Do you blank out or feel so nervous in exams that you have trouble writing answers to questions that you knew just last night? If so, you likely have a case of test anxiety.
But, don’t be afraid. By recognizing the problem, you are taking the first step towards overcoming it.
Believe it or not, a touch of nervousness can sharpen your mind, allowing you to perform more quickly. This is because under stress, the body releases the hormone adrenaline (肾上腺素), which prepares it for something important that will happen. However, too much anxiety can result in sleeplessness, loss of appetite before tests, and poor performance. Some people might feel hot and tired. With great anger they often shout or complain for no reason.
If you worry a lot or are a perfectionist, you are more likely to have trouble with test anxiety. Those who have prepared poorly for a test or have had negative experiences taking tests may also experience test anxiety.
When you feel a storm of anxiety coming on, stop what you’re doing and make your mind a blank. If possible, actually tell yourself to “STOP!” This will get your mind off the stress. Then think of being at a place of comfort and let your body relax. As you continue the test, find questions you know the answers to and answer them first. This will help restore your confidence.
Important of all, talk to yourself using positive languages. Make it a habit to replace each negative thought with a logical reason. For example: “I've studied hard and I know the material, so I'm ready to do the best I can.”
Another thing you can do is to learn to accept mistakes. In fact, they can be valuable learning opportunities.
Last but not least, start test preparation early-three to five days ahead of the quiz or test. After all, good study habits and skills-for example, time management and notetaking will give you the feeling that you are in control.

〔1〕My mother always told us there is no use crying over spilled milk. That means you should not get angry when something bad happens and cannot be changed. She also told us you have to break some eggs to make an omelet(煎蛋卷). This means you have to do what is necessary to move forward.
〔2〕My mother believed you are what you eat. A good diet is important for good health. She would always give us nutritious food. She liked serving us meat and potatoes for dinner. Meat and potatoes can also mean the most important part of something. It describes someone who likes simple things.
〔3〕My father was also a good and honest person. People said he was the salt of the earth, because he would never pour salt on a wound, or make someone feel worse about something that was already a painful experience. However, sometimes he told us a story that seemed bigger than life. So we had to take it with a grain of salt. That is, we could not believe everything he told us.
〔4〕My manager at work does not always know what is going on in our office. Yet she is right about one thing: there is no such thing as a free lunch. Something may appear to be free, but there may be a hidden cost. When we fail to see problems at work, my manager tells us to wake up and smell the coffee. We need to pay more attention and fix the problem. I once made a big mistake at the office and felt foolish. I had egg on my face.
〔5〕Over the weekend, my friend invited me to watch a football game on television. But I do not like football. It is not my cup of tea.

[1]Oops! In your rush to get to school, you drop a piece of toast on the floor. Do you throw it away or decide it’s still OK to eat? If you’re like most people, you eat it. Maybe you follow the “5-second rule”, which claims foods are safe to eat,if you pick them up within 5 seconds of dropping them. But you might want to think again. Scientists now say that 5 seconds are all it takes for foods to become contaminated with enough bacteria to make you sick.
[2]Bacteria can cause many kinds of illnesses. Some kinds of bacteria can grow on food. If we eat foods on which these bacteria are growing, we can become sick. One of these food-borne bacteria is Salmonella. It makes 1.4 million people sick every year. Earlier this year, 370 people became sick after eating peanut butter that had been contaminated with Salmonella at the manufacturing factory. Salmonella are often found in raw eggs and chicken. Cooking kills these bacteria, which is why it is so important to cook eggs, chicken, and other foods carefully.
[3]Being a good housekeeper is another good way to prevent infection. If household surfaces aren’t washed thoroughly, they can support Salmonella for weeks. A team of scientists at Clemson University in South Carolina have tested the 5-second rule, using sandwich ingredients. First, they placed a known amount of Salmonella cells on three surfaces: wood, tile, and carpet. They then placed a slice of bread and a slice of bologna(博洛尼亚大红肠) on each surface for 5, 30, or 60 seconds. After just 5 seconds, both the bread and bologna picked up enough bacteria to make you sick.
[4]So forget the 5-second rule. If your toast lands on the floor, throw it away. Stick a fresh slice of bread in the toaster. And this time, be careful not to drop it!

As we enjoy the summer ocean waves along the beaches,we may think nervously about Steven Spielberg’s Jaws and the great fear that sharks inspire in us.Yet we are happy to see global efforts to protect the declining number of sharks. The world has realized that we need the species, like sharks, to keep a balanced ecosystem.
Sharks,in particular, are“in’’these days. Thanks to good public policy and famous stars such as Jackie Chan and Ang Lee,killing sharks for fin soup is no longer cool.
The demand for shark fins has been rising for decades, threatening sharks with extinction(灭绝)-up to 100 million sharks are killed each year just for their fins. But we have started to reverse the trend, particularly in many areas of the United States and overseas where restaurants once proudly provided delicious shark fins on the menu.
In California,a ban on the sale and possession of shark fin soup has gone into effect this year through the efforts of Wild Aid and other organizations.
Overseas marketing and public efforts featuring posters on public transportation systems and TV ads have been underway for the past few years. These efforts all show signs of success, on both the supply side and the demand side of trade in shark fins.
Actually, stopping the killing of sharks is part of a broader movement to stop the killing of wild animals and the buying and selling of wildlife products. These products come from hunting elephants, tigers and rhinos, besides killing marine life.
Whether it is shark fin soup or ivory piano keys, killing animals is big business. The hunting of elephants in search of ivory tusks for luxury(奢侈的)goods has become a fall-scale war.The decrease of African elephant populations is alarming. Together with international partners, the United States is leading the worldwide effort to reduce demand for high-end products that rely on killing animals.

It is natural on every student to remember the first day at school. It was my mother who first thought of sending me to school. Of course I was of the school-going age. When my mother told me that , I thought that she was a heartless woman. My mind was disturbed ( 弄乱 ) at first.. Although I had heard about school, I had not visited it earlier.
It gave me a terrible feeling of fear and anxiety as I went to school with my father. My father took me to school which was an unknown place for me.Teachers and students were strangers to me. When I entered the school, I felt nervous. It was a big building and it was calm and quiet.
It was an old and famous school in our area. My father was a student there in his childhood and youth. The headmaster was well known to my father and welcomed him with a smile. My father introduced me to the headmaster and the headmaster allowed me to attend the class. My father left me in the classroom and went away. I was about to cry.
However, the kind behavior of the headmaster and the class teacher calmed me down. The class teacher asked my name and some other questions and he patted me on the back.
After three classes there was a rest for half an hour. I rushed to the playground along with my classmates. That day I met Sandeep who became my best friend later on. The classes came to an end about 4 pm. I was not willing to return from school.
The memory of my first day at school is very pleasant and I won’t forget it forever. I feel proud when I describe it to others.

In the animal kingdom, weakness can bring about attack from other animals. This sometimes happens to humans, too. But I have found that my weakness brings out the kindness in people. I see it every day when people hold doors for me, pour cream into my coffee, or help me to put on my coat. And I have found that it makes them happy.
From my wheelchair experience, I see the best in people. Often, we try every way to avoid showing our weakness, which includes a lot of pretending. But when we stop pretending we’re strong, people around us will show their kindness.
Last month, when I was driving home on a busy highway, I suddenly felt sick and drove very slowly. People behind me began to speed, horn(鸣喇叭) or even shout at me. At the moment I decided to do something. I put on the car flashlight.
No more angry shouts and no more horns! I knew when I put on my flashlights, I was saying to other drivers, “I have a problem here. I have already done my best.” Several times, I saw drivers who wanted to pass. They could not get around me because of the stream of passing traffic. But instead of getting impatient and angry, they waited, knowing the drivers in front of them was in some way weak.
Sometimes situations call for us to act strong and brave even when we don’t feel that way. But those seldom happen. More often, it would be better if we don’t pretend we feel strong when we actually feel weak.

[1]Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. However, you can receive better grades if you want. Yes, even students with average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here’s how:
[2]Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule of your time. Be sure to set aside enough time to complete your normal reading and work assignments. Of course, studying shouldn’t occupy all of the free time on the schedule.
[3]Make good use of your time in class. Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.
[4]Skim before you read. Look over a passage quickly before you begin to read it more carefully. As you preview the material, you get some idea of the content and how it is organized. Later when you begin to read you will recognize less important material and you may skip some of these portions. Skimming helps double your reading speed and improve you comprehension as well.
[5]_____. Go over your notes as soon as you can after class. Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused. If you know what the teacher will discuss the next day, skim and read that material, too. If you review your notes and textbook regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular review leads to improved performance on tests.

Poverty today is a major global issue. Although there are all kinds of definitions used to explain it, in simple words, it means the inability of a person to even get his basic needs of food, shelter, clothing, safe drinking water, health and education. Poverty can be found in each and every corner of the world, although the causes may differ from country to country. Given below are the main causes of poverty in the world today.
Overpopulation is one of the main causes behind the threatening of poverty on an individual level as well as a social level. This is simple math: If there are more mouths to feed and less income, definitely much will remain poor.
Another theory which is used as an explanation for poverty is lack of education. If you look at any of the underdeveloped countries, you will find that the level of education there is very low. Lack of education means lack of employment opportunities, thus leading to unemployment coupled with poverty in the future.
Moving away from one’s own homeland to another city or country in search of employment leads to poverty too. It may take these people a lot of time to find jobs. Meanwhile, they live in bad conditions. The cost of living in the city or country is most of the time too high for them.
There may be other causes of poverty like the change in business. For example, in America, a couple of decades ago, heavy industry flourished ,which employed a lot of African-American people. But now, the focus is more on information technology and health care, both of which employ only skilled and trained people. This has led to unemployment among African-Americans.
Poverty has many ill effects on society. That’s why steps should be taken to get rid of it!

[1] I was walking home from school one day and it happened to be a particularly cold and windy day. It was freezing and I was crazy enough to forget my hats and gloves. You can imagine my cheeks were rosy red and my hands were as numb as they can be.
[2] All of a sudden, an old lady drove up beside me and asked if I would like a ride home. At first I said it was No, but she persisted (坚持) and her warm smile melted away the thought that my parents had often told me never to talk with strangers! We had an amazing chat and she had just such a sweetheart. She told me her address and she dropped me off.
[3] I didn’t see her or talk to her for about a month and one night remembering her kind gesture, I decided to return the favor. So I made a lot of cookies and walked down to her house with my friend. At first I was a bit worried she would not remember me or think that I was a psycho (精神病患者) who poisoned cookies, but luckily, I was completely wrong. She was so happy, and she hugged me and kissed me and seemed so shocked that anyone would do something like that!
[4] When I got home my mom informed me that she called and told my mom that she cried because she was so touched. She said she would never forget the kindness that was given to her! That filled me with such joy! There really is nothing else like helping others and making someone’s day brighter!

Many people run after goals that they hope will make them happy, but happiness is not always the final result. So how does one decide which goals will end in personal happiness and which will not?How do the things in life affect personal happiness?
The most important thing is people’s attitude toward life, which can greatly affect their personal levels of happiness and satisfaction with life.
Psychologists have known for some time that optimism is a good way to fight against unhappiness. It’s probably no secret that optimistic people are considered to be much happier people than pessimists. There are specific characteristic features optimists have (pleasant ways of thinking),that bring them more success, greater health, increased life satisfaction, and other good things. If you became an optimist,it can mean that you became a very happy person, despite your circumstances, and it can actually bring more things into your life to be happy about.“If you are optimistic and you think life is going to get better,it will become a selffulfillment prediction.” says one of the scientists.“Happy people manage to look on the bright side, even if they meet big problems on their way.”
Positive psychologists believe that people can learn how to become happy and that everyone can teach themselves to see a half empty glass as half full. All they have to do is to spend time thinking about all the things that have gone right for them, rather than complaining what has gone badly. But people who are depressed usually think and worry about something that went wrong in the past.

At least 36 people have been killed and another 42 people have been injured in a stampede that broke out during a New Year Eve celebration in downtown Shanghai, which may have been caused by the crowd rushing to grab fake money thrown from the balcony of a building.
Survivors described the stampede as "horrible and hellish."
A woman said she covered two kids in front of her with her arms in the chaos. Her son followed her.Dirty shoe prints covered her son's clothes when the 12 year old boy came to safety.
"The crowd was in a panic. We stood in the crowd, feeling squeezed and almost out of breath," a boy said."Some yelled for help, but the noise was too loud."
Other survivors said police rushed to the scene and tried to pull out people who were stuck, but without much success.
The local authorities said that one of the victims was a female student from the Shanghai based Fudan University. The student, surnamed Du from Yunnan Province, was fatally injured during the incident and died later in the hospital.
"The chaos lasted several minutes, and then some of the injured were seen being carried out of the crowd," Yu said.
Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday demanded an immediate investigation into the cause of the stampede and urged prevention of such incidents in the future.
The city has set up a working team for rescue operations to deal with the aftermath.
Fatal incidents like this one were not rare in China, the world's most populous country.Stampedes in the past were mainly due to safety measures.
In September 2014, six students were killed in a stampede at a primary school in Yunnan Province after a stairway was blocked. In January 2014, a mosque(清真寺) stampede killed 14 people and injured another 10 in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region. In 2004, a stampede on a bridge in suburban Beijing killed 37 during a local lantern festival.

There were smiling children all the way. Clearly they knew at what time the train passed their homes and they made it their business to stand along the railway, wave to complete strangers and cheer them up as they rushed towards Penang. Often whole families stood outside their homes and waved and smiled as if those on the trains were their favorite relatives. This is the simple village people of Malaysia. I was moved.
I had always traveled to Malaysia by plane or car, so this was the first time I was on a train. I did not particularly enjoy the long train journey and had brought along a dozen magazines to read and reread. I looked about the train. There was not one familiar face. I sighed and sat down to read my Economics.
It was not long before the train was across the Causeway and in Malaysia. Johore Baru was just another city like Singapore, so I was tired of looking at the crowds of people as they hurried past. As we went beyond the city, I watched the straight rows of rubber trees and miles and miles of green. Then the first village came into sight. Immediately I came alive; I decided to wave back.
From then on my journey became interesting. I threw my magazines into the waste basket and decided to join in Malaysian life. Then everything came alive. The mountains seemed to speak to me. Even the trees were smiling. I stared at everything as if I was looking at it for the first time.
The day passed fast and I even forgot to have my lunch until I felt hungry. I looked at my watch and was surprised that it was 3:00 pm. Soon the train pulled up at Butterworth. I looked at the people all around me. They all looked beautiful. When my uncle arrived with a smile, I threw my arms around him to give him a warm hug(拥抱). I had never done this before. He seemed surprised and then his weather-beaten face warmed up with a huge smile. We walked arm in arm to his car.
I looked forward to the return journey.

Why do young adult children become independent so much later than they did in 1970, when the average age of independent living was 21? Why have reduced class sizes and increased per-pupil expenditures(花销) not resulted in higher academic achievement levels? Why is the mental health of today's kids so poor when compared with that of children in the 1960s and before? Why do today's parents become defensive when told by teachers that their children have misbehaved in school?
The best answer is that parents play a different role in children’s growth, which also summarize the differences between “old” child raising and new, post-1960s parenting. Then, the overall philosophy was that parents were not to be highly involved with their kids. They were available in case of crisis, but they stood a (an) safe distance from their kids and allowed them to experience the benefits of the trial-and-error process. It was the child's job, back then, to keep his or her parents from getting involved. That was how children learned to be responsible and determined.
Today's parents help their kids with almost everything. These are parents who are confused when it comes to an understanding of their purpose in their kids' lives. Their involvement leads them to personalize everything that happens to their kids; thus the defensiveness. But given that schools and mental health professionals have been pushing parental involvement for nearly four decades, the confusion and defensiveness are understandable.
University researchers analyzed three decades of data relating to parental participation in children's academics. Their conclusions confirmed what I've been saying since the 1980s: parental help with homework lowers a child's academic achievements and is not reflected on standardized tests.
Parents who manage a child's social life interfere with the development of good social skills. Parents who manage a child's after-school activities grow kids who don't know how to fill their own free time. Parents who get involved in their kids’ conflicts with peers grow kids who don't know how to avoid much less trouble.
These kids have anxieties and fears of all sorts and don't want to leave their home. And their parents, when the time comes, don't know how to stop being parents. You can imagine what will become of their future.

My friend, Emma Daniels, spent the summer of 1974 traveling in Israel. During her month-long stay in Jerusalem she often went to a café called Chocolate Soup. It was run by two men, one of whom—Alex—used to live in Montreal. One morning when Emma went in for coffee, while chatting with her new friend Alex, she mentioned that she had just finished the book she was reading and had nothing else to read. Alex said he had a wonderful book she might like, and that he’d be happy to lend it to her. As he lived just above the café, he quickly ran up to get it. The book he handed to Emma just minutes later was Markings, a book by a former Secretary—General of the United Nations (UN).
Emma had never read it, nor had she ever bought a copy. But , when she opened it up, she was floored to see her own name and address inside the cover in her own handwriting.
