It often seems that people have a hard time in speaking a seemingly familiar name. Did you ever have someone's name on the tip of your tongue and yet you were not able to recall it? When this happened, what did you do? Next time this happens again, what should you do?
You should not try to recall it. Instead, just do something else for a couple of minutes and then the name may come into your head. Why? The name is just there, since you have met this person and learned his name. It, waiting there, only has to be dug out. The initial(最初的) effort to recall prepares the mind for operation, but it is the subconscious (下意识的) activities that go to work to dig up a dim(模糊的)memory. Forcing yourself to recall almost never helps because it doesn't loosen your memory; it only tightens it.
That’s why students find the preparatory method greatly helpful in examinations. They read over the questions before trying to answer any of them. Then they answer first the ones of which they are most confident. At the same time, deeper mental activities in the subconscious mind are taking place; work is being done on the more difficult questions. By the time the easier questions are answered, answers to the more difficult ones will usually begin to come into consciousness. It is often just a question of waiting for recall to come to the memory.
You see, forcing ourselves to think hard to recall something usually doesn’t help. Chances are that the harder we think, the more difficulty we face in thinking of what we want to. Offering our mind time to work is what we are expected to do.
Problem |
People ______ to recall what they are sure they know. |
Solution |
They are ______ not to try to recall it immediately. They can do something else for a while _____ of thinking hard about it. |
______ |
It takes time for the subconscious activities to go to work to dig up a dim memory, in which case forcing oneself to recall can make the memory _____. |
Example |
Students find the preparatory method of great ______ in examinations. They, having read over the questions, first answer easy ones. _____, the subconscious activities are _____ to deal with harder ones. |
______ |
People should offer their mind time to work so that a dim memory can be _____ up. |
Hospital emergency rooms treat injured fingers all the time. Without treatment, a bad cut can lead to permanent damage. But how should a person know when a bleeding cut is serious enough to require medical attention?
Here are some tips from Dr. Martin Brown, chairman of the department of emergency at Inova Alexandria Hospital in Virginia.
1. Laceration (裂口)
The medical term for a cut or tear in the skin is a laceration. A long cut on a finger can likely be treated without a visit to a doctor if the wound is not very deep. However, if you have a short but deep laceration, you will need professional attention.
2. Fingertips cut off
Some injuries, like a fingertip that gets cut off, might even need surgery to repair. More often, cutting down the bone is what is done because reattaching a fingertip is often not successful.
3. Bleeding
Small cuts usually produce what is known as venous (静脉的) bleeding. This means the blood flows steadily from the injury. The bleeding will often stop when pressure is put on the wound. In most cases holding direct pressure with a clean cloth for four to five minutes would do. But if a cut appears to be pumping blood out with some force, this may be a sign of arterial (动脉的) bleeding.
Finally, always keep this in mind: even a cut that does not require medical attention must be kept clean to prevent infection. Small cuts should be cleaned gently with clean water. Then cover it with a clean, dry bandage.
A.How a wound bleeds can be a sign of how serious it is. |
B.That requires a specialist to either cut down the bone or reattach the fingertip. |
C.This kind of injury should be treated by a medical professional as soon as possible. |
D.The first signs of this disease include difficulty opening the mouth. |
E. Use a washcloth to clean the area if the wound is dirty.
F. With a cut finger, holding the hand above the heart can reduce the loss of blood.
G. The length is usually not as important as the depth.

Many have expressed concern on the Internet about the conditions of China’s underage population, wondering what these little “flowers of the motherland” into “carnivorous plants” in a country for a harmonious society.
These cases are not rare, said Xia Xueluan, professor with the Department of Sociology at Peking University, adding that juvenile crimes in China, which have decreased in recent years, are still large in number.
From 2002 to 2011, the rate of recidivism of China’s juvenile offenders at 1 percent to 2 percent, according to a white paper on judicial reform published in October of last year, which also reported drops in juvenile delinquency cases and the of juvenile offenders among the total criminal population.
However, China’s juvenile offender number is still high, standing at around 67,000 in 2011, according to the white paper.
“The national average rate of juvenile delinquency may have fallen, but in many parts of the country, youth crimes are still on the rise,” Xia said.
My daughter Chloe is starting out in college in the fall. With her newfound independence will come the newfound responsibilities of dealing with money.
Now I have a few lessons I’d like to share with Chloe, and with anyone else starting out in college.
OK, this is almost the only lesson you need. The biggest reason you get into money problems is that you spend money you don’t really have. Then you end up in the hole, and it’s hard to get out of the hole. You work too many hours to keep up with your spending. And you end up with a life that’s about nothing but trying to pay for all the spending on something you don’t really need.
Make a very simple budget (预算). It’s a terrible thing for people who’ve never done a budget, but it’s not hard. If the bills add up to more than the income, remove some bills.
Pay bills right away. If you have the money, pay the bill as soon as it comes in. You can usually do this online, but if not, it’s just a matter of writing a check, putting it in an envelope, and writing out an address — two minutes. If you let the bill paying get pushed back, it becomes a terrible thing.
That’s all you need to know. If you save when you’re in college, avoid debt, and pay bills on time, you’re golden.
A.Spend less than you earn. |
B.List your income, then list your bills. |
C.So spend less, work less, worry less, be happier. |
D.Find ways to get things done you need to get done. |
E. If you spend less than you earn, you won’t be in debt.
F. Like many young people, she hates thinking about money.
G. Do this two-minute action at once, so you don’t have to worry about it later.

Hollywood movies are regularly filled with sex and violence. They can be exciting films but sometimes all you want is a little light-hearted entertainment.
Have you heard of Bollywood? All singing, all dancing and unrealistic, it is the perfect alternative to normal Hollywood movies. Bollywood is the Indian film industry, based in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay. Yet Bollywood is the largest producer of films in the world. This year the Indian Filmgare Awards, Bollywood's Oscars, turn 50 years old.
The typical Bollywood movie usually has the following ingredients: a cup of romance, a tea-spoon of comedy, a dash of international sight-seeing, served with a huge slice of singing and dancing. There will also be one brave hero, one beautiful heroine and one baddie.
Bollywood films are full of ideal things and free of daily worries. The actors change clothes and locations within a single song. But the audience don't mind. To Indian movie lovers, especially the poor, such films are a gateway to heaven and the stars are their gods. The films take them to a magical world away from their everyday troubles. The films tell them the impossible is possible and that true love conquers all.
Behind the beautiful scenes, Bollywood still emphasizes traditional family values. In most films, if two lovers want to break an arranged marriage, they can't just run away. They must win over their parents.
Bollywood is a decent refreshing replacement for those over-stimulating Hollywood films. They will take you to a brighter, cheerier and more colorful world, where it's still cool to dance around a tree and sing a love song.
A.Bollywood has gradually won its reputation on the world stage. |
B.There is never any mention of politics, poverty or war. |
C.Most Chinese school kids have probably never seen an Indian film. |
D.Bollywood films are mostly comic romances with light-hearted incidental music. |
E. Bollywood pays great attention to traditional values.
F.The result is a fun-filled musical.
G.So if you're tired of all that Hollywood actions, check out the following Bollywood films.

Easy Ways to Keep Your Brain Sharp
Everyone is forgetful, but as we age(变老), we start to feel like our brains are slowing down a bit—and that can be a very annoying thing. Read on for some techniques worth trying.
1.
People who regularly made plans and looked forward to upcoming events had a 50 percent reduced chance of Alzheimer's disease (早老性痴呆症), according to a recent study. Something as simple as setting a goal to have a weekly coffee date with a friend will do. There's evidence that people who have a purpose in life or who are working on long or short-term goals appear to do better. In other words, keep your brain looking forward.
2. Go for a walk
Mildly raised glucose (葡萄糖) levels can harm the area of the brain that helps you form memories and physical activity can help get blood glucose down to normal levels. In fact, exercise produces chemicals that are good for your brain.
3. Learn something new
Take a Spanish class online, join a drawing club, or learn to play cards. A study found that mental stimulation (刺激) limits the weakening effects of aging on memory and the mind. But the best thing for your brain is when you learn something new and are physically active at the same time. Or go dancing with your friends.
A.Focus on the future. |
B.This can be especially harmful to the aged. |
C.It should be something like learning gardening. |
D.So take a few minutes each day to do some reading. |
E. But don't worry if your schedule isn't filled with life-changing events.
F. Luckily, research shows there is a lot you can do to avoid those moments.
G. In other words, when you take care of your body, you take care of your brain.
The Internet has opened up a whole new online world for us to meet, chat and go where we’ve never been before.
But just as in face to face communication, there are some rules of behavior that should be followed when on line. Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.
For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “Would I say this to the person’s face?” if the answer is no, rewrite and reread.
If someone in the chat room is rude to you, your instinct (本能) is to fire back in the same manner. But try not to do so. If it was caused by a disagreement with another member, try to fix the situation by politely discussing it. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.
Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, whether it’s a stupid question or an unnecessarily long answer, be kind about it. If it’s a small mistake, you may not need to say anything. Even if you feel strongly about it, think twice before saying anything. Having good manners yourself doesn’t give you license to correct everyone else. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended.
It is not polite to ask others personal questions such as their age, sex and marital status. Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, don’t ask such questions.
A.It’s natural that there some people who speak rudely or make mistakes online. |
B.You should either ignore the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. |
C.The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. |
D.Everyone was new to the network once. |
E. When you send short messages to a person online, you must say something beautiful to hear.
F. Repeat the process till you feel sure that you’d feel comfortable saying the words to the person’s face.
G. If you do decide to tell someone about a mistake, point it out politely.

A. Hard work B. Principles for success C. Active learners D. A sense of humor E. A successful sales team F. A head start |
___________
I was hired to do some training for a sales team from one of the largest companies in America. There were 16 people on this team. That year their sales (for the 16 of them) were close to 250 million — that’s right, a quarter of a billion dollars! Needless to say, it was an excellent and interesting time. I decided to learn a little bit myself, so I watched them closely to see what kind of people they were and to see what common characteristics they shared.
___________
They simply weren’t a terribly serious bunch of people. Instead, they saw that life was to be enjoyed and that means they were able to laugh a little bit. Sure, there were varying levels in this but they all had a sense of humor. They were able to laugh at circumstances, and they were able to laugh at themselves. It was quite refreshing and the most important key to their success, I’m sure.
___________
They didn’t come from families that gave them a free pass into the upper rank of the business world and they didn’t get a head start from upper outside universities. What got them to where they are now? Hard work! That’s right, another example that if you put your mind to it, work hard and get in the right situation, you can achieve great things! These folks work long hours and are disciplined in the work they do. And it is paying off.
___________
They were always occupied in the learning process. During my sessions they were attentive and listening. You could see their minds processing the information. They were asking questions and applying the material to their work and their lives. They wanted to improve in any way that they could. It was also interesting to watch them in their team meetings led by their sales manager. They were very interactive and were learning from one another. None of them was above learning from a colleague.
___________
What did I see in these successful people? The same things that can make you a success as you apply the principles to your own life: a sense of humor, hard work, and a desire to learn at every turn.
