Do you often listen to music at loud volumes? You should know that this habit is bad for your hearing. Over 1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss(听力丧失), because of listening to loud noise for long periods of time. Listening to music or watching a TV show at loud volumes can harm your hearing.

The United Nations has standards for safe listening. It is not safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 85 dB (分贝) for eight hours or 100 dB for 15 minutes. The sound of a busy road is about 85 dB and the sound of a rock concert can be about 100 dB.

Loud noise is harmful to the inner ear. Most of us are born with about 16,000 hair cells(听毛细胞) in our inner ears. These cells notice sounds. However, listening to loud noise for a long time can make these cells work too hard and cause some of them to die. This is what causes hearing loss Once this happens, it's hard to get your hearing back.

Some people might think that their music isn't all that loud. But this can depend on where you are. For example, if you are in a noisy place like the subway, you might turn up your music too loud without realizing it. Later, when you listen to it at the same volume in a quiet place, you might feel uncomfortable.

The "safe level" for most sound is below 80 dB for up to 40 hours a week. a level of 80 dB is about equal to(相当于) the noise of a subway.

Here is some advice on safe listening. Over﹣the﹣ ear headphones(头戴式耳机) are better than in﹣ear ones. They do a better job of stopping outside noise, so you can listen at a lower volume.Don't listen to loud music on your headphones for a long time. Follow the 60: 60 rule: listen to music at 60 percent of your headphones' maximum volume for no more than 60 minutes a day.

根据短文内容,判断下列句子正误.正确的用"A表示,不正确的用"B"表示.

(1)It is safe to listen to sounds that are louder than 100 dB for 15 minutes.

(2)Listening to loud noise for a long time can cause some hair cells in the inner ear to die.

(3)From the fourth paragraph, we know people don't always realize how loud their music is.

(4)In﹣ear headphones are better than over﹣the﹣ear ones because they can stop more outside noise.

(5)This article mainly tells us why ears are an important part of our bodies.

                               Athletics vs. Gardening

The students of Southside School were asked to give their opinions about whether the school should run an athletic program or start a vegetable garden.

An athletic program is hatch better than gardening. How are we ever going to win anything at the Inter﹣School Athletics without proper training? At the moment, we only do athletics for one tam and the teachers train us. We need experts(专家)to teach us things like throwing and high jump.

I know lots of kids say they're tot interested in competitions, but that's because they've never won anything. If they got better training and started winning things, they'd soon change their minds.

People always say kids don't get enough exercise. Just because you do gardening outdoors doesn't make it exercise, so I don't sec how it matters.

Athletics is much better for fitness and lots of kids can have a go at the same tine. I don't think there would be enough jobs for everyone in a garden.

In fact, I think a garden is a really bad idea. I don't know why we're even considering it.

Liz, Grade 8

I think a vegetable garden is a great idea. We already do hours of sport, including athletics. And not everyone likes sport.

Gardening is a great way to get exercise without worrying about whether you're any good at it, or whether you're going to win. And you really do gel exercise when you garden. There's digging, weeding and watering Even picking things can be hard work ﹣ pumpkins aren't light you know!

There are lots of kids around here who don't have gardens so they can't grow things even they want to. If you really want to do more sport, you can join a club.

And think about it: What helps you to be good at sport? You need to eat lots of fruit and vegetables. If we learn to cook all the things we grow, the garden will keep us all fit and healthy and then we'll be better at sport.

Sam, Grade 8

(1)Which of these points do Liz and Sam both make?

A. Kids should take exercise.

B. Kids should eat vegetables.

C. Kids should try to win more.

D. Kids should be outside more.

(2)What is one reason Liz gives for saying "a garden is a really bad idea"?

A. Some students don't like getting dirty.

B. Some students don't enjoy being outside.

C. Some students already know how to garden.

D. Some students may have no chance to garden.

(3)Why does Sam say, "And think about it.: what helps you to be good at sport?"

A. To change the subject.

B. To introduce his next reason.

C. To support Liz's idea.

D. To find an answer to the question.

Most viruses can be found and killed by our immune system as soon as they enter our bodies. However, some viruses, for example, the coronavirus, are sneaky. They are difficult to recognize and find. These viruses can cause deadly diseases, like COVID﹣19.Human﹣to﹣human transmission can easily occur, and pandemic will therefore break out.Vaccination is by now a simple, safe and effective way to protect us from the diseases.

Vaccines are something that "looks" exactly the same as the viruses, mainly made from the viruses that are weakened or killed. They will not make us really ill. They only stimulate and activate our immune system to work, telling it something harmful is coming in.The immune system will know what the "viruses" look like, and send B cells(lymphocytes)or antibodies to find and kill them.Meanwhile,B cells will remember them for the next kill.A vaccine may also give us passive immunity by providing B cells taken from an animal or a human to play the same role.

Scientists have developed more than 180 vaccines to fight against COVID49.The technical approaches of these vaccines can be a little different, but their aims are the same.

Take the inactivated vaccine as an example. In an inactivated vaccine, the coronaviruses are already killed or made into the ones unable to produce more new viruses. When the immune system "sees" them,it will try to kill them. The question is:without enough these viruses• how can B cells remember them? That's why we need to take the vaccine more than one time.Though this vaccine is safe,it might not be as effective as it is expected to be.

The live﹣attenuated vaccine is different. In this vaccine, the viruses are weakened, but they are alive. They can produce enough new viruses to train the immune system to kill and remember them,so people only need to take the vaccine once. The live﹣attenuated vaccine is considered the most effective, but there is a worry:what might happen once these viruses wake up?

Therefore, although vaccination is by now one of the best ways to protect us from COVID﹣19,it can be better.

(1)The coronavirus can .

A.

not be killed

B.

not be found

C.

cause deaths

A.

Vaccination can provide us with B cells.

B.

Vaccines are made from different viruses.

C.

Vaccination can prepare us against viruses.

D.

Vaccines won't make us ill as the viruses do.

(3)Compared to the inactivated vaccine,the live﹣attenuated vaccine .

A.

needs taking more than once

B.

is equally safe

C.

contains viruses that are killed

D.

is more effective

(4)What can we learn from the passage?

A.

Vaccination is good enough to treat COVID﹣19.

B.

The immune system can be more effective with vaccines.

C.

The viruses in inactivated vaccines can make new viruses.

D.

180 vaccines have been developed to fight against diseases.

When most people decide to buy food, they go to a grocery store. Grocery stores sell many different kinds of food in just one store. Some grocery stores also sell household goods such as kitchen paper, cleaning things, and diapers (尿布). A grocery store is a convenient place to shop for the kitchen and others.

Although it is comfortable and relaxing to shop at a grocery store, some people decide to buy their food from other places like farmers' markets. At a farmers' market, local farmers sell the foods they grow to customers. The foods they sell often include fruits, vegetables, and meats. Most of these foods are freshly harvested(收获)with no man-made additions.

There are several ways in which farmers' markets are less convenient than grocery stores. For example, packed foods usually are not sold at farmers' markets. Besides, many farmers do not accept credit(信用)cards or checks (支票)as payment for their goods. What is more, most farmers' markets are only open for business once or twice each week. This makes some people not want to shop at farmers' markets, but others are willing because of the fresh and local food there.

Deciding whether to shop for food at grocery stores or at farmers' markets is a personal choice. This choice reflects a person's values about life and about food. Those who value convenience and(多样)will probably choose to shop at a grocery store. People who value freshness and enjoy supporting local farmers will probably prefer the farmers' markets. Luckily, most communities provide choices for both kinds of shoppers.

(1)According to the passage, which of the following may not be sold at a farmers' market?

A.

Apples.

B.

Potatoes.

C.

Beef.

Experts believe that there are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants, as we know them, have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. That is, there were no places that provided the restaurant experience. There was nowhere in which a waiter brought you food and drink that you picked from a menu. In fact, there were no menus anywhere.

There were eating places travellers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. And there were taverns where one could get drinks. The rich could also eat special meals prepared by private cooks. But none of them could be called a "restaurant".

A man called Boulanger changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups(汤). On his sign he used the word "restaurant" to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help "restore"(恢复)your health﹣ in French the word "restore" is "restaurer"﹣﹣﹣ so he called the soups "restaurants". Soon, people started buying Boulanger's soups even when they were not ill. And over time, people began to use the word "restaurant" to refer to a place selling soup rather than the soup itself. More "restaurants" opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often.

Later, restaurants in Paris began to serve other food besides soup. In the 1790s, menus started to appear. By the mid﹣1800s, there were many types of restaurants throughout the world. The United States offered coffee shops. Tea houses became popular throughout China. Paris created beautiful restaurants for the rich. The British began to copy the French, and the restaurant idea spread throughout the British Empire.
