How to Read a Book
Books can be your best friends.    They can introduce you the things you may never see… But do you know how to read them in order to get the fullest enjoyment possible? The following tips should help.
Find a book. Look in the library or in one of the large bookstores. You could also ask friends if you could have a book at their book shelves. Search the selves until you find a book that looks good.Read the first page to see how it reads, and the cover text on the back of the book, if it has any.
Buy or borrow it and take it home. Do not start to read it until you have the time.    And set aside time to do nothing else but read, as it can be, at times, suspenseful(悬疑的), exciting and relaxing.
Get comfortable on the couch. Have a lamp( 灯 ) behind you, lighting the area where you are reading. Make sure the television is off and that anything else that could distract you has been attended to.   .
Start the book by turning the pages and really enjoy it. Do not think about anything else but what you are reading. Put yourself into the action or location in the story. Once you concentrate completely, it will be difficult to put the book down. And remember that reading is not running your eyes over a book.    However, if you need to read the book quickly, then you do not need to pay attention to every word.

A.If you are busy doing other things, you should wait until you have finished them.
B.Get warm if you are going to be sitting still for a few hours.
C.If you are already concentrating, then buy it or borrow it.
D.Try to imagine the story in your head.

E.They can take you to places that you may never go.
F.You should read it actively and enjoy it completely.
G.Otherwise, you will miss it.

This useful and popular book shows that if you are gone broke and lose love, please hold yourself back. If you look fat, just face it calmly. If you are in survival thinking, the most important is that you get rid of all the difficulties in front of us, life will be safe, perfect. If your daughters are to take their rightful place in society, they must become fearless.
In this book, the author calls the nation’s leading experts on violent behavior, and shows you how to spot even tiny signs of danger before it’s too late. Most violent acts are unpredictable. It points out that true fear is often a signal that can save your life. Believe the threat of violence surrounds us every day. But we can protect ourselves by straight judgment.
This book based on his years of clinical experience. It says about twenty-five million Americans take medicine to avoid depression. Despite the advances in the treatment of depression in recent years, many patients, even with the best medical care, feel that they are not living rich and fulfilling lives. This book will direct you how to survive well.
This interesting book tells us that annoyance is as much a political matter as a biological one. And anger is a definite message: Pay attention to me. I don’t like what you are doing. Restore my pride. You’re in my way. Give me justice. This book suggests that when you’re angry, just let it right out.
This valuable book states that nervousness has become a constant factor in today’s society like a sign of the times, but it is sometimes difficult to recognize the effects of anxiety on our mental health. The only way to feel better about ourselves is to go out and do it.

Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
PARIS
Paris, the capital and the largest city of the country, is in north central France. The Paris metropolitan area contains nearly 20% of the nation’s population and is the economic, cultural, and political center of France. The French government has historically favored the city as the site for all decision making, thus powerfully attracting nearly all of the nation’s activities.
Paris has grown steadily since it was chosen as the national capital in the late 10th century. With the introduction of the Industrial Revolution, a great number of people moved to the city from the country during the 19th century. The migration was especially stimulated by the construction of railroads, which provided easy access to the capital. After World War II more and more immigrants arrived.
The city is the centralized control point of most national radio and television broadcasting. It is a place of publication of the most prestigious (有威望的) newspapers and magazines and an international book publishing center. With more than 100 museums, Paris has truly one of the greatest concentrations of art treasures in the world. The Louvre, opened as a museum in 1793, is one of the largest museums in the world.
In the late 1980s about 4.1 million pupils annually attended about 47,000 elementary schools. In addition, about 5.4 million students attended some 11,200 secondary schools. Approximately 1.2 million students were enrolled annually at universities and colleges in France in the late 1980s. French centers of learning have served as academic models throughout the world.
Paris is the leading industrial center of France, with about one quarter of the nation’s manufacturing concentrated in the metropolitan area. Industries of consumer goods have always been drawn to Paris by the enormous market of the big population; and modern, high-technology industries also have become numerous since World War II. Chief manufactures are machinery, automobiles, chemicals and electrical equipment.

A  Famous University Town
When we say that Cambridge is a university town we do not mean that it is a town with a university in it.
The university is not just one part of the town; it is all over the town. The heart of Cambridge has its shops, restaurants, market places and so on, but most of it is university, colleges, libraries, clubs and other places for university staff and students. The town was there first. Cambridge became a center of learning in the thirteenth century. Many students were too poor to afford lodgings(公寓)      This was the beginning of the present day college system.
Today there are nearly thirty colleges.       Many of them live in lodgings at first and move into college for their final year. But every student is a member of his college from the beginning. He must eat a number of meals in the college hall each week.
so nearly all of them use bicycles. Don’t try to drive through Cambridge during the five minutes between lectures, as you will find crowds of people on bicycles hurrying in all directions. If you are in Cambridge at five minutes to the hour any morning of the term, you’ll know that you are in a university town.        .

A.Colleges were opened so that students could live cheaply.
B.Students are not allowed to keep cars in Cambridge
C.Many students were short of money for their education, so college towns were set up then.
D.A university town is one where there is no clear separation between the university buildings and the rest of the city.

E. Stop in some safe place, and wait.
F. The size of Cambridge University is not so big as the town.
G. Very few students can now live in college for the whole of their course; the numbers are too great.

根据短文内容,从下框的A--F 选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余项。

A.  Children don’t mean to annoy their parents.
B.  Children can’t understand their parents.
C.  Generation gap exists between parents and kids.
D.  Communication can help you become independent.
E.  Parents should understand their children.
F.  Children want to prove parents are responsible.

Parents complain that their teenage children don’t listen to them. They don’t like the way their kids are dressed. They can’t appreciate the music their children prefer. They don’t like the stars their children admire.  Of course, teenagers too are puzzled. They wonder why there is always difference between them and their parents. This is what we call generation gap.
Some children have always complained that their parents are out of touch with modern ways; that they do not trust their children to deal with crises; that they talk too much about certain problems and that they have no sense of humor, at least in parent-child relationships. Actually, this happens as a result of misunderstanding because loving the young is the nature of all the parents.
Young people often get their parents annoyed with their choices in clothes and hairstyles, in idols (偶像)and music, but that is not their desire. They feel cut off from the adult world into which they have not yet been accepted. So they create a culture and society of their own. Then, if it turns out that their music or idols or clothes or hairstyles annoy their parents, this gives them additional enjoyment. They may think that they are leaders in style and taste.
Sometimes you are satisfied if your parents don’t approve of what you do. You may think that they do so for your sake. They tend to bring their children under control just because they want to be responsible for their children. On the contrary, you’ll be sad if they let you do everything in your own way. That will make you think they don’t care about you.
If you plan to control your life, you are supposed to communicate with others in a more effective way. You can charm others, especially your parents, into doing things the way you want. You can impress others with your sense of responsibility, so that they will give you the authority to do what you want to do.

根据短文内容,从下框的A~F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑.选项中有一项为多余项.
A. Argue with your boss about everything you want.
B. Make the issues clear.
C. Communicate at the right time
D. Don’t go in when you are angry.
E. Propose your solution
F. Put yourself in the boss’s position
Before you argue with your boss, check with the boss’s secretary to determine his mood. If he ate nails for breakfast, it is not a good idea to ask him for something. Even without the boss’s secretary, there are keys to timing: don’t approach the boss when he’s on deadline; don’t go in right before lunch, when he is apt to be distracted and rushed; don’t go in just before or after he has taken a vacation.
If you are mad, that will only make your boss mad. Calm down first. And don’t let a particular concern open the floodgates for all your accumulated frustration. The boss will feel that you think negatively about the company and it is hopeless trying to change your mind. Then, maybe he will dismiss you.
Terrible disputes can result when neither the employer nor the employee knows what is the problem the other wants to discuss. Sometimes the fight will go away when the issues are made clear. The employee has to get his point across clearly in order to make the boss understands it.
Your boss has enough on his mind without your adding more. If you can’t put forward an immediate solution, at least suggest how to approach the problem. People who frequently present problems without solutions to their bosses may soon find they can’t get past the secretary.
To deal effectively with a boss, it’s important to consider his goals and pressure. If you can put yourself in the position of being a partner to the boss, then he will be naturally more inclined to work with you to achieve your goals.

请阅读下列科技新闻的信息:
A. One of the biggest science stories last year was the research on stem cells announced by South Korean scientist Hwang Woo-suk. But now it appears that the research was false. In June, Mr. Hwang reported that he and his team at Seoul National University had created eleven new stem cell lines.
B. Another major science story last year came from the United States. On December twentieth, a federal judge ruled that teaching “intelligent design” in public schools is a violation of the United States Constitution.
C. There was also news last year about the American space program. The American space shuttle(航天飞机) returned to the skies in July. Discovery and its seven-member crew made the first shuttle flight in two and one-half years. NASA had suspended shuttle flights following the deadly explosion of the shuttle Columbia in 2003.
D. Avian influenza(禽流感) was also a major science story last year. The H5N1 virus appeared in birds in Europe for the first time. Yet the only known human cases of the disease have been in East Asia. There have been about one hundred forty confirmed cases of bird flu since 2003. About half the people have died.
E. The World Health Organization advises patients to take a combination of four drugs to treat tuberculosis(肺结核). These four antibiotics must be taken for about six months to cure the disease. Some people, however, take the drugs only until they feel better. Discontinuing treatment is a mistake.
F. The researchers began the study in January, 2002. They called it SMART---Strategies for Management of Anti-retroviral Therapy. The scientists reached more than ninety percent of the target before they halted(停止) new enrollments last month. The researchers tested all the people for the level of CD-four cells in their blood. The researchers divided the patients into two groups.
阅读以下与科技有关的信息卡,然后匹配信息卡和与之相关的科技新闻:
Card 1: One group stayed on continuous anti-retroviral therapy. They took their medicines every day. The other took them periodically. They took the drugs only when their CD-four count fell below two hundred fifty cells per cubic millimeter of blood.
Card 2 : Judge John Jones said that intelligent design is not science. He said it is a version of Christianity. So to teach it in public schools violates the law that requires the separation of church and state. Supporters of intelligent design criticize the science of evolution.
Card 3: Stem cells have the ability to grow into other cells. Science magazine published the report. The new lines were made from the eggs of eighteen women and skin cells from eleven other people.
Card 4: Many of the victims had touched or been around infected farm birds. But health experts around the world began warning that the bird flu virus could change into a form that is passed from person to person.
Card 5 : That explosion was the result of damage done to Columbia during its launch. A piece of lightweight protective material fell off the shuttle’s external fuel container. The object hit the shuttle at a high rate of speed and made a hole in one of the wings. This permitted extremely hot gases to enter the shuttle and destroy the spacecraft as it returned to the earth.

Any car accident is frightening, but an accident in which your vehicle is thrown into the water, with you trapped inside, is absolutely terrifying.     However, most deaths result from panic, without a plan or understanding what is happening to the car in the water. By adopting a brace(支撑) position, acting decisively and getting out fast, you can save yourself from a sinking vehicle.
Brace yourself for impact (撞击力). As soon as you're aware that you're going off the road and into a body of water, adopt a brace position. The impact could set off the airbag system in your vehicle, so you should place both hands on the steering wheel in the "ten and two" position.
Undo your seatbelt.     Unbuckle the children, starting with the oldest first. Forget the cell phone call. Your car isn't going to wait for you to make the call.
Leave the door alone at this stage and concentrate on the window. A car's electrical system should work for up to three minutes in water, so try the method of opening it electronically first. Many people don't think about the window as an escape option either because of panic or misinformation about doors and sinking.
Break the window. If you aren't able to open the window, or it only opens halfway, you'll need to break it with an object or your foot. It may feel counter-intuitive (有悖常理的) to let water into the car.
Escape when the car has equalized. If it has reached the dramatic stage where the car cabin has been filled with water and it has become balanced, you must move quickly and effectively to ensure your survival.     While there is still air in the car, take slow, deep breaths and focus on what you're doing.
Open the window as soon as you hit the water.
Surviving a sinking car is not as difficult as you think.
It takes 60 to 120 seconds for a car to fill up with water usually.
Such accidents are particularly dangerous to the risk of drowning.
In conclusion, if you know what to do in the water, you will be safe.
This is the first thing to attend to, yet it often gets forgotten in the panic.
But the sooner the window is open, the sooner you can escape directly through it.
