Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to  26  in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine’s Day is even more out of   29  .
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I sat down beside her. “Mom, I have a question to ask you. Is there  30  between you and Dad?” I asked her in a very low voice. She didn’t answer immediately. She  31 her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had  32  her. I was  33  and I didn’t know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
“Susan,” she said thoughtfully, “Look at this thread.Sometimes it  34  , but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt   35  . If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen     36  , but it’s really there. Love is  37 .”
I listened carefully but I  38  her until the next spring. At that time, my father suddenly  39  seriously. My mother had to stay with him in the hospital for a month. When they returned from the hospital, they both looked  40 . It seemed both of them had had a serious illness. After they were back, every day in the morning and dusk, my mother helped my father   41  on the country road.
“Dad, how are you feeling now?” I asked him one day.
“Susan, don’t  42  me.” he said gently. “To tell you the truth, I just like walking with your mom.” 43  his eyes, I know he loves my mother deeply.
Once I thought love meant flowers, gifts and  44 . But from this experience, I understand that love is just  45  in the quilt of our life. Love is inside, making life strong and warm.

One cold night, I was growing sick of my life in San Francisco. There I was walking home around one o’clock in the morning after a  1 practice at the theatre. With the opening night only a week away, I was still learning my lines by heart. I was having   2 handling my part-time job at the bank in the daytime and my acting at night at the same time. As I walked, I thought seriously about  3 both acting and San Francisco. I had  4 too much of city life.
As I walked down the  5 streets under the tall buildings, I felt very small and cold, so I began  6 both to keep warm and to keep away from any possible robbers. Very few people were still out except a few homeless people under blankets.
About a block from my  7 , I heard a sound behind me. I   8  quickly, half expecting to see someone with a knife or a gun. The street was empty. All I saw was a shining streetlight. Still, the noise had made me  9 ,so I started to run faster. Not until I reached my apartment building and unlocked the door did I   10 what the noise had been. It had been my wallet  11 to the sidewalk.
Suddenly I wasn’t cold or tired anymore. I ran out of the door and back to where I’d heard the noise. Although I searched the sidewalk   12 for 15 minutes, my wallet was nowhere to be found.
Just as I was about to quit the  13 , I heard the garbage truck stop to the sidewalk next to me. When a voice came from the inside, “Alisa Camacho?” I thought I was dreaming. How could this man know my name? The door opened and out jumped a small blonde man with an  14 look in his eyes. “Is this what you’re looking for?” He asked, holding up a wallet.
It was already 3 a.m. by the time I got into bed. I couldn’t get much sleep, but I had got my wallet back. I also had got back some  15 of city life. I realized the city couldn’t be a bad place as long as people were willing to help each other.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Love is blind”? If so, you are already   21  with a type of mistake in our attempts to understand others: halo effects. This type of mistake    22  to the fact that once we form an overall impression of somebody, it could have strong effects on our   23    of his personality.   24 , halo effects are both common and powerful. For example, most organizations contain one or more “superstars”--- people who have earned the reputation for being unusually   25   and capable. Once they have gained such a “halo”, everything they do receives good   26  . Ideas that would be regarded as just so-so if suggested by someone else are seen as    27  when proposed by these persons. And actions that might be considered risky if taken by others are seen as brave when carried out by these “chosen” men and women.
As you can see, halo effects carry high costs. They may lead some persons to have an   28     high opinion of their own worth, while making things  29  for others who are equally deserving. Further, by giving too much influence to persons who are not ready to receive it, and by preventing hidden talent from being   30  , they can harm organizations as well as individuals. Clearly, then, it is important to recognize the existence and impact of halo effects; only then can their harmful effects be avoided.
