Being alone in outer space can be __36__. That is one reason why astronauts on solo space flights were given plenty of work to keep them 37 . They were also in constant communication with people on the earth. 38 , being with people from whom you cannot get away might be even harder than being alone. This is what happens on long submarine(海底)voyages. It will also happen on 39 space flights in the future. Will there be special problems of adjustment under such conditions?
Scientists have studied the reactions of men to one another during long submarine voyages. They have also found that the longer the voyage lasts, the more serious the problem of 40 is. When men are 41 together for a long period, they begin to feel 42 . Everyone has little habits of speaking and behaving that are ordinarily acceptable. In the limited space over a long period of time, however, these little habits may become very_ 43 .
Apparently, although no one wants to be 44 all the time, everyone needs some degree of privacy. When people are enclosed together, they are in what is called stress situation. That means that they are under an unusual amount of 45 or stress.
People who are well-adjusted are able to 46 stress situations better than others. That is one reason why so much care is taken in 47 our astronauts. These men undergo a long period of testing and training. One of the things tested is their behavior under stress, and thus they can do better than ordinary people.

It was a bitter, cold evening in northern Virginia many years ago. The old man was waiting for a ride across the 36 . The wait seemed 37 .
At last he heard the slight, steady rhythm of approaching hooves (马蹄) coming along the frozen path. Anxiously, he 38 as several horsemen came around the bend (转角处). He let the first one 39 . Then another, and another. Finally, as the 40 rider neared the spot where the old man sat like a snow statue, the old man 41 the rider’s eye and said, “Sir, would you mind giving an old man a ride to the other side? There doesn’t appear to be a passage way by 42 .”
The rider replied, “Sure.” Seeing the old man was unable to 43 his half-frozen body from the ground, the horseman got down and helped the old man onto the horse. The horseman took the old man not just across the river, but to his destination.
As they neared the tiny but cozy (舒适的) cottage, the horseman’s 44 caused him to ask, “Sir, I notice that you let several other riders go by without making a(n) 45 to get a ride. Then I came up and you 46 asked me for a ride. I’m curious why, on such a bitter winter night, you would wait and ask the last rider. 47 I had refused and left you there?”
The old man replied, “I’ve been 48 here for some time. I think I know people pretty good.” He continued, “I looked into the eyes of the other riders and immediately saw there was no 49 for my situation. But when I looked into your eyes, 50 was evident. I knew, 51 , that your gentle spirit would 52 the opportunity to give me help in my time of 53 .”
Those heartwarming comments 54 the horseman deeply.
“I’m most grateful for what you have said,” he told the old man. “May I never get too busy in my own affairs that I 55 to respond to the needs of others with kindness and compassion.”
With that, Thomas Jefferson turned his horse around and made his way back to the White House.

Some myths are stories told since ancient times to explain the causes for natural happenings. The Greek myth that explains why there are changes of 21 is about Demeter, the goddess of the harvest. She had a daughter, Persephone, whom she loved very much. Hades, god of the underworld, fell in love with Persephone, and he asked Zeus, the 22 of the gods, to give Persephone to him as his 23 . Zeus did not want either to disappoint Hades or to upset Demeter, so he said he would not agree to the marriage, but neither would he 24 it. Hades, therefore, decided to take the girl without 25 . When Persephone was picking flowers in the garden, he seized her and took her to the underworld. When Demeter 26 what happened to Persephone, she became so 27 that she caused all plants to 28 . People were in 29 of starving. But Demeter was determined not to let crops grow 30 her daughter, Persephone, was returned to her. 31 , still not wanting to disappoint Hades, decided upon a condition for Persephone's 32 . She could go back to her mother if she had not 33 anything while she was in the underworld. Demeter 34 it because she did not know that Persephone had eaten several pomegranate (石榴) seeds in the underworld. When Zeus 35 this, he agreed that Persephone could spend part of the year with her 36 , but he added that since she had eaten the seeds, she must spend part of the year in the underworld. And so it 37 that when Persephone is in the underworld, Demeter is sad and therefore 38 not let the crops grow. That is 39 we have winter when plants do not grow. When Persephone returns, Demeter is 40 , it is spring, and plants begin to grow again.

His parents started 44 about the boy. But they even did not know what was 45 with him. So his dad decided to travel to the boarding school and 46 him.
They sat on the bank of the lake near the school. The father started asking him some casual questions about his classes, teachers and 47 . After some time his dad said, “Do you know, son, why I am here today?”
The boy answered back, “To 48 my grades?”
“No, no,” his dad replied. “I am here to tell you that you are the most 49 person for me. I want to see you 50 . I don’t care about grades. I care about you. I care about your happiness. YOU ARE MY LIFE.”
These words 51 the boy’s eyes to be filled with tears. He 52 his dad. They didn’t say anything to each other for a long time.

Last weekend, I was walking across the village green(草坪) when I saw an elderly gentleman on the bench, just overlooking the duck pond. I thought he looked a bit forlorn(被遗弃的) so I went over and sat next to him.
After a few 36 about how nice the weather was and how there were a lot of ducks in the pond today, he told me how he used to come with his wife and watch the children feed the ducks with their mums. They didn't have any 37 of their own..So they cherished being together even more.
He explained he had been married for 54 years 38 his wife died and how much he missed 39 all the little things with her, like a beautiful sunset. He now lives in a care home. I remarked at how wonderful it must've been to have been married for so long and to have so many happy memories. He took out a large 40 and wiped his eyes and said he had one regret that in all that time he 41 told her how much he really loved her.
He showed me a photograph of them when they were young. The photo was taken more than 50 years ago. He couldn't believe how the time had 42 . I tried to comfort him by explaining that his wife would be still 43 over him and he could talk to her 44 he wants and that she knows how much he loved her because she can see into his heart.
The old man tried to 45 for blurting out his life story but I hushed him and said how privileged I felt he could talk to me and how much it meant to me.
The 46 I learned from this chance encounter is that we must tell the ones close to us how much we love and care for them and not take them for granted.
Don't 47 your kind acts until tomorrow; do them today because time flies.

Lead author Dr Rachel Cooper of University College London said her study looked __23___ 33 different reports on the __24___ of handshakes. The research involved more than 50,000 men and women and __25___ 40 years. She concludes that people with a firm strong handshake __28___ from a happy childhood that __29___ a healthy diet and __30___ of exercise.
The new study, __31___ in the British Medical Journal, also found other signs of living a longer life. These 'measures of __32___ capability' include walking at a faster pace, getting out of a chair quickly, and being able to __33___ on one leg. The study showed that slow walkers were almost three times __34___ to die at a younger age than those who walked quickly and actively. Those who __35___ to get up from their armchairs were twice as likely to die earlier than those who sprang __36___ their chairs. Dr Cooper believes there __37___ more research into the link __38___ physical capability and a long life. “Research that helps people to __39___ a long and healthy life is ever more important to help provide for an ageing __40___.” she said.

Professor Green, known to the world as a scientist, is not only absent-minded but short-sighted as well. His mind is always busy 41 scientific problems and seldom notices what is going on 42 him.
One fine day recently, he went 43 a walk in the countryside, but as 44 he has a book in his hand. When he went out , he began to read his book . He hadn’t gone far 45 he run into a big cow and fell down. In the fall, he had lost his glasses, without which he couldn’t see anything. He thought he had hit his head 46 a fat lady. “I’m sorry, Madam.” He said politely 47 searching for his glasses. As soon as he had 48 , he realized his mistake.
Soon he was fixing his mind on his book 49 and paid no attention to anything else. He had scarcely been walking for five minutes when he fell over again, _50 both his book and his glasses. This time he got very angry, seizing his umbrella, he gave the “cow” a wild blow. Then, after finding his glasses, he realized with horror that he made a second mistake. A large fat woman was fleeing from him in a horror.

When I was 17,I read a quote that went something like:“If you live each day as if it were your last, someday you’ll most certainly be right.”It made a deep 21 on me, and since then, for the past 33 years,I have 22 in the mirror every morning and asked myself:“If today were the last day of my life, 23 I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “No” for too many days in a 24 ,I know I need to change something.
Remembering that I’ll be 25 soon is the most important tool I’ve ever known to help me make the big 26 in life because almost everything falls away in the face of death, 27 only what is truly important.
About a year ago I was 28 with cancer. My doctor even advised me to go home and get my affairs 29 order, which is a doctor’s way of telling people to prepare to die.I 30 with that diagnosis all day. 31 ,at last an advanced test showed that it was a very rare cancer that is 32 with surgery.I had the surgery and I’m fine now.
33 wants to die.Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all 34 .No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be,because death is very likely the single best invention of 35 .It is life's change agent. It clears out the old to 36 for the new.Right now the new is you.But someday not too 37 from now,you will gradually become the old and be cleared away.Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.
Your time is 38 ,so don’t waste it living someone else’s 1ife.Don’t be 39 by dogma(教条) —which is living with the results of other people’s thinking.Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner 40 .And most importantly, have the courage to follow your heart.

On August 26, 1999, New York City was struck by a terrible rainstorm. The rain caused the streets 21 and the subway system almost came to a stop.
Unfortunately, this happened during the morning rush hour. Many people who were going to work were 22 to go home. Some battled to 23 a taxi or to get on a bus. Still others faced the 24 bravely, walking miles to get to work.
I 25 to be one of people on the way to work that morning. I went from subway line to subway line only to find that most 26 had stopped. After making my way 27 crowds of people. So I took the train going in the opposite direction, and then switched back to the downtown train. Finally, after what seemed like forever, the train 31 my stop. Then I had to walk several blocks in the increasingly heavy rain. When I got to my office, I was 32 through, exhausted and 33 .
My co-workers and I spend most of the day drying off. When it was 5:00 pm, I was ready to go home. I was about to turn off my computer 34 I received an email from Garth, my Director.
I would like to thank all of you who made the effort and 35 reported to work. It is always reassuring(令人欣慰), at times like these, when employees so clearly show their 36 to their jobs. Thank you.
Garth’s email was short, but I learned more from that 37 message than I ever did from a textbook. The email taught me that a few words of 38 can make a big difference. The rainstorm and the traffic 39 had made me tired and upset. But Garth’s words immediately 40 me and put a smile back on my face.

If Mickey Mouse slips (滑倒)on a banana skin on TV, viewers laugh. But for ordinary people, falling is not 36 . For example, if you 37 over a stone or fall off your bike, you have to take days to get well. For 38 people, the result of a fall could be worse.
Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh, USA, wanted to know why some people are 39 likely to fall than others.
The researchers found that 40 means more than planting your feet on the ground and standing tall. Your brain 41 your sense of balance with information from your eyes and inner ears and the 42 from your feet and legs. If something goes wrong with any of these, you’re 43 to fall. People 44 to fall more often as they grow older because their senses are slower.
State of mind is important too. The research shows that when people know they’re walking on a slippery surface, they 45 their pace and walk with flatter feet. As a result, they fall less often.
