You may have experienced the annoyance of being fined because of parking illegally or finding your car towed away(拖走)after leaving it parked somewhere for a couple of minutes. But now a high-tech car sticker that’s designed to be stuck to a car’s windscreen could help motorists avoid such a situation.
The TowStop sticker sends a text message to a driver when touched by a traffic policeman,to allow motorists to send a reply and give them time to move their cars immediately.Frankfurt-based IT consultant,Daniel Kalliontzis, came up with the idea and is raising money to put his €54(£43) sticker into production.
Car owners can put the sticker inside their car’s windscreen, having set it up with key information, such as their phone number. The slim design will include a sensor(传感器)that, when touched by a traffic policeman, will send a text message warning a driver of a possible fine. The driver could then type a reply for the policeman using a smartphone, which will appear on the sticker’s screen.
The smart sticker system will rely on the good will of traffic policemen and in a way,a German law.The law states:an officer has to choose the most efficient and inexpensive way for the car owner to remove the vehicle. It could be cheaper for the government to call the driver than to tow his car.
Mail Online asked the Department of Transport whether the sticker could be used in the UK in a similar way.A spokesman said,“In England there is no legal duty to warn the motorist before issuing the ticket. However,a policeman does have the discretion not to issue a ticket if he doesn’t think the situation is that bad or he just wants to issue a warning.”
So far,Mr.Kalliontzis has raised just over €3,000(£2,362)of his €50,000(£39,381) goal.If he manages to raise the money, the stickers will be shipped in June 2015.But it appears that car owners using the smart system could get some unnecessary warning messages, because anyone could touch the smart sticker.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
I am a vegetarian(素食主义者).Many people are quick to think of vegetarianism as strange behavior.I treasure our Earth, and since we only have one, we should protect it and the wildlife that lives on it.But that’s only one of the reasons to be a vegetarian.
Vegetarians may live longer, healthier lives. There is a connection between red meat consumption and various diseases. From an economic standpoint, it requires less land, money and energy to produce foods for a vegetarian diet. While there are many benefits to being a vegetarian, only a handful of those who attempt to adopt this lifestyle succeed.
The most important quality required to be a vegetarian is firmness since surrounded by the temptation of meat, we tend to give up vegetarianism easily.Creativity is almost as important as commitment. It’s easy to tire of eating nothing but salad. But with a little creativity and some soy products, almost any meal can become vegetarian-friendly.
Not everyone wants to be vegetarian.Accepting this is part of being a vegetarian with style.Forcing your beliefs on others is disrespectful.Stylish vegetarians should also be able to turn down a meaty dish politely without annoying their hosts.
Being a successful vegetarian has been easy for me, but it may not be so for others.A common mistake is quitting before your body has adjusted to the change. It can be difficult to keep the lifestyle in the beginning because of temptation. However, it fades over time.Another common mistake is quitting because you’ve been misinformed about the nutritional wisdom of being a vegetarian. That’s why it is vital to be educated.Countless people will tell you that it’s impossible to obtain the nutrients and protein(蛋白质)your body requires without meat, but they are incorrect.People actually need only 44-55 grams of protein a day, and that is easily found in a vegetarian diet. Many meat eaters are consuming three times that amount, which is not beneficial. It leads to diseases.Vegetables can also supply all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients your body needs. However, if you’re still not convinced, you can take a multi-vitamin.

NEW YORK—Australian mining enterpriser Clive Palmer on Tuesday unveiled(公布)blueprints for TitanicⅡ, a modern copy of the doomed ocean liner, although he didn’t call the ship unsinkable any more.
The ship will largely recreate the design and decoration of the fabled original, with some modifications to keep it in line with current safety rules and shipbuilding practices, and the addition of some modern comforts such as air conditioning, Palmer said at a press conference in New York.
The three passenger classes, however, will be prevented from mingling(混杂), as in 1912, Palmer said. “I’m not too superstitious(迷信的). ”Palmer said when asked whether recreating a ship best-known for sinking was tempting fate.
White Star Line, the operator of the original ship, had said the Titanic was designed to be unsinkable. About 1, 500 people died on Titanic’s maiden voyage in 1912 from Southampton to New York after the ship collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic.
Palmer, who created the company Blue Star Line last year, refused to make a similar boast.
“Anything will sink if you put a hole in it, ”Palmer said. “I think it would be very cavalier to say it. ”
Unlike the original, TitanicⅡwill have more than enough space in its lifeboats for every person on board and will have additional escape staircases. Markku Kanerva, sales director at Deltamarin, the Finnish company designing the ship, said it would be the“safest cruise ship in the world”.
Palmer refused to answer questions about the project’s cost. Although the Titanic was the world’s largest ship in her time, she would be smaller than many of today’s modern cruise ships.
“It’s not about the money, ”Palmer said. “I’ve got enough money for it. I think that’s all that matters. ”
Forbes estimated Palmer’s net worth to be $795 million in 2012. He describes himself as a billionaire.
TitanicⅡwill be built by Chinese state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard, which has already built four ore carriers for Palmer’s mining business, he said. The contract to build TitanicⅡhas not yet been signed, Palmer said.
What’s the meaning of the underlined word“maiden”in Paragraph 4?

A.First. B.Trial. C.Second. D.Last.

What can be inferred about TitanicⅡfrom the passage?

A.TitanicⅡwill have more space in its lifeboats than the Titanic.

Recently, the TV show “Where are we going, Dad?” produced by Hunan Satellite Television is a big hit /across nation. Many famous stars brought their children to a strange village alone, and they had to spend 72 hours with their children there. The program fully showed us a modern version of the “how to be a good father”. As the  Daddy and cute kids triggered(触发)a lot of people’s emotional resonance(共鸣). Both the kids and their parents will find that their hearts are being drawn closer. But this kind of feeling has just proved that there is a big spiritual barrier between the modern parents and children.
The TV shows like “Children are hard to support!”, “Where are we going, Dad?”, “hot mom” and “cute kids” are becoming more and more popular. All of these show the new parents’ confusion in children’s education and the appeal for the balance between career and family.
In the real life, on the one hand the young parents feel helpless because they are too busy to accompany their children under the pressures of work and life; on the other hand they continue to do so. The data collected by HNTV shows that nearly two-thirds of their audience are female, among whom 36% are aged from 25 to 34.We can imagine such a scene that one evening a young mother is watching the show with her young children, while her husband is still at work or trapped in socializing, or maybe is just playing computer games in the bedroom. The story of a child without the company of father is still going on. In fact, it is sometimes the same to mothers. In a modern family, it is often the old who take the responsibility of raising a child. The participation of mother in the children’s education is also very low.
It is just this kind of confusion where the parents have gone in the modern family education, and where the parents will guide their children to go that “Where are we going, Dad?” shows us. If a child wants to grow up healthily and safely into a modern citizen with independent personality and free spirit, it is very important for him or her to follow the parents who serve as their first teacher. Maybe this is the real reason why such kind of TV programs could get hot. The truth is that children will go where their parents go; and society will go where the children go.
To raise a child in modern society, parents should ________.

A.break down the barrier between children and teachers
B.balance well between family and career
C.play computer games with their children
D.keep their children at home to avoid socializing

What does the underlined word “participation” probably mean?

A.taking responsibility B.understanding
C.taking part D.keeping company

What attitude towards modern family education does the author express in the second paragraph?

A.Optimistic. B.Indifferent.
C.Proud. D.Worried.

Which one is the best title of the passage?

A.New problems in Modern Children’s Education
B.Modern Education is Important
C.Confusion Behind “Where are we going, dad?”
D.Nanny Daddy and Cute Kids

Using too much water or throwing rubbish into our rivers are clear ways that humans can put our water supply in danger, but we also affect our water supply in less obvious ways. You may wonder how paving (铺砌) a road can lead to less useable fresh water. A major part of the water  we use every day is groundwater. Groundwater does not come from lakes or rivers. It comes from underground. The more roads and parking lots we pave, the less water can flow into the ground to become groundwater.
Human activity is not responsible for all water shortages (短缺).Drier climates are of course more likely to have droughts (干旱) than areas with more rainfall, but in any case, good management can help to make sure there is enough water to meet our basic needs.
Thinking about the way we use water every day can make a big difference, too. In the United States, a family of four can use 1.5 tons of water a day! This shows how much we depend on water to live, but there's a lot we can do to lower the number.
You can take steps to save water in your home. To start with, use the same glass for your drinking water all day. Wash it only once a day. Run your dishwasher (洗碗机) only when it is full. Help your parents fix any leaks in your home. You can even help to keep our water supply clean by recycling batteries instead of throwing them away.
Which of the following is most likely to lead to less groundwater?

A.Using river water.
B.Paving parking lots.
C.Throwing batteries away.
D.Throwing rubbish into lakes.

What can be inferred from the text?

A.It takes a lot of effort to meet our water needs.
B.All water shortages are due to human behavior.
C.There is much we can do to reduce family size.
D.The average family in America makes proper use of water.

The last paragraph is intended to ________.

A.show us how to fix leaks at home
B.tell us how to run a dishwasher
C.suggest what we do to save water at home
D.prove what drinking glass is best for us

The text is mainly about ________.

A.why paving roads reduces our water
B.how human activity affects our water supply
C.why droughts occur more in dry climates
D.how much we depend on water to live

For years, I thought that my mother would become a centenarian(百岁老人), but after 98 years and eight months, she recently died of old age. As it was with my father, her funeral took place in the most peaceful setting of the countryside of rural Washington County. Even after my father died, we continued to think of our parents as one. They were a team in the traditional sense. Church and family were their lifeline. They worked hard, never complaining. They expected to earn their daily bread by the sweat of their forehead.
Once during a conversation with Tom Brokaw, who wrote the bestselling book The Greatest Generation, I told him, “You left out my parents.” They didn’t go off to war, but they belonged to the Greatest Generation. They, too, were part of the foundation that made American truly great. They kept the home fires burning.
Our mother gloried in  being a housewife and mother. Having been a teacher in her early adult years, when education was more than important than anything else, she gave up her job to raise a family. She was an excellent cook, but she had to cook on a wood stove(火炉). There was no refrigerator, nothing electric. But nobody was ever better at making do(凑合着用). In addition to all the housework, she went to the fields every day to help produce a crop to pay the rent to provide for the family. She and my dad worked hard to save every penny possible.
They saved every penny to buy a farm late in life. They also saved enough money to live out their respective lives with home care without taking up residency in a nursing home. They were very independent. If you had suggested they accept a government transfer payment, they would have spit in your eye.
Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

A.Mother played a great part in the family.
B.Mother died at the age of 98 years old.
C.Mother was buried by the side of father.
D.Mother survived father by many years.

The underlined word “one” in the passage means ________.

A.parent B.Centenarian C.hero D.entirety

What do we know about Tom Brokaw?

A.He is one of the author’s parents’ friends.
B.He likes talking with the author’s parents.
C.He takes up a position as a writer.
D.He is good at managing a home.

How does the author find his parents?

A sunflower is a sunflower. A mobile phone is a mobile phone. But can you combine the two to do something for your local environment?
As early as next year it may well be possible. When you have finished with your mobile phone you will be able to bury it in the garden or a plant pot and wait for it to flower. A biodegradable (生物可降解的) mobile phone was, this month, introduced by scientists. It is hoped that the new type of phone will encourage consumers to recycle.
Scientists have come up with a new material over the last five years. It looks like any other plastic and can be hard or soft, and able to change shape. Overtime it can also break down into the soil without giving out any toxic (有毒的) chemicals. British researchers used the new material to develop a phone cover that contains a sunflower seed. When this new type of cover turns into waste, it forms nitrates (硝酸盐). These feed the seed and help the flower grow.
Engineers have designed a small transparent (透明的) window to hold the seed. They have made sure it only grows when the phone is thrown away.
"We've only put sunflower seeds into the covers so far. But we are working with plant experts to find out which flowers would perform best. Maybe we could put roses in next time," said one scientist.
As phone technology is developing so quickly people are constantly (经常地) throwing their mobiles away. This means manufacturers are under pressure to find ways of recycling them.
Some 650 million mobile phones have been sold this year. Most of them will be thrown away within two years, adding plastic, heavy metal and chemical waste to the environment. A biodegradable cover can offer some relief for nature, according to the scientists.
"The seed is released and the flower grows in the pot so you don't have to concern yourself with the phone when you have finished using it," said Kerry Kirwan. She leads the research team, which is based at the University of Warwick in Britain.
After you have finished using the new type of mobile phone, ________.

A.the sunflower seed will come out and flower wherever you throw it
B.the phone cover will break down easily in the soil which you bury it in
C.it will be recycled by the manufactures
D.it can recharge itself in an environmental friendly way

Which of the following is wrong about the cover of the new type of phone?

A.It can provide useful fertilizer for the sunflower seed after the mobile phone breaks down.
B.It looks like normal plastics but it can break down.
C.It can serve as the storage for the sunflower seed.
D.It makes sure the seed only grows after the phone is thrown away.

This type of research is done because ________.

A.the technology that produces mobile phones is changing rapidly
B.consumers tend to throw away their mobile phones within two years
C.nobody has ever thought of recycling mobile phones
D.producing mobile phones uses a lot of energy, so this has become a very big problem for the environment

We can infer from the story ________.

A.the new type of mobile phone is already on the market
B.the new type of mobile phone will sell extremely well
C.recycling mobile phones is increasingly important to the environment
D.other flowers may be used in the new type of cell phone

One of my fondest memories as a child is going by the river and sitting idly on the bank. There I would enjoy the peace and quiet, watch the water rush downstream and listen to the singing of birds and the rustling of leaves in the trees. I would also watch the bamboo trees bend under pressure from the wind and watch them return gracefully to their original position after the wind had died down.
When I think about the bamboo trees’ ability to bounce back or return to its original position, the word “resilience” comes to my mind. When used in reference to a person, this word means the ability to readily recover from shock, depression or any other negative situation that stretches the limits of a person’s emotions.
Have you ever felt like you are about to lose control of your emotions? Have you ever felt like you are at your breaking point? Thankfully, you have survived the experience to live to talk about it.
During the experience you probably felt a mix of emotions that threatened your health. You felt emotionally tired, mentally exhausted and you most likely bored unpleasant physical symptoms.
Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments. The next time you are experiencing one of those bad times or unhappy moments that take you close to your breaking point, bend, but don’t break. Try your best not to let the situation get the best of you.
A measure of hope will take you through the unpleasant moments. Will hope for a better tomorrow or a better situation, things may not be as bad as they seem to be. The unpleasant moment may be easier to deal with if the end result is worth having.
If the situation gets tough and you are at your breaking point, show resilience. Like the bamboo trees, bend, but don’t break!
What does the underlined word “resilience” mean in Paragraph 2?

A.The ability to overcome any difficulty.
B.The quality of hoping for a better tomorrow.
C.The quality of being brave at the breaking point.
D.The ability to recover easily and quickly from unpleasant or damaging events.

Which of the following can be inferred from the passage?

A.Life is like a bamboo tree that never breaks.
B.Whatever difficulties we may meet with in our life, we can bend, but can never break.
C.Life is a mixture of good times and bad times, happy moments and unhappy moments.
D.If you get over your breaking point, you can survive to live longer and more happily than others.

According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

A.The author was an idle child when he was living near the river.
B.We should try our best not to let our bad times get the best of us.
C.Our being likely to lose control of our emotions is common in our life.
D.We should always believe things may not be as bad as they seem to be.

Which of the following would be the best title of the passage?

A.Bend, but don’t break.
B.My wonderful childhood.
C.The bamboo trees.
D.Love the bamboo trees and your life.

This is a true story about a boy who, the world might say, was a terrible underachiever. While in the eighth grade, he failed subjects repeatedly. High school wasn’t much better; he flunked Latin, algebra, English, and received a grade of zero in physics. The boy managed to make the school golf team, but he lost the most important golf match of the season.
It’s not that his peers(同龄人) disliked this boy; it’s just that they never really seemed to notice him much. Even “Hellos” in the hall were a rarity. Out of all the failures in his life, there was something that did hold great importance to this boy, his love of drawing. Although in high school, the cartoons he submitted to the yearbook were rejected, once out of school, the boy was so sure of his artistic talent that he approached Walt Disney Studios with drawing works. I wish I could say the studios loved his work and immediately hired him, but such was not the case; another huge rejection.
Despite his lack of successes, this boy did not give up. He then decided to write his own autobiography in cartoons, about a little boy who was regarded as a loser and a nobody.
The name of this boy was Charles Schulz, the creator of the famous Charlie Brown and comic dog Snoopy.
In life, it is sometimes easy to feel like a nobody. We pass hundreds of people on the street on our way to work, or walk through a faceless crowd in a mall, and no one seems to notice or care. Deep inside, we may know we are special and unique and have lots to offer, but unless someone takes the time to look our way and give us a chance, we may feel worthless, just like Charlie Brown who couldn’t even manage to fly a kite or kick a football properly.
Just as Charles Schulz had faith in his artistic talent, so too, we must realize that nobody is a nobody. We all have special gifts and talents, and every human being is deserving and capable of being loved and appreciated.

As we grow old, we realize that we have so little time to read and there are so many great books that we’ve yet to get around to.Yet re readers are everywhere around us.For certain fans, re reading The Lord of the Rings is a conventional practice annually. One friend told me that Jane Austen’s Emma can still surprise him, despite his having read it over 50 times.
New sudden clear understandings can be gained from the process of re reading.Journalist Rebacca Mead, a long time Englishwoman in New York, first came across George Eliot’s Middlemarch at 17.Since then, she has read it again every five years. With each re reading, it has opened up further; in each chapter of her life, it has resonated (引起共鸣) differently.Mead evidenced the large number of ways in which really good books not only stand the test of repeat reads, but also offer fresh gifts each time we crack their spines. These kinds of books grow with us.
Scientists have also recognized the mental health benefits of re  reading.Research conducted with readers in the US found that on our first reading, we are concerned with the “what” and the “why”.Second time round, we’re able to better appreciate the emotions that the plot continues to express. As researcher CristelRussell of the American University explained, returning to a book “brings new or renewed appreciation of both the great book and its readers.”
It’s true that we often find former selves on the pages of old books (if we’re fond of making notes on the pages). These texts can carry us back to a time and place, and remind us of the kind of person that we were then. We’re changed not only by lived experience but also by read experience – by the books that we’ve discovered since last reading the one in our hand.
More so than the movie director or the musician, the writer calls upon our imaginations, using words to lead us to picture this declaration of love or that unfaithfulness in life.A book is a joint project between writers and readers, and we must pour so much of ourselves into reading that our own life story can become connected with the story in the book.
Perhaps what’s really strange is that we don’t re read more often. After all, we watch our favourite films again and we wouldn’t think of listening to an album only once.We treasure messy old paintings as objects, yet of all art forms, literature alone is a largely one      time delight.A book, of course, takes up more time, but as Mead confirms, the rewards make it adequately worthwhile.
The two books are mentioned in Paragraph 1 mainly to __________.

C.provide some background information
D.show the similarity between re readers

It can be learned from the passage that __________.

C.we know ourselves better through reading experience
D.writers inspire the same imaginations as film directors do
