Possible Earth﹣Like Planet Next Door?

Scientists say they discovered an earth﹣like planet outside our solar system (太阳系). It is a planet that could support life.

This planet is just 4.2light years away from us. It is so close that space scientists have considered it as a next door neighbor. They say it could be reached by an unmanned spaceship before the end of the century ﹣﹣ in time for people alive today to see it.

An international team of scientists found the planet moving around the star called "Proxima Centauri". The result came out last month from the scientific magazine Nature.

Scientists have long thought that a planet with water is important for life. And it has to be neither too hot nor too cold. The newly﹣discovered planet is a little larger than earth Scientists have named it Proxima B. It moves around its sun, Proxima Centauri, once every 11days.

American scientists have been using instruments for years to look for earth﹣like planets. In 2013, scientists' best guess was that there are about one billion (1,000million) "earths" in space.

Alan Boss is the chairman of a group for outer space research. He said that Proxima B not only confirms (确认) the discovery of a planet, but also increases the number of other possible"earths" greatly.

Boss said it is possible, even likely, that most stars have at least one earth﹣like planet, which he considers surprising.

So from the early number of a billion, this new research suggests there may be as many possible earth﹣like planets as there are stars in the Galaxy (银河系). That is, anywhere from 250billion to 500billion "earths".

This makes the possibility of living things increasingly likely Boss said he believes human beings will be able to show that there is life in places besides earth in his lifetime. "I am 65," he said, "but I expect to still be alive when it happens."

(1)When will it be possible for an unmanned spaceship to reach Proxima B?____

A.

In about eighty years.

B.

In about 4. 2years.

C.

In about eleven days.

D.

In about one billion years.

(2)In the fourth paragraph, the writer thinks that ____ is necessary for life.

A.

water

B.

light

C.

air

D.

wind

(3)What does the underlined word "This" stand for in the last paragraph?____

A.

Scientists have discovered an earth﹣like planet last month.

B.

There are far more earth﹣like planets than people thought.

C.

Proxima B is not far from earth and is just like our neighbor.

D.

The Galaxy will be the only place for living things to live in.

(4)What does Alan Boss mean by saying "but I expect to still be alive when it happens"? ____

A.

His health is in good state and he's sure he will live a long life.

B.

Science is developing much faster than ever in recent years.

C.

Scientists may soon find fact that there's life on other planets.

D.

America is far ahead of other countries in space research.

Some primary schoolchildren have been raised in homes with more green space around. They are likely to come with larger volumes of white and grey matter in certain areas of the brain. These differences are associated(关联) with beneficial effects on cognitive function (认知功能). This is the main conclusion of a study led by the Barcelona Institute for Global Health.

The study was performed among 253 schoolchildren in Spain.Lifelong exposure(接触) to green space in the living places was recorded﹣using the information on the children's addresses from birth up through to the time of the study. Brain structure was studied using 3D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Working memory and inattentiveness(注意力不集中)were graded with computers.

"This is the first study that shows the association between long﹣term exposure to green space and brain structure." Says Dr. Payam Dadvand, the leading researcher of the study. "Our findings suggest that exposure to green space early in life could result in beneficial structural changes in the brain."

The findings show that long﹣term exposure to greenness is positively associated with white and grey matter volumes in several parts of the brain. Some of them are related to higher scores on cognitive tests. Moreover, larger volumes of white and grey matter in those parts might lead to better working memory and less inattentiveness.

Exposure to nature has been thought to be necessary for brain development in children. Another study of 2,593 children shows that children in school with more green space have a greater increase in working memory and a greater decrease in inattentiveness.

Humans are believed to be tied to nature. Playing in greener areas offers children opportunities to search and learn. Accordingly, green space is thought to promptimportant exercises in discovery, creativity and risk taking. These exercises in turn positively influence brain development.

Dr. Dadvand's study suggests how such structural changes could bring about the beneficial effects of green spaces on cognitive development. It also adds to the proof that suggests the lasting effects of early life exposure to greenness on our health and the benefits of increasing greenness in cities.

Further studies are needed to prove the findings in other populations, settings and climates. And researchers need to examine differences according to the nature and quality of green space.

(1)The second paragraph is mainly about

A. how the study was performed

B. what was recorded in the study

C. how long the study lasted

D. who took part in the study

(2)The word "prompt" in paragraph 6 probably means " ".

A. control

B. encourage

C. balance

D. change

(3)What can we learn from the passage?

A. Working memory influences white and grey matter in the brain.

B. Dr. Dadvand stressed the importance of changing the environment.

C. Studies proved the influence of greenness on populations outs of Spain.

D. Living in greener neighborhoods benefits children in brain development.

The first emperor of China,Qin Shihuang, completed a huge number of projects during his rule.Between 221 and 210 B.C.,he started the building of the Great Wall. The emperor also ordered the building of a huge army of life﹣sized terracotta soldiers(士兵).These,he hoped, would protect his tomb after his death.

    Lost in Time

The soldiers in Xi'an's terracotta museum are today light brown, but they weren't always. They began as an army of red, blue, yellow, green, white, and purple.Sadly, most of the colors did not last to the present day. After being exposed(暴露)to air during digging, the coating under the paint began to fall off.The paint disappeared in less time than it takes to boil an egg, taking away with it important pieces of history.

They then cover it in plastic.

    Back to Life

Archeologists are also finding colors in the dirt around the soldiers. It's important not to do anything with the dirt,so the colors won't be lost. "We are treating the dirt as an art piece, "says Rong Bo,the museum's leading archeologist. The next challenge, says Rong Bo,is to find a way to use the colors onto the army﹣again.Once that happens, artists can bring Emperor Qin's army back to its full, bright colors.

• Sleeping in space

After a long day at work, nothing is better than a good night's sleep!Just like on the earth,in space astronauts go to bed at a certain time, then get up and prepare for work again. When going to sleep, they have to attachthemselves,so they don't float (漂浮) around or hit their bodies against something. They usually use sleeping bags located in small crew cabins (乘员舱).Each crew cabin is just big enough for one person.Generally, astronauts have an eight﹣hour sleep each day when they finish their task.

• Doing sports in space

Exercise is an important part of every astronaut's daily life to prevent muscle loss (肌肉萎缩).Usually, astronauts exercise two hours every day.Lifting 200 pounds on the earth may be a lot of work. But lifting that same object in space would be much easier. That means the things for exercise need to be specially designed,so astronauts can receive the exercise needed.

(2) The bigger your smile is, the more discounts(折扣) you will get. Payment is done automatically(自动地) through your Alipay(支付宝)account. When you first enter the supermarket, the supermarket's AI recognizes your face and your account.

There is also AI that can read lips. (3) It recognizes your mouth,s movements and turns them into voices or text messages. This could be very useful when you are trying to talk to someone on your phone in a noisy place. Police could also use the technology to help them find criminal suspects by lip﹣reading recordings from video cameras.

Are you short﹣sighted? If you are, your parents might have tried to do something to fix it, such as having you get an eye massage(按摩), take medicine or even get surgery(手术). People who offer these services or products often say that they can reduce or even cure short sight.

However, you will no longer see advertisements like this before long. The government has issued a notice to ban(禁止) businesses from using words like "recovery" or "short sight cure" in

their advertisements.

The notice says that short sight cannot be completely cured with current medical technology. Therefore, these advertisements could mislead children and their parents.

Young people can prevent and control short sight by spending more time outside and less time in front of books or computers. People who have sight problems should first go to a hospital and let a doctor decide what to do.

Short sight rates are around 30 percent for primary school students, 60 percent for junior high school students and 80 percent for senior high school students.
