Some people live in the world for body while others for dignity(尊严).
I once took a walk along the street a Saturday dusk, with a Pepsi can in my hand. An old woman in ragged clothes, was living on collecting used cans, jars and tins, moved slowly towards me, with a bag on the back! (walk) nearer, she looked up at me and then fixed her eyes on my can. At that time, I hadn’t finished my cola, so I gave several coins instead.
She stared at me for a few seconds handed back the money. Quite confused, I asked: “Why not? Isn’t that you want?”
“I am not a beggar,” she said (serious), word by word.
Instantly, I felt so sorry. I had intended (help) her, completely misunderstanding her. Thus I hurt her. What I could do at that moment was only to drink up the cola and handed her emptied can. This time, she gave me a smile with (satisfy) and gratitude in her eyes. The woman is poor in material life but is so respectable as a man. I am not only moved but also have learned a good lesson.

Goal setting is simply having a clear plan of where you want to be in the future. In order to set goals, you must first know where you want to be in the future, or you must have some kind of a dream, something that you really want.
How to set a goal needs a lot of thought about what you really want to do in your life. Take some time by asking yourself about the reason behind your goal. If you are struggling to find direction, then learn to set goals.
Set goals that you can achieve. Divide them into simple tasks that you can achieve every day, every month, every year. Set your goals for success. Often people fail to achieve their dreams, not for lack of hard work and motivation, but simply because they failed to define(界定)their dreams and goals in a way that allowed them to effectively move toward their goals.
Here are some other important points to consider when setting a goal. The goal should be clear enough so that we know exactly what we are struggling for and when the goal has been reached. It should be realistic, that is to say, it is practical and can be achieved. Moreover, it should have necessary resources and a deadline for completion.
Goal setting helps us get organized, make big decisions and realize our dreams. Goals will take you to places you’ve only dreamed of. They’ll help you achieve your life’s dreams. They will give you confidence. And most of all, they’ll motivate you to keep on trying. So just like any other tool, you must know how to properly use goal setting so that you’ll be successful in achieving your dreams.

Celebrating sleep
World Sleep Day, observed (庆祝)on 21 March, was created to bring attention to the growing number of sleep problems worldwide. Sleep is a natural part of human life, but many people in the modern world ignore its importance. As a result, sleep problems are increasingly common.
In 2002, scientists at the University of Athens in Greece conducted a survey of over 35,000 people in 10 countries around the world, including China, Belgium and South Africa. Of the people, 24 percent said that they did not sleep well, and based on their responses, 31.6 percent were diagnosed (诊断)with insomnia(失眠)and another 17.5 percent were diagnosed with borderline insomnia. In addition, 30.7 percent of survey respondents reported visiting a doctor for help with sleep problems and 11.6 percent said that they felt very sleepy during the day.
Overall, the survey found that many people suffer the effects of poor quality sleep, some examples of which are being unable to fall asleep and waking up in the middle of the night. The main factors causing these problems are pressure from school or work and a fast pace of life, but noise pollution and light pollution also disturb sleep and contribute to poor quality sleep. The survey’s findings are particularly troubling because large numbers of people were found to have difficulty sleeping at night. The short-term effects of this are tiredness and trouble concentrating(专心). If this happens for a long time, the risk of putting on weight and having a heart attack may increase.
There are many things you can do to improve the quality of your sleep. First, you should have regular sleep habits. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time each day. You also need to make your bedroom a cool, dark, quiet place to sleep so that heat, light and noise do not disturb you. At night, you should also avoid things that contain caffeine(咖啡因), such as chocolate, coffee, tea and many soft drinks, as caffeine may keep you from sleeping.
Getting a good night’s sleep is important for everyone. By following the advice above, you can rest better at night and work better during the day.

[1] The year 2008 has one extra day in it--February 29th, why does this happen? Well, it actually takes the planet Earth a little more than 365 days to revolve completely around the sun. After four years an extra 24 hours have accumulated so an extra day is added to the calendar.
[2] It is called a leap year because hundreds of years ago in England, the extra day wasn't legally recognized. The British just leapt over that day. Therefore a year with 29 days in February is consequently called a leap year and that . If you are born on 29th February in a leap year, there are difficulties in celebrating your birthday. So people tend to celebrate on either 28th February or 1st March every year.
[3] There is a well-known tradition in the UK associated with 29th February, introduced many centuries ago. Women are allowed to break with tradition and propose (求婚) to their boyfriends on this day. This all started back in the 5th Century, when a famous Irish saint, Bridget, complained to Saint Patrick, another famous Irish saint, that women had to wait too long for men to propose. According to the legend, Saint Patrick said any female longing for a proposal could ask their boyfriend to marry them on this additional day in February.
[4] Now in 2008, there are calls for 29th February to become a public holiday. Some people believe that it should be an official day off, because no one gets paid for working in a leap day. For the moment though, the British still have to go to work on this day.

A conflict at work is common. If you can avoid conflict, it means you will win what you want regardless of what the other person wants. Since the potential issue has not been removed, it will simply reappear later. Here are the necessary steps to effectively get rid of conflicts at work.
★Be aware of the fact that some conflicts are unavoidable at work. On numerous occasions, conflict and disagreement are likely to happen. But when a conflict happens it’s not the end of the world. On the contrary, it can be the beginning of an interesting learning process. Conflicts mean that people care enough to disagree strongly. The trick is not to allow the conflict to go on forever.
★ Deal with conflicts sooner rather than later. Solve a conflict when it starts, as it only gets worse with time going by. Conflicts at work arise not from something that was said, but from something that wasn’t said! Everyone’s waiting for the other to admit he’s wrong and gets more unpleasant after the conflict has lasted a while. It’s essential to interrupt the "waiting game" before it gets to that point.
★ Ask nicely. If somebody has done something that made you angry, or if you don’t understand their viewpoint or actions, simply asking nicely about it can make a world of difference. Never assume that people do what they do to annoy or hurt you. Sometimes there’s a good reason why that person does what he or she does, and a potential conflict disappear right there. Do remember to make an inquiry, not an accusation of any sort.
★ Appreciate. Praise the other part in the conflict. Tell them why it’s worth it to you to solve the conflict. This can be difficult as few people find it easy to praise and appreciate a person they disagree strongly with, but it’s a great way to move forward.

Many people think a telephone is a necessity. But I think it is a pest (有害的事物) and a time waste. Very often you find it impossible to escape from it. If you have a telephone in your own house, you will admit that it tends to ring when you least want it to ring; when you are asleep, or in the middle of a meal or a conversation or when you are just going out, or when you are in your bath. Are you strong-minded enough to ignore it? You are not. You think there may be some important news or message for you. I can assure you that if a message is really important it will reach you sooner or later. Have you ever rushed crippling from the bath, or chewing from the table, or dazed from the bed, only to be told that you are a wrong number?
But you will say, you need not have your name printed in the telephone directory, and you can have a telephone which is only usable for outgoing calls. Besides, you will say, isn’t it important to have a telephone in case of sudden emergency—illness, accident, or fire? Of course, you are right, but here in a thickly populated country like England one is seldom far from a telephone in case of dreadful necessity.
I think perhaps I had better try to justify (证明是有理的) myself by trying to prove that what I like is good. I admit that in different circumstances—if I were a wealthy and powerful businessperson, for instance, or badly ill and had to lie in bed, I might find a telephone a necessity. But then if I were a taxi-driver I should find a car as necessity. Let me put it another way: there are two things for which the English seem to show particular talent: one is mechanical invention, the other literature. My own business happens to be with the use of words but I see I must now stop using them, for I have had just been handed a slip of paper to say that somebody is waiting to speak to me on the telephone. I think I had better answer it. After all, one never knows, it may be something important.

Is there a “success personality”—some winning combination of qualities that leads almost inevitably (必然地) to achievement? If so, exactly what is that secret success formula(公式), and can anyone develop it?
At the Gallop Organization we recently focused in depth on success, inquiring into the attitudes of 1500 distinguished people selected at random from Who’s Who in America. Our research finds out a number of qualities that occur regularly among top achievers. Here is one of the most important, that is common sense.
Common sense is the most widely possessed quality of the people surveyed. Seventy-nine percent award themselves a top score in this quality. And 61 percent say that common sense is very important in contributing to their success.
To most, common sense means the ability to present sound, practical judgments on everyday affairs. To do this, one has to remove extra ideas and get right to the key points of what matters. A Texas oil and gas businessman puts it this way: “The key ability for success is simplifying. In conduction of meeting and dealing with industry reducing a complex problem to the simplest term is highly important.”
Is common sense a quality a person is born with, or can you do something to increase it? The oil man’s answer is that common sense can definitely be developed. He owes this to learning how to debate in school. Another way to increase your store of common sense is to observe it in others, learning from their—and your own—mistakes.
Besides common sense, there are many other factors that influence success: knowing your field, self-reliance, intelligence, the ability to get things done, leadership, creativity, relationships with others, and of course, luck. But common sense stands out. If you develop these qualities, you’ll succeed. And you might even find yourself listed in Who’s Who someday.

Work and study today are very different from what they were like 20 years ago. In the past, people often worked in the same job from graduation till retirement. Today, however, everyone needs to learn new things constantly on the job and it is common practice for people to go back to school from time to time in order to keep up with the fast changing world. Changing jobs has also become common practice for many people as they aim to enrich their work experience, develop new skills and meet new challenges. In today’s world of constant innovation (创新,革新), you can’t afford to think that you have finished with your studies. If you don’t want to be all behind in today’s competitive job market, you have to commit yourself to lifelong learning.
Effective lifelong learning is not only a matter of collecting formal qualifications. It’s also about forming habits that help you study, and developing attitudes that make you receptive (善于接受的,能容纳的) to learning.
Habits that help you study include time management, note taking, analysis and writing. These habits are useful but you won’t learn effectively unless you have the right attitude. Being open-minded is important because learning something new often means challenging the ideas you have already hold. Expecting to learn something that is both new and valuable will in fact help you to do so. For successful lifelong learning, you must take these study habits and attitudes with you when you leave school to start on your adult lives.
School is the ideal place to gain lifelong learning skills because you have support and resources, and you are young and naturally more open to learning. If you invest time in developing your study skills now, you’ll be enjoying the rewards for the rest of your life. In school you also have the time to develop learning skills. Many adults are sadly too busy to develop learning skills once they start work.
Today you cannot assume that completing a course will give you qualifications that will see you through your career. Change is unpredictable and you must be ready for it. In fact, there is no profession that doesn’t require continuous learning. But this is not something to be scared of. All you need to do is to develop learning skills and learn how to learn so that you are ready to keep yourself up-to-date with changes that come your way. Be open-minded, have the right attitude, and be ready for the next challenge.

“BANG! BANG!” Setting off firecrackers(爆竹), which has been the most typical custom on the Spring Festival, is the happiest part of the Festival for most Chinese kids. They light the fuse(导火线) nervously, run away in a hurry, cover their ears with their hands and watch the colorful display with a big smile on their faces. Faced with the beautiful scene, they feel they are the happiest ones in the world as if they had never had a more exciting experience.
While setting off firecrackers can bring kids so much fun, these firecrackers can also be dangerous. Therefore, many Chinese big cities including Beijing began to ban them in the 1980s. Such an activity was completely or partially forbidden in big cities because the government took security, noise and pollution factors into consideration. As a replacement, some buy tapes with firecracker sounds to listen to, some break little balloons to get the sound too, while others buy firecracker handicrafts to hang in the living room.
This year good news came for teens in Beij ing. The ban on firecrackers was cancelled on September 9, 2008. It will add much fun to the coming Spring Festival in tile capital. Hearing the news, many kids were wild with joy.
According to Chinese custom, lighting firecrackers is a must during the Spring Fesrival. People believe the sound of the firecrackers drives away demons(恶魔) and bad luck for the coming year. Their beautiful colours and sound also bring much excitement during this most important traditional Chinese festival.
Since the ban, people complained that the Spring Festival was too quiet and not traditional enough. Children lost the fun and grown-ups lost their childhood memories.
Some even worried that if the ban continued, the next generation would only know the custom of lighting firecrackers through books. This would be a great loss for tradition.
Everybody knows that we can’t give up eating for the slight risk of choking(因噎废食). So in recent years, many cities have resumed the old custom at the request of local residents. This year Beijing kids will also be able to join in.
However, every year there are kids injured by setting off fireworks in a dangerous way. So while enjoying yourself, please bear safety in mind.
Don’t light fireworks among crowds, inside a bottle or with a part of your body right over it.
No matter how much fun firecrackers are, the most important thing is to keep away from danger. We wish every kid an exciting and safe Spring Festival!
