For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.

To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin's parents would let him decide.

Lin's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.

The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.

Then he saw it. "Cooking" sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.

Based on Lin's hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.

Recently, China announced it had achieved success in drilling fire ice or methane hydrate(天然气水合物即,可燃冰), from the seabed in the shenhu area of the South China Sea. It produces high amount of energy when it is burned, leaving nothing but dioxide and water.

Many countries, including the United States and Japan, have long been doing research on methane hydrate, but taking it from bottom of the sea has been a common problem they are facing.According to reports.China succeeded in drilling methane hydrate for a number of days continuously and got an average of over 16,000 m 3 daily. It is believed to be a big breakthrough.

Scientists say there is about 21, 000 trillion( 万亿 )3 of methane hydrate in the world. If we can use it, it can meet the world's energy need for 1, 000 years. However, it is too early to say a new energy source (来源 ) has been found because we are still facing two main challenges﹣environmental risk and economic(经济的)cost. When methane hydrate is taken from the seabed, it may go into the air easily. That's very bad for the environment because methane is one of the worst greenhouse gases, Besides, drilling methane hydrate is very expensive as well.

However, China's technology breakthrough is very important because it shows the way researchers across the world should take. It also raises hopes that one day we can drill methane hydrate as a source of energy.

A. How to take it out from the bottom of the sea

B. How to turn it into useful energy at the lowest cost.

C. How to make it cheap on the future energy market.

D.How to change it into a traditional form of energy.

(3)Why is it too early to say a new energy source has been found?

A. Because it's too difficult to find the place where the fire ice lies and how to drill it.

B. Because it's not easy for fire ice to go into the air and be good for the environment.

C. Because it s quite impossible for fire ice to take the place of other sources of energy

D.Because it's expensive to drill fire ice and it may do great harm to the environment

(4)Where can we probably read the article?

People can't see you when you're speaking on the phone, but they can hear you. So,the way you

speak is especially important. In fact, researchers have calculated that 80% of communication over the

phone is through your tone of voice; and only 20% is from the words you use. Here are our top tips on

how to speak over the phone.

1Facial Expressions

Your facial expression can influence your voice. For example,if you smile, your voice will sound warm and friendly, just the opposite,if you have an angry look on your face,it can make you sound unpleasant.

2Volume

If you speak too loudly, you could sound angry. And if you speak too softly,it'll be difficult to hear you. So,speak loudly enough to be heard clearly, but not so loud that you're shouting.

3Pace

The pace of your voice is how quickly you speak. And this can show how you feel. For example,an angry person might speak faster than normal.Or a downhearted person might speak very slowly.Try speaking a little more slowly than normal. This will make you sound confident, and it'll make it easier for the other person to understand you.

4Gestures

Gesturing can influence the tone of your voice. When you gesture, you bring more air into the lungs, which can make your voice sound warmer.Gestures are also useful to help you stress the right words or even find the words you need. The best thing about gesturing during a phone call is that no one can see what you're doing,so you can gesture as wildly as you like!

5Movement

If you're feeling nervous, stand up and move around. It will reduce the nervousness in your body and help your voice to sound more confident.

6Pauses (停顿)

Using pauses every now and then can help you to slow down. This will make you sound more confident and in control. Also,if you pause after giving some new information,it'll give the other person time to understand it.At the same time, listen to how the other person uses pauses. They could tell you something about the speaker's feeling. For example, when a speaker is really angry,he might use pauses and says,"I…am…so…angry…"
