Kids worry about things like grades, tests, their changing bodies, getting along with friends, the goal they missed at the soccer game, or whether they’ll make the team. They may worry about social troubles like cliques (朋党), peer pressure, or whether they’ll be bullied (威吓), teased, or left out.
There are some tips to help your kids handle what’s worrying them as follows.
Find out what’s on their minds. Be available and take an interest in what’s happening at school, on the team, and with your kids’ friends. Take casual opportunities to ask how it’s going. As you listen to stories of a day’s events, be sure to ask about what your kids think and feel about what happened. If your children seem to be worried about something, ask them about it.
Show your care and understanding. Being interested in your children’s concerns shows they’re important to you. It helps your kids feel supported and understood. Reassuring comments can help — but usually only after you’ve heard your children out. Say that you understand their feelings and the problems.
Guide kids to solutions. When your children tell you about a problem, offer to help them. For example, if your son is worried about an upcoming math test, offering to help him study will reduce his concern about it. In most situations, don’t simply jump in and fix the problem for your children. Instead, think it through and come up with possible solutions together. Solve problems with your kids, rather than for them. By taking an active role, kids learn how to handle a problem independently.
Be a good role model. Your response to your own worries can go a long way toward teaching your kids how to deal with everyday challenges. If you’re at a loss or angry when dealing with a to-do list that’s too long, your kids will learn that as the proper response to stress.

Until just a few years ago, we doctors believed that the brain stopped making new neural(神经系统的) connections (meaning that your memory began to get worse) when the body stopped developing, usually in your early 20s. And we knew that, like any other body part, neurons weaken as we age. Loss of brain function due to neural breakdown was assumed to be a normal, unavoidable part of aging.
It turns out that we were wrong. In the past few years, it has been discovered that you can, in fact, make new neurons starting in your 20s and continuing well into old age. You can literally rewire the brain with new parts as the older parts wear out. How? Simple: Keep learning. Just as your body can pack on and condition new muscle, your brain can rebuild used-up neurons.
How strong is the evidence for this? Strong enough that a $200 million industry devoted to brain boosting software (products like Brain Age, MindFit, and Lumosity that supposedly improve your memory function) has sprung up out of nowhere. All “mental fitness” means are keeping your memory intact(everything from phone numbers to how to throw a football). So what can you do to stay smart?
Keep blood pressure down. People with high blood pressure are more likely to develop cognitive impairment later in life.
Eat more vitamins. Like E(in nuts and sunflower seeds), B6 and B12(beef, tuna), and folic acid(leafy greens, citrus, berries), which help keep your brain’s chemistry in balance.
Exercise your brain. This is the best way to rebuild and strengthen those precious neurons. Learn to play chess or the guitar. When you’re at a stoplight, try to recall the starting lineup of the 1983 Celtics. See a movie that doesn’t feature Ben Stiller. Or read, like, a book.

Does any of this sound familiar? “I’m too tall.” “I’m too short.” “I’m too fat.” Are you putting yourself down? If so, you’re not alone. As a teenager, you’re going through lots of changes in your body. As your body changes, so does your body image (意象). Body image is how you view your physical self — including whether you feel you’re attractive and whether others like your looks.
If you have a positive body image, you probably like and accept yourself the way you are, even if you don’t fit some media “ideal”. This healthy attitude allows you to explore other aspects of growing up, such as developing good friendships, becoming more independent from your parents and challenging yourself physically and mentally (精神上). Some people think they need to change how they look to feel good about themselves. But all you need to do is change the way you see your body and how you think about yourself. Here are some tips on doing these:
Recognize your body is your own, no matter what shape or size it comes in. Try to focus on how strong and healthy your body is and the things it can do, not on what’s wrong with it or what you feel you want to change about it.
Identify which aspects of your appearance you can change and which you can’t. Everyone has things that they can’t change and need to accept — like their height, for example, or their shoe size. So don’t forget that real people aren’t perfect and perfect people aren’t real.
If there are things about yourself you want to change and can, do this by setting a goal for yourself. For example, if you want to get fit, make a plan to exercise every day and eat healthily. Then follow the course of your progress until you reach your goal.

Many people today are worried about the quality of the food they eat. This concern has led to an increasing number of organic products appearing on supermarket shelves. Many people refuse to buy products that contain artificial colorings or preservatives, or foods that come from genetically modified (GM) crops, fearing that these foods are unhealthy and can cause cancer and other diseases. Some advocates of genetically modified foods consider such attitudes unjustified. I am one of them, and in this essay I will try to justify why I think concerns about GM foods have little value.
First of all, GM foods have been around for almost 20 years. Contrary to the claims of those who oppose GM foods, there have not been any officially reported cases of such foods causing cancer or any other diseases. In fact, research into GM foods has been unable to confirm any harmful effects on human health whatsoever.
Secondly, not everyone can afford organic foods. Climate change and rising fuel costs have led to global increases in the price of food, and as a result, many poor people are spending more money on feeding themselves. Many can hardly afford to buy food. GM plants are generally more resistant to droughts, floods and pests, and have higher production per hectare(公顷), which leads to more affordable food prices.
The world population keeps growing and is expected to reach eight billion by 2015. People in fast-developing countries such as India and China are consuming more energy and food. The only solution to the ever-increasing demand for food is to grow more GM crops. Unless scientists and governments come up with a better solution, GM foods are here to stay.
To conclude, people are free to eat the food of their choice, whether it is organic or not. However, I think that many people overlook major benefits of GM foods, and instead choose to focus on the unproven negative effects of such foods.

Contrary to organic foods, GM plants are generally more resistant to natural ________ and pests, and have higher production. As a result, more people can afford to buy GM foods.
GM foods are the only________ to the increasing demand for food at present.

When you do business online, remember one of the most important factors in online success is list building. No matter what goals you’re seeking with your online activities, building a good contact list is vital for a successful outcome. List building plays a major role in developing good relationships with your site’s customers, and visitors. It can be used to get more sales for your site or business. For these reasons contact building should be high on your list when you’re marketing or promoting on the web. Fortunately, list building is an easy process that any site or webmaster can quickly set up as long as you understand two simple elements. To be really successful, your list building must combine these two key elements. Without these you will probably find building your contact list difficult and slow going. So it is worth your while to fully understand these two factors in your list building.
Value-It should offer important information, quality content, special deals / discounts, and more importantly, it should offer a valuable relationship or connection to an expert in the subject area of the list.
Subscribers (订户) must benefit from joining your list. If you’re building a list, just write down all the benefits someone would receive from joining your site or list, including receiving important information, getting special valuable content, receiving special deals / discounts, getting training videos and getting timely announcements or news. Don’t forget there may also be a psychological reason for joining your list-many people like being part of a group or membership site. It’s human nature. Everybody likes to feel included.
Free whatever you offer-make sure it is Free. The quickest way to build any list is to give away free valuable content, information, videos, reports, e-books, discounts, prizes... everybody loves a free gift. Just make them an offer they can’t refuse. This has more to do with the nature of your gift and the kind of contacts you’re building-giving away free buying guides on how to purchase real estate, fast cars, LCD TVs, laptops... will definitely attract the right “buying customer”. If you’re into selling, you just have to adjust your marketing to combine the free element correctly. In addition, giving away something free is the first step in starting an ongoing relationship with your subscribers. It gets the ball rolling.

Teenagers today live in a very competitive world. It is more important than ever to succeed at school if you hope to have a chance in the job market afterwards. It’s no wonder that many young people worry about letting down their parents, their classmates and themselves. In trying to please everyone, they take on too many tasks until it becomes harder and harder to balance homework, parties, sports activities and friends. The result is that young people suffer from stress.
There are different ways of dealing with stress. Everyone knows that caffeine, whether it is in the form of coffee or soft drinks, keeps you awake and active. But caffeine is a drug which can become addictive (上瘾). In the end, like other drugs, caffeine only leads to more stress. A better way to deal with stress is to exercise. Research has proved that physical exercise is a good release for stress, because it increases certain chemicals in the brain which calm you down. Making sure you get enough sleep is also an important way of avoiding stress and of staying healthy and full of energy. Another way to avoid stress is to manage your time effectively. It is better to do a few tasks really well than lots of tasks badly. Know your limits and try not to take on too much. Finally, if it all gets beyond your control, don’t panic or get hysterical (歇斯底里). Find the time to sit down quietly and breathe deeply for ten to twenty minutes. Do this regularly, and it will help you calm down.

What makes people successful? Take a look around and talk to your friends and seniors who are very successful, you will see all of them have adopted certain values which have proved vital for their success.
It is evident that successful people take initiative (主动性). When they find something needs to be done, they never hesitate to do it. They believe that responsibility is taken, not given. They weigh immediately what has to be done and then do it with pleasure thus strengthening their reputation.
Successful people do things with great enthusiasm, especially when they believe in what they are doing. They are motivated by their own satisfaction and the joy they get from doing their work. They work hard even when no one is watching and they devote themselves to their work.
They do not fear failure. Failures and disappointments in life are unavoidable. It is failure that teaches us much more than success. Successful people pick themselves up after a fall and try again with more determination and commitment and learn from each failure. They associate with those they can learn from and enjoy the company of those appreciating their achievement.
Having good IQ often gets a person what he wants but it's really the EQ that keeps him there and helps him enjoy a high reputation. Successful people are polite to everyone and treat others with respect. By giving respect to others, they command respect for themselves.
Another important quality of successful persons is that they never complain. It's better to praise others and win favor with them. So instead of complaining about a situation, successful people always try to solve it.
To put it shortly, take initiative and be enthusiastic about them. Do not be afraid to fail, but get up and start again. When you do so, success will be just around the corner.

Manners nowadays in metropolitan cities like London are practically non-existent. It is nothing for a big, strong schoolboy to push an elderly woman aside to take the last remaining seat on the underway or bus.
This question of giving up seats in public transport is much argued about by young men, who say that since women have claimed equality, they no longer deserve to be treated with politeness and that those who go out to work should take their turns in the rat race like anyone else. But women have never claimed to be physically strong as men. Even if it is not agreed, however, the fact remains that courtesy(礼节) should be shown to the old and the sick. Are we really so lost to all ideals of unselfishness that we can sit there indifferently(冷漠地) reading the paper or a book, saying to ourselves, “First come, first served” while a grey-haired woman, a mother with a young child or a cripple(残障者) stands? Yet this is all too often seen.
Older people, tired and impatient from a day’s work, are not always considerate either--far from it. Many arguments break out as the older people push and squeeze(挤) each other to get on buses. One cannot approve this, of course, but one does feel there is just a little more excuse.
It seems urgent, not only that communications in transport should be improved, but also that communication between human beings should be kept smooth and polite. All over cities, it seems that people are too tired and too rushed to be polite. Shop assistants won’t bother to assist; taxi drivers shout at each other as they dash dangerously around corners; bus conductors pull the bell before their desperate passengers have time to get on or off the bus, and so on. It seems to us that it is up to the young to do their small part to stop such lowering of moral standards.

We often see top students around us and everyone knows about them. Let us take Jenny as an example. She is the monitor of our class. She spends a lot of time working for our class. But she still gets good grades in all subjects. How do students like Jenny do that? When I asked her, she said, “Hard work is not the whole story. It’s not how long you sit at the desk with your books open. It’s what you do while you are sitting.” Indeed, we can see many top students actually spend fewer hours on their studies than their classmates. Jenny gave me some valuable suggestions.
If your math teacher assigns(分派) five problems you should do six. If your Chinese teacher assigns eight pages of reading, you should read nine. The more you practice, the more you learn.
Studying is a matter of personal preference(偏爱),so choose the way you are most comfortable with. Some people like working at night when the house is quiet, while others like doing their work early in the morning. Still others like studying as soon as they arrive home from school while the work is fresh in their minds. No matter which way suits you, try to do your best.
Studying is your business and business comes before entertainment(娱乐). When you are studying, phone calls should go unanswered, TV shows unwatched, snacks ignored. Studying is the only thing in your mind. Nothing can pull your attention away from what you are studying.
Studying is like eating. You chew it one bite at a time. You can plan what to do today, but don’t do too much. When you can’t finish the work you planned to do, you will feel disappointed and may lose confidence. On the other hand, you will not study well without a good plan. It all depends on how you arrange your time.
The students who hand in a clearly written paper is already half way to an A. Neat(工整的) papers are likely to get higher marks than sloppy(被泼水弄湿的) ones. When you write neatly and do your work carefully, the thoughts in your mind are clear. You are able to make fewer mistakes.

Some people believe that greed and selfishness has become the basis of modern society, and we should return to the old traditions of family and community then we will have a better life. To what extent do you agree or disagree with the above opinion?
In this fast-paced world, many values are undergoing major changes. While people
traditionally prioritize caring, sharing and generosity in life and work, modern people seem to be more self-absorbed and self-concerned.
Modern people act selfishly to survive the harsh competition of life. They say that it is a jungle out there. To survive, you have to fight with whatever means that come handy. Obviously greedy and selfishness go perfectly well with such ideas. In a company, employees do everything they can to get better pay and higher position, even at the cost of colleagues. We are in any way advocating any selfish conduct. It is just that people are pressured to act in a certain way due to outside influences.
In spite of common practice, it is hard to conclude that modern society is built on greed and selfishness, both of which are not newly invented vocabulary. In ancient times people also did greedy and selfish things though such behaviors were more condemned then. But we can not ignore the fact that people in the past lived a relatively more isolated life and faced less pressure compared with their modern counterparts.
Are we happier to share with others and be generous to them? There is no fixed answer either. Some people take great pleasure helping and giving to others while others feel happy doing the opposite. But I personally think that people should not be too selfish. Caring for others can actually encourage the development of a mutually beneficial relationship.
In conclusion, modern people appear to be more self-centered than those in the past due to strong outside pressure. However, we should encourage people to know the importance of being caring and generous and build a mutually beneficial relationship with others.

A conversation is not a business meeting at work or with your family. It is a personal or informal talk that takes place in the restaurant, in a car or walking on the street on your way to work.
It can make or break a relationship. It can make a career successful. It can make new friends. It can just brighten up another person’s life. It can change the world!
Here are some ways to make a conversation bring meaning to you and others.
Before starting a conversation, be clear about what you want to achieve. Knowing your purpose beforehand allows you to keep your conversation to the point and never get lost out of the way.
Start a topic that is very timely and appropriate. The starting point has to be depending on your relationship with the person you are talking to and the situation the person or both of you are going through. Starting the conversation with the right topic sets the tone that brings both sides at ease.
Come up with something that will make both of you interested. This allows the other person to be drawn more to speak up. Discovering common likes and dislikes opens up a bond (纽带) between two people.
Put yourself in the shoes of the other person. Think how the other person feels at that moment. Feeling how the other person feels helps you to be in his position.
One of the most difficult tasks to do in a conversation is really listening. Do not prepare for what to say while the other person is talking. Do not just keep quiet because you want to give the other person a time to talk. The proof that you really listen is to repeat your understanding of what was said in your own words.
After you have spoken, give the other person a time to talk. There are some people who like to talk about themselves. If you are one of them, try to be less selfish. A conversation is not a monologue (独角戏) or an interview.
Managing a conversation shows the kind of person you are. You do not have to wait for the other person to lead the discussion. You can do this. No matter who you are, if you lead a talk, you make a difference.

You want to be confident and feel confident, but what if you're starting with little or no confidence? True self-confidence isn't an overnight acquisition. It takes dedication to realize you are a good human being that is worthy of respect and love.
Recognize your insecurities
What does that voice in the back of your mind say? Why do you feel uncomfortable or ashamed of yourself? This could be anything from regrets to friends at school or negative experience. Whatever is making you feel unworthy, or ashamed, identify it, give it a name, and write it down. You can also tear these written pieces to start feeling positive on those points.
Get rid of insecurities gradually
Each day you should weaken it. There's no quick fix. Get to the root of the problem; focus on it and understand that you need to resolve each issue before you can move on. Check if it is an old past emotion and if it is really still relevant or applicable in your life today. And that does not mean you have to get rid of whatever makes you feel bad (many times, you simply can't). You need to learn to accept yourself, your past, your circumstances as they are, without necessarily thinking of them as “bad”.
Identify your successes
Everyone is good at something, so discover the things at which you do extremely well, then focus on your talents. Give yourself permission to be proud of them. Give yourself credit for your successes. Inferiority (自卑) is a state of mind in which you've declared yourself a victim. Do not allow yourself to be victimized.
Be Positive
Avoid self-pity, or the pity and sympathy of others. Never allow others to make you feel inferior—they can only do so if you let them. If you continue to dislike and look down upon yourself, others are going to do and believe likewise. Instead, speak in a positive way about yourself, about your future, and about your progress. Do not be afraid to show your strengths and qualities to others. By doing so, you strengthen those ideas in your mind and encourage your growth in a positive direction.
Apply “facial feedback theory”
Studies surrounding what’s called the "facial feedback theory" suggest that the expressions on your face can actually encourage your brain to express certain emotions. So look in the mirror and smile every day, and you might feel happier with yourself and more confident in the long run.
Help others
When you know you’re of help to the people around you, and are making a positive difference in other people’s lives (even if it's just being kinder to the person who serves you coffee in the morning), you'll know that you are a positive force in the world—which will boost yourself confidence.
Now, dear friends, will you let confidence keep you company? Be confident, and accomplishing your goals will be just around the corner.

Smart cards, unlike magnetic stripe cards, can do many different things and hold a lot of information. In this way, they do not need to get information from a faraway place when they are used.
Today, there are several kinds of smart cards, all of which are very popular in the market:
IC (Integrated Circuit) microprocessor cards: Microprocessor cards (chip cards) offer a larger memory and better security than the traditional magnetic stripe cards do. Chip cards can also hold data. These cards are used for many things. Thus, chips have been the main platform for cards that hold a secure digital identity. Some examples of these cards are: cards that hold money; cards that provide safe access to a network; cards that allow setting stop boxes on television to remain safe from privacy(隐私).
Optical memory cards: Optical memory cards look like cards with a piece of CD on the top. Optical memory cards can store up to 4MB of data. But once written, the data can not be changed or removed. Thus, this type of card is good for keeping records, such as medical files, driving records or travel histories. Today, these have no processors in them (although this is coming in the near future). While the cards are almost as cheap as chip cards, the cards readers are expensive.

Good study habits will contribute to a successful academic future. Good study habits lead to good grades, and good grades lead to applications for better colleges and universities. This in turn will lead to a great career.
To be successful, the first thing you need to do is to take responsibility for your actions. You are the only one who can decide your own important things and how to use your time. Your actions today will decide what will happen tomorrow and even in the near future.
Your success rests in your own hands. Do not be influenced by others. Be a leader, not a follower. Do not allow your friends to tell you what is important. Keep friends who lead you towards your goals, not away from them.
The most important thing to learn to succeed in the classroom is to make full use of your time outside the classroom. Review your class notes and the proper chapters (章节) in your textbooks. Different people work better at different times. Some students work better in the morning, while some can study better in the afternoon, or at night. Nightly review of your notes is a great idea and will help you understand your lessons to a much greater degree. This review will save time in the long run. If you study in the morning, plan to study your hardest subjects first. If you prepare for your lessons in advance, you will be more relaxed in classes.
Set the more important things into your plan, have a to-do list and put the most important project first. Once this is done, move to the second most important project. Crossing off each project as you finish will give you a sense of achievement.
Choose a study place where you can be comfortable and pay attention to other things that help to improve your productivity (效率). For example, can you study well with soft music in the background?
Always challenge yourself. Do not be satisfied with your own school textbooks. Ask questions and do your own research. Share your knowledge and listen to others. When you share your knowledge, you help others increase their knowledge. As an unexpected result, when you help others, you learn more.
Always seek solutions to problems. If you have difficulty understanding something in the book, read it again. If you still cannot understand it, ask the teacher for help. Make sure to look for help immediately or you may fall behind.
When you put your best effort into you work, you are already a success! When you follow these study habits successfully, you will develop a sense of satisfaction. This will provide you with a strong feeling of pride because of your achievement. Your good grades will give you confidence for the future. These habits will contribute to a successful and happy future!
