Why is setting goals important? Because goals can help you do, be, and experience everything you want in life. Instead of just letting life happen to you, goals allow you to make your life happen.
Successful people      how their life should be and set lots of goals. By setting goals you are taking control of your life. It’s like having a        to show you where you want to go. Think of it this way. There are      drivers. One has a destination(目的地)in mind (her goal) which can be found on a map. She can drive straight there without any wasted time or wrong turns. The other driver has no goals or destination or map. She starts off at the same time from the same place as the first driver,     she drives aimlessly around, never getting anywhere, just using up gas (汽油). Which driver do you want to be?
Winners in life set goals and follow through on them. They decide what they want in life and then get there by making     and setting goals.   people just let life happen by accident. Goals aren’t difficult to set—and they aren’t difficult to reach. It’s up to you to find out what your goals really are. You are the one who must        what to achieve and in what direction to aim your life. Research tells us that when we write a goal down, we are more likely to achieve it. Written goals can be reviewed regularly, and have       power. Like a contract(契约) with        , they are harder to forget. Also      you write your goals in a sepecial way, you are able to make yourself continuously aware of situations that will bring you nearer to your goal.

The One Moment
A large crowd of anxious teenagers tried to crowd into the huge building all at once, but, of course, were unsuccessful. I got out of my mom’s silver Volvo and        in the middle of the parking lot, examining the old building. What was beyond those        , red double doors? I didn’t have an answer. My feelings were indescribable. I was nervous, but         at the same time. Knots(结) were turning inside my stomach. My curiosity was getting the better of me. I got the          to walk up to the doors, but I couldn’t open them just yet. I had to pause (stop) and        . Whatever lay beyond those doors could change my         forever! I didn’t know what the results would be. I wasn’t sure that I wanted to imagine them      . My trembling arm         and took hold of the handle. A gust of wind blew into my face       I opened the door. My heart was           rapidly and I stopped breathing. I stepped forward with my right foot and the door shut           me. The nervousness left my stomach, but the excitement         with me. I had finally entered high school. I had been waiting for this moment my whole life.

My Unexpected Teacher
One cold, rainy evening last October, I was going to interview an old lady in the hospital to gather information for my medical thesis(论文).
The old lady was lying on bed 4B. I sat down on a chair next to her bed, and in a low voice I introduced myself and asked how she was doing. She         _replied that she was getting better. When I told her that I wanted to gather some information from her, she agreed.
After I finished the questionnaire, I prepared to leave so I could get more medical records. Before I could get up, the old lady spoke up in her         _voice, “I haven’t seen you before, Doctor. Are you new?”
“Not really, ma’ma. It’s just that I don’t come here every day,” I replied. She started       _, asking where I was from and why I was working so late in the evening. I was surprised someone in her condition would want to talk.
“Doctor, do you think I can get back to my normal life?” the old lady asked at one point.
I replied that while I didn’t know much about her case, I could tell her what I had learnt about the recovery of the patients of her kind. However, I was unwilling to go into too much detail         _I was only a medical student.
The old lady started talking about herself. She shared her difficulties and sufferings, talked about her husband, who was killed in a car accident, and her struggle to earn money. All I did was to nod my head as a way of showing my sympathy(同情).
_, I discovered that the old lady had been allowed to go out of the hospital as her condition had improved, though she would still need treatment.
The old lady taught me one of the most important         _ a doctor can learn. Sometimes patients do not need expensive treatment. They just need someone with the patience and willingness to lend an ear to them and spend some time to be with them.

When one door of happiness closes, another opens. However, we often look at the            door so long that we can’t see the one that has been opened for us. It’s true that we don’t know            we’ve got until we lose it, and it’s also true that we don’t know what we’ve been          until it goes away.
Giving someone all your         doesn’t mean that they’ll love you back. Don’t expect love in return. Just         for it to grow in their hearts.
There are many moments in life when you miss someone so much that you want to bring them into your               and hug them for real! Dream what you want to dream, go where you want to go, and          what you want to be,         you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.
Happiness lies in those who have cried, those who have been hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried, for only they can understand the         of their lives. The          future will always be based on a forgotten past. You can’t go on well in your life until you let your past failure and heartaches go.

It was a cold afternoon in winter. My oldest son, Stephen, was at school, and Reed, my husband, at work. My          little ones were sitting around the kitchen table. Tom was perfecting a paper plane, while Sam was          on an oil painting.
But Laura, our only daughter, sat quietly and was          in her project. Every once in a while she would ask how to          the name of someone in our family, then carefully form the letters one by one. Next, she would add flowers with small items. She finished off each with a sun in the upper right hand corner. Holding them at eye level, she let out a long sigh (叹息) of        .
“What are you doing, Honey?” I asked. She looked quickly at her brother before looking back at me. “It’s a          .” she said, covering up her work with her hands.
Next, she put her work into a box. When she had finished, she disappeared up the stairs.
It wasn’t until later that evening that I            a “mailbox” taped onto the doors to each of our bedrooms. There were little notes saying that she loved all of us. She hadn’t          Sam or baby Paul. They are pages of colored scenes including flowers with happy faces. “He can’t read yet,” she whispered (低声说), “         he can look at the pictures.” Each time I received one of my little girl’s gifts, it          my heart. I was touched at how carefully she paid attention to what wrong happened to us. When Stephen lost a baseball game, there was a letter telling him she thought he was the best ballplayer in the whole world. After I had a          day, there was a message thanking me for my efforts.
This same little girl is grown now, driving off every day to the state college, but some things about her have        changed. Yesterday I found a love note next to my bedside. “Thanks for always being there for me, Mom,” it read, “I’m glad that we’re the best friends.”
There are angels among us. I know I live with one.

Peter kept his eyes on the grounds. He felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders as he walked home alone. It was the        day of his life. His       would not stop thinking about what happened only just an hour ago on the soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? He had let his whole team down.      stupid mistake made him angry. His team had lost the game because of him. He was really worried that his coach might kick him off the team.
he walked through the door, his father asked, “ What’s wrong, son?” Peter’s feeling were         all over his face. “I lost the game,” Peter replied. Then he went into his room         a        another word. Ten minutes later, Peter heard his father knocking on his bedroom door. He opened the door to let him in.
“Look, Peter. I don’t know what happened. But whatever it was, don’t be too        on yourself.”

“Soccer is about team      . You’re not the only reason your team lost. If you have a good team, you should support each other. Besides, winning or losing is only half the game.          half is learning how to communicate with your teammates and learning from your mistakes.
Peter didn’t say anything, but what his father said made him think carefully.
The next day, Peter went to soccer practice with          rather than fear in his heart. “Hey, guys” he said to his teammates. “I’m really sorry about yesterday. We were so         to winning that game. But I think if we      to pull together, we’re going to win the next one.”
To his surprise and relief, his teammates all nodded in agreement.
“Yeah,” they said, “don’t worry about it. It’s never just one person’s fault. We should think about                 we can do better next time.”
Peter smiled. It made him feel lucky to know that he was on a winning team.
