Throughout history, gold has been a sign of purity, beauty and power.  Calling something golden means it has great quality and value. For example, the golden rule is possibly the world's most widespread moral rule. It says people should treat others the way they themselves would like to be treated.  Every major religion has its own version of this idea.
The golden ratio is found in art, architecture and nature.  It describes a rectangle with a length about one and one-half times its width. Objects using this ratio in their design seem to please the eye more than others.
Philosophers(哲学家) have their own golden idea.  The golden mean says moderation in all things is the best way to live one's life.  It is an idea linked to the Ancient Greek philosopher Aristotle.  Similar thoughts exist in Buddhism and Confucianism.(哲学思想)
Ancient Greek myths told of a time long ago when people lived in peace and happiness.  Poets called it the Golden Age.  A golden age now describes a historical period of great artistic, scientific or economic progress.  It can even recall a time of success and popularity for an industry. For example, the nineteen thirties and forties were called the Golden Age of Radio.
You may have heard the proverb silence is golden. This means silence is of great value.  It is sometimes better to say nothing than to speak.
You might say your child was good as gold when he behaved well at school.  British writer Charles Dickens used this expression in eighteen forty-three. He was describing the child Tiny Tim in the book "A Christmas Carol."
In nineteen thirty-seven, American playwright Clifford Odets wrote a play called "The Golden Boy." This expression describes a young man who has many good qualities and a bright future.
You might tell someone you are golden when that person does something very well.
Gold digger is another description. But this does not say something nice about a person.  A gold digger is someone who seeks to marry a rich person because he or she is only interested in that person's money.
Maybe you like old songs from the nineteen fifties or sixties that are still well known and popular today. These are called golden oldies. In the nineteen eighties and nineties, an American television comedy series told about four older women living in Miami, Florida.  The Golden Girls often dealt with social issues in a funny way.
Today, most older people look forward to reaching their golden years.  This is when hard-working people can retire to a life of ease and fulfillment.

It remains a curiosity and a bit of a historical mystery why we don't all drive on the same side of the road. The fact is that most people are right-handed; that's why, for much of history, drivers have stuck to the left. Ancient Romans using two-wheeled carriages are believed to have held the reins(缰绳) with their right hands and a whip with their left; to avoid whipping the near drivers, they favored the left-hand side the road. It's also easier for right-handers to get on a horse from the left, so riders were attracted to that side to avoid the near traffic as they climbed on and off. Finally, knights(骑士) and the other drivers favored the left so they could do battle, if necessary, with their good hand.
So why does most of the world travel on the right side today? Theories differ, but there's no doubt Napoleon was a major influence. The French have used the right since the late 18th century.  Some say that before the French Revolution, people in upper class drove their carriages on the left, forcing the peasantry to the right. During the violence, fearful rich people sought to mix with the peasantry by traveling on the right as well. Regardless of the origin, Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered, including Russia, Switzerland and Germany. Hitler, in turn, ordered right-hand traffic in Czechoslovakia and Austria in the 1930s. Nations that escaped right-handed conquest, like Great Britain, kept their left-handed tradition.
Who had a major effect on “keep-right” traffic law?

A.Ancient Romans B.Hitler
C.Napoleon D.Austrians

What does the second paragraph mainly tell us?

A.Napoleon brought right-hand traffic to the nations he conquered.
B.Hitler ordered right-hand traffic in Austria.
C.Great Britain escaped right-handed conquest.
D.The reasons that most of the world drives on the right side.

What does the word peasantry in the last paragraph mean?

A.People in upper class.
B.Right-handers.
C.Drivers.
D.Poor people.

Apart from Great Britain, which country mentioned in the text keeps left-hand
traffic?

A.France B.Ancient Rome
C.Russia D.Germany

Elephants are trained, at an early age, not to escape. One leg of a baby elephant is tied with a rope to a wooden post planted in the ground. The rope limits the baby elephant to an area determined by the length of the rope. At first the baby elephant tries to break free from the rope, but the rope is too strong. Soon the elephant learns that he cannot break the rope in any case. This space defined by the rope becomes the elephant's comfort zone.
As the elephant grows up it could easily break the rope, but it does not even try because it was conditioned as a baby to think that it still could not break free. As a result, the large elephant remains tied and stays in a small space.
This metaphor(隐喻) can be used to describe what happens to human beings as we become trapped in a comfort zone. Just as the elephant's space determines what it can do, our comfort zone determines what we are able to achieve. Fortunately, humans are born with the ability to make conscious choices. The elephant doesn't try to break the rope free while we can easily leave our comfort zone.
In order to expand our potential and succeed in life, we must expand our comfort zone into unfamiliar fields. You will never realize what you are truly able to achieve if you remain in your comfort zone.
The area where the baby elephant can move around is decided by ________.

A.the space covered by the elephant
B.the length of the rope
C.the elephant’s comfort zone
D.the wooden post planted in the ground

“In reading the lives of great men, I found that the first victory they won was over themselves… self-discipline(自律)with all of them came first.” — Harry S. Truman
That is the quotation (引语) that had me thinking yesterday. Discipline(纪律), in particular self-discipline, is what will get us through most things in life, from writing this simple post to Achieving Greatness for You and I. You may ask, “Why is discipline important in writing this post?” For people who have tried writing, you would know how hard it might get sometimes to actually sit down and finish the whole article in one period without getting up every few minutes to get a drink, a snack or toilet break etc.
Just with most things in life, often we lack the self-discipline to see us through what we are hoping to do or achieve. One area where self-discipline is clearly important is in losing weight. Some people are constantly looking for quick fix to their weight problem; they will jump at anything that is claimed to help them lose weight in the shortest time. They may lose weight fast, but they will find the result short-term especially if they do not change the way they live and the food they eat.
A friend of mine shared his experience going through the journey from 115 kilograms to 56 kilograms in around one year. His journey of losing weight started from a trip with his daughter to the doctor for her check-up. He playfully weighed himself on the weighing machine while his daughter was having the check-up. The doctor saw his weight and made a remark, “If you maintain that balloon weight, you cannot see your grandchildren.”
That made him decide, “Enough is enough!” Not only that, he felt tired easily and his excessive (过多的) weight made him feel like a walking balloon. In that moment of awakening, he made decisions to change his lifestyle and eating habits.
What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?

A.His writing hobby.

A.had a trip with his daughter and her family

The author holds the belief(信念)that ____ ______ .

A.we can’t achieve anything in life without self-discipline

China is having such a huge influence on the United States that many Americans are struggling to learn the Chinese language in a bid to keep competitive.
“Interest in learning Chinese among American youth and their parents has grown quickly in the past five years,” said Vivien Stewart, vice president at the Asia Society. China’s quick rise to near-superpower and its effects politically, economically and culturally are driving the American’s interest to learn the language, experts say. From kindergartens to high schools, studies by the Asia Society show, there is a “rapid rise” in interest among pupils to study the Chinese language. “The Chinese rich cultural traditions and blossoming economy mean that it is now important for all of our students to be better prepared,” said Michael Levine, Asia Society's executive director of education. A survey found that 2,400 high schools - an unbelievably high number - would be interested in offering the Advanced Placement (AP) courses in Chinese language and culture when the courses become available in 2016.
China, the world’s most popular nation, is important to the United States because it is a leading trader, consumer and investor. Its political influence is also rising across the world. It has replaced the United States as the world’s largest consumer and could become the second largest economy in the world, after the United States, in the next two to three decades.
Even though the US State Department has described the Chinese language “critical” to national prosperity and security, “the current facilities to support recruitment(招募) of students and teachers as well as the growth of high quality programs is terribly not enough,” an Asia Society study says. The Society has set an aim of having at least five percent of American high school students learning Chinese by 2015.
“Millions of Chinese are learning English, but only 24,000 Americans are learning Chinese,” said Andrew Corcoran of the San Francisco-based Chinese American International School. The most popular languages after English in US schools at present are Spanish and French while Japanese is the most popular Asian language.
The underlined word blossoming (Para. 2)means______.

A.weak B.old C.developing D.developed

Why do more and more Americans begin to learn the Chinese language?

A.To be a bridge between the two big countries.
B.To keep competitive.
C.Because they are always interested in it.
D.To gain advantage in trade.

What problems is the US faced with when it comes to learning Chinese?

A.A lack in current facilities to support recruitment of students and teachers and programs.
B.Not many people want to learn foreign languages.
C.The language is rather difficult compared with English.
D.Too many Chinese are learning English.

What is the best title for this passage?

A.Foreign Language Learning
B.Danger from China
C.The Chinese Language gets More Popular
D.Difficulties in Learning the Chinese Language.

A Tour City ------- Pompeii
Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii (庞贝,意大利那不勒斯附近一座古城) , Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for ------ its stadium and theatre, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2000 years.
Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22,000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius (维苏威火山) , a grass-covered volcano (火山). Mount Vesuvius had not erupted (爆发) for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.
In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.
For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20, 000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in even bakery (面包房). In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread ------- a type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup .
Ginseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.
Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year?

A.To visit the volcano. B.To shop and eat there.
C.To watch sports and plays. D.To see how Pompeiians lived

Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79?

A.Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully.
B.Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.
C.Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects.
D.Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.

What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived 2000 years ago?
A .They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.
B They liked women wearing all kings of makeup.
C They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating.
D They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79.

One of my wonderful memories is about a Christmas gift. Unlike other gifts, it came without wrap(包装).
On September 11th, 1958, Mum gave birth to Richard. After she brought him home from hospital, she put him in my lap, saying. "I promised you a gift, and here it is." What an honor! I turned four a month earlier and none of my friends had such a baby doll of their own. I played with it day and night. I sang to it. I told it stories. I told it over and over how much I loved it!
One morning, however, I found its bed empty. My doll was gone! I cried for it. Mum wept and told me that the poor little thing had been sent to a hospital. It had a fever. For several days, I heard Mum and Dad whispering such words as "hopeless", "pitiful", and "dying", which sounded ominous.
Christmas was coming. "Don’t expect any presents this year." Dad said, pointing at the socks I hung in the living room. "If your baby brother lives, that'll be Christmas enough." As he spoke, his eyes were filled with tears. I'd never seen him cry before.
The phone rang early on Christmas morning. Dad jumped out of bed to answer it. From my bedroom I heard him say. "What? He's all right?" He hung up and shouted upstairs. “The hospital said we can bring Richard home!"
"Thank God.'" I heard Mum cry.
From the upstairs window, I watched my parents rush out to the car. I had never seen them happy. And I was also full of joy. What a wonderful day! My baby doll would be home. I ran downstairs. My socks still hung there flat. But I knew they were not empty; they were filled with love!
