The idea for the boat race between the universities came from two friends﹣Charles Merivale,a student at Cambridge, and his friend Charles Wordsworth who was at Oxford. They decided to set up a boat race between the two universities. On March 12,1829,Cambridge sent a challenge to Oxford first.

The race is four and a quarter miles in just 20 minutes and the competitors often face difficulties. It usually takes six months for the two teams to prepare for the big days.In the past, the Oxford was mostly the winners. But things have changed from 1993 on.The Cambridge has won more.

What do you use to unlock your cellphone? A password? A fingerprint? Or simply a glance(一瞥)?

On September 12, 2017, Apple introduced its iPhone X, which has an eye﹣catching feature (特色)﹣Face ID.

With Face ID, Apple says, you can unlock your new iPhone by just looking atit. It is powered by a so﹣called TrueDepth camera system built into the front of the iPhone X.

When the camera system sees a person's face, it uses 30,000 unseen dots (点) to "'map"(勾画)the shape and outline of the face. A mathematical model of the face will then be created and stored (储存) in the phone.

The next time the person looks at the iPhone X, the same dots are mapped onto his or her face and compared to the stored model. If the two match, then the phone unlocks.

This happens in less than a second.

Apple says the system is smart. If you change your hairstyle, put on sunglasses or makeup, or use the phone in the dark, Face ID still works.

Although the technology sounds fancy, there are still concerns (担心). For example, will Face ID work for twins?

According to Apple, the chance of others to unlock your iPhone X using Face ID is one in a million. Face ID can tell the difference between twins, but the error rating (出错率) rises. So one would need to set a password then.

Apple also emphasizes (强调) that Face ID only unlocks when you stare atit. It is what Apple calls"attention aware (察觉)". So the phone won't unlock if you are just glancing at the phone for the time. It won't work either if someone puts the phone at your sleeping face or your photo.

(1)The new function (功能) of the iPhone X is that you can unlock it with

A.

a sign

B.
C.

a password

D.
E.

a fingerprint

F.
G.

Face I

H.

(2)The camera system of Face ID works by

A.

remembering users' faces by taking their pictures

B.

using a map to store face models of its users for later use

C.

matching the users' faces with unseen dots stored in the system

D.

creating a face model of the user and comparing it with the user's face later

(3)Face ID doesn't work when you

A.

wear a mask

B.

put on sunglasses

C.

change your hairstyle

D.

use the iPhone X in the dark

(4)You would need to set a password to prevent to unlock your iPhone X with Face ID.

A.

your parents

B.

your classmates

C.

your twin brother

D.

your best friend

(5)The main idea of the passage is that

A.

the iPhone X can't recognize a person's face

B.

Face ID is a program to unlock the iPhone X

C.

people worry about the safety of using Face ID

D.

we can unlock the iPhone X in three different ways

Today is December 15,2030.Influenced by the launch of the first manned mission to Mars next month, you will most likely get a gift card for a space trip.

The interest in trips, 100km above the surface of the Earth, has grown steadily since such a trip began. However, the market has grown much larger this year since the official announcement of the Mars mission. More low﹣cost spacelines have entered the market and you can now find flights for such a trip for as low as ﹩ 3,495. It's very reasonable.

Space tourism(旅游业;观光业)is one of the markets that have developed fast during the last decade, with the opening of the Starbright Hotel on the moon as well as the low orbital hotels that started accepting guests. However, accommodation in space is still expensive for the averagehousehold,so the suborbital(亚轨道的)flights with thirty﹣minute weightlessness during the three﹣hour flight will for some time be the most popular trip.

However, the spacelines might in the future face fierce competition between space elevators(太空升降舱), like the one that is projected to start construction within two years.Once it is fully functional,it will start to ship cargo to space. But it will accept passengers as soon as possible to get back the large investment.Even if the elevator becomes successful,it will take several years before there are more elevators in the world to get in the competition for space traffic with the spacelines.

Those who are looking for a little bit of adventure and have extra money to spend may want to consider a suborbital flight in space. While a suborbital flight may not be the space mission that you have always dreamed of, it will give you the rare opportunity to see what our planet looks like in a high﹣altitude flight outside our atmosphere. So before you enjoy a trip by elevator to space, enjoy a suborbital flight first.

(1)From Paragraph 1, what will happen in January, 2031?

A.

A gift card will be taken to Mars.

B.

Mars will be explored for the first time.

C.

Man will go to Mars for the first time.

D.

An affordable space trip will come true.

(2)The underlined "average" can most probably be replaced by in this passage.

A.

common

B.

high﹣income

C.

low﹣cost

D.

low﹣income

(3)What is the space elevator's purpose of accepting passengers as soon as possible?

A.

To ship cargo to space.

B.

To get in the competition between spacelines.

C.

To start the construction of more space elevators.

D.

To get back the large investment.

(4)Which of the following is NOT true?

A.

Space tourism has developed fast during the last ten years.

B.

A suborbital fight is the space mission that many people have dreamed of.

C.

The suborbital flights will be the most popular trip for some time.

D.

Even though the elevator becomes successful, we still wait for a few years to see more elevators come out.

(5)We can know from the passage that

A.

the low orbital hotels have opened since a space trip began

B.

within two years, space elevators will begin to ship cargo and people to space

C.

during the suborbital flights, you will experience 30 minutes weightlessness

D.

if you want to meet your curiosity, you may try a suborbital flight
