Shadow puppetry (皮影戏)started during the Western Han Dynasty and it has a long history of more than 2,000 years. It used to be popular in the countryside because it was simple and cheap.

The puppets are usually made from leather (皮革)or paper. It is hard to make them. The puppet﹣makers have to take 24 steps, which include washing the leather, carving (雕刻) and painting,to make a puppet.

Just like many things that are in danger, traditional arts also face the risk of disappearing. "Many young people still think that shadow puppetry is an old﹣fashioned folk art, " said Liu Chaokan, the sixth﹣generation inheritor (继承人)of shadow puppetry in Yunnan province.

Liu understands why old art forms couldn't interest young people,so he connects new stories with the traditional form of storytelling. In a recent show based on the ancient Chinese novel Journey to the West,Baigujing dances to a Korean pop song.Popular Chinese cartoon characters, together with the modern factors (元素),are Liu's secret in getting the attention of children. "Since they couldn't understand those old stories, why don't we show them the cartoon characters they love in shadow puppetry shows?" said Liu.

To keep the old art forever young,Liu thinks they should respect (尊重)its traditions and protect the basic of the art.

You may know that more people drink coffee than tea around the world. And that, after oil, it is the second biggest traded commodity(商品). You may also know that the drink comes from beans which are first roasted and then ground. But what else do you know about this popular drink?
It is said that the story of coffee started with an Ethiopian goatherd named Kaldi. One day Kaldi was surprised to see that his goats were behaving very strangely. Instead of grazing(吃草) quietly, they were jumping around, almost dancing. He also noticed some red “cherries” from a plant that the goats were eating. He tried some himself and was surprised by the feeling of extreme happiness and excitement. He felt like dancing too!
But it wasn’t used as a drink at first - it was used as food. The coffee berries, mixed with animal fat, were used by monks to stay awake during long hours of prayer. From Ethiopia, coffee was later cultivated in Yemen and the first hot drink was developed there around AD 1000. Three centuries later Muslims were keen coffee drinkers and as Islam spread, so did coffee. Coffee houses appeared in Cairo and Mecca.
For hundreds of years the plants were protected safely. But some beans were smuggled(偷运)out of Arabia and taken to India. In the 17th century, coffee was soon grown in a new continent. From India to Indonesia, a century later the beans were once again smuggled to Brazil. Brazil is now the largest coffee producer in the world.
It was the caffeine(咖啡因)that made the goats dance and kept the monks awake. Although it is found in other soft drinks and tea, coffee has the most caffeine. In the short term, a couple of cups of coffee can prevent fatigue and delay sleep. But several cups a day, every day, can cause anxiety and restlessness.
What is the world’s biggest traded commodity?
A. Oil   B. Coffee   C. Tea
Why did the goatherd want to dance?
A. Because he liked to dance with his goats.
B. Because he found his goats behaving strangely.
C. Because he ate some red “cherries” from a plant.

C. Coffee spread as Islam spread.
Which sentence is true?

Which country grows the most tea?The answer is India. It grows three times as much as China.Which country drinks the most tea? It's neither China nor Japan. It's Great Britain.

In the wild, tea plants may be 9 meters tall. But a plant grown for market is pruned.Pruning keeps the plant only 0.9 or 1.2 meters tall. This is an easy height for tea picking.Only the two top leaves and bud(芽)of each new shoot are picked. So to make money, tea plantations (种植园) must be huge.

In general, there are two kinds of tea:black tea and green tea.Black tea is fermented (发酵).In the process, the tea loses nearly all of its healthy parts.Green tea is steamed (蒸) right after the leaves are picked.Green tea keeps its healthy parts. For example,it may prevent heart illness.

How did we get tea bags? The answer:by accident.Tea businessmen used to send samples(样品)in tin(锡)boxes. This was very expensive. One businessman thought of a cheaper way.He sent samples in small silk bags.Customers would open the bag. They would make tea as usual. One customer put the bag into a pot. Then he just poured hot water over it.And the tea bag was born.

Shen Nong was the first to drink tea.He was a Chinese emperor. This was about 2737 B.C.Shen drank several cups of hot water daily. One day something happened.Leaves from a wild tea tree fell into the hot water pot.The next cup was poured. The water was now colored.Shen tasted it.He liked it.He drank it all.Shen was proud of his new drink. He served it to his guests.Word spread.People thought this way:tea is good enough for the Emperor,so it must be good enough for the people.Tea became the drink of China.

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the guqin, one of the four arts-along with game of go,calligraphy(书法)and painting. It first appeared over 3,000 years ago and stands for China's solo musical instrument tradition.
