In December 2020, "the Super Apple" appeared at supermarkets across China, sweeter and juicier than usual ones, without pesticide residue(农药残留).Before reaching the market, the products had been tested over 500 times.Blockchain(区块链) technology in recording farmers' actions is widely used to avoid nonstandard pesticide use.Digital technology at the apple storage helps to group apples, which can keep the stability(稳定性) in the quality. "The future of agriculture lies in the modern technology." Huang Jikun,Professor of the China Centre for Agricultural Policy at Peking University, told Beijing Review.
At China's Central Rural Work Conference in 2020,President Xi stressed that efforts must be made to increase the quality of agriculture.Xi also pointed out the importance of speeding up technologies.
China's agriculture has entered a stage of high﹣quality development,as the country is meeting people's increasing need for high standard products. So agriculture should turn to technology.
Three years ago,Yuan Longping led a program of planting rice in saline﹣alkali(盐碱) soil in areas, including Xinjiang and Heilongjiang.Through hybrid technology,Yuan's team have been able to raise improved rice for saline and alkaline soils. If China could put 6.67 million hectares of saline﹣alkali soil into rice production,it would be very likely to increase by around 30 million tons,a huge contribution to the country.
In Lushui,Yunnan Province, one can rarely see farmers working on the farm. All common tasks are completed automatically(自动化地).Data(数据) is gathered by the system to improve future production.
"More information and technology centres will be built so that basic data and big data can be improved, and technologies like 5 G and the BeiDou Satellite Navigation System can be used in the field."said Han Fujun,Deputy Chief Engineer of the Information Center of MARA.
Since 2010,the Chinese government has been organizing technology exchanges, training, field trips and other activities for the agricultural technology talents to better understand the situations of each area.

According to UNESCO,a large number of children in villages in some African countries like Kenya and Tanzania do not go to school. They have to work to make money for their family. And more than half of people in these countries live without electricity.
A company is now working to solve both of these problems. It has created a special solar(太阳的)power station, which is in the shape of a cow, called"Solar Cow".The company encourages parents in those poor villages to send their children to school by setting up Solar Cows at schools.
Just as its name suggests, the Solar Cow can charge batteries(给电池充电)called"Solar Milks".The Solar Milks provide electricity for the families.
The batteries can only be charged using the Solar Cow,so children have to go to school to get the electricity.Everyday, children put their batteries into the bottom of their school's Solar Cow.
They go to class while the batteries are being charged. At the end of the day, they take the charged batteries home.
Each fully﹣charged Solar Milk battery can charge a mobile phone three or four times,or a radio once or twice. The battery is also a flashlight, and it can provide ten hours of light."My father used to travel two to three hours to the charging shop to charge his phone, and it cost a lot," a boy said. "Colour" and "color", "favourite" and "favorite", "honour" and "honor"…Have you ever wondered why Americans spell those words without a "u"?Is it because they are lazy?

Webster spent 28 years on the project before completing the 70,000﹣word dictionary with his American﹣style spelling in 1828.He also added local words.
His dictionary was widely used in schools.Linguists believed it helped a new country achieve unity(统一)and cultural independence at a time when most people cared about political freedom.

Some children cannot wait to grow up.Because once you become an adult you are free to make your own decisions.More importantly you can do all those things that you cannot do now because you are too young. So the question is 'At what age do you really become an adult?' In the eyes of many foreigners,Chinese are the best hosts and the worst guests in the world. They're not really bad guests, but because the guest﹣host relationship(关系) in China is much different than in some western countries. It seems that they are not nice guests. And western guests sometimes look rude in the eyes of Chinese guests.
In China, guests are almost like gods(上帝).Whenever I enter a Chinese person's home, there is always fruit on the table for me,and someone is quick to bring me a cup of tea or water. In the west, generally the guest is not a god.Acting according to(根据) the host's way of doing things is usual behavior for a guest.
My wife's mother,a very kind elderly Chinese lady, doesn't smoke. When I see some of her guests smoking in her house,as a non﹣smoker,I feel unhappy.Usually I want to stop them directly(直接地),but I must realize that in China,to be a good host, she must not do that.In most North America homes,if you are a guest, and the hosts are not smokers, you should not smoke in their house. At the very least, you could ask,"Is it OK if I smoke?"But don't besurprised if the hosts say,"No,you can't smoke."In our culture,if you smoke in their home, you are a bad guest, but if they don't allow you to smoke in their house, they are not a rude host.
Guests in China also have special habits. Some western people may not adapt tothese habits very soon.Thankfully my wife is Chinese,so whenever we visit a Chinese family she tells me to buy them a gift. However, giving a gift to a host is not always necessary in my country. So,if you invite international guests to your home, don't be too surprised if they don't bring you a gift.
In China, you probably won't need to change the guest﹣host relationship very much because you will probably only be the host, and Chinese are naturally very good hosts. If western hosts invite you to their house, try not to be too surprised if their style of treating you is not what you have expected.

What's in a Name?
Many American names come from England. But where did most English names come from?
Centuries ago, most people in England had only one name﹣﹣their first name.In the 11th century, five
or six of the 50 people in a village might be named William, and it was easy to get confused. But in the Middle Ages, people found a way to describe each person exactly. If there were four Williams in one village, one might be referred to as William the son of John.A second might be called William from the hill.A third,William the blacksmith(铁匠).And a fourth,William the brown haired. In conversation, people might refer to the four Williams as William John's son,William hill,William smith, and William brown.
It was 300 or 400 years before the extra ( 附加的) names gradually developed into last names,or
surnames. They were passed on from generation to generation.By the 1300s,Robert,the son of William
smith, had the name Robert smith, even if he was not a blacksmith like his father. As the last name became widely accepted, the first letter was capitalized,as in Robert Smith.By the 15th century, most people of the upper and middle classes had surnames.
Many surnames were based on father﹣son relations. The"son of"part was added to the father's first
name, like Johnson, meaning John's son.Sometimes it was shortened to just"s",as in Jones or Evans.
Surnames like Hill described the place where a person lived. They are the most common type of surname.A third kind of surname was based on a person's job.Forester was someone who looked after the forest.
In the Middle Ages, occupation names such as Baker,Carpenter, and Miller became common. The fourth kind of surname was nickname(绰号).A man whose surname was Bear might be as fierce as a bear.
Have you ever wondered why some surnames are so common? The most common surname in the
English language is Smith.Being able to make metals(金属)into tools was an important skill in the Middle Ages, and many people were trained as blacksmiths. The most common American surnames are Smith,Johnson,William and Brown.
