Jealous of the kids at school who are smarter than you and seem to learn more quickly? Don’t worry.     71
72    However, according to a recent study, IQ can rise—not just by one or two points, but by as many as 21 points!
Scientists have found that IQ changes are linked to changes in part of the brain called gray matter, which was seen to grow and become denser (更加密集) in the brains of people whose IQs improved greatly.
73    One is to train your short-term memory. Previous research has proven that short-term memory is the basis for intelligence, so trying to recognize or retell something that you have seen or heard can help raise your overall brain power.     74
A good night’s sleep will also help improve your concentration.     75     It helps you stay focused for longer the next day.
Scientists have also found that exercise helps. Walking 30 minutes a day five times a week and doing exercise will help you become more knowledgeable—as well as healthier and fitter.

A.There are several ways of increasing your brain’s gray matter.
B.Your brain deals more efficiently with things you truly like.
C.With a bit of brain training, the chances are that you can be as smart as they are.
D.So maybe it’s a good idea to get your brain in training right away.

E. Getting enough sleep is like pushing the reset button in your brain.
F. The more you work on it, the better you will become.
G. People used to assume that a person’s IQ was unchangeable.

In the tour book below, four countries are missing. Try to identify them.

The combination of travel and volcanoes has not mixed well in recent times. Many thousands of holiday makers were left stranded in 2010 after the eruption of an Icelandic volcano created a dust cloud which covered much of mainland Europe and severely interrupted air travel. For some, though, volcanoes and travel are a combination made in heaven, with increasing numbers of enthusiasts booking specific excursions to visit volcanoes around the world.
So before you start digging out your passport, changing up your travel money and renewing your travel insurance, take a look at this list of the top 5 volcano travel break destinations and see what takes your fancy.
Italy
Italy is home to three active volcanoes, the largest of which is Mount Etna, situated on the east coast of the Italian island of Sicily. Etna is one of the ‘liveliest’ volcanoes on the planet and is almost constantly active – making it one of the best places in Europe to observe smoking craters and volcanic activity first hand. While in Italy you may also want to consider a trip to Pompeii, the ruins of a city decimated by the eruption of the Mount Vesuvius volcano and an impressive reminder of the true power that volcanoes hold.
_1__
Situated on the boundary of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, it is an island whose very creation is a result of many undersea volcanic eruptions. Pay a visit to the beautiful landscape of its highlands and you can expect to see geysers, awe-inspiring glaciers and lava deserts alongside a selection of active volcanoes. You may also want to visit the site of the volcano that caused more pronunciation problems for newsreaders during the ash cloud crisis of 2010 than possibly any other name ever – Eyjafjallajokull.
_2__
The mountainous Kamchatka region, located in Far East, is home to an incredible landscape of volcanoes and volcanic activity. One of the standout volcanoes of the region is the Mutnovsky Volcano, a combination of many merged craters that spew forth great jets of superheated water and plumes of sulphurous smoke.
_3____
It is a group of islands said to have been ‘created by fire’ – formed after massive undersea volcanic activity in the Pacific. Quite apart from its reputation as a paradise island, which makes it a popular destination for many, it is undoubtedly a Mecca for volcano lovers. The Kilauea volcano on the Big Island is the most active volcano on the planet and – conditions permitting – you will be able to visit one of Kilauea’s active lava streams as it pours dramatically into the sea.
_4___
Sitting on the border of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, the Central American country is another beautiful place that has many areas of volcanic interest for you to discover. Hikes to see the volcanoes here will take you from jungle to peak, through some of the country’s magnificent national parks. There, you can visit landmarks such as the Irazu Volcano and its stunning green lake.

Nowadays more and more foreign enterprises and companies are no longer relying on interviews for recruitment(招募). Years of studying interviewing has made it clear that it is not a very objective process. Personnel officers often hire the person they like best or even the one they think most physically attractive. Looking good is no guarantee of doing the job well.
To get a more objective view, many companies are also using psychological tests,to hire both for relatively routine job and for positions at senior levels of management. It is impossible to say how many employers use tests, but estimates of test sales in the U.K.for 2001 were over one million.
Recruitment can involve steps in two ways. Step 1 is always the same:job application. The company decides whether you might be suitable based on your qualifications and your previous job experience. Step 2 can be screening. A specific test is given at this stage to rule out those who might not be worth interviewing. Some large employers use tests—especially IQ based tests precisely to eliminate the unsuitable. Only those who pass Step 2 go to the interview. Step 2 can also be testing and interview combined. If the company thinks you might be suitable after looking at your application, they ask you to come to be tested and to be interviewed. It is seen very much as part of the same step.
Tests claim to be scientific and objective. A large body of research has shown that interviews by themselves are not very reliable as a method of selection. People's judgments are often very subjective:whether they like the look of someone counts for more than almost anything else. But reliable and valid tests can offer rapid and more objective information about wouldbe employees. If a candidate talks well in an interview but his test results suggest that he is a careless person who cannot concentrate, and employer is likely to think twice about hiring him.
Taking a serious test for a job is rather different from taking a gamelike test. You can spend just a little time answering questions of that kind of test, and you can deny the answers and say they are not accurate. But you can not go to a serious test without enough preparation since you can not afford to be denied and eliminated again and again. What can you do to do justice to yourself in tests? Here are three tips:Understand,Analyze,Practice.

The Importance of Positive Attitude
A positive attitude is very important as it will make our life easier.       . There will be times when we will face problems and obstacles. The most challenging part is not when our life goes smoothly but how we react when we experience problems and difficulties.
Those who have a positive attitude will treat any problem as a challenge. Instead of being discouraged, they will treat each failure as a lesson.       . As for those who do not have the positive attitude, they will see problems and difficulties in a different way.
The situation can be the same for both the Guy A and Guy B.        . Every one of us has the same amount of time. Since having a negative attitude will eat up our time, why don’t we just make good use of the same amount of time to have a positive attitude? Life itself is already hard. It will be much better if we have a positive attitude which will make our life happier and easier.
. People will generally prefer to stay with people who have positive attitudes as being happy is very infectious (富有感染力的) . Everyone will be affected by the energy of positive attitudes and they too will have a positive attitude.
If you learn to see the bright side of life when you’re surrounded by difficulties, you’ll be building your positive attitude fast.     .

What is a big dream?   Or, is a big dream something that provides only entertainment? Children dream big dreams, but there are three barriers to realizing dreams. They often kill them before they ever have a chance to grow.
The Self
Immediately following the birth of a big dream, a negative self-talk takes over and gives all the reasons why it cannot happen. This inside voice is the ego (自我). It’s there for protecting and should be listened to.     Most people are influenced by the inside voice. That’s why only a handful of people make their dream come true.

Family and friends are a lot like the ego. They want to protect those they love, so they will often list all the reasons why the big dreams won’t come true. Sometimes, family and friends destroy dreams of those they love most, out of their own fear of being left behind.
The World
If one gets past the first two barriers, one has to face the world.     In the past, big dreamers were locked up and sometimes even killed when they were shown to the world. Fortunately, in most of the world today, big dreamers just get laughed at.
The way to realize a big dream is with confidence and action. When children have confidence and then take action, they will be ready to accept any failure. The truth is that every great dreamer whose dreams have never seen the light of success knows failure well.

A.Family and Friends.
B.How big Dreams Die.
C.Does a big dream show one’s future?
D.They simply fail until they succeed.

E. it is the last and the most terrible barrier.

Make sure the respondent has enough information
Remember your survey’s purpose
Keep your questions simple
Include only one topic per question
If in doubt, throw it out
Avoid leading questions
Write more effective survey questions
Naturally, no question is “good” in all situations, but there are some general rules to follow. Using these rules and examples will help you write useful questions.
_______________
All other rules and guidelines are based on this one. There was a reason you decided to spend your time and money to do your survey, and you should ensure that every question you ask supports that reason. If you start to get lost while writing your questions, refer back to this rule.
_______________
This is another way of stating the first rule, but it is important enough to repeat. A question should never be included in a survey because you can’t think of a good reason to discard it. If you cannot come up with a concrete benefit that will result from the question, don’t use it.
________________
Compound sentences force respondents to keep a lot of information in their heads, and are likely to produce unpredictable results. Example: “Imagine a situation where the production supervisor is away from the line, a series of defective parts is being manufactured, and you just heard that a new client requires ten thousand of these parts in order to make their production schedule. How empowered do you feel by your organization to stop the line and make the repairs to the manufacturing equipment?” This question is too complex for a clear, usable answer. Try breaking it down into components parts.
_______________
How would you interpret the responses to “Please rate your satisfaction with the amount and kind of care you received while in the hospital.” or, a question asking about speed and accuracy? If you want to be able to come up with specific recommended actions, you need specific questions.
________________
Asking respondents “How effective has this company’s new distribution program been?” may not be as effective as “Recently, we used a new distribution system. Did you know this?” Followed by “Have you seen any positive benefits resulting from this change?” It can be beneficial to break down questions that require background information into two parts: a screening item describing the situation which asks if the respondent knows about it, and a follow-up question addressing attitudes the respondent has about the topic.

Tips of losing weight:  Weight loss is a hard topic. Lots of people aren’t satisfied with their present weight, but most people aren’t sure how to change it. You may want to look like the models or actors in magazines or on TV, but those goals might not be healthy or realistic for you.
So what should you do about your weight control?
The best way to find out if you are at a healthy weight or if you need to lose or gain weight is to talk to a doctor or dietitian (营养师).         If it turns out that you can benefit from weight loss then you can follow a few of the simple suggestions listed below to get started.
People who lose weight quickly by crash dieting or other extreme measure usually gain back all of the pounds they lost, because they haven’t permanently (永久的) changed their habits. Therefore, the best weight management ways are those that you can maintain for a lifetime.
Small changes are a lot easier to stick with than large ones. Try reducing the size of what you eat.         Once you have that done, start gradually introducing healthier foods and exercise into your life.

A.Try giving up regular soda for a week.

Empathy
Last year, researchers from the University of Michigan reported that empathy, the ability to understand other people, among college students had dropped sharply over the past 10 years. __71__ Today, people spend more time alone and are less likely to join groups and clubs.
Jennifer Freed, a co-director of a teen program, has another explanation. Turn on the TV, and you’re showered with news and reality shows full of people fighting, competing, and generally treating one another with no respect. __72__
There are good reasons not to follow those bad examples. Humans are socially related by nature. __73__ Researchers have also found that empathetic teenagers are more likely to have high self-respect. Besides, empathy can be a cure for loneliness, sadness, anxiety, and fear.
Empathy is also an indication of a good leader. In fact, Freed says, many top companies report that empathy is one of the most important things they look for in new managers. __74__ “Academics are important. But if you don’t have emotional intelligence, you won’t be as successful in work or in your love life,” she says.
What’s the best way to up your EQ (情商)? For starters, let down your guard and really listen to others. __75__
To really develop empathy, you’d better volunteer at a nursing home or a hospital, join a club or a team that has a diverse membership, have a “sharing circle” with your family, or spend time caring for pets at an animal shelter.

A.Everyone is different, and levels of empathy differ from person to person.
B.Having relationships with other people is an important part of being human—and having empathy is decisive to those relationships.
C.Humans learn by example—and most of the examples on it are anything but empathetic.
D.“One doesn’t develop empathy by having a lot of opinions and doing a lot of talking,” Freed says.

E. Empathy is a matter of learning how to understand someone else—both what they think and how they feel.
F. Good social skills—including empathy—are a kind of “emotional intelligence” that will help you succeed in many areas of life.
G. That could be because so many people have replaced face time with screen time, the researchers said.

Several Ways to Respectfully Disagree
It’s easier to agree than disagree. But we can learn a lot from conversations where we don’t see eye to eye—if we can listen and talk rationally(理性地), that is. _1  These tips can help keep disagreements constructive.
Don’t make it personal. If you get upset, it can help to remember you’re mad at the idea or concept your parent (or friend, coach, coworker, etc.) is raising, not the person.
Use “I” statements to communicate how you feel, what you think, and what you want or need. 2  For example, telling your mom or dad, “You always remind me about my chores on Wednesdays when you know I have a lot of homework” has a very different tone from “I’m feeling pressured because I have a lot of homework tonight. Can I do those chores tomorrow?”
3  Being a good listener is a way of showing that you respect and understand the other person’s idea. That makes it more likely he or she will do the same for you. When the other person is talking, try to stop yourself from thinking about why you disagree or what you’ll say next. Instead, focus on what’s being said. When it’s your turn to talk, repeat back any key point the other person made to show you listened and heard what was said.  4
Stay calm. This is the most important thing you can do to keep a conversation on track. Of course, it’s a huge challenge to stay calm and rational when you feel angry about something. You may need to be the mature one who manages the conversation.
5  Being helpful and considerate toward family members, teachers, or coaches in our everyday actions helps all of us establish a foundation for those times when we might disagree.

A.Listen to the other point of view.
B.Using “you” statements can sound argumentative.
C.Then calmly present your case and why you disagree.
D.Respect goes beyond difficult conversations, of course.

E. Avoid putting down the other person’s ideas and beliefs.
F. You want to find your own path and make your own choices.
G. Unfortunately, lots of us either shy away completely from disagreements or lose it when things don’t go our way.

1. Kitty: Dad encouraged me to show great determination to do anything.
2. Kelly: Dad gave me a new life which is full of love and happiness.
3. Aidan: Dad is the person who introduced me to my sports career.
4. Bruce: Dad taught me to share housework and take family responsibility.
5. Pamela: Dad shows me that the most important in life is our family.

A
B
Dear Daddy, you stepped into my life years ago, and became my dad, a man who raised three fatherless kids and adopted(领养) another. It didn’t matter to you or us whether we were your biological kids or not—you are our dad! You did everything humanly possible for us, and you managed to have taken care of Mom, who has been sick, and the grandkids as well. Lessons we learned are love and compassion and kindness…We love you dearly.
My dad taught me how to play basketball. He taught me how to pivot, throw three pointers, and do lay-ups and dunks. Now I am a pro (职业球员) at basketball. When I played basketball in December, I was a good guard. Although I sometimes didn’t play very well and my team lost the game, my dad always encouraged me never to lose heart. Now I have a dream that when I grow up I can play basketball on the Celtics. I love my dad!
C
D
The most important thing that my dad ever taught me was “Stick to it. Never do anything halfway”. He always told me that by doing your very best, you prove your ability, commitment and character. This advice was what I always kept in mind, whether I was removing the snow from the driveway, helping do the volunteer work in the nursing house or completing my last course in graduate school.
“It shows what kind of person you are,” my dad would say. “People will remember and respect you for that.” I do remember and respect my dad’s advice, which will guide me to do anything.
My dad has taught me many things. He has taught me love, hope, respect, discipline and the value of hard work. He has taught me never to be afraid, but when I am, his arms are always open for me to run into. He has taught me the value of a job well done. He has taught me how to ride a bike, then to drive a car. He always tells me that he believes in me and that I can manage to deal with the things around me. He is teaching me how to grow up but not grow apart. My dad is always there for me, and he has told me that he always will be.
E
F
My dad teaches me throughout my lifetime to present day that family is first. He says, “As the father, you should put your own wants and needs aside to make sure that your wife and children have the best that life has to offer.” He did this without failing every day of our lives, without words or empty promises; instead, through sleepless nights and tireless actions always with a smile. His words always remind me what I should do for the family. I am proud to be his son. I love you, Dad.
My dad and I have a funny company we call “Priority”. It changes depending on the household chores we’re doing. He has taught me how to take care of the pool (Priority Pools), how to program garage doors (Priority Garages), how to plan family birthday parties (Priority Parties), how to install dishwashers (Priority Dishwashers) and how to clean the computer (Priority Computers). The list goes on. I’m proud of my dad, and grateful for my time with him. We have so much fun doing projects together.
