Industrial pollution is not only a problem for the countries of Europe and North America but also an extremely serious problem in some developing countries. They want to introduce industries, and so they put few controls on the industries which cause pollution.
Cubatao, an industrial town of 85 000 people in Brazil, is an example of the connection between industrial development and pollution. In 1954, Cubatao had no industry. The people of the town are suffering from the poisonous matter in their environment.Birth shortcomings are extremely common. Among children and adults, lung problems are sometimes twelve times more common in Cubatao than in other places.
However,  these laws are not strict enough. It is cheaper for companies to take no notice of the laws and pay the fines(罚款) than to buy the expensive equipment that will reduce the pollution. It is clear, therefore, that economic growth is more important to the government than to the health of the workers.
However, the responsibility does not completely lie with the Brazilian government. A number of the factories in the town are owned by large companies from France, Italy, and the U. S. They are doing things in Brazil that they would not be able to do at home. If they caused the same amount of pollution at home, they would be severely punished or even put out of business.

A.So the bad effects can be clearly seen.
B.It is true that Brazil has laws against pollution,
C.For these countries, economic growth is a very important aim.
D.The pollution in Cubatao is caused by the changes of the companiess.

E.The government should play an important role in controlling pollution.
F.Today it has more than twenty large factories, which produce many pollutants(污染物).
G.The example of Cubatao shows that international companies are not acting in a responsible way either.

May the first is an important date in the college admission process in the United States. This is the last day for high school seniors to accept or reject offers of admission in the fall. But according to a recent report, there is a great change. Acceptance rates at the top colleges this year were lower than ever.
These days, college applicants are applying to more colleges because online and common applications make the process easier.          On the other hand, deciding students for top colleges to accept can be difficult because it takes much time. Students may not like being put on waiting lists. Also, common colleges work more to get the students they accept to accept them. Some colleges hold visiting days that offer a chance to attend classes and stay overnight. Some universities send gifts.        .
For many families, the most important thing colleges can do is to show them the money, especially this year; the weak economy makes parents nervous.        . The recent problems that spread from the housing market to credit markets have even affected student’s loans. So lately, top schools have to spare lots of money to increase their financial aid for students.
. The Education Department expects the number of high school graduates to start to go down. This will happen as the last of the children of the baby boom generation finishes high school. The number is not expected to start rising again until 2015.

A.Besides, top colleges are facing changes in the population.
B.What contributes to it?
C.But a mistake can be costly if it happens.
D.But top colleges ignore them.

E. They have international students who know English.
F. It can mean several acceptances to choose from.
G. They cannot afford college as planned.

Nowadays more and more foreign enterprises and companies are no longer relying on interviews for recruitment(招募). Years of studying interviewing has made it clear that it is not a very objective process. Personnel officers often hire the person they like best or even the one they think most physically attractive. Looking good is no guarantee of doing the job well.
To get a more objective view, many companies are also using psychological tests,to hire both for relatively routine job and for positions at senior levels of management. It is impossible to say how many employers use tests, but estimates of test sales in the U.K.for 2001 were over one million.
Recruitment can involve steps in two ways. Step 1 is always the same:job application. The company decides whether you might be suitable based on your qualifications and your previous job experience. Step 2 can be screening. A specific test is given at this stage to rule out those who might not be worth interviewing. Some large employers use tests—especially IQ based tests precisely to eliminate the unsuitable. Only those who pass Step 2 go to the interview. Step 2 can also be testing and interview combined. If the company thinks you might be suitable after looking at your application, they ask you to come to be tested and to be interviewed. It is seen very much as part of the same step.
Tests claim to be scientific and objective. A large body of research has shown that interviews by themselves are not very reliable as a method of selection. People's judgments are often very subjective:whether they like the look of someone counts for more than almost anything else. But reliable and valid tests can offer rapid and more objective information about wouldbe employees. If a candidate talks well in an interview but his test results suggest that he is a careless person who cannot concentrate, and employer is likely to think twice about hiring him.
Taking a serious test for a job is rather different from taking a gamelike test. You can spend just a little time answering questions of that kind of test, and you can deny the answers and say they are not accurate. But you can not go to a serious test without enough preparation since you can not afford to be denied and eliminated again and again. What can you do to do justice to yourself in tests? Here are three tips:Understand,Analyze,Practice.

Rules on how to be a fit kid
Being fit is a way of saying a person eats well, gets a lot of physical exercise, and has a healthy weight.    If you’re a kid who wants to be fit, here are three rules to live by.
1. Eat a variety of foods.
You may have a favorite food, but the best choice is to eat a variety.    Taste new foods and old ones you haven’t tried for a while. Some foods, such as green vegetables, are more pleasing the older you get. Shoot for at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day--two fruits and three vegetables.
2.
What does it feel like to be full? When you’re eating, notice how your body feels and when your stomach feels comfortably full. Sometimes, people eat too much because they don’t notice when they need to stop eating.     And over a period of time, overeating can lead to unhealthy weight gain.
3. Limit screen time.
What’s screen time? It’ s the amount of time you spend watching TV or DVDs, playing video games, and using the computer. The more time you spend on these sitting-down activities, the less time available for active stuff, like basketball, bike riding and swimming.
These rules aren’t magic. However, follow them most of the time and you can become a fit kid sooner or later.

A.Drink water and milk.
B.Listen to your body.
C.Eating too much can make you feel uncomfortable.
D.There’re a lot of discussions these days about fit kids.

E. Try to spend no more than 2 hours a day on screen time.
F. Ask your parents to help you do your favorite activities regularly.
G. If you eat different foods, you’re more likely to get the nutrients your body needs.

Know your introduction and your conclusion.
Channel your nervous energy.
Know your audience.
Use deep-breathing techniques.
Be prepared
Select an appropriate topic.

How you calm yourself before giving a speech? Both modern research and centuries of experience from experienced public speakers suggest some practical advice.
_____
Know to whom you’ll be speaking, and learn as much about your audience as you can. The more you can anticipate the kind of reaction your listeners will have to your speech, the more comfortable you’ll be in delivering your message. Be audience-centered rather than speaker-centered.
_____
You will feel less nervous if you talk about something you are familiar with or have some personal experience of. Your comfort with the subject of the speech will be reflected in your delivery.
_____
The better prepared you are, the less anxiety you will experience. Being prepared means that you have researched your topic and practiced your speech several times before you deliver it.
_____
You are likely to feel the most anxious during the opening moments of your speech. Therefore, it is a good idea to have a clear plan for how you will start your speech. Being familiar with your introduction will help you feel more comfortable about the entire speech. If you know how you will end your speech, you will have a safe harbour in case you lose your place. If you need to end your speech ahead of time, a well-delivered conclusion can permit you to make a graceful exit.
____
One of the symptoms(症状) of nervousness is a change in your breathing and heart rates. Nervous speakers tend to take short, shallow breaths. To help break the anxiety—reduce breathing pattern, consider taking a few slow deep breaths before you rise to speak.

Men lie; women lie. Husbands lie, friends lie, wives lie, and believe it or not, your mother might lie. A recent study showed that 91% of all people lie on a regular basis, and people tell at least 13 major lies a week.
Dr. Robert G. Newby, a professor of sociology, believes that men are more likely to tell lies than women. “Men are more concerned about how they present themselves in public, the impression they make on people and things like that,” he says. “Men are always trying to impress people in the work and want to make sure that their presentation of self is one that makes them look good.      .”
Women, on the other hand, Dr. Newby believes, are more private people and their relationship tends to be more interpersonal, as opposed to having to put on a public face. Women are more vulnerable and they are not as likely to try to pull the wool over someone’s eyes like men.
Psychotherapist Vesta Callender also agrees that men and women do lie differently. “  . They plan better,” Callender notes. “They create a history around the lie, and they try to project into the future what might happen if the lie is detected. With a woman, a lie has a beginning, a middle and an end.” Callender believes that men tend to lie for the moment or to get out of a situation.   .
Dr. Elmore stresses that while it is true that most people lie from time to time, one should be truthful.
.Everything that is true does not need to be said, but everything saids needs to be true.” he says.

A.Be truthful at any cost.
B.Men also lie to each other.
C.Everyone lies from time to time.
D.Women are much more careful in their lies.

E. Men think less about how the lie can be detected.
F. He lies about almost everything, even when he doesn’t have to.
G. Men are more likely to step outside of their relationships than women.

A. Who does freelancing?
B. The advantages and disadvantages of freelance
C. The definition of freelance
D. Key to freelance success
E. What is freelancing really like?
F. The best way to develop a career
______________________
Freelance is a word that goes back to medieval times when it was used to describe soldiers who sold their skills to those prepared to pay their market rate. Today it’s an increasingly common way of working for people in a range of occupations and appeals to many who feel constrained by corporate culture.
______________________
What you gain is freedom of movement, what you can lose is a sense of belonging. You can end up feeling isolated from normal support networks, because suddenly you are responsible for your own welfare, training, safety, career development, equipment, professional updating and a thousand other things. It is easy to remain unaware of these things in the relatively cosseted existence of full-time employment. So before you leap up into this exciting and potentially rewarding way of working, stand back and take a look at the risks.
______________________
Freelancing has always been a common way of working for writers, artists and performers, but the range of occupations with a substantial number of freelancers is growing steadily. Anyone with a marketable skill can choose to go it alone. Websites offer a free directory listing for those with skills to sell. Their categories include accountants, healthcare consultants, landscape architects and computer trainers. Areas of work that have problems recruiting staff are always keen to employ freelancers.
______________________
Being a freelance is different from other forms of self-employment—you still work for an employer or several employers but have to develop a completely different set of relationships with them. Employers are now your customers, you are their supplier. You have to become indispensable to them, providing solutions to their problems, some of which they may not even realize they have. In many ways you have to behave like their dream employee, being more willing and available than you may have got used to while in a “proper job”.
______________________
You also have to be aware of, and sensitive to ,the fact that you can be seen as a threat by your customer’s conventional employees, who may regard you as taking work they can do. Successful freelancing relies on the co-operation of everyone you come into contact with. Work that brings you into conflict with an existing workforce can be more trouble than it’s worth.
