When I was a little girl, my mom would say, “Half the fun of doing anything is sharing it with others.”   1   Friends and mates allow us to enjoy our successes and our joys, comfort us in our hard moments, and provide a mirror for us to learn more about ourselves. I’ve always looked at friends as the family we choose. They enrich our lives. As Robert Louis Steven once said, “  2
To be a good friend or partner, it’s important to be a good listener. Hear what your friend or mate has to say first rather than jump to conclusions or get defensive.   3   When they hear their words repeated back to them, it can help them to realize what they said was not exactly what they meant to say.
4 You know the old golden rule, “Care for others the way you would like them to care for you.” The support of a friend during a tough time could make the difference between success and failure. Encouragement and confidence are the gifts that can help change a person’s life.
Take care, though, with whom you choose to have close relationship, for they can have a great effect on yourself – respect and life path. As someone once told me “  5 They will either take you up or down.”

A.I am afraid so.
B.It is quite true
C.Friendship is the most important factor.
D.Sometimes it is useful to be their mirror.

E.A friend is a present which you give yourself.
F.The attitudes of your friends are like the buttons on a lift.
G.Patience, sympathy and understanding are also important qualities.

首先,请阅读下列的应用文:
A. Chapter One. …you probably have an image in your mind of what the “perfect’ or “ideal” body looks like. Try not to press yourself to look that way. Each person is born with genes that control the shape of his/her body. Everyone is different. It’s important to be comfortable with the body you have.
B. Chapter Two. …You use energy for everything you do. That energy comes from the food you eat. Too much food or too little exercise causes your body to store the extra energy in fat cells. But, if you exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, you’ll feel healthier and stronger not to mention look great.
C. Chapter Three. … Your body runs best on foods high in carbohydrates(碳水化合物) and low in fat and sugar. Eating a healthy diet will provide your body with everything it needs to run smoothly. Your body breaks down proteins into amino acids(氨基酸), so you don’t need to take in the amino acids separately.
D. Chapter Four. …Exercise does more than just burn calories. For instance, regular exercise makes your muscles strong and flexible, and increases the amount of muscle you have. It also makes your heart stronger and lowers your blood pressure; …
E. Chapter Five. …Always warm up and stretch for 5-10 minutes before you do strength or endurance exercises. Afterwards, take 10 minutes to cool down. Your heart should beat normally when you stop. Exercising with a group may help you to exercise regularly.
F. Chapter Six. …Supplementation of a mixture of essential amino acids will increase protein synthesis (蛋白质综合体). While supplementing with either carbohydrate or amino acids(氨基酸) may limit muscle damage and stimulate (激励) protein synthesis, there is increasing evidence that the combination can have an addictive effect.

When you make a mistake, big or small, cherish it as the most precious thing in the world. Because in some ways, it is.
60 . Most of us have been taught from a young age that mistakes are bad. And we are reminded that we should try to avoid mistakes. We’ve been scolded when we make mistakes — at home, school and work. Maybe not always, but probably enough times to make feeling bad about mistakes an unconscious reaction.
Yet without mistakes, we could not learn or grow.  61   . We don’t really consume information and instantly know it or know how to do it. Instead, we get information about something, from reading or from another person or from observing usually; then we construct a model in our mind, test it out by trying it in the real world, make mistakes, revise the model based on the results of our real-world experimentation and repeat, making mistakes, learning from those mistakes, until we’ve pretty much learned how to do it well.
62   . If you succeed at something, it’s probably something you already knew how to do it. You haven’t really grown much from that success — at most it’s the last step on your journey, not the whole journey. Most of the journey is made up of mistakes. By trial and error, we try out new strategies and make new discoveries, thus leading to higher payoffs. So if you value learning, if you value growing and improving, then you should value mistakes.    63

A.Just think about how we learn.
B.Everyone can make mistakes in their life.
C.Mistakes are how we learn to do something new.
D.It is natural that we are in a bad mood when we make mistakes.

E. Mistakes are amazing things that make a world of brilliance possible.

Teen peer pressure
Teen peer pressure is the influence a teen's social group has on him or her. As adolescents enter the teen years, they usually begin to focus more on their peers or friends.    Peers influence most aspects of a teen's life, including how teens dress, what music they listen to, and what kind of activities they are involved in.
Good friends can encourage teens to do well in school, get involved in positive activities, volunteer, eat healthy foods, and avoid drugs, alcohol, and other risky activities. Friends also help teens learn good social skills and better ways to communicate and work out problems.
Negative peer pressure is when teens feel pressured to do something they know is wrong, such as smoking, drinking, stealing, or cutting class.   This is because they want to be liked or fit in, they are afraid of being made fun of, or they want to try something other teens are doing.
It is important for teens to learn how to deal with peer pressure. There are a lot of things a teen can do to handle it.  Good friends use positive peer pressure to help you be your best self.  Also you need to think about the consequences of your decisions and actions, such as if an activity might harm your health or get you into trouble.  Or you can talk to your parents or a trusted adult about the kinds of peer pressure you face and listen to their advice. Remember that if just one teen stands up against negative peer pressure, usually others will join him or her, and learning to handle peer pressure gives teens more confidence.

A.Peer pressure is not always bad.
B.They always give teens good advice.
C.Teens may give in to negative peer pressure.
D.Why it is important to deal with negative peer pressure?

E. First of all, teens need to recognize negative peer pressure.
F. For example, you can choose good friends who share your values.
G. The desire to fit in with peers can be a very strong influence on teens.

Most people who move to a foreign country or culture may experience a period of time when they feel very homesick and have a lot of stress .This feeling is often called‘culture shock’   There are four general stages of cultural adjustment.
The first stage is usually referred to as the excitement stage. Upon arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture, everything will seem exciting, everyone will seem friendly and helpful and you’ll be overwhelmed(不知所措) with impressions.    and you have little meaningful experience of the culture.
The second stage is sometimes called the withdrawal stage. The excitement you felt before changes to frustration (沮丧)as you find it difficult to deal with the problems that arise. simple things like shopping and going to the bank are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious homesick.   .
Culture shock doesn’t exist long. You gradually get into the‘recovery’ stage. At this point, you’ll have a routine, and you’ll feel less lonely as you start to understand and accept the way things are done and the way people behave in your new environment. Customs and traditions are clearer and easier to understand.
The last stage is the ‘home’ stage – this is the point when people start to feel at home in the new culture.
There is a fifth stage to this process. If you decide to return home after a long period in a new culture, you may experience what is called ‘reverse culture shock’.     you may notice things about your home culture that you had never noticed before, and some of the ways people do things may seem strange.

A.It is a great challenge to learn the totally new culture.
B.This is the stage which is referred to as “culture shock”
C.During this stage you are taking in these impressions passively
D.Some people experience “culture shock” more sharply than others.

E. This means that you may find aspects of your own culture “foreign”
F. At this stage ,you’ll deal with new challenges with humor rather than anxiety.
G. It’s important to learn how to deal with it if you’re to adapt to the new culture.

B. Magazines and newspapers provide adults with critical news.

C. Being exposed to magazines and newspapers benefits you a lot.

D. Keep interesting magazine pictures to give children story ideas.

E. Magazines are valuable assets for many people, but in particular to children.

F. Magazines and newspapers are expensive now but out of style.

Magazine Articles: More Valuable Than You May Think

Parents are often surprised when teachers suggest their children read magazines. Read on to learn about the benefits that reading magazines offers to young readers and how to introduce your children to the medium.

   Magazine Benefits

Magazine articles can provide reluctant readers with a lively, breezy writing style that can inspire them to read more.

The articles in magazines are generally short, which allows a child to finish reading a feature article without losing interest due to a short attention span. The writing in magazines also tends to be easy to read, especially if it is a children's publication.

By allowing your child to read magazines at an early age, you are encouraging development of a useful skill.(1) Getting into the habit of reading periodicals as a child will foster the habit of reading news articles that may continue into adulthood.

   (2) Magazine articles challenge students to think about issues they may have never considered or cause them to rethink their world view. Information is available in a wide variety of reading levels because magazines are written for every audience imaginable. Many publications cover the same material in different writing styles that might make it easier for your child to comprehend.

   Magazine Activities

Reading magazines as a family can be used to introduce each other to the various interests that each family member possesses. When your children are finished with their magazines, encourage them to pass their issue on to a sibling or other family member.

Once each family member has finished reading each magazine, you can use them for art and writing projects. These projects are for family members of all ages:

   1. Cut out pictures to help your preschool and kindergarten children learn their alphabet, numbers, and colors.

   2. (3) Paste the picture at the top of a page and have them write a story about what is happening or what the picture represents.

   3. Clip pictures to create a collage. Many teenagers love using their artistic talents to collage.

   (4) The skills that students utilize and strengthen when reading magazines can be applied to higher level reading and other academic subjects. Encouraging your child to read by giving them a magazine subscription could cause them to take the leap from being a reluctant reader to a voracious page﹣turner.

Getting your children to study can be a little like getting them to eat their vegetables.
Make a study time and have it at the same time every day. This will help your kids to learn to schedule their day and will give them a sense of control over how they spend their time.
Allow them to study in blocks of time, such as for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle.       Ideal (理想的)study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner.
Never allow your children to study in front of the television, as that will encourage passive activity.      You’ll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. After you’ve set up a good study time for little learners, set up a good place where they can get those creative juices flowing.
Make sure there is a table or a desk and a comfortable chair.
This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with the answers to any questions. The input you give your children during study periods will help form a bond and help make studying enjoyable.

Empathy (共鸣)
Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. ____ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.
Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. ____
There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. ____ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.
Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. ____ “Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional (情感的) intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” she says.
What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. ____
To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.
Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.
That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.
“One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of  talking,” Freed says.
Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.
Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel.
Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of “emotional intelligence” that will help you succeed in many areas of life.
G.Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and having empathy is decisive to those relationships.
