A certain good woman one day said something that hurt her best friend of many years. She regretted it immediately and would have done anything to have taken the words back. So she went to an older, wiser woman in the village and advice.
Listening to her, the older woman the younger woman’s distress and knew she must help her. She also knew she could ease her pain, but she could teach.
Then, she said. “There are things you need to do. The first is extremely difficult. Tonight, take your best pillows and open a small hole in each one. Then, the sun rises, you must put a single feather on the doorstep of each house in town. When you are through, to me. If you’ve done the first thing , I’ll tell you the second.”
The young woman hurried home to prepare for her chore, the pillows were very to her and very expensive.
All night long, she went from doorstep to doorstep. Her fingers were . The wind was so sharp that it caused her eyes to water, but she ran on through the streets, there was something she could do to put things the way they once were. Finally she placed the last feather on the steps of the last house. Just as the sun rose, she returned to the older woman.
She was exhausted but , thinking that her efforts would be rewarded.
“Now,” said the wise woman, “Go back and your pillows. Then everything will be as it was before.”
The young woman was stunned, “You know that’s impossible! The wind each feather as fast as I placed them on the doorsteps! You didn’t say I had to get them back! If this is the second , then things will never be the same.”
“That’s true,” said the older woman. “Never forget. Each of your words is like a feather in the wind. Once , no amount of effort, how heartfelt or sincere, can ever return them to your mouth. Choose your words well and guard them most of all in the presence of those you love.”

We live in a fast-paced and anxiety-filled world that oftentimes seems to shift beneath our feet. Thus we are sometimes affected by fears or anxiety impacting our life. For as long as I could remember I had struggled with anxiety. After I left university, I made friends with a Moroccan woman at work. One day she invited me to her and her family back home. I wanted to, but I would have to travel there and I knew we would be in a very rural area. How would I cope with my ?
Then one day it to me that I had a life to live. I could choose to let anxiety me or I could go to Morocco and something different. I was 23 years old and had never been out of the UK alone. The journey to Morocco something inside me. I managed to cope with my anxiety. The sense of was overwhelming and still to this day when I get afraid of going somewhere alone, I remember how it felt when I arrived in Morocco.
Upon arrival I was so for the generous welcome I received. My friend’s family had arranged a welcome party. The people were so loving toward me. As a moment of felt in a faraway village, this reminded me that I was “good enough”, which helped to my anxiety.
Waking up the next day, in the morning light, I saw the area where we were. I was by how rural it was – and the realization that these people had very few .
In the days afterwards, I traveled around Morocco. We went to Marrakesh and the Atlas mountains. We had the most amazing food – lots of fresh fruits and vegetables.
At the end of my something inside me had changed. I realized I had not felt anxious for nearly two weeks.
Experiencing a different culture far away from home helped me to realize what is important in life, what really , and with that my anxiety . When I returned home I was much more active in my anxiety. Working with people, helping them their anxiety, is how I can share the love I found in Morocco.

Sometimes a part of us must die before another part can come to life. Even though this is a and necessary stage of our growth, it is often painful or if we don’t realize what’s happening. In fact, confusion is often the that tells us a change is taking place within us. These changes happen throughout the lives of all humans, as we move from babyhood to to teenage years and beyond. With each change from one to another, we find ourselves goodbye to an old friend, the identity (个性,身份) that we in order to move through that particular time.
Sometimes we shape these identities in relationships or jobs, and when we change, those areas of our life become . Usually, if we take the time to look into the changing surface of things, we will find that a change is taking place us. For example, we may go through one whole part of our lives creating a protective shell around ourselves we need it in defense of ourselves. One day, , we may find ourselves feeling limited and bored, wanting to move outside the we used to need; the new part of ourselves cannot be born within the of the shell our old self needed.
We may feel a strange of excitement and sadness as we say goodbye to a part of ourselves that is and make way for a whole new identity to in its place. We may find inspiration in working and studying when we think of the image of an animal who sheds (蜕毛;蜕皮) in order to way for new skin, fur, or feathers to . For example, keeping a piece of snake skin, or some other symbols of change, can us that death and rebirth are simply nature’s way of growing. We can give in to this process, letting go of our past self with great love and gratitude, and the new with an open mind and heart, ready for our next stage of life.

Now you’re a fool for helping. “I don’t want to get ” seems to have become a national motto. One summer I was driving from my hometown of Tahoe City, California to New Orleans, Louisiana. In the middle of the desert, I passed a young man standing by the roadside. He had his thumb and held a gas can in his other hand. I drove right by him. There was a time when you’d be called a jerk (混蛋) for passing by somebody _ ___ .
Several days later I was still _ _ about the hitchhiker (搭便车的人), about how I didn’t even lift my foot _ _ the accelerator (加速踏板) for him. “Does anyone stop any more?” I wondered. One way to this would be for a person to journey across the US without any money, just __ _ _ on the good will of others. What would happen? Would he find food, shelter and support?
The idea intrigued (激起兴趣) me.
The week I turned 37, I realized that I had never done something truly crazy. __ _ _ I decided to really do it: travel from the Pacific to the Atlantic without a penny. I would only accept __ _ of rides, food and places to sleep. For six weeks I hitched 82 rides and covered 4,223 miles across 14 states. I was treated kindly everywhere I went. I was __ _ _ by people’s readiness to help a stranger.
In Oregon, a house painter named Mike __ _ _ the cold weather and asked if I had a coat. I didn’t, so he gave me a big green army-style jacket. A lumber-mill worker in Michigan named Tim invited me to a(n) _ _ _ _ dinner with his family in their shabby house. Then he offered me a tent. I , but Tim insisted, packing it into my bag himself. I found people were generally compassionate. Hearing I had no money and would take none, people bought me food or __ _ _ with them whatever they happened to have. Those who had the _ _ _ _ to give often gave the most.
I’m __ _ _ to all the people I met for their rides, their food, their shelter and their gifts. My faith in ordinary folks was __ _ _. I am proud to live in a country where people are still willing to help. Now about the hitchhiker I met the other day, I am feeling __ _ that I did not stop to take him along .

When we are faced with a challenge, we usually have two . We can try to beat it off, or we can decide that the thing the challenge isn't worth the and call it quits. Although there are certainly when calling it quits is the right thing to do, in most all that is needed is and communication.

Communication is making a for discussion and talking about how you feel as opposed to just saying what the other person did wrong. you can say to a friend, "I got my feeling hurt," "You hurt my feelings," you are going to be able to solve the problem much faster.

We often talk about ourselves as if we have permanent genetic defects(缺陷) that can never be changed. “I’m impatient.” “I’m always behind.” “I always put things !” You’ve surely heard them. Maybe you’ve used them to describe .
These comments may come from stories about us that have been for years—often from childhood. These stories may have no in fact. But they can set low expectations for us. As a child, my mother said to me, “Marshall, you have no mechanical (操作机械的) skills, and you will never have any mechanical skills for the rest of your life. ” How did these expectations my development? I was never to work on cars or be around . When I was 18, I took the US Army’s Mechanical Aptitude Test. My scores were in the bottom for the entire nation!
Six years later, , I was at California University, working on my doctor’s degree. One of my professors, Dr. Bob Tannbaum, asked me to write down things I did well and things I couldn’t do. For my strong points, I down, “research, writing, analysis, and speaking. ” For the , I wrote, “I have no mechanical skills. ”
Bob asked me how I knew I had no mechanical skills. I explained my life and told him about my performance on the Army test. Bob then asked, “ is it that you can solve mathematical problems, but you can’t solve easy mechanical problems?”
Suddenly I realized that I didn’t from some sort of genetic defect. I was just living out expectations that I had chosen to . At that point, it wasn’t just my family and friends who had been my belief that I was mechanically hopeless. And it wasn’t just the Army test, either. I was the one who kept telling myself, “You can’t do this!” I realized that as long as I kept saying that, it was going to remain true. , if we don’t treat ourselves as if we have genetic defects that we can never get over, we can do well in almost we choose.

I was invited to attend a presentation at the Kentucky School. That evening I found gratitude had amazing to change our attitude…and our life.
The young musician Mr. Patrick was onto the stage in his wheelchair and began to play the piano. His fingers danced across the keys as he beautiful music. He then began to sing as he played, and it was wonderful. But what shocked me most was his smile.
Patrick was born with no eyes and an illness in the legs, which him lame for life. However, as a child, he was with artificial eyes and placed in a wheelchair. Before his first , he discovered the piano. When his mom hit any note on the piano, and within one or two , he’d get it. By his second birthday, he was playing “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”. His father was . “We might not play baseball, but we can play music together.”
When Patrick was at the University of Louisville, his father classes with him. He was also a part of the 214-member marching band! He was a blind, wheelchair-bound trumpet player; and he and his father did it together. His father the night shift(夜班)in order to accompany his daytime band practice. Patrick says, “My dad’s my .”
But even more than his musical talent, it was Patrick’s “attitude of gratitude” that _ my soul. On stage, between songs, he talked to the audience about his life and about how _ he was with a great father. When his performance was over, Patrick and his father were on the stage together. The crowd rose to their feet and for over five minutes.
We all face misfortune in our lives. ,it’s not the hardship but how we to it that will determine the joy and happiness in our lives. During times, do we spend too much time feeling for ourselves, or can we, with gratitude, learn how to dance in the rain?

Joy in the journey
If you have ever been discouraged because of failure, please read on. For often, achieving what you set out to do is not the important thing. Let me explain.
Two brothers decided to dig a deep hole behind their house. As they were working, a couple of older boys stopped by to . “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “We plan to dig a hole all the way through the !” one of the brothers volunteered .
The older boys began to , telling the younger ones that digging a hole all the way through the earth was . After a long silence, one of the picked up a jar full of spiders, worms and many other kinds of insects. He the lid and showed the wonderful to the scoffing(嘲笑的)visitors. Then he said quietly and , “Even if we don’t dig all the way through the earth, look at what we have found the way!”
Their goal was far too ambitious, but it did cause them to dig. And that is a goal is for — to cause us to move in the we have chosen, in other words, to keep us ! But not every goal will be fully . Not every job will end . Not every hope will come to pass. Not every love will last. Not every dream will be . But when you fall of your aim, perhaps you can say, “Yes, but look at what I found along the way! Look at the wonderful things my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging life is lived. And I believe it is the joy in the journey, in the end, that truly .
