"How did you do it, Dad? How have you to not take a drink for almost 20 years?" It took me almost 20 years to have the to even ask my father this very personal question. When Dad first drinking, the whole family was on pins and needles every time he a situation that, in the past, would have him drinking again. For a few years we were afraid to bring it up the drinking would begin again.
"I had this little poem that I recite to myself at least four to five times a day," was Dad's reply to my 18-year-old question. "The words were an instant relief and constant to me that things were never so that I could not handle them," Dad said. And then he the poem with me. The poem's simple, yet profound words immediately became part of my daily as well.
About a month after this talk with my father, I a gift in the mail from a friend of mine. It was a book of daily affirmations (誓词)with one affirmation for each day of the year.
It has been my experience that when you get with days of the year on it, you automatically turn to the that lists your own birthday.
I opened the book to November 10 to what words of wisdom this book had in store for me. I did a double-take and tears of and appreciation rolled down my face. There, on my birthday, was the same poem that had helped my father for all these years! It is called the Serenity (安详)Prayer:

Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time!
When I was a senior in high school, I knew I wanted to pursue writing as a career.
Writing had basically me when I was only 7 years old, since that time, I’d been bombarded by guidance counselors and career planners who all me to have “a back-up plan” in case writing didn’t work out.
I’d never even a different career path, so I was very and worried. After much thought, I decided would be my “back-up plan,” and I signed up for a class through my high school.
This that every morning, I would serve as a teacher’s helper for my favorite 6th grade teacher, Mr. Ralston. Morning after morning, I showed up in Mr. Ralston’s classroom and papers for him.
Sometimes, I even a lesson or two. It was fun, and the students seemed to like me, so I was surprised when it came time for my . Mr. Ralston looked me right in the eyes and asked, “Do you really want to teach?”
“Had I really been that ?” I thought.
“Don’t misunderstand. You’ll do fine in teaching,” he continued. “But, is your really in it?”
“Not really,” I . “I want to write. I want to write news stories and fiction and poetry and so much more…but I’ve been told it’s tough to make it as a writer I thought maybe I would teach and then use my summers to pursue writing.”
As I shared with Mr. Ralston my hopes, dreams and carefully plotted-out back-up plan, he smiled and said, “Why are you preparing to with this back-up plan? If you want to be a writer, go for it! Pursue writing!”
Mr. Ralston’s to follow my dreams was the little nudge I needed to help me push past my of not making it as a writer and simply “Go for it!”
That’s what an encouraging word will do when spoken in love in season. So, let’s try and be like Mr. Ralston and speak that word of encouragement at just the right time and make a difference in someone’s life today.

As I walked into the station to pay for the gas, the attendant said to me, “You don’t look well.” This took me completely by . A little less confidently, I told him that I had never felt better. Without hesitation, he continued to tell me how bad I looked and that my skin appeared .
By the time I left the service station, I was feeling a little . About a block away, I pulled over to the side of the road to look at my face in the mirror. How did I feel? Did I look that ? Was everything all right? By the time I got home, I was beginning to feel a little . Had I picked up some rare disease?
The next time I went into that gas station, feeling again, I figured out what had happened. The place had recently been painted a bright but disgusting yellow, and the light reflecting off the walls made everyone inside as though they had hepatitis(肝炎)! I wondered how many other folks had reacted the way I did. I had let one short with a total stranger change my for an entire day. I truly feel that my mother led me here, to Morzaine, and to my future as a happy wife and businesswoman. When Mum in October 2007, I was a cook. In December that year, while I was working for a wedding, a pearl necklace Mum had left me . I was distraught(忧心如焚的). Some days later, I was that a guy who was working with us that day, “could probably have made a fortune the necklace he found.” , he returned it. Hearing how I’d Mum for six months before her death, he said, “Christmas is going to be —why not go out to the Alps for a couple of weeks?”
I came to Morzaine, a small, friendly village in the Alps and fell in love with it. What was to be a stopgap (权宜之计) trip turned into a new life. I kept traveling between London and here and felt than I had in months. In December 2008, I was as a hotel manager and moved here full time.
A month later, I met Paul, who was traveling here. We fell in love. In the beginning, I didn’t want to discuss , because the sadness of losing Mum felt great. Paul understood that and never me. But, by summer, we got married. A year later, we used his saving, and the money from the sale of Mom’s house, to build our own .
We want to give our guests a feel, so each room is themed (以……为题) around memories from our lives. There are also styles to remind me of Mom—a tiny chair which be in her bedroom is set in one room.
We are having a wonderful life and Mum naturally part of it, there’s no way we would be here if it wasn’t for the she gave me. I know she’s here in spirit, keeping an eye on us.

Run Freely ——A Lesson about Courage
One afternoon, many years ago,I went to pick up my mother from work. I got there a little early so I the car by the roadside and waited for her.
As I looked the car window, there was a small park where I saw a little boy, around one and a half to two years old, freely on the grass as his mother watched from a short .The boy had a big smile on his face he had just been set free from a .The boy would then fall to the grass, get up, and without or looking back at his mother, run as fast as he could, again ,still with a on his face, as if nothing had happened.
Kids, when they fall down, they don’t consider their falling down as a failure, but , they treat it as a learning experience. They feel inspired to try and try again until they .
Not only was I impressed by the boy’s courage, but I was touched by the manner in which he ran. With each attempt, he looked so , so natural, without signs of fear, nervousness, or of being disappointed. His only was to run freely and to do it as effectively as he could. He was just being a , just being himself. He was not looking for or worrying about whether was watching. He wasn’t concerned about being judged. He didn’t seem to be bothered(困扰) by the fact that maybe someone would see him and that it would be if he did fall. No, all that to him was to complete the task of activity at hand to the best of his ability, feeling the experience of running fully and freely.
I learned a lot from that observation and , and have successfully brought that lesson with me in life.

It’s not the goodbye that hurts.but the flashbacks that follow. My mother suffered with Alzheimer’s disease(老年痴呆症)during her last fifteen years.Until then she had been a bright, woman deeply interested and involved in the world around her.I would go home to visit her in Virginia and she would look at me in a(an) way and ask,”Who are you?”I would answer,”I'm your son.“Where do you live?”She would ask.”In California,”I would tell her.”Isn’t that interesting,”she would say,”I have a son in California.”My name had my mother completely.
She seemed forgetful and confused at the beginning of the disease, but later on she would periods of sharp anxiety. She would through the house she had lived in most of her life, crying uneasily that she wanted to go home,or she would leave home and wander away if she was not for a short time.
Hoping to please her and put her mind ,I would take her for a drive,Visiting sites where she had lived as a .In the yard of the hillside house in Shipman I sat in the car and ,the view of the old oaks and long green lawn.I could my mother there as a little girl Playing with the pet lamb she had been so fond of.I looked to her for some ,but She just shook her head and said,“I want to go home.”
Over the years I have decided that what my mother was calling home was not a ,but a time.I suspect it was a time when she was much ,when her children were still underfoot, when her husband was still energetic and considerate.
Watching my mother’s suffering set me to 55 what I would have in mindif someday I could n’t find and wanted to go there. In this family we tend to be long lived and we grow fuzzy(模糊的)minded as the years go by.At eighty I have already noticed some symptoms. My doctor says the forgetfulness is only and that it comes with age.Still the of Alzheimer is haunting(萦绕)in my mind.Someday if and when I become even cloudier minded than I am now, unable to drive and tell you where“home”is,my dear son,I expect I will a ask you to take me home.I know you Will do your best to find the place I need to be.I leave these notes for your .

The simplest way to say it is this: I believe in my mother. My belief began when I was just a kid, who dreamed of becoming a doctor.
My mother was a . Through her work, she observed that people spent a lot more time reading than they watching television. She announced that my brother and I could only watch two to three pre-selected TV during the week. With our time, we had to read two books each from the Detroit Public Library and written book reports to her. She would mark them up with check marks and highlights. Years later we realized her marks were a . My mother was illiterate(文盲).
When I entered high school I was a(n) student, but not for long. I began to like the fancy clothes. I wanted to the guys. I went from being an A-student to a B-student to a C-student. One night my mother came home from her various jobs and I about not having enough Italian knit shirts. She said, "Okay, I'll give you all the money I have this week scrubbing floors and cleaning bathrooms, and you can buy the family food and pay the bills. With the money , you can have all the Italian knit shirts you want." I was very pleased with that but once I got through allocating(分配)money, there was left. I realized my mother was a financial genius to be able to keep the roof over our heads and any kind of food on the table, let alone buy . I also realized that my wasn't going to get me anywhere. Success required intellectual preparation. I went back to my and became an A-student again, and I realized my dream and I became a doctor.
My story is really my mother's story--a woman with formal education or property who used her position as a parent to change the lives of many people around, especially her children. There is no job more important than . This I believe.
