After leaving school for many years, a group of graduates (毕业生) visited their teacher. All of them complained about problems and stress in their work and life.

The teacher went to the kitchen and returned with a large bottle of coffee and many kinds of cups﹣china (瓷), plastic and glass. He told them to help themselves to the coffee.

When all the students had a cup of coffee in their hands, the teacher said, "If you noticed, all the nice﹣looking and expensive cups had been taken, but the simple and cheap ones had been left behind. Although it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source (根源)of your problems and stress. In fact, the cup itself adds no quality to the coffee. It is just a tool to contain (容纳) what we drink."

What all of them really wanted was coffee, not the cups, but they all went for the best cups. And then they began to watch others' cups. Life is the coffee; jobs, money and the social position are the cups. The cups we have do not change the quality of our life.

Sometimes, if we only pay attention to the cup, we will fail to enjoy the coffee.

Depending on yourself

Growing up is not always easy. When we face difficulties, a spirit of depending on yourself is more useful than crying for help. That's what Hong Zhanhui's story of growing from boy to man with family hardship tells us.

Hong was born in 1982in a poor family in Xihua County (县), Henan Province. When he was only 11, his father became badly ill and one day he came back with an unwanted baby girl. A year later, Hong's mother left home. She no longer wanted to live such a poor life and face her sick husband. So everything hard fell onto the young boy's shoulders: to take care of his father and the sister Chenchen, and to go on to study.

Although his life was hard, Hong didn't go away from his father and sister. He worked in part﹣time jobs to feed his family. He climbed tall trees to get birds' eggs for his sister. He walked two hours at weekends to the market to buy different things to sell around his school. A few years later, he studied at a college. To take care of Chenchen, he worked hard to rent (租) a room near his college for her, and sent her to school.

After Hong's story went public, he became a hero in people's eyes. But Hong refused offers from others. He said he felt encouraged by kind offers, but he could depend on his own work.

Through his hard life, he has grown up from boy to man.

Five things to do before you are 18

Camp out in the garden

Go into your garden or your friend's. Two or three friends, a small tent, sleeping bags, food and drink are necessary. When it gets dark, tell thrilling stories, play games and eat your sweets. You will need a torch or you won't be able to see sweets, and it might get a bit too scary.

Learn to swim

Seriously, this is so important that it could save your life. 1 If you can't swim you won't be able to do water sports. Even taking a boat trip will be dangerous.

Life is competitive ﹣ some kids can do something faster or better than other kids. This might not seem fair, but all people are different and how well you can do something is different to others. This means there are "winners" and "losers", and lots of people are neither winners nor losers but in﹣between. You can choose to be a good winner or an even better loser whether you are competing against others or yourself.

   Being a "good" winner

No one likes a "show off".

No one likes someone who takes all the praise for the efforts of a team.

No one likes people who put others down to make themselves look good.

To be a good winner you need to:

   ◆Be modest(谦虚的).

◆ Thank those who helped you for their efforts.

◆ Keep trying to improve your skills.

◆Aim for the next step up in whatever you are doing well.

   Being an even better loser

Of course it's disappointing to lose, especially if you are close to winning. Behaving badly or angrily, name﹣calling and going on about things being "unfair" won't change the final result and will only make you look like a bad sport. And no one likes bad sports either.

To be an even better loser you need to :

◆ Behave politely, nicely and kindly.

   ◆ Congratulate the other team.

◆ keep any negative (消极的) thoughts to yourself ﹣ at least until you are away from the game. It's Ok to let out your negative thoughts to your best friend or parents later. And if you don't do very well in a game, try harder to learn for the next one. Improving yourself makes you a winner too.

(1)What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.

We are either losers or winners.

B.

We should face winning and losing properly.

C.

We can do nothing about winning and losing.

D.

We are always competing with others not ourselves.

(2)What should a better loser do when losing?

A.

Let out his anger to his parents at once.

B.

Express his negative feelings in the game.

C.

Try harder to improve himself in the next game.

D.

Behave badly to his team members or competitors.

(3)Which one is not proper if we succeed?

A.

Going on improving our skills.

B.

Telling our team members to aim higher.

C.

Thanking our team members for their efforts.

D.

Cindy shows her congratulations to other competitors even if she fails.

(4)Who is probably a bad sport?

A.

Tom keeps saying the game is unfair when he loses.

B.

Jim encourages his teammates after their team loses.

C.

Anna thanks her coach for what he has done though she fails.

D.

Cindy shows her congratulations to other competitors even if she fails.

(5)What is the passage written for?

A.

Telling us what we can learn from losing.

B.

Offering advice on what we can do to win.

C.

Encouraging us to become a winner instead of a loser.

D.

Giving advice on how to deal with winning and losing.

Trees are one of the oldest "citizens" of our earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.

Just like us,trees change a lot as they grow.At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to grow up safely. For example, many trees grow thorns to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.

When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.

It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade, oxygen and natural beauty. It is also a great place for a tree house,or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.

Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die.At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home for small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.

In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees and look after the trees!

For example, if you lean to understand others' feelings and problems, you will understand the people you work with much better instead of getting angry. And you will learn to talk about problems and be more patient with people you don't agree with﹣a friend, or a mate in your workroom or company.
