Is there a connection between music and language?According to recent studies, the answer is yes:Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain.

A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person's hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear the talking person more clearly.

Musicians hear better, says study leader Nina Kraus, because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds. For example, when the violinists play in an orchestra (管弦乐队),they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore (忽视) the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.

Gottfried Schlaug,a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke (中风) patients.Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, addresses, or other information normally. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find singing words helped his patients finally speak. Why does this work?Schlaug isn't sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. In some way, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again.

So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. Playing an instrument or singing, says Nina Kraus, can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older.

How would you feel if someone decided to take away your park? Well that's what's happening in my community. There's a park that some people want to turn into a golf course(高尔夫球场).Let me tell you why I think it's a bad idea.

First, a park is meant to be for the whole community. Not everyone likes golf, so not everyone will get to use the park. This isn't fair. A community park should have open spaces for everyone to use.

Second, to make way for the golf course, lots of playground equipment(设施)will have to be moved or knocked down, which is a waste of time and money. It's also a waste of perfectly good equipment,The swings, for example, will probably just end up as litter.

Third, what about giving young people something to do?Not all kids are crazy about golf.At the moment, the park has a skating place and a playground. These attract lots of kids from the community. If you turn the park into a golf course, these kids won't have anywhere to go and they won't have anything to do.This means that they will stay at home and turn on a video game rather than get some exercise. It also means that they might be out on the street causing trouble.Wouldn't it be better to give them something to do at the park?

Finally, golf is expensive.Building a golf course and maintaining(维护) it costs a lot of money.Who is going to pay to maintain the golf course? What about those people who can't afford to join a golf club? That means that the golf course will only be available to people with lots of money.

Turning our park into a golf course is a bad idea.I suggest we have a community meeting before plans go any further.

(1)Some people want to change the park into

A. a golf club

B. a golf course

C. a parking place

D. a skating place

(2)According to Paragraph 4, having nowhere to go will make some children

A. go to get some exercise

B. fall in love with golf

C. play video games at home

D. go to the street and make friends

(3)Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

(P= Paragraph)

(4)What is the writer's purpose in writing this passage?

A. To help carry out further plans.

B. To make the park more beautiful.

C. To encourage children to go skating.

D. To stop the golf course from being built.

Tourism (旅游业)is one of the world's largest industries. Many countries depend heavily on tourism as an important part of their economy(经济), while other countries﹣such as some of the smaller Caribbean island nations﹣are almost completely dependent on tourism.

Despite its economic advantages, tourism has disadvantages, too. While countries spend millions attracting tourists, they are also under the pressure that tourism brings.

One of the biggest problems is environmental. The building of roads and hotels can quickly destroy those very beautiful places. Development on wetlands, for example, influences wildlife; forests disappear as they are cleared to make way for buildings and to provide fuel (燃料). In addition, the tourist industry also puts a huge pressure on water people need. In dry Mediterranean areas, tourists use almost twice as much water as local people when swimming in the pool.

Tourism is also responsible for producing plenty of waste. Cruise ships in the Caribbean produce a lot of rubbish﹣more than 70,000 tons each year. It even has an influence on places far away like the Himalays, the word's highest mountain, which has more than 100 tons of rubbish sitting on it.

In spite of those problems, tourism can be good for communities and the environment. The park﹣entrance fees(费用)are paid for the protection of places of interest or the animals. What's more, tourism brings people closer to nature, and can give them a better understanding of the environment and the result of destroying it.This leads to pressure on local governments to protect these beautiful areas, and can result in the protection of endangered plants and animals. Also, it can provide people with more opportunities to find jobs in the tourist industry.

Although tourism has many advantages, it clearly has a bad influence as well. The challenge for local and national governments is to manage tourism so that communities can benefit economically, and yet at the same time, make sure that the tourist areas are kept for all to enjoy.

(1)Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4 mainly talk about the of tourism.

A.disadvantages

B.development

C.importance

D.survey

(2)The writer shows the waste problem is serious by

A.telling stories

B.listing facts

C.asking questions

D.making comparisons

(3)According to Paragraph 5,which of the following are the advantages of tourism?

①The money from tourism is used to protect the environment.

②Tourism can help people better understand the local culture.

③People can get more chances to find jobs related to tourism.

④Humans and nature are becoming closer with the help of tourism.

A.①②③

B.①②④

C.①③④

D.②③④

(4)The writer advises the government to at the end of the passage.

A.attract more tourists

B.care about the economy

Bananas are the perfect snack. Not only are they sweet and delicious, but they are easy to carry around, so you can take them anywhere. Best of all, bananas provide different things that the human body needs!

Bananas grow best in warm places that get lots of rain. They grow on plants that look like trees. The banana plant, however, is considered a herb rather than a tree because it doesn't have a strong , woody stem(干,茎). The plants can grow as high as 30feet. Elephants are the largest land animals alive today. African elephants live in family groups called herds(群). All of the elephants in the herd take care of each other. The leader of the herd is an old mother elephant. She is the matriarch (族长). A herd may have as few as eight or as many as 100 elephants. The other elephants follow the matriarch because she knows how to keep them safe from coming danger.

Elephants learn by watching and copying other elephants, and also learn from life. Baby elephants stay with their mothers until they are fully grown at about ten years old. Elephants live to be 50 or 60 years old. Elephants are smart animals with long memories. In the dry season, a matriarch can remember where water was found in the past. The herd will follow her there. She can also remember the safest place for baby elephants to cross a fast﹣moving river.

Elephants talk to each other with rumbling sounds. Some rumbling sounds are so low and deep that people are unable to hear them. Elephants hear sounds not only with their ears, but also with their feet, and even trunks (long noses of the elephants). They also greet each other by touching with their trunks and feet. If danger appears, mothers beat their ears to call their babies to them.

Other animals don't usually attack(攻击) elephants. However, a lion might try to attack a sick elephant or a baby. If this happens, the adult elephants circle around the baby elephants. The adults make louder sounds and hit the ground with their trunks. The matriarch puts herself between the lion and the herd. She beats her ears out to make herself look even larger.
