It was the end of my first day as waitress in a busy New York restaurant. My cap had gone away, and my feet   26  . The loaded plates I carried   27   to be heavier and heavier. Tired and discouraged, I didn’t seem able to do anything   28  . As I made out a check for a family with several children who had changed their ice cream   29   a dozen times, I was ready to stop. Then the father   30   at me as he handed me my tip. “Well done,” he said, “you’ve   31   us really well.” Suddenly my tiredness   32  . I smiled back, and later, when the manager asked me how I’d like my first day, I said, “  33  ! Those few words of praise had   34   everything. Praise is like   35   to the human spirit; we cannot flower and grow without it. And   36  , while most of us are only too   37   to apply to others the cold wind of criticism (批评), we are   38   to give our fellows the warm sunshine of praise. Why so when one word of praise can bring such   39  ?”
It’s strange how chary (吝啬的) we are about praising. Perhaps it’s    40  few of us know how to accept it. It’s   41   rewarding to give praise in   42   in which an effort generally goes unnoticed or unmentioned. An artist gets admiration for a wonderful picture, a cook for a   43   meal. But do you ever tell your laundry manager how pleased you are when the shirts are   44   just right? In fact, to give praise   45   one nothing but a moment’s thought and moment’s effort.

As a physician who travels quite a lot, I spend a lot of time on planes listening for that dreaded “Is there a doctor on board?” announcement. I’ve been  36  only once-for a woman who had merely fainted. But the   37  made me quite curious about how  38  this kind of thing happens. The study estimated that there are a(n)  44  of 30 in-flight medical emergencies on U.S. flights every day. Most of them are not   45  ; fainting and dizziness are the most frequent complaints.  46  13% of them-roughly four a day-are serious enough to   47 a pilot to change course. The most common of the serious emergencies   48  heart trouble, strokes, and  difficult breathing.
Let’s face it: plane rides are   49  . For starters, cabin pressures at high altitudes are set at roughly   50  they would be if you lived at 5,000 to 8,000 feet above sea level. Most people can tolerate these pressures pretty   51  , but passengers with heart disease   52  experience chest pains as a result of the reduced amount of oxygen flowing through their blood.  53  common in-flight problem is deep venous thrombosis(血栓)-the so-called economy class syndrome(综合症).  54  happens, don’t panic. Things are getting better on the in-flight emergency front. Thanks to more recent legislation(立法), flights with at   55  one attendant are starting to install emergency medical equipments to treat heart attacks.

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degrees of health and wealth and the other comforts of life, one becomes happy,         becomes unhappy. This         from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, and events, and the resulting effects upon their minds.
The people who are to be happy         their attention to the conveniences of things, the pleasant parts of conversation, the well-prepared dishes, the goodness of the wines, and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the         things. They are,        , continually unsatisfied. By their words, they complain about the pleasure of society, offend many people, and         themselves disagreeable (不受欢迎的) everywhere. If this turn of mind were founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing and being disliked is perhaps taken up         by imitation (模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown         its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it are         its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and         them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of imagination, it has serious         in life, since it causes deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people offend many others, nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most         politeness and respect. This         puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at obtaining         advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step         speak a word to favor their hopes. If they cause themselves public objections (反对), no one will         or excuse them, and many         join to criticize their wrongdoings. These people should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing,         worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not,         will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient,         when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
