Life is competitive ﹣ some kids can do something faster or better than other kids. This might not seem fair, but all people are different and how well you can do something is different to others. This means there are "winners" and "losers", and lots of people are neither winners nor losers but in﹣between. You can choose to be a good winner or an even better loser whether you are competing against others or yourself. Being a "good" winner No one likes a "show off". No one likes someone who takes all the praise for the efforts of a team. No one likes people who put others down to make themselves look good. To be a good winner you need to: ◆Be modest(谦虚的). ◆ Thank those who helped you for their efforts. ◆ Keep trying to improve your skills. ◆Aim for the next step up in whatever you are doing well. Being an even better loser Of course it's disappointing to lose, especially if you are close to winning. Behaving badly or angrily, name﹣calling and going on about things being "unfair" won't change the final result and will only make you look like a bad sport. And no one likes bad sports either. To be an even better loser you need to : ◆ Behave politely, nicely and kindly. ◆ Congratulate the other team. ◆ keep any negative (消极的) thoughts to yourself ﹣ at least until you are away from the game. It's Ok to let out your negative thoughts to your best friend or parents later. And if you don't do very well in a game, try harder to learn for the next one. Improving yourself makes you a winner too. |

Trees are one of the oldest "citizens" of our earth. They keep our air clean, reduce noise pollution, improve water quality and provide food and building materials.
Just like us,trees change a lot as they grow.At 1 to 3 years old, young trees learn how to grow up safely. For example, many trees grow thorns to warn animals not to go near. Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.
When trees are 4 years old, they begin to grow very rapidly and become strong enough to face challenges later in life. At the age of 15, trees become young adults. They grow more slowly and begin to produce flowers and fruit.
It is not until the tree is 20 to 25 years old that it becomes a real adult. The tree reaches its largest size. The adult tree gives us shade, oxygen and natural beauty. It is also a great place for a tree house,or a place for us to read a book, listen to music and so on. If we give the adult tree proper care, it will go on to live healthily for many years.
Gradually, trees begin to grow older and older and even die.At this time, they still have their important place in nature. When a tree becomes hollow or part of it becomes dead, it provides a home for small animals and is a source of food for many other animals.
In many ways, the life of a tree is similar to our own life experience. When we are looking at the life of a tree, we learn that each period of life brings its own form of joy and challenge. Enjoy every minute of the life of the trees and look after the trees!

When the great library of Alexandria burned, the story goes, one book was saved. But it was not a valuable book, and a poor man got it.
The book wasn't very interesting, but between its pages there was something very interesting indeed. It was a thin strip of vellum(羊皮纸)on which was written he secret of the "Touchstone".The touchstone was a small pebble(鹅卵石)that could turn any common metal into pure gold.
The writing explained that it was lying among thousands and thousands of other pebbles that looked exactly like it.But the secret was this:The real stone would feel warm, while ordinary pebbles are cold.
So the man sold his house, bought a tent, camped on the seashore, and began testing pebbles. He knew that if he picked up normal pebbles and threw them down again because they were cold, he might pick up the same pebbles hundreds of times. So,when he felt one that was cold, he threw it into the sea. He spent a whole day doing this but none of them was the touchstone. Yet he went on and on this way. Pick up a pebble.Cold﹣throw it into sea. Pick up another. Throw it into the sea.The days stretched into months and the months into years.
One day, however, about midafternoon, he picked up a pebble and it was warm. He threw it into the sea before he realized what he had done. He was used to throwing each pebble into the sea as soon as he picked it up. So when the one he wanted came along, he still threw it away.
So it is with opportunity(机会).Unless we are vigilant,it's easy to fail to realize an opportunity when it is in hand and it's just as easy to throw it away.

You may not realize it,but you are doing much more than just studying when you are at school.School is also the place where you learn to get on well with people. But this is not always easy. What can you do if you just don't like one of your classmates?
If you discover that you have problems getting on with your classmates or friends, the most important thing to learn is tolerance.Tolerance is the ability to realize and respect the differences in others. We can not change the way that other people do,so it is important to learn to live happily with them.
Tolerance will make everyone get on better with each other.Getting to know someone may help you understand why they do things differently.Something different does not exactly mean that it is bad.Tolerance teaches us to keep a temperate and open mind.
You need to remember an old saying,"Treat others how you want to be treated".If you tolerate something,it does not mean that you have to like it.No one is asking you to change who you are or what you believe in.Tolerance just means that you should respect the differences in others and not try to make them change.
It is important to practice tolerance, because it will make everyone's life easier.Learn to accept people for their different abilities and interests. The world is very different, and practicing tolerance in your own school and city can help make a difference.

A group of old classmates, who have succeeded in their work, got together to visit their teacher.Their conversation soon turned to complaining(抱怨)about the stress(压力)in their work and life. The teacher went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and many cups. Some of the cups are expensive and lovely, but some are cheap and not beautiful. The teacher told them to help themselves to the coffee.
When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the teacher said,"Have you noticed all the nice﹣looking expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the cheap ones?it's OK for you to want only the best for yourselves, but that is why you have the stress in your work and life even if you're very successful now."
"All of you really wanted the coffee, not the cups, but you chose the best cups and were eyeing each other's cups."
"Now think about this, life is the coffee, and money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold life. They do not change the quality (质量)of life.Sometimes,we just care about the cups, and we fail to enjoy the coffee. So,don't let the cups drive you, enjoy the coffee instead."

Alice spends her summer vacations walking back into history.Alice is 15 and she is a guide who shows visitors around the Fort (城堡)Delaware Museum in New York."This year.I spun wool (纺毛线) on a spinning wheel.Last year,I was a candle maker. My first year,I cared for the garden and looked after the animals. All the jobs I've had at the fort have been really fun."
Fort Delaware is a living﹣history museum that shows how life was in frontier (边远地区) America in the mid﹣1700s."Reading about history can't compare to experiencing it for yourself",says Alice.
The experience begins as soon as visitors enter the fort. The smell of wood smoke fills the air.Women in petticoats (long skirts) and men in knee breeches (knee﹣length shorts) are busy with their chores. The guides show visitors how the settlers (移民) would have carried out everyday work."Kids are surprised when I tell them that one of their jobs would have been to make candles, says another guide,16﹣year﹣old Jane."They don't realize the kids back then had to work hard."She also shows visitors how to play with toys and games.
They are playing historical parts,so the guides can't wear shorts or T﹣shirts when the weather is hot.But the clothes of the past can easily change modern kids into people from the 18th century,"The clothes felt strange at first, but it does make it easier to get into characters."says Jane.
Working at the fort has helped Jane to appreciate her life even more.Alice agrees,"The fort has taught me how hard life was and how much work there was every day.We are so lucky with everything we have now.Life wasn't always this easy."
