After spending a weekend away with my adult son, I was so impressed by his generous heart that I sent him this letter.
Dear son,
I want to thank you for teaching me a very valuable lesson in life by the great example you 31 . When we were eating at that cafe in Boston and a person who had 32 his hamburger didn’t have enough money to pay for it, without 33 , you went over and 34 the extra $2 into his hand.
When we were leaving, you 35 threw a five-cent coin onto the pavement and said something like, “Some kid will really enjoy 36 this.”
Last week, a young man 37 me in the line at a petrol station didn’t have 38 money to pay for his petrol. I asked the money collector, “How much 39 is he?” She told me he had meant to put $15 of petrol in his car 40 he had been looking at the wrong gauge (计量表) and had put in 15 41 , which came to a little over $20. That is an easy mistake as both gauges run fast.
Something made me think of you and 42 you did that night at the cafe in Boston. I handed the man $6. He was so 43 and said, “But why would you do this for me?” I just smiled as I thought of you.
Thank you, son, for teaching me that “it’s 44 to give than to receive”. Now when I see a five-cent coin on the 45 and want to pick it up, I think of you and leave it there, just in case some kid will get a kick out of finding it.
Love always, Mum.

In the winter vocation of 2008, I was fixed with a job. I worked as a(n) 21 at Mr Breen’s fruit shop. The fruit shop did good business. Most of the trade came from the housewives who lived in the neighborhood, 22_ he also had regular customers who arrived outside the shop in cars. Mr Breen 23 them all by names and they sometimes even had their order already made up, always 24 me to carry it out to their car. They were clearly longstanding customers, and I 25 they must have stayed faithful to him because he had promised to sell good quality fruits. He had a way with them---- I had to 26 that. He called every woman “madam” for a start, 27 those who clearly were not, but when he said it, it did not sound like flattery(恭维). It just sounded 28 in an old-fashioned way. He was a great chatter 29 . If he did not know them, he would greet them with a few 30 about the weather, 31 he did, he would ask about their families or make 32 , always cutting his cloth 33 his customers. Whatever their bills came to, he 34 gave them back the few odd pence(零钱), and I was sure they thought he was very generous. But I thought he was the opposite. He never threw anything away. He was always looking for 35 for nothing.

Pass Your Love On
Waiting for the airplane to take off, I was happy to get a seat by myself. Just then, an air hostess approached me and asked, “Would you mind 21 your seat? A couple would like to sit together.” The only 22 seat was next to a girl with her arms in casts (石膏绷带), a black-and-blue face, and a sad expression. “ 23 am I going to sit there,” I thought immediately. But a soft voice spoke, “She needs help.” Finally, I 24 to move to that seat.
The girl was named Kathy. She 25 in a car accident and now was on her way for 26 .
When the snack and juice arrived, it did not take me long to 27 that Kathy would not be able to 28 herself. I considered 29 to feed her but hesitated, as it seemed too 30 to offer a service to a 31 . But then I realized that Kathy’s need was more 32 than my discomfort. I offered to help her eat, and 33 she was uncomfortable to accept, she 34 as I expected. We became closer and closer in a short period of time. By the end of the five-hour trip, my heart 35 , and the 36 was really better spent than if I had just sat by myself.
I was very glad I had reached 37 my comfort zone to sit next to Kathy and feed her. Love 38 flows beyond human borders and removes the fears that keep us 39 . When we 40 to serve another, we grow to live in a larger and more rewarding world.

By the third year of teaching I’d begun to expect Christmas break more for the school holiday and less for the excitement of the children. I was teaching fourth grade and my students had made me 16 . I just had to get through one of the hardest days of the school year.
The morning bell rang. I walked 17 through the cold into the overly heated school building. Twenty-two smiling faces 18 me at the school bus stop. I forced myself to 19 their smiles. Back into the classroom, they 20 , comparing plans for the 21 . I had to remove one student from each arm 22 I could take a seat at my desk for my morning duties. Before I could find my roll book(点名册) my desk was covered with 23 and gifts followed by a 24 of “Merry Christmas” wishes.
“Oh, thank you,” I must have 25 a million times. Each gift was truly special to me, except my 26 mood. It was kind of them to 27 me. After a while, I heard a small nervous 28 say my name. I looked up to see Brandon standing 29 by my desk, holding a small, round gift. “This is for you.”
“Thank you, Sweetheart.” I laid it on my desk with the others.
“Um, could you 30 it now?”
I gently tore at the paper and tape. “ 31 ,” he said, “it’s breakable.” Slowly I opened a small, green Christmas tree ornament(装饰物), complete with a hook already 32 . It dawned on me what he had done. Then a nearby student said that he just pulled that off his own tree. I tried to keep my 33 back.
Later that day, I sat 34 the ornament in my hands. Was I really so important to this child that he had searched for something to give me? Now every year as I 35 pull a green Christmas ball from my ornament box, I remember the deep influence my students have on me.

Using All Your Strength
A young boy was walking with his father along a country road. When they came across a large tree branch 11 the pathway, the boy asked, “Do you think I could 12 it?”
His father answered, “If you use all your strength, I am sure you can.”
The boy tried 13 to lift, pull and push the branch, but it wouldn’t budge. 14 , he said, “Dad, you were wrong. I can’t do it alone.”
“Try again,” his dad said.
This time, as the boy struggled, his father 15 him. Together they pushed the 16

“Son, the first time you didn’t use all your strength,” his father said. “You didn’t ask me to help.”
This is a valuable 17 . There are many things we can’t do alone, but that doesn’t mean we can’t get them done. We are 18 by resources that can be mobilized (调动) to help us
19 our goals including family, friends and faith.
Sometimes we 20 to ask for help because of 21 or stubbornness. Sometimes we think it is a sign of 22 to admit we need a hand. Sometimes we don’t even 23
asking for help. Whatever the reason is, it is a waste.
It’s 24 that we learn to use all our strength. This includes inner resources such as discipline, courage, and even love. It also includes 25 resources. Just as we should be willing to help others, we should be willing to ask others for help.

A young man, a student in one of our universities, was one day taking a walk with a professor, who was commonly called the students’ friend, for his kindness to those who waited on his instructions.
As they went along, they saw 21 in the path a pair of old shoes, which they supposed to belong to a poor man who was employed in a field close by, and who had 22 finished his day’s work.
The student 23 the professor, saying, “Let’s play the man a(n) 24 : we will hide his shoes, and we stay behind those bushes, and wait to see his 25 when he cannot find them.”
“My young friend,” answered the professor, “we should never 26 ourselves at the expense of the poor. You are 27 , and may give yourself a much greater pleasure by means of helping the poor man.Put a 28 into each shoe, and then we will hide ourselves and watch how the 29 affects him.”
The student did so, 30 they both placed themselves behind the bushes close by.
The poor man soon finished his work, and came 31 the field to the path where he had left his coat and shoes. While 32 his coat he slipped his foot into one of his shoes; but feeling something 33 , he bent down to feel what it was, and found the coin.
Astonishment and wonder were seen upon his face.He gazed upon the coin, turned it round, and looked at it again and again. He then looked around 34 on all sides, but no person was to be seen.He now put the money into his pocket, and went on to put on the other shoe; but his surprise was 35 on finding the other coin.
His feelings 36 him; he fell upon his 37 , looked up to heaven and let out a sincere thanksgiving, in which he spoke of his wife, sick and 38 , and his children without bread, whom the timely giving, from some unknown hand, would save from dying.
The student stood there deeply affected, his eyes filled with tears.“Now,” said the professor,
“Are you not much better pleased than if you had played your 39 trick?” The youth replied, “You have taught me a lesson which I will never forget.I feel now the 40 of those words, which I never understood before: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’”

In the past, man did not have to think about the protection of his environment. There were few people on the earth, and natural resources seemed to be 36 .
Today things are 37 , the world has become too 38 . We are using up our natural resources too quickly, and at the same time we are 39 our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we continue to do this, human life on the earth will not 40 .
Everyone 41 today that if too many fish are taken from the sea, there will soon be none left. Yet, with modern fishing 42 , more and more fish are caught. We know that if too many trees are cut down, 43 will disappear and nothing will grow on the land. Yet, we 44 to use bigger and more powerful machines to 45 more and more trees.
We realize that if rivers are polluted with waste products from factories, we will die. 46 , in most countries wastes are 47 put into rivers or into the sea, and there are 48 laws to stop this.
We know, too, that if the 49 of the world continues to rise at the present rate, in a few years there will not be enough 50 . What can we do to solve these problems ?
If we eat more vegetables and less 51 , there will be more food available for everyone. Land that is used to grow crops 52 five times more people than land where animals are kept. Our natural resources will 53 longer if we learn to recycle them. The world population will not rise so quickly if people use modern methods of birth 54 .
Finally, if we educate people to think about the problems, we shall have a better and clearer 55 in the future.
