

A.he always prefers apple pie as a dessert B.his favourite pie is apple pie
C.he behaves and thinks in the American way D.he is good at making American apple pie

The apple can be used to make into all of the following except _______.

A.wine B.sauces C.pudding D.cider

The underlined word hindered in Paragraph 3 means.________.

A.promoted B.prevented C.improved D.enlarged

It can be concluded from the passage that_______.

A.the apple pie was first served in America
B.the English colonists developed a taste for the apple only after they, arrived at the New World
C.the expression "as American as apple pie" is a pure imagination
D.the apple pie is traditionally associated with Americans due to their large apple production

How Many Lies Do the Children Tell You?
Mothers who feel their children don’t appreciate them can add another complaint to the list: half the time, their children are lying to them. A study designed to expose the truth about lying shows that undergraduates lie to their mothers in 46% of their conversations. Still, mums should feel better than-total strangers, who are told lies an astonishing 77% of the time.
Bella DePaulo and a team of psychologists from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, asked 77 undergraduates to keep a record of all their conversations for a week, and write down whether they lied at any time. DePaulo named lying broadly, as “when you intentionally try to mislead someone”, so she would catch the smallest of lies.
The students told an average of two lies a day. They said they had been studying when they had been out drinking. One told his parents that a textbook cost $50 rather than $20 so that they would send him extra money. Female students constantly told their plain-looking roommates that they were pretty. “They are everyday lies,” says DePaulo.
DePaulo and her colleagues conclude that people tend to tell fewer lies to those they feel closest to. College students lied to their best friends 28% of the time but lied to acquaintances 48% of the time. In close relationships, people were more likely to tell “kind-hearted” lies, designed to protect feelings, rather than self-serving lies.
DePaulo finds that unmarried lovers can expect less honesty than best friends because of the insecurity that comes with romance.
Mothers can take heart from one other finding. They may have been lied to, but at least their children talked to them. The students were recorded telling few lies to their fathers because they had little interaction with them.
Female students lied to their roommates to ________.

A.get money from them B.offer them the services
C.gain more security D.make them happy

According to the passage, college students told fewer lies to ________.

A.mothers B.best friends
C.acquaintances D.romantic partners

Which of the following statements is correct ?

A.Undergraduates lie to their mothers in 77% of their conversations.
B.Strangers become very annoyed when children tell lies to them.
C.Compared with mothers, students’ fathers are told fewer lies.
D.Best friends can expect more insecurity than unmarried lovers.

What is the purpose of this article ?

A.To present a fact. B.To argue an idea.
C.To tell a story. D.To explain a theory.

One of the greatest sources of unhappiness, in my experience, is the difficulty we have in accepting things as they are.
When we see something we don’t like, we wish it could be different -- we cry out for something better. That may be human nature, or perhaps it’s something that’s ingrained(根深蒂固的)in our culture.
The root of unhappiness is that we decided we didn’t like it in the first place. We’ve judged it as bad, rather than saying, “It’s not bad or good, as it just is.”
An example: in my recent post(帖子), A Beautiful Method to Find Peace of Mind, quite a few commentators thought my outlook was negative, pessimistic, or fatalistic(听天由命的)... because I said you should expect people to mess up, expect things to go differently from what you planned. Above all, you should embrace that.
It’s too negative to expect something to go wrong, they said. However, I think it’s only negative if you see it as negative, or if you judge it as bad.
Instead, you could accept it as the way the world works -- as the way things actually are. And try to understand why they are that way.
Does it mean you can never change things? Not at all. But changing things is not because you can’t accept things as they are, but because you enjoy the process of change of learning and growing.
Can we make this world a better place? Again, that’s an assumption that it’s a bad place fight now. But instead, you could say the world is just what it is -- and that’s neither good nor bad. You can say that you’ll continue to try to do things to help others, to grow as a person, to make a difference in this world -- not because you’re such a bad person now, but because that’s the path you choose to take, because you enjoy that path.
As you catch yourself judging, and wishing for different -- try a different approach: accept, and understand. It might lead to some interesting results.
Which of the following statements is correct according to the author?

A.We can never change things because we can’t accept them.
B.We shouldn’t try to do whatever we can to help others and make a difference.
C.It’s wrong of you to expect things to go differently.
D.There is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.

What’s the main idea of the whole passage?

A.The world is a good place for us to live in.
B.Unhappiness comes from what we want to be different.
C.You might as well accept the world as it is and try to embrace it.
D.Let’s make the world more beautiful.

Where does the passage probably come from?

A.A novel. B.A news story. C.A travel guide. D.A magazine.

You want to know about my staying in America, right? Well, to tell you the truth, it is really an eye-opening experience study here.
In China, I had English classes five times a week since fifth grade. However, I didn’t know how different textbook English could be from everyday English until I came to Hotchkiss School, Connecticut.
When I first studied English, I was told to say, “I am fine.” when people say “How are you?” But in the US, I found that people say, “I am good.” or “I’m tired.”
One day, someone greeted me with “What’s up?” It made me confused. I thought for a moment and then smiled because I didn’t know what to say.
Since then, I have discovered more and more differences between Chinese and US cultures.
To my surprise, US girls spend a lot of time in the burning sun to get a tan. However, in China, girls try every possible way to get their skin paler, or “whiter.” I also surprised by how hard-working US students are. In China, schoolwork is almost everything, so we study hard and that’s it. But here, a “good” student gets good grades, does a lot for the public and plays sports or music.
The kids here are so talented, I am starting to be sorry that I gave up playing the piano at an early age and that I have never thought about sports.
What does the word “tan” in the sixth paragraph mean in Chinese?

A.晒黑 B.晒白 C.能量 D.保护

A good US student spends his/her time ________.

A.only in doing homework
B.only on sports
C.only on music
D.on studies, sports or music and public work

C.American girls love to have brown skin.
D.US students are talented and hard-working.

Two worlds come together
Imagine landing in a foreign country where you cannot speak the language, understand the culture and don’t know anybody. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a friend who could help you out?
John Smith, an English explorer who landed in America in 1607, found the best friend ever. She was a Native American named Pocahontas (1595-1617). And she did more than teach Smith the language: she saved his life, twice.
Smith was captured(捕获) by members of Pocahontas’s tribe (部落) and was going to be killed. But for some reason, the Chief’s daughter, Pocahontas, felt sorry for Smith (who was probably the first white man she had ever seen) and threw her body over his to protect him. Smith returned safely to the small village he was living in.
During the winter the English settlers did not know how to get food from nature. Pocahontas often brought food for Smith and his friends.
A year later Pocahontas’s father tried to kill Smith again because the Native Americans were very scared the English would try to take over their land. Pocahontas warned him and he was able to escape.
Later she became a Christian and eventually married an Englishman named John Rolfe.
She spent the last year of her life in London.
Pocahontas has become an American legend. Her life story has been re-created in many books and films, including Disney’s 1995 film, Pocahontas.
One of the reasons she is so popular is that many Europeans look at Pocahontas as an excellent example of how a minority can adjust into the majority. Pocahontas is also respected because of her selfless love. She proved that people can be kind and loving even to people of a different race or culture. John Smith was very different from Pocahontas but she could see he was a good man and that was all that mattered. No race or country owns goodness, love and loyalty.
What difficulties might early European settlers meet in America EXCEPT ________?

A.the fierce conflict with Native Americans B.bad-tempered natives who enjoyed killing
C.unfamiliarity with a foreign land D.lack of food in winter

Pocahontas saved John Smith twice because ______.

A.he was the first white man she had ever seen in her life
B.she wanted to become a Christian and marry an Englishman
C.she believed in general kindness even to people of a different race
D.she was on the settlers’ side and against her cruel father

According to the text, Europeans think Pocahontas _____.

A.was brave to break away from her own tribe
B.set a good example for other natives to accept the white settlers
C.was a selfless Christian who can love her enemy
D.was open to a more advanced culture

What can we infer from the passage?

A.The battles between early settlers and Native Americans resulted from their fighting for land.
B.The Europeans think the early settlers should have learned to adjust to the local cultures.
C.The creation of America is based on the settlers’ victory over the Native Americans.
D.People from different cultures can never really get along well with each other.

Announcers on China Central Television (CCTV) will need to do some fast talking to replace the popular English acronyms(首字母缩略词) they’re now forbidden to use. Shanghai Daily reports that “anchors at China Central Television [CCTV] have been banned from saying the English acronyms NBA, CBA, GDP, and the like in their programs.”
The replacement for those handy acronyms? Chinese presenters must use the full Chinese name, standardized by the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television.
Although CCTV (oops, we mean China Central Television) presenters must already have a score of at least 94 in their government-rated oral Mandarin proficiency exam(普通话等级考试), saying the full name of organizations like the CBA or WTO ― 10 and 6 character’s long separately ― is sure to challenge even the most skillful anchors. CCTV sports anchor Sun Zhengping tells Shanghai Daily, “A full Chinese explanation of the English acronyms must be followed if my tongue slips. It is a little trouble but a necessary one because not every audience member can understand the acronyms.”
Although the government isn’t giving any official explanation for the shift, it is believed to have to do with a proposal (提案) by Huang Youyi, director of the China International Publishing Group, at March’s NPC meeting. In his speech, Huang said, “With more and more publications mixing Chinese with English, measures and regulations should be adopted to avoid English invading Chinese. If we don’t pay attention and don’t take measures to stop the expansion of mixing Chinese with English, Chinese won’t be a pure language in a couple of years.”
Although China is far from the first country to take measures to protect local languages (the French and Québécois beat them to it by a long way), acronyms are more about saving time than they are about corrupting a language, we would think. Good luck to the CCTV anchors.
1. CCTV anchors have to “do some fast talking” because they can no longer ______.

A.speak as slowly as they like B.mix English into Chinese
C.use shortened Chinese expressions D.have so much time for their program

If English means endless new words, difficult grammar and sometimes strange pronunciation, you are wrong. Haven’t you noticed that you have become smarter since you started to learn a language?
According to a new study by a British university, learning a second language can lead to an increase in your brain power. Researchers found that learning other languages changes grey matter(大脑灰质). This is the area of the brain which processes information. It is similar to the way that exercise builds muscles(肌肉).
The study also found the younger people learn a second language, the greater the effect is.
A team led by Dr Andrea Mechelli, from University College London, took a group of Britons who only spoke English. They were compared with a group of “early bilinguals” who had learnt a second language before the age of five, as well as a number of later learners.
Scans showed that grey matter density(密度)in the brain was greater in bilinguals than in people without a second language. But the longer a person waited before mastering a new language, the smaller the difference.
“Our findings suggest that the structure of the brain is changed by the experience of learning a second language,” it means that the change itself increases the ability to learn.
Professor Dylan Vaughan Jones of the University of Wales, has researched the link between bilingualism and maths skills. “Having two languages gives you two windows on the world and makes the brain more flexible(灵活的)”, he said. “You are actually going beyond language and have a better understanding of different ideas.”
The findings were matched in a study of native Italian speakers who had learned English as a second language between the ages of 2 and 34. Reading, writing, and comprehension were all tested. The results showed that the younger they started to learn, the better. “Studying a language means you get an entrance to another world,” explained the scientists.
The main subject talked about in this passage is ______.

A.science on learning a second language
B.man’s ability of learning a second language
C.language learning can help brain power
D.language learning and maths study

B.a second language learner
C.a person who can speak two languages

We may know from the scientific findings that ______.

A.the earlier you start to learn a second language the higher the grey matter density is
B.there is no difference between a later second language learner and one who doesn’t know a second language
C.the experience of learning a second language has bad effect on people’s brain
D.the ability of learning a second language is changing all the time

In the last two paragraphs, the author wants to tell us that ______.

A.learning a second language is the same as studying maths
B.early learning of a second language helps you a great deal in studying other subjects
C.Italian is the best choice for you as a second language
D.you’d better choose the ages between 2 and 34 to learn a second language

We all, at one time or another, have pretended to be a rock star, singing and dancing along to our favorite song. Most of us have done this in the privacy of our own room when we were kids and as adults, in the privacy of our homes. Me? I love to do that when I drive! I turn on the radio, find a song that I can sing along too and pretty soon my arms are in the air and I am moving along to the rhythm. Most of the time, I do this on my way to work.
Yes, that is true. I will be in my nice work clothes, jamming while driving or stopped at a traffic light. I get weird looks from some people and others laugh. Personally, I love to get lost in the rhythm of a song which leads me to share with you the importance of being silly!
The definition for the word silly, according to the dictionary is: stupid, foolish and nonsensical. I know many people do not want to look foolish. So they walk around all serious, which in all honesty, is foolish!
No one is perfect, I repeat: no one is perfect. I don’t care how educated, how thin, how beautiful, how simple, how frugal, how rich, and so on… No one is perfect! So why pretend to be something you are not?
Life is so short… You never know when this beautiful journey will be over, so why waste a single second on being so full of rigidity(呆板)? Here is a quote by Souza, that I think says it all and is a great recipe for life:
"Dance as though no one is watching you,
Love as though you have never been hurt before,
Sing as though no one can hear you,
Live as though heaven is on earth."
When we were kids, we had no idea of what limitations were and we had no care in the world so we could do things without worrying about how we appeared to others. However, as we grew up, we lost that childlike innocence.
So don’t lose the child that still lives within you. The next time you feel down, go turn on your favorite song, and sing and dance along like there is no tomorrow. Or watch something that makes you laugh. Laughter is the best medicine to whatever ails you and nothing is better than laughing so hard that your tummy hurts. Trust me, you will feel a whole lot better, and who doesn’t want to feel good?
According to the passage, what does the writer usually do?

A.He pretends to be a rock star. B.He dances in his own home.
C.He sings songs while going to work. D.He gets jammed on his way to work.

What do other people think of the writer?

A.They think that the writer is strange. B.They look down upon the writer.
C.They believe that the writer is lonely. D.No one is interested in the writer.

What is the writer’s opinion about the people who look very serious?

A.They are honest. B.They are silly.
C.They are perfect. D.They are educated.

The writer quotes Souza to show that _______.

A.life is a beautiful journey B.life is full of rigidity
C.life is like a great recipe D.life is to be treasured

The underlined part “the child” in the last paragraph probably refers to _______.

A.the writer B.any child
C.the feeling of being a child D.the time of being a child

With eco-tourism on the rise, eco-hotels are fast becoming the darling of the travel industry. These days, however, staying at an eco-hotel doesn’t necessarily mean vacationing in a tree house in the Costa Rican jungle, although that is certainly a choice.
The majority of eco-hotels fall into one of several categories: hotels and resorts that conserve ecologically important habitats; “green” hotels that reduce, recycle, minimize waste, and protect water; sustainable hotels that harvest food from gardens on the hotel property or get part or all of their power from renewable energy; hotels that encourage community involvement such as guests taking part in trail clearing; and hotels that offer some form of environmental education to their guests.
As such, eco-hotels are a various group. Stylish urban hotels like the Willard Inter-Continental Washington focus on energy conservation whereas the Rosario Resort & Spa on Orcas Island in Washington State offers a wildly popular “green” vacation package where guests can “take a hike, clear a trail”.
No matter what you call them, eco-hotel, eco-lodge, eco-resort, or green hotel, they’re all part of the “greening” of the tourism industry.
Part of what drives this greening of the hotel industry is no doubt competition. Going green is yet another way to distinguish a hotel from the mass of other excellent hotels that consumers have to choose from. But for many hotels, it’s also part of their philosophy. With the concept of “going green” firmly rooted in consumers’ minds, eco-hotels have taken it to the next level, and whether or not money is the driving factor behind the greening of the hotel industry doesn’t matter so much as it’s good for the planet.

Dear All,
Happy New Year! A list of important dates for this term is attached to this letter.
Interviews for our April and September Primary One classes will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday,18th&19th January. Now is the time to apply for admission to Peak School.
Children are expected to weal their uniforms this term.As is usual at this time of the year, mornings at the school are quite cold and l would suggest children wear their sweaters to school. As the temperature goes up during the day, children tend to take off their outer clothes,so it is important that all sweatshirts are labeled(贴有标签).
I have received a few requests from parents asking if their children can wear summer uniforms this term.I am of the view that all children in the school should follow the school policy and be dressed in the appropriate uniforms. In the longer term,a number of US at school have questioned the need to have a winter and summer uniform.Perhaps.with careful consideration,we can develop a uniform that will serve children for the whole academic year.
As the foggy(多雾)mornings start to appear,a number of parents have raised concerns over the safety of those children who walk to school.  Our dark green uniforms are not particularly visible to motorists.Hopefully, the “Uniform Committee” to be set up this term will deal with this particular issue.I will keep parents informed of the channels through which views may be expressed in future newsletters.
We still have a “No Hat,No Play” rule on the playground,so children need to ensure that they have their sunhats in school at all times.
Yours sincerely,
P D Tunesi
Principal
