Future and Today
It is well known that everyone has his own dream as well as his own future. But do you know what future really is? I have to say that future is now. That is to say we must treasure every minute now. If we want to have a bright future, we should know how important time is and use it well.
There is an old English saying:“Gain time, gain life”Then what’s time? Time is something that we can’t see or touch, but we can feel it passing by. Time is always with us. When we are at table, time passes; when we play, time goes by unnoticeably. We always say “Time is money”, but time is even more precious(珍贵的) than money, because when money is spent, we can earn it back. But if time is gone away, it will never return. So, some of us even say time is priceless.
We should always remember: future is now. For us students, we should try our best to work hard in order to create a great future of our own. We should make the best use of every hour and be the master of today. We should do everything before us as well as possible. And never put off what can be done today till tomorrow.
As we all know,“Time and tide wait for no man.”If you waste today, you will regret tomorrow. So from now on, work hard. Tomorrow will be better, and your future will be brighter. Remember:“No pains, no gains.”Today’s hard work is the cause of tomorrow’s harvest.

There are hundreds of funny and strange expressions in the English language. A lot of them include country names or nationalities. Take these examples:
The Dutch(丹麦人)are the target of most English expressions about nationalities. Why are there so many jokes about the Dutch in English? And what do these expressions mean? In the 17th and early 18th centuries, there were three wars between the British and the Dutch, and Dutch became a bad word. So double Dutch means something that has no meaning or is impossible to understand. A Dutch uncle is someone who gives much stronger advice than they need to. There are later expressions, which are funnier and kinder, like to go Dutch, which is nowadays a popular expression. It means to pay for your part of a bill. This often happens when a group of friends have a meal together, and each person pays for the food they ate. I’m a Dutchman is another commonly used expression. This means not being able to believe something.
An expression with a similar meaning to double Dutch is it’s all Greek to me, which means I don’t understand. The expression was made famous in Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar although the expression is actually hundreds of years older.
If you take French leave, you are not present or leave somewhere without permission. For example, you could take French leave from a classroom or the place where you work. This expression is from the 18th century when French people left parties without saying goodbye to the host or hostess.
There are Chinese whispers, which mean confused(令人困惑的)messages. This describes the fact that a message can often change as it is passed from person to person. This expression comes from the First World War when foreigners were often confused by Chinese language.
Many people find English expressions confusing, but now that you know about some of them, you can easily have fun finding out many more funny English expressions.
Are there many jokes about the Dutch in English?
When did Dutch become a bad word?
What does “French leave” mean?
Which three expressions mentioned above have similar meanings?
What do the funny and strange expressions in the passage have in common?
“Life’s a long, long journey(旅程)” so we are told, and most of us would not set off on a journey, even a short one, without some idea of where we wanted to go. Yet many people travel on life’s journey with no sense of direction at all.
Setting personal goals can give your life a sense of direction. Goal setting is used by top sports players, successful business people and achievers in all fields. Before you set personal goals, think about what you want to achieve with your life.
Try to set goals in some of the following categories.
Education—Will you achieve the educational goals after finishing high-school? Are you still growing and learning? Family—What kind of relationship(关系)do you want with your parents and other family members? Creative—Do you want to achieve any artistic goals? |
Career—What job do you want to take when you grow up? What do you need to make your dream come true? Public Service—Do you want to make the world a better place? Physical—Are you fit enough to do the things you want to do? Pleasure—How do you want to enjoy yourself? |
Write down the goals and think about them carefully. Are they realistic? When will you be able to achieve them?
To help make the process (过程) more manageable, divide your goals into smaller tasks. For example, if you want to reach a main goal in five years, set a three-year goal, a one-year goal, a three-month goal and a one-month goal. Then create a daily To-Do List of things that you should do today. When a goal is achieved, take the time to enjoy your success. This helps you build the self-confidence.
Remember, your goals can change as time goes on. But be sure your goals are things you hope to achieve, not what your parents, family or teachers want.
Is life a long journey according to the passage?
Why do you need to set your life goal?
What should you consider when you set a family goal?
How can we achieve the main goal easily?
What does the writer want to tell us?

Many people would like to watch sport matches. First, you need to know about audience manners.
Most sporting arenas(竞技场) have rules for audience written on the back of the tickets. Read your ticket carefully before you arrive. Try to reach your seat half an hour before the start of the event and don’t leave when a game is in progress. When you leave, remember to take away your soft drink bottle and other rubbish.
During exciting games, try to control yourself. Don’t criticize(批评)the performance of players and coaches. Be careful with your words, since some may cause anger among other people in the audience
Applause(鼓掌)is a special form of body language you can use to communicate with players, but you should do it properly. When players first appear, clap your hands together to welcome them, but don’t go on for too long. After an excellent performance, applaud warmly. If someone fails, your applause will help encourage them.
Applause is not welcome, however, while players need to keep their concentration. Various sports have various rules for the audience.
Enjoy artistic gymnastics silently. But lots of cheering can really help basketball and football players. Snooker and table tennis courtside behavior includes a ban on flash photography. Mobile phones are not allowed in shooting centers.
To be good audience, you should spend time learning the specific(明确的) rules and the culture of each event.
What shouldn’t you do after you watch a game?

Some children are born bosses. They have a need to make decisions, manage their environment and lead rather than follow. Too much rule in the hands of the young isn’t healthy for children or the family. Family expert John Taylor says, “Children have secret feelings of weakness. They are always trying to feel safe. ”It’s the parents’ duty-not the child’s-to provide safety.
When a “boss child’’ doesn’t learn limits(限制)at home, troubles will appear outside the family. The child may have trouble obeying(遵守)teachers, for example, or keeping friends. It can be pretty lonely as the top dog if no one likes your ruling ways.
Bossy kids are often unusually bright. Their parents need to be especially careful to manage them. Bossy kids usually work more on the mother. It’s important for both parents to know their child’s weakness, to agree on key rules and to back each up.
Even as you try to be kind—to a point—don’t give up your parental ruling post. Instead, stand your ground by using body language that tells your child who the boss is.
Good manners are important to family. Show a child by example how to ask for something rather than shout orders. Try asking your child to do things that are not too difficult. Then reward(奖励)him with a hug(拥抱)and words such as “Thank you. I like it when you listen to me.” Over time good manners will become associated(联结)with pleasure.
Is the passage mainly about how to teach children?
Do boss children usually feel lonely or have a lot of friends?
Which of the parents should know their child’s weakness?
Why is it important to teach children good manners?
What should parents be like to teach a boss child well?

We parents like to make sure that our children are eating well and getting all the nutrients(营养)they need. Children need two or three kinds of vegetables every day.
A simple way to get children to eat vegetables is eating them ourselves. Following our habit, they may start eating vegetables. Don’t say things like, “If you eat your vegetables, you can have desserts(餐后甜食).” These methods work for a while but can possibly lead them to disliking vegetables more. Giving your children new varieties(多样性) which will help her or him develop a taste for trying new things.
Sometimes the simple things just don’t work. We have to start becoming a little creative when it comes to make our children eat these vegetables. By doing this in the beginning when they are small, it will hopefully help them learn to love vegetables.
Think of creative ways to make children eat vegetables. For example, cut up vegetables like carrots, tomatoes, and assemble (集合) a creative way on a plate for an afternoon snack. Or try using cheese sauce either by dipping(浸)vegetables or by putting the cheese right on top of the uncooked vegetables.
If you prefer, you can also add a teaspoon of sugar on top of cooked green beans and peas to give them a little sweeter taste. Doing this shouldn’t lead to a sweet tooth as long as you only give them a small amount.
If you have a child that refuses to eat vegetables, some of these suggestions I’ve listed will help to turn that around. In the end, you’re not just getting them to eat vegetables, you are helping them to live a healthier lifestyle.

Venice, a city in the northeast of Italy, is famous throughout the world for its buildings and romantic canals (运河). But in February every year, people come to Venice for another reason. The city carnival fills the place with excitement and fun. This year, the celebration runs from February 4 to 21.
Colorful costumes have always played a very important role in the Venetian carnival. The carnival happens at the start of the Christian fasting (斋戒) period of Lent. It was traditionally a time to go a bit crazy with eating, drinking, dancing and dressing up before the fast began. People used masks to hide their social identity so that the nobility(贵族) would look no different from the commoners.
Today the carnival is largely for the tourists. “Venetians don’t dress up for Carnival after the age of 10.” Giuseppina Giudice, who has lived in the city all her life, told the Guardian. “All we see of Carnival is a river of strangers who flow into town to feel ‘Venetian’. They fill it, buy a cheap mask and leave with nothing but photographs of St Mark’s Square.”
Some locals want to bring back the original (最初的) feel of Carnival. In 2009, two social networking groups started organizing their own carnival. Visitors were invited. But there were no expensive tickets or fancy ball dresses---- just an old-fashioned Italian street party. “Tourists are welcome to our party ---- the more we can show them about the real Venice rather than the postcard Venice, the better,” Matteo Secchi, one of the organizers, told the Guardian.

Microblogs: a two-sided blade(双刃剑)
Micro-blogging has been growing quickly over the past year. As a result, many other forms of social networking are no longer popular, even if they just came into being several years ago. However, micro-blogging is a two-side blade. It helps, but it also hurts.
Micro-blogging is famous for spreading messages almost immediately. It also helps the public manage some agencies and organizations. For example, in March 2011, some micro-bloggers persuaded the Nanjing government to stop cutting 600 old trees in the downtown area; after a serious earthquake and tsunami(海啸) hit Japan, micro-bloggers called for giving a helping hand to the Japanese victims. In July, micro-bloggers made clear the “Guo Meimei” scandal(丑闻), and brought the Red Cross Society of China under investigation.
Like everything in life, micro-blogging also has an opposite side.
Guo Meimei, who was involved in the scandal of the Red Cross Society, suffered from all kinds of online attacks, and said she was being followed up on and even threatened. Another problem is the spreading rumors(谣言), such as the rumor that Shanxi was going to be struck by a big earthquake and “Jin Yong’s death”—Jin Yong is a Chinese novelist famous for his wuxia novels.
In the online world, large amounts of information is easily spread to a large network, but sometimes there is no official source. So it’s highly important for everyone to have the ability to tell truth from rumor. It is also suggested that Internet companies should stop the accounts of users who spread rumors.
Why are many forms of social networking no longer popular?
What is micro blogging famous for?
Who persuaded the Nanjing government to save 600 old trees?
What are bad points of micro-blogging?
How can people deal with the online world?
