Several weeks ago, our headmaster, Mr. Gaudi, told us that our school had been chosen to compete on Smart Aleck—a game show which my best friend Carla and I   16   love. Carla has a good imagination, and I know a lot of history, so we thought we’d be good   17  for the team.
A few days later, Mr. Gaudi held a meeting with everyone interested in the   18  . He told us that Smart Aleck uses a five-member team. He also said that three more people would be needed as backup(替补).  19  , four times that many students were at the meeting. So Mr. Gaudi said we would have a   20  and the top eight scorers(得分者) would become the team and the backup. Everybody agreed that this was a   21  way to decide.
Yesterday, all of the hopefuls went to the dining hall after school. We would have to decide the starting line-up(阵容). Mr. Gaudi acted as the host. After a few hours, all the   22  on the team were chosen except one. Carla and I tied(打成平手) for that last position. We had to hold a one-on-one competition   23  the two of us. The winner would be on the team and the loser would be the backup.
Midway through our two-person competition, I was starting to pull ahead(领先).  24  I saw the look on Carla's face. I waited for a second and knew what I had to do. As much as I wanted to be on Smart Aleck, Carla wanted   25  even more. So, starting with my next question, I held back and let Carla   26  , just by a little bit. She felt sorry for my not being on the team as she   27  she would be on the show. And since I will go as backup, I’ll still have the fun of   28  the show up close.
Was I cheating(欺骗) by not trying as hard as I could? I don’t think so. No one noticed, and Carla and I didn’t   29  it. It won’t hurt the team   30  Carla will be a very good competitor on the real show. I think that making my best friend happy was the right thing to do.

Did you know that 11,000 people die every day from smoking? Did you know that people die every day from breathing smoke         other people’s cigarettes?
Tobacco smoke has 43 ingredients that may         cancer. If smokers had learned these
when they were young, they probably would never have started smoking.
Most smokers try         first cigarette when they are teenagers. Often, they start smoking because they think that it makes them look more         . Sometimes they start smoking because their friends tell them that it’s cool. If teenagers are told that half of them will die before the age of 65 from smoking cigarettes, how can they still think it’s cool to smoke?
One of the biggest problems is cigarette advertisements. Tobacco companies         tell the truth to teenagers about cigarettes. After watching the advertisements on TV or looking at the posters in which people ride horses or play in a rock band, young people often think that smoking       be cool.
Sadly, cigarettes are very difficult to         once a person has started smoking. Most teenagers start smoking          they are influenced by friends or cigarettes advertisements. And often, the teenagers regret the decision to start smoking later in life.
Teenagers need to know         bad cigarettes are for their health. If they are told that cigarettes kill more people than guns do, they probably will never start smoking.

What’s your idea about success? Some people say that beginners have all the luck, while others believe that success        only with practice. In fact, I fell both of these statements are not true all the time. Each is true in some ways        not in others.
For example, I went to a drawing competition many years ago and         surprisingly. As a prize, I got a film ticket to see “Titanic”. I was really         because it was the first time I had taken part in any competition, Thinking that I might be lucky again, I          joining in other art competitions, ‘But the result was that I         won again. I accepted the fact that the other people had a          artistic ability than I did. Art was not something I was especially interested in and I had never practiced the different art skills. So, the         I produced were not of a very high standard
These experiences taught me a lot. Though I might have been lucky        , I also need to put in hard work. As we know,        akes perfect. So I believe success builds on less luck and chance.

At present, almost everyone has a mobile phone, but have you ever thought that cell phones       be bad for your health? A study shows that heavy mobile phone use may cause hearing loss(失聪).
This study shows that people who use cell phones for about an hour a day have a        time hearing some similar sounds, especially in their right ears. It is getting harder for        to tell the difference between the sounds of“s”and“f”,and“t”and“z”.
Researchers studied 100 people who used cell phones and        them with 50 people who did not. The study lasted for 12 months. What the researchers found was that cell phone users had more hearing        than those who did not use cell phones.
Besides this, our ears have many little        inside them. Too much noise will cause these hairs to get weak and        die. When these hairs die, it affects our ability to listen.
However, cell phone users don’t care too much        this study. One man said,“I’d be more worried about people who        MP3 players. They put those earphones in their ears and listen to very        music. I think that is more likely(更有可能的) to cause hearing loss than a cell phone.”

Leaving high school, I had to choose a career path—medicine or business—before college started in three months, but I couldn’t decide. Both my uncles suggested I work for a month in a          followed by a month in a hospital before I could know what to do. It seemed like a good idea.
Then near the end of two months, I began thinking about my two         . The bank had offered better working conditions. The hospital was full of excitement, but the training was hard. It seemed that the choices of          was going to run out.
The Last day of my work at the hospital, I was          home when I saw a boy hit by a bus and lie in the road as the bus run away.         stopped. I know if the boy stayed there, he would die very soon. So, without help, I lifted him into my car.
The next day, I went to see him. His family were sitting around his bed. The doctor introduced me as “the person who saved the boy’s life”. Everyone got up, with          smiles on their faces. The mother held my hands to her face, repeating again and again, “See, you are an angel!”
What a feeling this was, to help save the life of another person!           , I knew I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I went to college for my medical studies.
