①He was 11 years old and went fishing every chance he got at his family's small house on an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.

②On the day before the bass(鲈鱼)season opened, he and his father were fishing early in the evening, catching sunfish and the bass with worms. Before long, when his fishing pole doubled over, he knew something huge was on the other end. His father watched him with admiration as the boy skillfully worked the fish alongside the bank and he very successfully lifted the exhausted fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.

③The boy and his father looked at the handsome fish, the fish jumped up and down in the moonlight. The father looked at his watch. It was 10 P. M.﹣two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, then at the boy. "You will have to put it back, my son." he said." I have never seen such a big fish before." cried the boy" There will be other fish." said his father. The boy looked around the lake. No other fishermen or boats were anywhere around in the moonlight. He looked again at his father. Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he caught the fish, the boy could tell by his father's voice that the decision couldn't be changed. He slowly worked the hook out of the lip of the huge bass and lowered it into the water.

④That was 34 years ago. And he has never again caught such a beautiful fish as the one he landed that night long ago. But he does see the fish again and again﹣every time he comes up against a question of ethics(伦理). For, as his father taught him, ethics are simple matters of right and wrong. Once my mother told me a story. In Africa, when an antelope (羚羊) wakes up every morning, the first thing it thinks about is, "I must be able to run faster than the fastest lion, or I will be killed."(1) the first thing the lion thinks about is,"I must be able to catch the slowest antelope, or I will starve to death." So, almost at the same time, they get up and start running toward the rising sun.

This is life: full of chances and challenges.(2) For students, it is just the same. If we do not study hard, sooner or later, we will fall behind the other students. At first, I did not know what the word "exam" meant. Later, I knew an exam was a kind of competition. In competitions, there are always winners and losers. As I grew up,I got to know competition well.(3)

Each time I saw children playing games, and heard their laughter,I wished I were that age again.(4) So I picked up my pen and began to study hard again.

I was still not sure what competition really meant. One day, I was taking part in an English﹣speaking competition. When I went to the stage, I saw other students looking at me kindly.(5) It is not as cruel as my teacher and parents told me. In fact, competition is the opposite: it is kind and necessary.

A. When a lion wakes from his dream

B. I suddenly knew what competition was

C. There must be competitions in one' s life, so people can improve

D. However, I remembered my parents' words, "You must work very hard in order to have a good future."

After ten minutes' driving,we stopped the car and got out.Walking along a path,we turned at a comer.Gradually, the peace and silence of the place began to fill my mind. From the top of the mountain,I saw several fields full of flowers, shining like a carpet (地毯)before us.It looked as if the sun spilled (播洒)gold down the mountain.

A lot of questions came to my mind.Who created such beauty? Why?How?

We often reach a point in our life when we should be ready for change that will help us unlock our self﹣improvement power. However, there's always something staring at us right under our nose but we don't see it. The only time we think of unlocking our self﹣improvement power is when everything gets worst.

When do we realize that we need to change diets? When none of our shirts and jeans would fit us. When do we stop eating candies and chocolates? When all of our teeth have fallen off. When do we realize that we need to stop smoking? When our lungs have gone bad. We see the warning signs and signals when things get rough and difficult.

The only time most of us ever learn about unlocking our self﹣improvement power is when the whole world is falling apart. We think and feel this way because it is not easy to change, but change becomes more painful when we ignore(忽视) it.

Change will happen, like it or hate it. At one point or another. we are all going to finally unlock our self﹣improvement power not because the world says so,but because we realize it's for our own good.

Happy people don't just accept change; they embrace (拥抱)it. Unlocking our self﹣improvement power means unlocking ourselves out of the box of thought that is just the way we are. It is such a poor excuse for people who fear change.

Jane always tells everyone that she doesn't have the courage to be around groups of people. She heard her family tell the same things about her to other people. Over the years, that is what Jane has believed. Every time a great crowd come, she steps back and locks herself up in a room. Jane not only believes in her story, but lives it!

Self﹣improvement may not be everybody's favorite word, but if we look at things in a different way, we might have greater chances of enjoying the whole process instead of counting the days until we are fully improved. Three sessions in a week at the gym would result in a healthier life. Reading books every day would build up knowledge. And only when we are enjoying the whole process of unlocking our self﹣improvement power will we realize that we're beginning to take things light and become happy.

(1)The writer mentions the three questions in Paragraph 2 to show that

A. we learn our lessons when we experience pain.

B. we are responsible for the problems we meet.

C. life fails us when we get into the wrong way.

D. life is a long journey full of ups and downs.

(2)What is the key to solving Jane's problem?

A. She needs to remember why she started.

B. She has to know how to get on with people.

C. She has to realize she is not what she is in her story.

D. She needs to understand the importance of confidence.

(3)The writer probably agrees that

A. the world tells us how to improve ourselves.

B. people change when they find it easy to do that.

C. welcoming change in life is a drive to become better.

D. enjoying the process of self﹣improvement makes life simpler.

(4)Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

Once a king got two nice falcons(猎鹰) from his son. He had never seen such beautiful falcons

before. He loved them so much and he ordered the best falconer to train them to fly.

After several months, the king came to see how the training was going on. He found that one falcon had already been able to fly high in the sky, while the other one was staying on the branch(树枝) of a tree quietly without moving.

The king called all his falconers together and ordered them to try every way they could to make it fly. But none of them succeeded. One day, while the king was taking a walk in the forest, an idea came to his mind. He decided to find someone who knew the natural environment well to solve the problem. Then he sent for a farmer who lived in the forest into his palace to train it at once.

The next morning, the king saw the other falcon flying above in the sky freely. "It is unbelievable!" shouted the king. "How could you make it happen?"

The farmer replied, "It's very easy. I just cut off the branch where the falcon rested." It is always the same to humans. We all have "two flying wings in our hearts as well, but we often seem not to notice them and stay where we feel safe and comfortable. We won't realize we can fly so high and freely until the "branch" we are resting on breaks.

(2)Why did the king ask the farmer to train the falcon?
