Parent involvement is critical in helping with children’s development and achievement and in preventing and correcting educational and developmental problems.
The degree to which American parents are involved in their children’s schools is often surprising to people of other countries. Most schools have organizations consisting of both parents and teachers (usually called P.T.A from the initials of the “Parent-Teacher Association”). They meet together regularly to discuss and consult on various matters related to the school-curriculum, budgets, faculty, salaries, libraries facilities, or whatever it may be.
Mothers often volunteer to help with classroom or after-school activities. They sometimes make costumes for plays or play the piano or assist a teacher on a class field trip. Some of them give regular time, under the direction of the teacher, in working with tutoring children in the classroom.
In good schools a real effort is made to have both the home and the school work together for the child’s well-being. You will generally find teachers eager to talk with you about any problems concerning your child-although the larger the school, the less likely this is to happen. When the size permits, there are often scheduled appointments so that parents can meet privately with one or more of their child’s teachers to discuss his particular problems or progress. You will be sent notices of meetings or programs to which you are invited.
Both mothers and father are expected to attend such meetings and to show their interest in the school. You may be invited to a “Parents’ Day”, where you follow a child’s schedule through a full day of classes. This is inspiring and enjoyable for most parents.
School activities provide a good way to meet your neighbors and to make friends in the community. Since Americans enjoy meeting people from other countries, you will probably find your national background a help rather than a disadvantage in getting to know others. This is true even if you are having trouble with the language.
Successful parent involvement benefits parents, children and teachers and, therefore, has significant influence on children’s education.

Big storms. High waves. Technical failures. Loneliness. After battling hard times and danger for over nine months, British teenager Mike Perham made history last month as the youngest person to sail solo around the world.
The 17-year-old made the record after he cleared the Panama Canal and then sailed through the Caribbean and home across the Atlantic.
Mike is only three months younger than Zac Sunderland, the 17-year-old American boy who had taken the crown as the youngest solo around-the-world sailor in July.
The two youngsters met in Cape Town in South Africa as they crossed the globe in different directions. Mike insisted they were not rival. “No. It’s two teenagers going out there, living their dream and having the adventure of a life time.” he said.
Mike may be young, but he is no stranger to sailing adventures. He picked up the hobby at age 6 when his father took him out in a small boat on a local lake. Father and son sailed separate boats across the Atlantic when Mike was 14, making him the youngest person to cross that ocean solo. That record gave him the taste for this even greater challenge.
On the recent journey, the scariest moment for Mike came when his sailboat was hit by storms in the southern Indian Ocean.
“We were picked up by what felt like a 60-foot wave and threw down on our side at 90 degrees,” he said.
“It felt like I was going right over. Stuff was flying around and I just thought ‘Oh no’.”
At other times, he had to dive into the Pacific and fix problems. He tied himself to the boat, jumped into the water and went to work with a knife in 30-second dives underneath the boat to cut a rope away.
Mike said he felt proud that he made his dream come true. “You’ve got to have confidence in yourself that you will make it,” he said.

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessarily so, however. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. Here is how.
Plan your time carefully. When planning your week, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making the list, you should make a schedule of your time. First, arrange your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide a good, regular time for studying. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment. A weekly plan may not solve all the problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this place, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios or TV! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class. Take advantage of class time to listen to everything the teacher says. Listening in class carefully means less work later. Taking class notes will help you remember what the teacher says.
Study regularly. When you get home from school, go over your notes. Review the important points that your teacher has mentioned in class. If you know what your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read the material. This will help you understand the next class. If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude towards the tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. It helps you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be overly worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your study. You will probably discover many others after you have tried these.

My father was 44 and knew he wasn't going to make it to 45. He wrote me a letter and hoped that something in it would help me for the rest of my life.
Since the day I was 12 and first read his letter, some of his words have lived in my heart. One part always stands out. “Right now, you are pretending to be a time-killer. But I know that one day, you will do something great that will set you among the very best.”Knowing that my dad believed in me gave me permission to believe in myself. “You will do something great.” He didn’t know what that would be, and neither did I, but at times in my life when I’ve felt proud of myself, I remember his words and wish he were here so I could ask, “Is this what you were talking about, Dad? Should I keep going?”
A long way from 12 now, I realize he would have been proud when I made any progress.
Lately, though, I’ve come to believe he'd want me to move on to what come next: to be proud of and believe in, somebody else. It's time to start writing my own letters to my children. As mothers, our children look to us with the same unanswered question we had. Our kids don’t give up because they’re afraid to fail. They’re only afraid of failing us. They don’t worry about being disappointed. Their fear-as mine was until my father’s letter-is of being a disappointment.
Give your children permission to succeed. They’re waiting for you to believe in them. I always knew my parents loved me. But trust me: That belief will be more complete, that love will be more real, and their belief in themselves will be greater if you write the words on their hearts: “Don’t worry; you’ll do something great.” Not having that blessing from their parents may be the only thing holding them back.

Lacrosse, invented by the Native Americans, is a popular team sport in North America and a national summer sport for Canada. It involves the use of nets, or ”heads” as they are called, which consist of a wooden or metal stick with a net on the end. Hockey is a game based on this sport.
The name “lacrosse” was named by the French settlers ,with “Crosse” meaning curved stick. Lacrosse played a more serious role in Indian culture than anywhere else. Lacrosse was not a very well known sport until the late nineteenth century. It was mostly a boy’s game until a few years ago, and now it is played by both boys and girls.
There were about three different forms of lacrosse based on the different tribes or places of how they played it. One of the ways still played today is called double stick; you play by using a two and a half foot stick in each hand and tossing a deer skin ball in between the two sticks.
Like many other ball games, there are two teams in Lacrosse, each with ten players. There is one goalie, three defensemen, three midfielders and three attack-men. The goalies defend the goals, and if the ball goes into the goal, the team who got the goal scores. Whoever scores the most goals by the end of the game wins, with an overtime period being played if the game is tied. The game has four quarters and starts with a "faceoff” at the beginning of each quarter. A faceoff is when the ball is on the ground to start the game, and one person from each team fights for the ball.

My grandfather was a wonderful gardener. As long as I could remember, he had grown a garden full of vegetables in the back of his yard. He grew different kinds of vegetables. One year he even tried pumpkins. The pumpkins did turn out well.
As children, my sister and I would spend time looking after the garden with him. We would learn about planting seeds. My grandfather would show us how the beans would climb up the fence and he built up beyond the fence to let them climb even higher. I was always surprised to see them grow even taller than me.
The pride of my grandfather’s garden was his tomatoes. Every year as soon as the tomato bloomed, I would ask my grandfather when we could eat the tomatoes. He would say, “ Not yet.”
I would ask the next week, “Can we pick them yet?”
He would answer, “Not yet.”
Finally , I would be sure that they were ripe. When so many bright red tomatoes hung on the branches, I would go up to my grandfather and ask, “ Can we pick them now?”
He enjoyed seeing my sister and I eat the tomatoes. I think the garden was my grandfather’s way of sharing his blessing with those around him. The garden always had more than enough produce for my grandparents and for my family, so he would give some to anyone who would accept. He hoped we could pass his generosity to others.
As he grew older, I would look after the garden for him. My grandfather never expected me to do all of it for him, but I could always see the pride on his face when everything was complete.

With a good shopping position and the right amount of money, any educated person ought to be able to make a living out of a bookshop. It is not a difficult trade to learn and the large chain-stores can never force the small bookseller out of existence as they have done to the corner shop. But the hours of work are very long---I was only doing a part-time job, but my boss put in a seventy---hour week, besides regular journeys out of shopping hours to buy books.
The real reason why I should not like to be back in the book trade for life, however, is that while I was in it I lost my love of books. A bookseller cannot always tell the truth about his books, and that gives him a dislike for them. There was a time when I really did love books---loved the sight and smell and feel of them---if they were fifty or more years old, that is. Nothing pleased me quite so much as to buy a bargain lot of them on sale for several pounds. There is a peculiar flavour(独特的味道)about the unexpected books you pick up in that kind of collection: little-known eighteenth-century poets, or out-of-date geography books. For occasional reading---in your bath, for example, or late at night when you are too tired to go to bed---there is nothing as good as a very old picture story-book.
But as soon as I went to work in the bookshop I stopped buying books. Seen in a mass, five or ten thousand at a time, books were dull and even a little tiresome. Nowadays I do buy one occasionally, but only if it is a book that I want to read and can’t be borrowed easily, and I never buy rubbish.

The word addiction usually makes you think of alcohol or drugs, but in modern-day society we are seeing some new kinds of addictions. Some people are compulsive(难以自制的) shoppers. Others find it impossible to pull themselves away from their work. Still others spend countless hours watching TV or playing computer games
Over the years, shopping has become a very common activity. Many people enjoy going to malls or stores more and more every day, but it's more than a common hobby for some of them. They have turned into shopaholics. They are people who simply enjoy shopping and walking around spending money without being able to stop doing it. They are hooked on shopping and usually buy things that they don't need. Even though they don't have enough money, they buy everything they want.
The question is: why do they have this addiction? There isn't a specific answer. Some people go shopping when they are sad, worried, upset or lonely and they want to feel better. They use this activity as a way to forget their problems. Shopaholics say that they feel more important and better after they buy something. They also tend to have this addiction when they feel guilty.
Shopaholism seems to be a harmless addiction, but it can ___________. Some of them can be psychological. If this is the case, people addicted to shopping should go to a support group to help them break this habit. However, the process, like for most addictions, is long, and they suffer a lot. It can also cause financial problems. They just think about satisfying their feelings, so they spend money they don't have. They get deep in debt, and they can even go bankrupt and get sent to prison.

When Steve Jobs was born on Febuary24,1955, in San Francisco , California, his unmarried mother decided to put him for adoption(收养)because she wanted a girl. So in the middle of the night, his mother called a lawyer named Paul Jobs and said, “We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?” But his mother told his future parents to promise that they would send Jobs to college. After Steve Jobs graduated from high school, he went to college but only after six months did he decide to drop out because it was so expensive that he had to sleep on the floor in his friends’ rooms.
Jobs and a friend(Steve Wozniak) started a company in a garage on April 1, 1976. He named their company ----Apple in memory of a happy summer he had spent as a fruit garden in Oregon.
After 10 years of hard time and failures, starting from two kids working in a garage, Apple computer eventually grew into a big company with over 4000 employees.
At 30, Jobs , however, was fired from the company he co-founded. But after he had to leave the company, Apple was under heavy pressure from competitor Microsoft and suffered heavy losses. Apple needed Steve Jobs and he was appointed as Apple’ CEO in1997. Under his leadership, Apple returned to profitability(盈利) and introduced new products such as the IPod, the IPhone and the IPad.
Steve Jobs once said, “Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don’t be discouraged. I’m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You’ve got to find your interest. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking.”

Students in Finland won’t have to study subjects. Soon, their classrooms would resemble conferences where “topics” are discussed.
The education system in Finland is about to undergo a revolutionary and fundamental change, although it enjoys the reputation of being one of the best in the world. The education department has decided to abandon the old method of “teaching by subject.” Instead, the country will now involve the children to help them learn and question by evolving to “teaching by topic”, shared Liisa Pohjolainen, who is in charge of youth and adult education in Helsinki – the capital city leading the reform program, “This is going to be a big change in education in Finland that we’re just beginning.”
The education system, though appearing to be revolutionary, is quite logical, explained Pasi Silander, the city’s development manager, “What we need now is a different kind of education to prepare people for working life. Young people use quite advanced computers. In the past the banks had lots of bank clerks adding up figures but now that has totally changed. We therefore have to make the changes in education that are necessary for industry and modern society.”
How does Finland plan to apply the method of teaching by topic? Evidently all-round vocational training and accumulated skill development take up priority over “lessons.” Those in their late teens are already being engaged in what Finland refers to as “phenomenon teaching” – or teaching by topic. For example, “cafeteria services” lessons will include elements of finance, languages (to help serve foreign customers), writing skills and communication skills.
Students will slowly be taught cross-subject topics which would have varying elements of multiple “subjects.” These elements will vary with the “topic” or “skill” the student is learning. Apart from the same, students will move away from the traditional sitting and evaluation techniques as well. Students will sit in smaller groups and work collectively to solve problems, all the while improving upon their communication skills. They won’t be made to sit in rows and asked questions individually to assess their progress. Instead, a group whose collaborative efforts bring out results faster will be promoted.
The education system needs a thorough reform, owing to the fact that traditional teaching techniques were based on traditional tools that were quite limited in availability and accessibility. With modern world being extensively connected, isn’t it time for the students to learn how to step ahead of mere fact-based learning that promotes memory expansion rather than mental development?
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN TEN WORDS.)
Finland is launching its education reform by _________.
What’s the purpose of Finland’s education reform?
What are two of the main features of “teaching by topic”?
Finland decides to reform its education because traditional teaching _________.

To build an incredible and successful relationship is something like erecting a building. First of all, you should start with the idea of building such a relationship, and then you can put a solid foundation stone for that idea. Putting a strong foundation stone is very important and it keeps your building steady. Every part of that building is totally depending upon that solid foundation.
So, here are the three rules to establish a successful relationship:
The first rule is just having fun. Once relationship is established then the things become stable. Once it gets stable then you start feeling stifled (压抑的) and fun is no longer there in your relationship. But remember this thing is very dangerous for relationship. You can plan something great like a weekend road trip. Even you can also plan some of your favorite activities at least twice a month. Enjoy laughing with each other and try to find different ways to keep this laughter alive.
The second rule is giving respect to each other equally. In relationship it is important that both the partners should deserve equal treatment. If anyone of the partners dominates to the other then such relationship is surely not going to survive for a long time. Such relationships are called unbalanced relationship and it is going to give lots of pain. So, try to give respect to each other equally.
The third rule is always to be open and honest with each other. Another good and important part of any relationship is being honest and open-minded with your partner. Whenever the problem arises in your relations, honesty is very crucial. Even being open-minded with each other is a foundation to your good relationship. Honesty is a most valuable thing. ________________, then problems can be very easily sorted out.

When the musical sound rings out, you immediately reach for your pocket ready to have a chat. But although you probably use it all the time, have you ever stopped to think about the manners related to talking on the phone?
If you haven’t, here are some tips to guide you.
Always give the person you are calling plenty of time to get to the phone before you hang up. If the person who answers is not the one you want, give your name and ask if you may speak to the person you want.
Think about the time you call people. Try not to call too early in the morning or too late at night. Also try not to call at mealtimes.
If you go by plane to visit your relatives at Christmas, remember to follow airline instructions. Cellphones must be turned off as soon as the plane doors are closed and remain so until the doors open again on arrival.
When face-to-face with someone, do not talk on the phone. It is rude to be on the phone when a waiter is trying to take your order in a restaurant, or when you are returning the shoes you have just been trying on in a shop. Finish any face-to-face business before taking a call. Continuing to use the phone while nodding to the person in front of you is quite impolite.
When in a restaurant with your friends, keep phone conversations short. Make a call only if it is important. Practise speaking in a low voice. If no one looks your way, you’ve got it.
If you go to a theatre, a concert or a cinema, consider the other people around you. Check that your phone is “off” before you enter. If you are expecting a very important call, put your phone on “vibrate” (振动) and run for the exit as soon as you feel it. If you forget both “off’’ and “vibrate” and_________________, don’t answer it, turn it off straight away.

Two weeks ago, I had a quarrel with my husband .After he had driven off in anger; I realized that I wasn’t going to feel any better just sitting there. Feeling abandoned and guilty, I put on my gym shoes to get some fresh air.
Our driveway has a slope(斜坡) that is easier just to jog down if you are lazy, taking advantage of gravity. Instead of stopping at the end of the slope, I decided to see if I could just jog to the end of the street. I had tried a few months ago and failed miserably. Since that first attempt I had been jogging regularly and was significantly fitter, but still very lazy. However this time around I managed to reach the stop sign with ease and I figured I would go a little further.
After about one kilometer, however, I noticed that my upper body was tense. To make the movement easier I had to relax my body, and tried to take deep breaths of fresh air.
I kept giving myself the excuse to stop. No one would be disappointed. No one would even know. But I didn’t stop. I wanted to keep going harder, better, faster, stronger. To my great surprise, I ran 4.9 km in 31 minutes. When I got back, I had tears in my eyes. I did something I thought I could never do.
It was the first long run of my life. Since then, I have improved my stride(步幅) and time. After every run I feel fitter, happier and motivated to keep progressing. I love the runner’s high. I normally jog because I want to look good. I want to run because it makes me feel good.

[1] Safety in the highway is not totally out of hand. Here are four ways you can protect yourselves when you travel.
[2] You are safer in a large car. People in small cars are injured more often and more severely than people traveling in large cars. Factories of small cars are strengthening their products’ safety, which helps. But the mix of large cars and small cars on the road is the main reason for the safety problem.
[3] Being thrown into glass and metal parts of a car--or being thrown from the car--can really damage you. That’s why safety belts should be worn. The safety belt’s main purpose is to pull you back. If your car has a sudden crash with another vehicle or object or if it rolls over, a belt can reduce the chance of fatal injury by 45% and the chance of serious injury by 50%.
[4] _______________________. More than half of all new cars sold have air bags. Air bags provide protection in frontal crashes--the type of crash that kills the most drivers, though they are also wearing safety belts. Most people demand air bags in the cars they buy. But the protection provided by air bags is limited in side or rear crashes; effective as they are, they can’t take the place of safety belts.
[5] Drunk driving crashes are less likely to happen if you don’t drink. Drunk driving is the most serious problem. Many people have realized that mixing drinking and driving can lead to death and injury, prison time and other results. There are measures to strengthen penalties (处罚) for drinking and driving.
